Tuning  Something new I’ve noticed since getting a digital gauge.

My FX Maverick has an orca digital gauge on it. I’ve noticed an interesting trend now that I can see the pressure down to the exact bar. When going out into the colder weather this time of year the pressure actually creeps up by 4-5 bar. This is opposite of what I thought would happen but I’m thinking that maybe the reg interacting with the cooler less dense air?? For example, my 2nd reg runs 105 bar approx in the warm house. If I take it outside it will end up at 108-109. It will stay there inside the house even when warmed up. However, if I fire three or for dry fires after warm the reg settles right back to 105 and stays there . Anyone else notice this or can explain it?

  • Question
R9 cocking shoe galling

Hey guys hope alls well. My R9 has started galling on the inside of the compression tube where the shoe is making contact. The gun is early 2000s and has a macarri spring, spring guide and tophat. I’ve had the gun apart multiple times and have never had an issue. I’ve sanded to 600 grit on the cocking shoe, and on the tube where the shoe makes contact hoping it had developed a burr.
I feel like I’m not going about it right. I haven’t made the problem worse, but my efforts haven’t helped in the slightest. Sorry for the photo quality. Any help is much appreciated.

New to PCP

Just joined this forum and have a question or two. I've ordered a GAMO Arrow in .22cal and am wondering if I can adjust the velocity downward by not filling the rifle to maximum pressure. Would this increase accuracy at the expense of shot count? I bought this rifle because it's supposed to be very quiet and has a relatively low velocity for a PCP rifle. I'm limited to 25 yard shooting by the size of my backyard and I don't want to annoy my neighbors.

Thanks,
Kim

Steaming Dents out of a Weihrauch (or any brand) stock

Hi all. Welp, I made an idiot mark on the stock of a recently acquired Beeman HW97K. I accidently rubbed the butt end against a zipper on my jacket which somehow managed to leave a light dent trail on the side of the comb. Quite frankly I'm amazed that this casual act managed to cause such a pressure mark, but here we are.

Yv5s2m4l.jpg

POfkhAll.jpg

Its light enough that taking a clear photo was challenging, but it sticks out like a sore thumb to me everything I look the rifle over. I'd like to steam it out without having to refinish the entire stock. My fear though is that applying a wet cloth and hot iron will destroy the finish in and around where dent is. Has anyone tried this? And if so, what was your experience and the results?

Team of 12

Being as Field Target is soooo much fun, and being that the nearest field target club is over one hour away in Pensacola, FL. and being that my nearest "legal" practice range is 45 minutes out, I'm trying to create a "LOCAL" community of airheads that I can introduce to field target. To do This I have to find and or acquire land with sufficient space and permissible zoning that will allow me to create A PLACE. The close in powder burner gun ranges, to date, have expressed little interest in Field Target disciplines that involve air rifles. This is further complicated by a simple fact that finding fellow airgunners in Mobile, Al. is harder than finding a Unicorn, Sasquatch and the Lochness monster having a get together.
I'm slowly but surely talking my way through the community and via Facebook, i even found a former gent that represented England in FT over 23 years ago before he moved to the states; We've gotten together for a shoot or two and he's even had his sister ship his "gun" to him... see pic below. a very cool piece with custom stock and the action moved so far back it feels like a feather to hold at point. Fast forward... I need ideas to help me get more people on board. Archery clubs? Boy scouts? ROTC? Paintball enthusiasts? And i need to do presentations to the City Counsel etc.... hoping to get acquisition and even financial support close in so we don't have to drive over an hour just to shoot an hour or three hours and drive an hour home... that's 5 hours!
Does anybody know of some great presentation videos or power point presentations or literature to help me along?

Glass Nirvana ?

Buying various FT airgun platforms, is very easy... I'm up to 12. Currently they are all <20 FPE:
FX Dreamline custom FT rigs, FX GRS Crown custom FT rig, BSA Goldstar SE, Custom Marauder, Daystate Hunstman classic, Daystate Revere, Daystate Redwolf, Daystate Tsar, Steyr Hunting Challenge FT, RAW TM1000... The rifles share (all of them) a much better degree of accuracy than (me the shooter). Moving on -

BUT

What is most challenging (besides doing standers or kneelers) is finding the "RIGHT SCOPE" the ONE scope, that provides the right amount of easily understandable information that logically transfers that info onto my dope chart then into my head, then most important of all, accurate visual translation when I'm doing my holdovers...

What the heck?

My current inventory of optics includes: US Optics, Element Nexus, SWFA, Hawke, Athalon, Arken, Sightron, and even a couple of March scopes and quite frankly, all of them have their strong points
some are SFP, second focal plane
some are FFP, first focal plane
The reticle choices... my oh my...!
Where is the one scope with the right reticle to provide the best information that translates "super simple and visually" into my holdovers?
Where is the one scope that will rule them all?

What is the Ideal Twist Rate of Slugs up to .25 Caliber?

Guys,
Have gone to the Barrel Outlet's (GS) twist calculator which suggests .177, .20 , .22 and .25 cal. slugs traveling at 950 fps have a twist rate of NO LESS 1 every 11". This seems a very fast twist rate ... much faster than the OEM RAW HM1000x, which I believe is 1 every 17.7".

Enjoying my new 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 yard setup

I'm so stoked to have a range with a variety of distances to switch between as I shoot. I went out this afternoon and set up a handful of aspirin at 20 and a few targets throughout the range - was a very enjoyable 30 minutes of shooting, and I'm feeling more confident than ever in my short-range holds.
PXL_20230326_223837054.jpg

5 yard / 10 yard / 15 yard / 20 yard targets give me plenty of options!

PXL_20230326_224639718.jpg
What fun!

BTW, used kart (or Onewheel) tires full of sand are just fantastic lead catchers. VERY quiet and will stop just about anything.

What a great day of shooting in some very hectic winds.

Had a great day shooting with my buddy Matt, I baseline tuned my huben .25 I am using for the bench rest at NAC out my apartment door last night and finalized it today with some shooting and practice. I recently got Matt into PCP airgunning , hes got an Airacuda Max .22 and loves it.

We shot the airacudas at 52 yards and then took my huben to 100 to practice for the bench rest competition.

Here is Matts tune with his Airacuda .22 and a group to coincide, the wind was wreaking havoc on the 15.89 hades , just wasn't the day for that hole in hole grouping.

Now out to 100 we go which I was dreading as this lane is particularly windy, like a wind tunnel almost every time we do have winds.

I was zeroing, testing, and tuning today, finally dialed in a tune that I think I am going to leave and here it is, also the grouping is a full mag, 19 shots, 100 yards, with wind. IMO AWESOME!! so happy with that group for my first day out with this rifle setup. With a non wobbly table, no wind, I do not doubt that it could have shot all 19 in that hole. I know I have some fine tuning to do and practice but I am very thrilled. I am also breaking in a brand new regulator this is my five year old huben and I ended up with some reg creep issues which are now resolved.

Not a Truthful Salesman to be Found

Well friends, yesterday I walked into a well-known airgun store with nothing particular on my mind. I was just moseying along when the store's salesman asked if I needed help. Well, I told him that I was just looking for the moment, but that I favored springers. As I was looking some over, he said that he had a special deal on a "good as new" Weihrauch 35E, still in the box. He spun me the story of how his technician put this tiny little scratch on the rifle while installing the customer requested Vortek SHO PG4 tune. He brought it out and had me shoot it a couple of times and saw that I was interested. He tole me that is was in a very unusual walnut stock, as most HW rifles are burch. It shot awfully smooth and the scratch was almost unseen. He told me that he could "give" it to me for a mere $629.00. Now my old, somewhat feeble old mind started sending out alarm signals. Hummm . . . that doesn't seem like such a deal to me. That stock certainly looked liked walnut stained burch to me. He then told me that Vortek had recently raised their prices to well over a hundred dollars. Now I had him, I know that Tom is still selling his kits for $89 - $99. That salesman, at a well-known airgun store, thought me a rube. I may be old, certainly not as quick as I once was, but I still shoot straight when talking to fellow airgunners. I'da made a mighty poor salesman, but I sleep pretty well for an old fart. I could hope that this salesman reads this and regrets trying to mislead me. He may sleep better. Yep, that's the truth. Orv.

FX Impact Javelin Slugs and a Turkey for dinner on the second day of the season

So I got me a turkey. Actually, this is my first turkey hunt ever and it is only my second time. This time I went by myself, and man what a difference. A lot easier. 35 yard headshot. Using 23 grain Javelin slugs.

XFT at PRGC on 03/25/2023 Match Report

Sounds like the shooters had a great time yesterday. 16 came out, 5 slug and 11 pellet. No rimfire guys this month. Which makes it a good time to mention that XFT @ PRGC is the only place in the country where pellet, slug, and rimfire guys are all shooting field target. This month we had a couple shooters from California, two from Oklahoma, and at least one from Texas. All in all, a good showing of pretty talented competitors.

A small history lesson here at the beginning of the match report. (And this can all be corroborated with a thorough search here on AGN, as it was discussed at length in various posts)....
Prior to Ben Spencer, the only high power/long range field target option was the once a year American Field Target division at Extreme Benchrest. Ben thought there was much greater interest than was being served by those once-a-year matches and begged AOA to borrow their American Field Targets for a couple years before they finally acquiesced. Ben procured a location at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club and single-handedly built a course. The first event at PRGC was called "The American Field Target Southwest Challenge" holding true to the name used during EBR for the prior 5+ years. AOA sponsored that first event at PRGC and even produced a video:
After that, Ben continued to put on monthly matches and growth exploded from there. He and Mike S saw where many improvements could be made and designed a new large/heavy duty field target. They initially produced enough for us to have matches and so that AOA's targets could be returned to their owner. Now Ben and Mike sell their heavy duty targets under the S&S Targets name. As I wrote those first couple match reports we tried out a few different names, eventually settling on a the new name of Extreme Field Target, which I often type as Xtreme Field Target, and even XFT for short. It's pretty cool to see how one man's simple vision (in this case creating and hosting frequently occurring high power/long range field target matches) can have such a profound effect.

Now, that we set the record straight, back to this month's report.....
Here are top three slug shooters. (left to right: Mike B, Peykan B and Derrick W) and yes, they're all Team Centercut

The course was entirely new this month, all different distances and target placement than we're used to. Which is pretty dang cool! I love variety at a field target match, greatly enjoying a new course that I have never shot.

Wayne M. supplied the following data regarding the course...
targets and troyer calc.jpg

You'll notice my chicken scratch down the right side, that's Troyer calculations. Overall T for the match this month was a 36.26, and then went up slightly if I threw out the offhand shots. I circled the 3 targets with the highest T values and will give specific hit ratios for those in the scorecard later on in this report.

Here are a select few of the targets....

And they dealt with some wind....

The equipment list and results....
scorecard.jpg

There's always some cool stories behind the data here. Here are a few of them.
  • We had a couple more slug shooters this month. I was supposed to be one of them but had schedule conflicts. As for the slugs, the Panthera's showed up! Peykan told me he got his Panthera just this week. He shot the Gen 1 34gr Patriot slugs from the .22 version, with 700mm liner, at 1000fps.
  • Derrick and I discussed the slug guns we were prepping with back and forth for a few weeks prior to this match. The rig he used shows serious promise, holding MOA quite often. He told me the wind got him on a few yesterday though and he suspects that he had some flyers also bring his score down.
  • Scott H went 23 shots without a miss! Tony only had 5, so of course the tie for high score went to Scott. Scott's been creeping up the scoreboard for a while now, and made it to the top this month. I've been squadded with Scott for 2 of the last 3 matches I've attended and he's a fun guy to shoot with. He's just a calm, laidback guy and shooting with him always feels more like hanging out with a good friend than being in a competition. He's got a grandson that has been coming to the low power field target matches across town and it's always good to see some young folks enjoying field target.
  • Barb is normally higher up the scoreboard but she shot a different gun than she normally does.
  • Van is also typically at the other end of the scoreboard but seems to have had some equipment malfunctions.
  • Martin M was THE ONLY shooter to go 4/4 on the offhand land.
  • Offhand shots: Despite winning, the high pellet and the high slug shooters had bad days on the offhand lane. 3 of Peykan's 5 misses came from that darned offhand lane. Long-standing tradition in field target for forced position shots to be make-or-break, and Ben is keeping that alive in XFT.
Too many people to thank. Sounds like Ben had lots of help getting targets painted and the course being set up and torn down, etc. If you had a hand in that, THANK YOU! For no only your efforts this month, but for your efforts any time you pitch in and help. The matches couldn't happen without that behind-the-scenes work. You are appreciated, even if we don't tell you that often or enough.

FX  Impact Nirvana...

Picked this up recently and couldnt be happier with it and had to share. There is a story behind this gun that I wont bore folks with, but suffice to say that at this point, I'd have to be awful hungry before letting this one go.

Silver Impact .22 with various upgrades on it. Dialed it in today with NSA 23gr slugs at 920fps. Reg at 119bar. Laser accurate with them. Was very surprised, actually.

I know there are a ton of Impact threads out there and I'm not showing anything new or exciting, but I'm pretty stoked with this thing.

Edited to update picture...

Tuning the FX Wildcat BT Compact 30 cal

I just picked up this gun brand new! Out of the box at shooting 560 ft per second in 30 caliber. There are no instructions in the you will on how to tune it the picture of the regulator in the booklet doesn't look anything or isn't in the same place as the regulator on my gun anything I can find on the internet is just saying how great the gun is, there's nothing to show you how to get it to shoot to that greatness!
Does anybody know where I can find a video on tuning this thing? The best I've got it up to is 670 ft per second and it fluctuates.

Bear

A guy wants to get a bear, so he takes his PCP 72 Cal. deep in the woods. He sees a big bear, holds up his gun, aims, boom. He looks after the smoke, nothing. Behind him he feels a big paw on his shoulder and in a big burly voice he hears, drop your drawers and bend over. The bear gives him the big Kahuna and disappears. The Hunter pissed and bleeding goes home.
He’es back next day with a 30;06. See’s the bear and unloads a full clip. Puts his gun down to look. No bear. Burly, Paw shoulder bend over again the bear gives it to the Hunter and disappears, Hunters pissed, and blood loss.
Next day he has that gattling gun Arnold used in Predator. He see’s the bear holds the gun and lets it go, vegetation pulverized trees down, an absolute waste land. After the smoke has a look. Nothing.
Big Bear paw on the shoulder, and the bear says. “You didn’t come out here to hunt, did you“.
‘Couldn’t resist a hunting joke. Sorry to get off side. Crow

Finally! Some nice FT practice weather!

I got to setup my X50 for the upcoming season finally. Mid 50s, light breeze, and not a cloud to be scene. I modified/stole an idea from @oaks1450 for my target/ranging practice this year. I took these supplies:

20230325_161907.jpg

....and made ranging and target carts out of them like this:

20230326_105225.jpg
20230326_125736.jpg

and then jammed them into the ground every yard from 10-20yds and then every 5yds out to 55. It worked great for getting my wheel setup and figuring out approximate DOPE at given ranges. This time around I did mark the cards for whatever range they were placed at but in the future they'll be completely random. Only a couple more weeks until the first match here!

local gun show find

BSA 36x44 new in box almost . A guy bought it for hunting , tried it out in the field and could not find or hold on target " POS" ! i gave him $20 for it . Looked it up and Midway has for $139.00 so not expecting a lot but should be ok from a bench , and to see if i want to spend $$$ on a top line 35 or 45 power scope .
