FX Impact M3 Second reg hiss

Hi all, new to this new to this air gun thing but have a blast, just installed a slug kit in an FX impact, M3, all went well or so I thought but when I screwed the bottle back on the second reg was hissing out air, screwing the centre one back in stops the leak but as soon as you back it out it hisses again. As I didn’t go near it have I done something else wrong? Or blown an O ring or something?

Son-in-law buys his first FX

I come home from work yesterday to a very excited young man (who's very new to air rifles) holding his new to him (bought it used) FX wildcat mk3 vp in 25. I look it over and see the previous owner took good care of it.. no marks/scratches.. looks as if the previous owner never shot it.. this is his 2nd PCP...his first one is a kral emperor xs 22 cal..this first FX which he's been talking about wanting one for a good bit.. I asked what he thought... He says it shoots great without the moderator which it came with a Donny sumo 22/25.... He said it was clipping and didn't shot good with it on. (remember he's very new to this hobby).. I personally have never had a problem with a Donny clipping and found it hard to believe. I look the sumo over and see no signs of clipping.. picked up the wildcat and was looking it over and noticed the shroud was loose... By a good bit... Once it was tightened up snug and the sumo put back on.. it shot.. but not all that impressive.. I'm talking nickel to quarter size groups at 30 yards.. (I wonder if this isn't the reason the first owner sold it) ok let's clean the barrel and break out the chrony... Those groups are unacceptable! Cleaning done, few rounds down the pipe and no improvement.. chrony time. After about five shots tuning began. The numbers were all over the place. After setting the regulators (thanks guys for posting YT videos on tuning the duel regs as I'm unfamiliar with setting duel regs... sorry FX guys I'm a RTI guy 😊) some hammer spring adjustment and we had a very nice shot string. Now it prints groups that can easily be covered by a dime at 50 yards.. now I have a very excited son-n-law who loves his very first FX... After it was set up He must have set outside in the cold over 2 hours just shooting... when he came inside he was wound for sound...his excitement was off the charts! It was great...!!

Weihrauch - yesterday’s prices

I’ve been noticing some hefty price increases from Weihrauch. Been watching Krale as they get restocked. Everything coming back in has substantial price increases. Take for example the HW85. Weihrauch doesn’t list the traditional stock version of this anymore, just the Luxus model. Don’t know why they stock this longer barrel version of the HW95 with a stock better suited for a scope. Krale has the older traditional and the Luxus model. The older stock traditional model is $400. the Luxus $520. They have the HW98 in 22 caliber (old stock) at $575 and the 177 (newly back in) $625. Most have already gone up but there are still some at yesterday’s prices. Maybe some other retailers have some “bargains“ out there also. Good time to buy if you find a deal.

Just received an Altaros booster

Other HPA sources I've used were a Shoebox F10 (x4 or 5 years) and a Yong Heng (x7 months). Sold the F10 as a parts donor when I got frustrated trying to source replacement parts and the Yong Heng is still ticking just fine, with the caveat that the oil gets REALLY dark REALLY quick (impending doom?). So coming from that background......

I've been debating the acquisition of a bit more reliable compressor for a couple months. Slowly narrowed down the potentials until I arrived at the Altaros booster pump. And was only pushed that direction because a really good deal on a 20gallon California Air Tools (CAT) compressor popped up on local classifieds. The lady had bought it new and used it for one job, to run a paint sprayer to redo her kitchen cabinets. So, it appears to be very lightly used.

I ordered the Altaros last Monday night and it was delivered this Tuesday, so 8 days total, I ordered the non hybrid, non bottle-to-bottle version. Sheet metal box, it doesn't look like they offer the option of the plastic toolbox like they did in the past. It arrived very well packaged, having some memory foam inside the ends of the packaging. I was previously unaware but they supplied at least a partial rebuild kit with just the purchase of the compressor. I also ordered two complete reseal kits and they were present as well. A nice little bound manual was also included.

The only assembly required was to thread the male fitting for the air supply into the side of the box.

Since I wanted the booster to have a permanent home I needed to rearrange my gun room a bit. That entailed extending a shelf and moving my bottles. I like the idea of having the bottles higher than the booster but the logistics of putting heavy bottles up a wall haven't yet been addressed, so bottle are on the ground for now. I drilled a hole through the shelf right under the bleed valve to make life a bit easier. (the shelf was made from wood I scavenged during the house remodel, just wanted to point out that I'm not responsible for the atrocious stain job)
PXL_20230406_132757941.jpg

The low pressure side of my set up has 3 bleed valves: bottom of the first stage compressor, output of the first stage compressor, and the one that came with the Altaros, right where the shop air enters the booster. 25 feet of low pressure line that goes up and around other junk in the gun room, basically from one corner to the other of the room. Altaros is about 5 feet off the ground, compressor is at ground level. On the first run last night (83 minutes) I got moisture from all three bleed valves, in descending qtys (largest amount came out from the blow out at the bottom of the first stage compressor tank). The first inch or so of the silica beads within the booster changed color slightly (orange = no moisture and dark green equals saturated, per manual). No moisture was found in the fittings on the high pressure side after all was said and done. Per NWS, the relative humidity during the fill averaged 40%, but that is of course outside. The booster lives inside a well-insulated room within my garage, so likely much lower humidity.

PXL_20230406_132715597.jpg

In that 83minutes, my big 60min Drager tank went from 3900-4500psi. That works out to an increase of about 72psi/10 minutes. For reference, the F10 would increase the pressure in this same tank by 100psi every 10minutes and the Yong Heng does the same 3900-4500 run in about 15 minutes (400psi/10minutes). So, Altaros is slowest of the three options I've used.

For about the first half of that 83 minutes I was playing with the CAT's regulator pressure and the Altaros flow adjustment to arrive at the desired run/rest ratio. It started out with a 2 min run time and a 4 minute rest (40/80). Bumped the CAT's output pressure from 90psi to 110 at that point and then fiddled with the flow restrictor to eventually get 4 min run, 4 minute rest for a very conservative 50/50. It appeared to fill faster after adjustment and I think I'll have something like 80-90psi/ten minutes now that I'm at the 50/50 run/rest times. Altaros recommends 60/40 but even at 50/50 I felt like the heads on the compressor were getting a bit warm. I'll take longer fill times if it increases the longevity of the CAT. I think 90-100psi/10 minutes would be pretty feasible if I was to push the first stage to 60/40 or even 70/30, which CAT lists as the duty cycle for this specific compressor.

I babysat the system the whole time last night, but now that I've got things set up I would feel comfortable not being right there with it. I loved that about the F10 and feel it is one of the biggest pros for the booster concept. Turn it on and go about my life, no need to hang out with eye protection and ear muffs, hoping you get out of the experience unmaimed (yes, that's how I feel about the Yong Heng). The Yonger hasn't given me any reason to fear it, but that 15minutes of fill time with the Yonger is high stress; loud, obnoxious, trying to contain it (mine's a migrater), monitoring temps (water and head temp on digital read out) requiring bleeds every couple minutes and constant monitoring to prevent overfills.

As for the first stage compressor....the F10 was happy with a 6gallon 2.6cfm @90psi pancake compressor, resting 6-8 minutes for every 2 or 3 minutes that it ran. BUT I wouldn't dare try that small of a compressor with the Altaros. This 20 gallon CAT is rated for 5.3cfm @ 90psi and I don't think I'd recommend going with anything less. Just like many before me have said, the bigger the shop compressor the better, when it comes to the Altaros.

I took a page out of @Roachcreek s book and directed a box fan at the CAT's heads because I wasn't comfortable with their heat. I don't think I'll be tethering 3 CATs though.

The only change I'm considering making is to add another container of dessicant on the low pressure side, right before it enters the booster.

Why I choose the Sidewinder over the Daystate Delta, the M3 and the Vulcan 3 for my last purchase.

1.- More power or less power just making turns clockwise or counterclockwise, that easy. None of the other alternatives offer that.

2.- Same accuracy or even more than all of them, both, close or far away.

3.- No possibility of electronics failure as in the Delta.

4.- No need of professional tunning on micro and macro as needed in the M3.

5.- More power than the one obtainable on the Vulcan 3 with shorter total length and less weight.

6.- No need of special but pad, nor a raiser on the scope rail, nor to buy an extra rail under the bottle as in the Delta and the M3.

7.- No need to buy a bigger bottle as in the case of the Delta Wolf.

8.- If wanted to change the caliber (22 -25, not 30), just to unscrew actual barrel and screw the new one and taking out the actual magazine and insert the new caliber one, without removing additional pieces, nor hammer, nor any kind of pin, as M3 and Delta need.

9.- No batteries that could need replacement.

10.- No software that could need update.

11.- No side level smooth nor stiff, automatic mechanism.

12.- No plastic magazine that can be broken or that can malfunction, as could happen with the M3.

13.- Certainty of accuracy with both pellets and slugs without the need of buying another barrel or additional pieces.

Well, those were the analized points to drove to go for another Sidewinder instead of for a Delta Wolf, a M3 or a Vulcan 3 700, all in .25 Cal.

Good bye for those three rifles that always had as a "very nice to eventually buy".

Webley Tomahawk Venom .177 Chequered by Jan Kraner

We are blessed to get to appreciate these guns for a time. I feel we have some responsibility to share them with each other. This is a .177 Webley Tomahawk, from the Venom factory and subsequently chequered tastefully by Jan Kraner.
The best part about this gun is the story about how I came to get it and the friendship built along the way! That may be another day...

Vector Veyron...Problems

I read a bunch of reviews online about these scopes and thought I'd give one a try, a Veyron 3-12X44. Everything said about the glass proved to be absolutely true. this one is amazingly clear and bright. I mean, it's on a par with some of the best scopes I've had, and I've spent a ton on scopes. I was really impressed. The reticle is thin, but I love that. Build quality is very good, with all controls moving just perfect, not too tight and not too light. The clicks are a bit on the mushy side, but no worse than scopes costing three times the price of admission. Parallax was spot on too. The only thing I can think of to complain about is the fov is noticeably smaller than scopes you might be used to, but hey, It's a compact scope and that's part of the nature of the beast.
Then I mounted it on my HW100 .177, which is your usual Weirauch tack driver. First groups, not too bad, but I felt something was wrong. Made up a tall target for tracking testing, which is simply a crosshair drawn on cardboard, with the cross at the bottom. You shoot at the cross, and move up the vertical line to check tracking and mil spacing. The first group was around an inch, not good for this gun. Moving up 5 mils, and the first shot was at 4 mils, then the next hit 4.5 mils, then 5 mils. Back down a couple mils, and again, the shots were strung out, til it got to the proper mark, back up to 5 mils, same thing, back to zero, and again stringing to the crosshair. I shot some subsequent groups and they were in the 1" to 1-1/2" range all at 33 yards, which is soooo much worse than this rifle is capable of. Those last 4 or 5 groups were with no changes turret changes at all. The scope just couldn't hold zero.
At this point, I mounted a SWFA SS 10X and repeated the exact same tall target test with it. Groups were all less than 1/2", most were 1/4" or just a tad larger, and I admit I was hurrying once I was convinced things were good. Moving up and down the vertical line works perfectly with each full mil movement hitting right on. So that proves it's the scope, and nothing else. I even remounted the Vector and made sure I hadn't had a loose mount or anything, and if anything, groups were worse.
So, no love here for Veyron scopes today. I dunno if I'll get another or just return it and move on. It's such a shame, because they seem to have nailed everything else, but honestly if any scope is not mechanically sound, then it's useless.
Anyone else had trouble with Veyron scopes?

Need some advice in regard to parting with my essentially NIB Benjamin Marauder

I've got a Benjamin Marauder BP1764W .177 that I "just had to have" at the time that I now need to part with. I put half a dozen pellets through it when I first got it but never even mounted up the Tactical Mil-Dot TMD624X44-30SP scope I purchase to use with it. I've also got Hill Mk4 pump that needs to go as well. There are also a good number of a variety of pellets that ought to be put to use. The rife is in new condition and the whole shooting match would make for a wonderful quick way to get into PCP shooting.

So how about some ideas on moving this on to someone who will love it and put it to use?

Thanks for any informed replies. I understand that I'd need 10 posts in order to list in the classified ads. Perhaps you can help me get there. I know I'll take a licking on the rifle but better that now than someone else when I pass on.

New bet.- Sidewinder .25 (finally)

Based on the fast infatuation developed for the Sidewinder .30 Cal, after many hours of storm thinking, finally I decided to make the bet for the Sidewinder .25.

Along the decision process I learned a that .22 and .25 are interchangeable just changing the barrel (unscrew one and screw the other) and the magazine. You just need to buy the barrel and the magazine of the other caliber for a reasonable price. So there is no renounce choosing one or the other.

.30 Cal Sidewinder may not interchange with other calibers.

I will share experience as soon as I receive it. Let's see what happens.

Review of the Crosman Challenger 2021 .177cal 10-Meter Competition Rifle

Hello everyone,

Review of the Crosman Challenger 2021 .177cal 10-Meter Competition Rifle

First of March I purchased a new Crosman Challenger to shoot Wadcutter pellets at 10-Meters and have now shot over 1,000 rounds of various Wadcutter and Domed pellets with it.

I will start by saying that I would buy another Challenger without any hesitation for shooting 10-Meter targets and using domed pellets it is extremely accurate at 25-yards. It is an excellent choice for shooting 10-Meter competition. I will also state that I like everything about the rifle except the Safety mounted in front of the Trigger. I prefer a larger easy accessible side mounted Safety.

I took the rifle out of the factory shipping box, read the owner’s manual and gave it a complete review of the rifle itself. Then I cleaned it throughly and oiled all of the required areas and filled the air cylinder. Here is where the real pleasure began for me, this was the ONLY new PCP air gun that I have ever purchased that performed perfectly “right out of the box”. I haven’t even adjusted the factory setting on the two-stage match grade Trigger! I was able to shoot one hole, five shots at paper targets from the get-go. Needless to say that the Lothar Walther barrel is extremely accurate.

Over all looks and esthetics: I give it a 10-score. I like the clean simple design, the Gray and Black color scheme of the Stock material and the contrast to the metal parts.

Over all construction and fit and finish: I give it a 9-score. All machining of the metal parts I found to be very well done and a functional design. Sidelever cocking is very smooth and easy to use. The synthetic stock is very ridged and keeps the overall weight down making it very easy to handle. Cheek Riser and Butt Plate are really easy to adjust and very comfortable ( Butt Plate comes with two different length extensions ). An adjustable Shoe is also standard equipment with a long rail on the bottom of the fore arm of the stock.

The rifle comes from the factory with Crosman Diopter Sight System and uses a Dovetail rail for mounting, but I opted to install a Vector Optics scope. I will shoot it 100% of the time from a bench so a scope is more suitable for me. A big feature for me is the rifle has a Foster fitting to fill the 144cc air cylinder. Crosman states that you can get over 200 shots on a 206 bar / 3000psi fill.

The rifle is not real picky about the pellet choice ( either Wadcutter or Domed ) at 10-Meters, but it excels with the following:

Wadcutter: H&N Finale Match Heavy 8.18gr, H&N Sport 8.18gr, QSY Sports Diabolo 8.18gr and several more, go to Post #34 on this link to see all the Wadcutters that I tested:

Domed: Air Arms Falcon, 4.52mm 7.33gr, Crosman Hunting Pointed 7.4gr and others, go to Post #1 on this link to see all the Domed that I tested:

I only have one Con on this rifle and that is, I wish it had a magazine system or at least a Single Pellet Loader. When you add a scope it restricts the access to load a Pellet straight down into the breach area. Loading a small .177 pellet from the side, under a scope and between the rings becomes challenging, especially for an old fart with big fat shaky fingers.

Bottom line, I love this rifle, it is extremely accurate, very easy to handle, easy to fill the cylinder and a complete enjoyment to shoot.

@Struckat and @igolfat8 let me know if you have any questions.

Panthera vs M3?

I am not wanting to know which is best. They both have a prominent place in their specific market area.
What I am wondering or hoping to get from people who have or had both, is what is the Panthera to a person like me who hunts small game as their main activity with an air gun?
I understand that the Panthera is a purpose designed gun but does it have any attributes that would make it a superior tool for say ground squirrels or chucks?
I have been fighting buying a Panthera because to date I have not been able to see any large improvement in accuracy over an M3 that is properly tuned and it suffers some detriments like low shot count and long overall length.
I am stuck on the idea that maybe I just have a bad case of the newest shiny object syndrome.
enlighten me if you would please
