Done With Bipods, ...bag suggestions?

Wondering what bags people are using when not using a bipod. I don't shoot competitions and am not a fan of shooting paper, outside of sighting in. Most of my shooting is offhand. I am done with getting in the prone position, unless somebody is invading the country, or a rodent is costing me money, I don't bother. I really don't like having the weight of a bipod hanging off the front of the gun on the off chance that I will use it, but if I take it off and need it I'm kinda screwed if I am out and about. I am thinking that one of the new bags that they use for prs shooting would be pretty fast to use in a pinch. Is there any in particular that I should be looking at? Thanks!

.22 FX Hybrid's...do they work for tough and furry critters?

After some experimenting with my customized Taipan Veteran Long .22 and finding what she likes to eat...I've settled on the FX Hybrid slugs at about 985 fps. This is just under 50 fpe but more importantly these things are really accurate out of my setup. The Hybrid's are absolute carnage on every bird I've hit with them so far...I'm talking bird parts flying everywhere. It sounds like a .22 rimfire when I center punch unfortunate fat fowl.

Since I've got these dialed in so well I'd like to stay with them if possible but I'm concerned about larger tougher critters...do these Hybrid's stay together well enough to penetrate a groundhog skull at 75 meters? Has anyone tried the .22 Hybrids on tougher critters than just birds?

Musings from a 3-month old PCP'r

No not a 3-month-old baby shooting PCPs . . . I'm a Septuagenarian who has been shooting PCPs for three months. I am a certified rifle looney (firearms) but discovered PCPs and this forum and started down the rabbit hole back in December with the purchase of an FX Crown Continuum in .25 from Pyramyd Air. This is truly a legacy rifle, especially with the ability to change calibers and barrel lengths, while using the same block and stock. I have since purchased .22 and .17 calibers for it.
1680664097063.jpeg

With days of buying the Crown my next gun was a Benjamin Akela .177 from Airguns of Aizona. There is something about the styling of that rifle that reminded me of the FX Wildcat, which I really liked, but for 1/3 less money. It has turned out to be a very value packed rifle that is very accurate. Only accurate PCPs are interesting to me, and so far, all five of the guns I own are very accurate.

1680664663161.jpeg

Then a month later on Jan 4 I bought a P-Rod .22 from Utah Airguns. I immediately turned it into a carbine with accessories from Buck-Rail and ebay. It has been one of the most fun backyard friendly guns I own. Deadly on rogue starlings and grackles that raid my songbird feeders.

1680664603416.jpeg

My next purchase was another legacy quality gun . . . A Daystate Air Wolf MCT .22 . . . this gun shoots laserbeam accurate in my backyard and is the quietest of all my rifles. The epitome of back yard friendly yet deadly to starlings and grackels. It and the Crown just have a feeling that exudes quality, workmanship and accuracy. The Crown is also very quiet. I bought the Wolf from a member here who had it listed in the classifieds. It has just enough electronics to do everything I need it to do, while being simple enough for me to understand.

1680665074179.jpeg

Just recently I made another purchase last week from Utah Airguns. A Caiman X in .25 . . . This little bull pup is extremely fun to shoot and very accurate. I bought it specifically to take to the field for hunting, mainly, because of its size and weight, as well as the calibers and power. It is not particularly backyard friendly. This would be the perfect backyard gun in .177 I think. Just like the others, I like wooden stocks and the Caiman has a beautifully carved brown laminate stock which is a pleasure to hold and shoulder.

1680665703157.jpeg

One of the things I would change, if I could, would be to slow my roll in buying airguns after the Crown. I like all of my rifles and they all serve a specific purpose and role in my shooting. However, the two legacy quality guns I bought, the .25 Crown Continuum and the .22 Daystate Air Wolf MCT are head and shoulders above the others when it comes to quality, performance, accuracy, fit and feel and personal pride of ownership. I was ignorant of these rifles when I bought them. But now I see the light. I am happy with my Akela, P-Rod and Caiman, but I could have used those funds on an FX Wildcat Mark III or maybe a Brocock Sniper XR Magnum which are much higher quality rifles and can do everything the Akela, P-Rod and Caiman do with one arm tied behind their backs. But if I did "need" another rifle it could be a .303 Daystate Wolverine R HP which would be potent medicine on longer range coyotes for my jaunts out to western Oklahoma. Again, that woul be another legacy rifle. I guess what I am trying to say is that if I had it all to do over again I would stick with the legacy type rifles, to include an Air Arms S510.

I might add that one of the wisest moves I made was to buy an air compressor (Tuxing) and fill bottle to air up my guns. I actually bought two bottles. This makes rapid refills and more shooting.

Scopes are another bug-a-boo. Fortunately, because of my firearm collection, I have plenty of good glass to choose from, though I have bout a few airgun specific scopes.

My poor wife of 49 years is beside herself over yet another hobby I have started. I get an ear full ever so often, but that is just women. I can afford to spend the considerable money it takes when one falls down the rabbit hole, but she has absolutely zero interest in guns and hunting, so there is that.

Bottom line for newbies starting out like me. Go slow in the buying department and buy the absolute best rifles you can afford. If it is just one rifle, take your time deciding which one rifle it will be. Daystate, FX, Air Arms, Brocock/BRK and maybe the new BSA R12 are the brands I would look at first. If you ended up buying one of each that is five rifles. Not bad, if you spread it out over time. Then there is the decision if you go tactical or stay traditional in stocks and styling. I spent a career in the Marines and Navy, so I got my itch scratched when it came to cool tactical weapons. I prefer beautiful wood, simple operating systems and somewhat traditional styling. To each his own.

A broke stripper in Baton Rouge

I've identified a weakness in my 3D printed strippers and moderators. The weakness is their weakness.

I was getting ready for the Cajuns Classic and I wanted to use the new vented moderator design but the dope was off on the closer yardages and I didn't have time to re-dope. I decided to go with the tried and true stripper, since my dope was pretty solid for it.

I got out to the bayou, had a slow start and then I got into my groove. Then, with four lanes left, I went into shotgun mode. Really struggled. Checked the scope mounts, stock screws, smoked crack, nuthin!

I was sighting in for day 2 and I reached out to make sure the stripper was tight. That's when I realized it had broken 3/4 of the way through and was hanging on by a thread!

20230404_213036.jpg

Well, mystery solved. I thought I had packed a spare, but all I could find was the vented moderator. I had about 10 minutes to get re-zeroed and get the dope figured out. I think 20 more minutes would have been great. Surprisingly, I only did 3 shots worse than day 1, but it was not a good feeling having no idea where the pellet was going.

The vented moderator is also susceptible to snapping in half, so I went back to the drawing board. I was thinking I could print some baffles to go inside the HW97 muzzle tube, and maybe print a new end cap with some vent holes in it. I wasn't really feeling this, and as I printed the 3rd of 5 baffles, I had an idea. I really like the cone concept of the air stripper, but I don't want anything that is going to hang on the outside of the end cap. So why not make a vented endcap with a cone on the inside? So that's what I did.

vented_cap_cone.jpg

When it prints, the cone is a little narrower and the air holes are a little smaller, but I'll test this out tomorrow and see if the concept works.

2023 Cajun Spring Classic Results

Well, the 2023 Cajun Spring Classic is in the books. We had a great turnout of 67 shooters from all over the country as well as Puerto Rico, many of whom we only get to see once or twice a year. For me, no doubt, catching up with good friends is the very best part of our competition. Our club appreciates each and every one of you who travelled down to the bayou state to join us!
Saturday dawned cloudy, warm and humid. Shooters were divided between our two woods courses, with the Hunter classes on Lagniappe, and Open/WFTF on Belle Terre. Lanes were predictably dark, especially the first hour, then brightened a bit. But, as the visibility improved the heat and humidity increased making it a challenge to maintain concentration as the morning wore on.
Conditions Sunday were much improved; low humidity and blue skies made for a beautiful day, and better scores for many. After lunch scores were tallied to discover we had 7 WFTF PCP shooters tied with a score of 101 which set up a shoot off for the ages. Once the smoke cleared Danny Ayers emerged the victor.
Also, wanted to make special mention of the fine shooting Brian Van Liew displayed this weekend, winning both the pistol and Open PCP division. Amazing, Brian!

The link below will take you to our results page, compiled by Jennifer Wylie, who probably does More than the rest of us put together to make this happen:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...0PpMWqoMCpSuYMrAqEV1lKzn9PVMl6-C3cvx_/pubhtml
Thanks again for joining us in Cajun country, and for making the Spring Classic such a special event. Wishing you all happy shooting and a great season.
-Griff

WoW...what a difference in my Gauntlet 2 .25

I used to be into benchrest rimfire shooting and got out of it a couple years ago. My son in law talked me into trying the air rifles and I bought a Gauntlet 2 .25 cal. to see if I would like it. The gun shot ok but I was getting a lot of fliers with it no matter what pellet I tried and I could tell it was wasting a lot of air with poor shot count also. With no way to adjust it, I ordered the super tune kit from Hajimoto. While waiting for the kit, I took the rifle apart and polished the air tube, hammer etc. I also noticed the air port in the barrel was smaller than the port in the action, so I removed the barrel and milled out the barrel port to match the action port. I had also made some new cones and air stripper inside the shroud and a couple of barrel supports with o-rings , I machined them out of aluminum. I also put the barrel in the lathe and squared it up and cut a new crown on it and machined a threaded insert for the shroud and then machined a moderator out of aluminum with K-baffles.

I got the Hajimoto kit for it yesterday evening and got it installed. I got up this morning and set up my chronograph at my backyard bench and started testing it with some Hades 26.54 grn. pellets. After a little adjusting I got it shooting the Hades at 900 fps. and it is absolutely a different rifle now.....it will eat out the bullseye at 50 yards with no fliers now....:)
With this kit installed and adjusted, I could not believe the difference it made...the gun is way more quiet now and my shot count has more than doubled....All I can say is Thank You Hajimoto for making this kit available for these rifles....:)

Here's a pic of the rifle and a bullseye with 8 shots at 50 yards.......

Damn You Eyes!

I was trying to see my Vixen 3 gauge before filling last night and that popped into my head...(Funniest movie ever?)
I'm used to squinting because I also have a Vixen Long and they share the same gauge.
Guess it's time for something a bit larger. I have a few digital gauges and a few more analogue I can put on there, but it's too bad Airgun Technology doesn't make their gauges a bit bigger.

Targets  NLA Field targets (lot of 17)

I have 17 used field targets for sale. Most are Gamo bases with custom faceplates. Included are the strings and rollers and a bunch of stakes. Local pick up in Lafayette, Indiana or I'll take them to the Toys That Shoot show in Findley for pick up. I can ship, but they are heavy and it will probably be too costly. Price is $275 OBO.

FWB124D Custom

Hi guys. I was very fortunate to acquire a Steve Corcoran Custom stock for one of my 124s. Cost me a 127S and a pile of cash but I feel it was well worth it.
The action is tuned by David Slade and it is definitely noticeable. Rifle shoots with a soft thunk and no twang. Trigger is set to perfection.
Had this puppy on my range for the morning and was amazed at the accuracy....with open sites to boot!
Anyone else out there with a pretty 124 that they'd like to share some pictures of??? Kindly enjoy these pics and think about how much time and effort goes into crafting one of the functional works of art.

Traditional Springers - what’s going on?

I’ve been watching the auction market and am seeing a resurgence for the traditional springer. Earlier German and British springers with the classic beautiful wood stocks are bringing prices I’ve never seen. Take for example the HW30/R7. These can still be bought brand new in the current “laser engraved” beechwood stock for around $300. For the most part the mechanics haven’t changed for decades. I’m seeing the older ones with the beautifully stained, hand checkered beechwood stocks bring double this and more. And not in “new” condition! I’m also seeing another resurgence for the old school diopter rear sight. This combination has always been my favorite. I’m just an “arm chair” marksman at heart anyway. I’d rather hit 3 out four with the diopter than everything with the scope. Don’t want to get up to pump anything up either. If I don’t feel like shooting that much, I can just look at it and smile. I would think the round table at Weihrauch would be taking notes. Evidently not. These are three of my favorites. The HW55S is about 50 years old, the HW35E is in 22 caliber and new last year and the HW30 has the traditional stock that is about 20 years old. All wearing the Weihrauch diopter sight. The Anschutz diopter also fits the newer Weihrauch 11mm dovetail. The HW35E is just about the last chapter in the traditional barrel cocker anymore. I think the more we talk about this the better chance someone is listening. I know there are some real dandy’s out there. Let’s see them.

Been awhile!

How's it going guys? It's been awhile since I've been on here. I'm still loving my Evol mini and think it's the perfect gun for me. Has never skipped a beat and impresses me every time I take it out. Paired with my 4-20x50 Helos BTR Gen2 it's just such a great, rock solid combo I've come to depend on.

Curious what's new out there? Anything ground breaking since I've been out of it the last 6-9 months? I have no interest in another gun but just curious what cool guns I could have missed in that time lol
