Condor ss ques.

This week I have been revisiting my ss and playing with getting it to shoot 25 grain at about 900-925 fps . I feel I have it where I want it now but in the process of doing it I had to take a lot of shots and I'm noticing my ears are ringing. The gun isn't very loud at all but I think when the hammer slaps the tank it makes a strange ping noise....has this bothered any of you in the hearing dept???

Size Matters! But how much?

Lets take my .25 cal marauder for example, it sports a 19.5" barrel, .225" ports and 53 cc plenum @ 2100~ psi. All the graphs shown are with 33.9 gr.

What happens with various barrel lengths at plateau power? Well for one, if you chop the Marauder barrel in half, it will output basically half the energy, if you double the barrel, it would nearly double the energy, with the right weight projectile, or if you add 10% barrel length, you will add nearly 10% energy potential to the system. This wouldn't come for free, and you would need to dwell and keep the valve open nearly twice as long to get twice the air into a system with twice the barrel of course to obtain twice the energy...

So when someone asks, how many fps will 1" of barrel add? Well that depends on your existing barrel length! For a 10" barrel, 10% FPE, for a 20" barrel, 5% FPE, then you can determine your velocity/fps increase based on that. Clearly adding 1" to a 6" barrel increases FPS a lot more than adding 1" to a 28" barrel.

What happens with various port sizes? Well if I half my port size from .225 down to .1125, I would get half the power at plateau...same applies in reverse, you double power output. 10% increase/decrease should relate closely to a 10% change in energy. Likewise you would use more air as power increases, or less as it decreases at plateau as you're expending more or less appreciable air behind the pellet before it exits the muzzle, provided you adjust your hammer strike. Largest port possible closest to bore diameter allows the shortest dwell time possible in a system as the lift generated to expel for example 1000 mg of air through a .25" equal port for a .25 cal takes less time than that of a .2" equal port or less, thereby increasing dwell time / the pressure pulse making it less efficient than a system with larger porting closer to bore diameter.

Half the pressure? Half the power!

1689739790873.png
vs
1689739807625.png

All this to say, energy increase is fairly linear with Pressure, Barrel Length changes, and Port sizing changes until you reach limitations placed by physics, be it speed of sound, or otherwise, such as exceeding the diameter of bore on air flow path, or exceeding regulator setting/fill pressure. However doubling the caliber would provide closer to 4x the power increase if you're on the hunt for power.

1689740639704.png

And projectile weight where power stops increasing once pellet weight is 1/2 the FPE in grains and velocity is 950~ fps. This can be seen middle of chart.

1689742349908.png

And of course, plenum changing alone...

1689742168465.png

Where the graph goes off the chart its flat and shows no real gains to be had, beyond 3 fpe/ci shows no real gains for a pcp's air delivery system, however a good sweet spot for max power is a bit over 1 fpe/ci with a good workable range being .4 fpe/ci to 1.6 fpe/ci. One could supplement smaller plenum volumes with increases pressure by that is not the point of this discussion as one could simply run longer barrels as well, or larger ports, it all provides more energy if plenum volume won't get you there, unless you want to max everything out, then you should be at your max regulator setting anyhow and that discussion is moot. Hope this helps some tinkers out there understand changes they can or have made to their airguns.

Regulator refresh rate? Oh ya, theres that too...it effects your pressure during the shot cycle!

Question from a new PCP user

I put together a Crosman 2260 that I moved over to PC using the SafePak adapter. I have a 13ci bottle on it and the regulator is set for roughly 1500 psig. I had my son hand pump the tank to around 2500 today and I took it out to shoot it. It's a 20 cal using a Lothar Walther barrel that was a CO2 gun in it's previous life. Very accurate. I'm using the H&N 13.6 grain Barracudas. A previous testing session before I had the gun all together was giving me around 860 FPS. I did not use the chrony today because of weather conditions. The valve is your standard 2400 that is using a bit lighter spring and I have the ports opened up and the valve exit has been angled up. I've also changed the cocking from the little pin thing to a pull back handle threaded directly into the hammer. I have different brass weights that I can use to alter the hammer strike. I have a stronger hammer spring in the rifle also.

Today was a test to see how many shots I could get from a bottle-indicated 2500 psig until I reached the regulator drop off at around the 1500 psig mark. I had probably 40 shots out of it and the bottle gauge was showing around 1000 psig. I was seeing no difference in POI from my first shot to the later shots when the bottle was clearly below the regulated output. I was also getting some of the burping noise with each shot.

So the question is, since I'm still seeing shots with the bottle showing the drop below the regulated pressure that are apparently still at the same kind of velocities that I had when the regulator was at it's 1500 psig reg point, I guess that I am not getting the full pop out of the valve, right? Could need more hammer hit but am I thinking right about this? Next test will be with the chrony to get at the actual velocities across the string as I watch the bottle. I'm going to get the GX CS2 compressor in the next week or so to keep from using the hand pump. Any tips or advice or anything you can think of would be appreciated. This is a fun project! I'll have to post a pic of the thing. Looks right out of "Mad Max".

The original owner said he tried to sell them to some "big airgun companies" who weren't interested in the least...but he found me...and I WAS interested...nice gentleman not in the airgunning community and just wanted someone to take care of his airguns he took such good care of over the years. I just wanted the SLR but after seeing the stock on this Eliminator...WOW!...Guess there is still some good ones out there in the wild yet just have to find 'em...

Slugs and head shots

I have read conflicting reports that slugs work as well or better than pellets with head shots, or that they don't have the penetration ability as a pellet does. Now this may be due to caliber. Possibly a large hollow point at the nose of the slug while great for expansion, not to good for thicker skull. Body shots are undisputed. My curiosity is with limits due to caliber and hollow point size. Obviously a 177 at a large pig is not recommended , just as a 65g slug at 900 FPS is not intended for a chipmunk! LOL! Seriously though, what kind of penetration results have you attained with slugs versus pellet counterparts? I would conduct these tests myself, but I lack a private range.

Any Uragan 2 .30 owners have any extended use updates?

Hello fellow airgun enthusiasts. I’m debating between the original Uragan .30 and the Uragan 2 in .30. There’s another thread on here of the sort but there wasn’t a lot there. Hoping enough time has gone by that folks have had some experiences with their Uragan 2’s.
Anyone have both the original Uragan and the Uragan 2 (600mm) and can say anything about the performance differences between the two?
I do recall when the Uragan 2 hit the market there was a bit of a supply problem with barrels and I believe there were some complaints about the .30 barrel’s performance. Seems like the rumor was that the .30’s weren’t actually CZ barrels or something...
Has that been resolved?
Am I better off buying the original? I like the plain walnut stocks so the laminate doesn’t really factor in to me anyway.
I have the Uragan King and it has phenomenal accuracy with the 44gr JSB’s. Hoping for more of the same from a single tank Uragan.

You know you’re addicted to airguns when…

You have nightmares about them! The rest of my dream was vague but I clearly remember being handed my old Diana 48. I pull the trigger thinking a pellet was in there. Except there was NO PELLET! No joke I woke up with a feeling of disappointment that I had dry fired my springer.
