Rookie Mistakes?

What are some of your airgun rookie mistakes that you learned from? For example, I learned that you get what you pay for. If you are into quality, then don't get the gun that comes in a box on isle 7 next to the gym shorts at Big Five and put a $20 scope on it expecting it to last. I also learned that stores like Wallymart, Big 5, etc. do not sell a high quality ammo and that my cheap airgun with cheap ammo explains a lot about why I made those lousy groups and missed shots on pests. It would be both fun and educamational to read some of your experiences from when you were a newbie.

What is with the FX chrono V2 ?

My friend got one of these, and TBH i am stomped.

It will extremely often miss a shot / several shots in a row completely.
It will some times ( like 1 in every 5 shots ) list a speed for a shot at least 1/4 of the actual speed of 970 FPS
And it have a couple of times barked out a speed of over 3000 FPS

I think my friend is lucky the used chrono are just from December and he got at a very low price, which seem to be for good reason

The damn thing are of course fully charged and fully updated ( with the extended sleep update FW )

Needless to say my old FX pocket chrono on his rifle perform as it should.

Brocock/BRK  Brocock Sniper HR .25 got a Power Tune from AOA

With some help from @Sleeve28 I had been trying to tune my Sniper HR to get some more FPS and FT-LB out of it, I also had reached out to AOA to get advice from them as well.
I managed to get it up to 901 FPS with 61.3 FT-LB with a 33.95 JSB pellet. I was also looking at maybe trading in the gun for the new 30 cal. Sonoran as they do a power tune that includes a new bottle and really jumps up the speed and FT-LB on that gun, then I thought why can't the power tune be done on my 25 cal. so I called AOA and talked to Shane in the service department and he said they had done a shop .25 and it was shooting a solid 960 to 970 ay 68 to 70 FT-LB, I asked about doing my gun and he said to send it down, so I took it apart and sent the action with the gauges to them and they got it shooting the same vas the shop gun and sent it back to me. Today I went and shot it and was getting 944.2 average after 33 shots with and average of 69.1 FT-LB, I was happy with that! I live in Washinton so guessing the difference from Arizona to here would affect the speed a little.
So if you own a Sniper HR in .22 or .25 and you want some better performance you should call Shane at AOA and get the Power Tune done!
I had a 700 CC bottle already and was into to it for $212! including shipping both ways.
Out of the box I was getting on the crono on with the dial on high power I was getting 862.7 FPS and 56.2 FT-LB with the 33.95 Pellet.
Next thing that I am waiting for is SUB-MOA to build a .25 cal. barrel, Shane called, and they told him 6 to 9 months and they should be making some!!

Happy shooting

Kalibrgun  Cricket : Sudden velocity increase

Dear Mates,
I am unable to resolve the issue in my Gen I Cricket. Last month I had tuned it for JSB 25.39 Kings @ 920 Fps with Rgg pressure at 132 bar. Since then, would have fired 12 shots at two different occasions as I and taken the gun to a different location around 14 hours drive two weeks back.

Day before yesterday, I saw the guage on plenum showing 125 bar reg pressure instead of set 132/133 bar.
Therefore, to see the difference on fps, I just chronographed again yesterday. Now is the mystery....
First shot was at 935fps and second shot was at 974 fps.....
I had to loosen (anti cw) the HST, step by step, test... and finally by one half circle and 1/8 more, now the avg fps is 930 fps.

I refilled the rifle, the regulator pressure on guage is 125 bar.

Guage may have some issue....But, how did the velocity increase by itself. I am not able to understand .... I request if the Cricket owners/ experts can please share the feasible reason.

Warm Regards

When Life Gives You Lemons?

Been having issues at work with a particular boss above me and had a discussion through HR about it. Cut to today when said boss above me fires me. Anyway on a random note... I had a lot of spare time suddenly so decided to do some pellet testing with all sorts of weights at 50 yards. Shot some JSB Deep 25.4 (top left?), FX 25.4 (top right?), JSB 20.1(bottom left?) and AEA 21.9(bottom right?) As well as got some sweet shots on some pest birds that I've had my eye on while the airgun has been getting a tune up. Couldn't sleep so decided to download old premier pro and see if I could try my hand at some video editing since I haven't touched an adobe product since highschool. Anyway... This is what I came up with. Will upload groupings of the pellets at 50yds later with labels along with chronograph data once I sort through it all but for now this is all I got in me for today. This all coming out of my FX Maverick .22, 500mm barrel, at 120 bar, 6mm 12gram hammer, PW 7, preload screw at about 6mm out

New Member Post

Hello,

New to the site. Had BB pistols and rifles as long as I can remember. I have a Gamo .177 Hunter with a BSA scope. Break barrel 1000 fps. Still works great after 20 + years. Recently bought a 17 hmr to reach out and touch ground squirrels at 100 yards…beautiful rifle but just too loud for taking multiple shots. The Gamo is only good if I’m on top of the Squirrels at close range.

I just recently discovered the world of PCP and have been really considering the Gauntlet SL series. I like the design and look and prices. I understand the .30 cal is just as loud even with a moderator as .22?

I can’t find any good reviews on the .25 and if it could take a ground squirrel at 100 yards and what would the sound be like with a moderator or even without a moderator?

I like the way I see the Gauntlet .30 hits and I’ve seen enough to think I could want to buy one but I’m afraid it’s going to be just as loud as my .17hmr?

Looking for all of your experiences and wisdom on this subject!

Thank you!
Brian

Umarex  2 questions for Umarex

Question 1: Who in their infinite wisdom designed the Notos magazine, AEA or USAID?

Question 2: Was a public apology made? If so, I missed it.

All seriousness, the rifle is great for the $ but that magazine system is a tad bit less than to be desired. It’s like using braille to load that sucker-no offense to those impaired. Those who Notos, knows…

PCP Rifle  SOLD WTS Brocock Sonoran .30

This is one I REALLY wish had a traditional stock….This gun with the Sub MOA barrel is insanely accurate with 44.75 and 50.15 as well as the AEA and JTS variants. Being a big, tall guy the semi-bullpup just doesn’t fit me very well.

I am the original owner. Comes with the AoA power tune as well as 700cc 300 bar bottle, one magazine.

Has maybe 50 shots through it in total.

Note-Atlas bipod, scope, rings, 0dB not included….

Thinking 1850 and we can split the shipping.

Beeman  Bought a Used R9 .20

I'm not going to say the site I got it from but it's a R9 in .20, came with a scope and Maccari Tune Kit, I probably paid too much but it was still cheaper buying a new stock one with a scope. I called them today and they said it was in excellent condition and shot good. I don't think they checked accuracy but I'm sure it'll be fine. I bought a few tins of pellets to go with it. Hopefully I'll like when it gets here. I already have an R9 in .177 and like it a lot so maybe this one will shoot smoother with the tune.

HW/Weihrauch  A simple question for the springer tuners

I've got limited experience...I put a TbT kit into my HW35 without difficulty. New rifle. Cleaned it, deburred it, lubricated it with Krytox, even polished the piston. Nick has some great videos and it really wasn't difficult. But after reassembly, the rifle simply wouldn't cock. The latch wouldn't engage the trigger assembly. Took it apart, redid everything and...no change. Put the original spring assembly in and...no problem. Tried it again....the same thing. E-mailed Nick and he responded quickly and asked me to measure the depth of the piston, which I did and it was the same as in his video. I did e-mail him a photo of the measurement and a video of the rifle with me trying to cock it, but no reply. Looks like he had shoulder surgery, so no worries. My question is this: what is the most common reason for this scenario? I assume it is that the compressed spring is too long to allow engagement and I just need to remove a coil or two. But I don't want to do that unless absolutely necessary. The rifle shoots great with just the cleaning and lubing with Krytox. Suggestions? Cheers! Rick Here is the rifle from today...

FX  Old FX Royale 400 still holds its own

I love how the simple old FX guns just keep shooting well, and looking good while they do it!
This old Smooth Twist, un regulated Royale 400 with its clunky old steel bottle will average half inch 50m groups all day, everyday.
After a new pressure gauge, and replacing a few seals I thought I'd put it over the chrony.
Averaging 890 fps with 18gn JSB's, ES of 18 and SD of 3.9, I'm happy with that for an unregulated gun.

Not many free spots left on the target after sighting in some thermal scoped rimfires, but you can see the Royale groups marked.
Some good and some average groups there, but overall I'm happy with that for a hunter at 50m.
Apologies for the messy workspace, but it's what happens when you squeeze play in between work I guess. :)

Taipan  Taipan Vet 2s - 700mm & 550mm Pellet and Slugs at 30 yards

There's been a lot of postings gong around about the Taipans lately so I thought I would throw in mine. The targets are 5 shot groups each of various slugs for the 700mm and both slugs and pellets for the 550mm. Both guns are about a year old so they are in the "newest group except for the new ADF versions. The targets are 30 yards away and I was on my bench with an Accu-tac bipod on the front and my sand bag on the back. 12mph wind today but I have some enclosure to take it out somewhat. No change in tune on either gun, just a full tank of air (250bar). The shot groups should be pretty steady although I may have a bit of movement on a couple, but I left them in. I did clean the barrels before the shooting. I hope this helps with some pellet slug choices based off my guns.

Here is the lane and the setup.

Brocock/BRK  Ghost hp cannot be fixed

you know i bought this brand new its 3 months old been back 4 times just shot 20 rounds on the 21
clunk psssst locked trigger and dumper every ounce of air out the barrel to the point it had frost on the gun.
called the dealer showed him my frosty ghost he was speechless, felt horrible and said just ship it back for a full refund.
wow he said, I've never had such a patient customer, you never complained i said nope time will tell.
I'm looking at a drs tactical pro 600mm 25 Cal which he said is not available as of right now
he also said you may want to wait for the leopard its due about the same time and will have them.
so now i have some time to think, this was more of a let down more than anything.
its also the only 22 i have all the rest are 25.

Crosman  1968 Crosman 760 PowerMaster

Just picked up this Crosman 760 ”Power Master”. It has a April 1968 date. I shot my cousins every summer back in the late 60’s. My wife also said she had the same gun when she was a girl as soon as she saw it. It shoots strong at over 500 fps with eight pumps. I bought it as non working but I guess the guy didn’t know how it operated because it works perfectly. Cleaned right up. All original. Hardly used in nearly 60 years. Love the “tootsie roll” cocking forearm. It is fun to have an American made pump bb rifle to shoot. Brings back very good memories. Anyone else have one?

RAW Rapid  Amazing group, RAW HM1000X .22 18.13 grain 70 yards 8 shots

Sometimes we get such groups that we ourselves become amazed.

Following video is showing a group of 8 shots at around 940 fps with 18.13 grain JSB pellets at 70 yards distance.

This is the same RAW that had come with a bad barrel and I had installed BSA barrel in it.

It is shot by the owner. I have asked him to shoot again at leat 3 or 4 groups at same distance to get average size of group.

what scope would you recommend?

I shoot in my back yard mostly at targets, from a bag rest at a range of 65 to 70 feet. Using a break barrel that cost under $200 and came with a 4x32 scope. Sometimes I do shoot at a pest or two. Now that I have retired, I find myself using it more but having trouble seeing the target, so I put the scope on. Now I am finding that I have to remove my eyeglasses to get a good sight picture, (both eyes open) Not sure what type of scope to look for but would like more magnification. Would like to keep the price low, (to keep wife happy) and my wallet. I know that will limit my options, but all suggestions will be greatly appreciated Thanks.

Air Tanks  SOLD Scott 30 minute (44 cu ft) SCBA tank $180

For sale is this Scott 30 minute tank with new 300 DIN flow restricted valve and 20" micro bore fill hose. I lucked into several of these tanks that were obviously surplus units (your tax dollars at work). I removed the Scott valve and replaced it with a new fill assembly with a male foster fitting on the tank and fill hose with female fosters on each end and a strain relief the whole length. This tank makes a great compromise between the large 60 minute tanks and the small 90 cu in bottles. This tank is dated 09/07 and therefore past it's "15 year service life". Due to it's age , no commercial business will fill it. You must have your own compressor that is capable of filling a bottle of this size. Use this at your own risk and assume responsibility . I have aired this tank and checked for function , and it is ready to go. Selling for $180 including tracked and insured shipping to the conus. To comply with DOT rules , the tank will be shipped empty . Not interested in trades or offers at this time . Please deal by PM . Thanks for looking. Herb...................PS, this is the last one I have for sale.
