  • Question
Other  Which one should I get?

Benjamin Marauder .25 or The Brocock concept .177?

Wassup guys/girls, been wanted to get into this hobby for a while and I've been browsing the forum for a while and been wondering what should I get for my first pcp air rifle. I'm mostly want to hunt on rabbits, squirrels, and doves. Honestly, I really don't care about the weight of the air rifle as long as it has a solid build.

Various Types of Optical Glass Explained

I found this information useful when shopping around for glass whether it be riflescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, etc. I would read product descriptions and not really understand what some of the finer details of glass types and glass coatings are. Me being curious, I began looking for answers. I found the information in the following link to be very helpful. The photographs and diagrams are very helpful in understanding some of what's explained.

“How to Choose Field Scopes: Comparison of ED glass and ordinary lens”

Glass Coatings Explained (check out the source reference link to Schott at the end of the article):

As I come across more information or when I take time to dig into my bookmarks I may add more information to this thread.

Lens Coating Longevity - This is an area that I know very little about and I'm still learning. As new scope manufacturers emerge offering better quality for a lower price, these products are often produced overseas. In my reading, older scopes with glass produced in Germany and Japan seemed most desired by glass aficionados. Glass producers from these countries have been touted for their quality. More recently it seems that glass produced in the Philippines is second rate, but of reasonable quality for good mid-tier scopes (Sightron is a brand that comes to mind with good glass produced in the Philippines). More recently Athlon Optics has apparently amassed a huge following with several scopes in their line manufactured with Chinese glass that shooters all over the globe post on myriad online platforms about the bang for your buck quality from glass, reticles, to turrets and over-all construction. Since this is a glass thread, I began to wonder, What makes Athlon glass so good? When I visited their site, a lot of the descriptions lead me to believe it is the coatings applied to the glass. Looking at their lower-level budget offerings: the Talos and the Argos. On the Talos, Athlon describes their coatings as, "Fully multi-coated" and that "Athlon Optic's fully multi-coated glass gives you better light transmission with optimum brightness and true color across the entire light spectrum." What exactly does this mean? Which coating processes are used? What specifically are the benefits of each coating material? Do all of the coatings work well in conjunction with one another? Athlon boasts of their coatings on the Argos as "XPL coating" that is "A protective coating that gives you extra protection on the exterior lenses to prevent the scope from enduring dirt, oil, and potential scratches." An extra coating in addition to what? Most importantly, how long do these coatings last? Have there been tests to determine any duration of effective lens coating's durability? Are those results published? Can consumers access that data?

Source of coating quote on the Argos line: https://athlonoptics.com/product-category/rifle-scopes/athlon-optics-argos-btr-gen2/
On Talos line: https://athlonoptics.com/product-category/rifle-scopes/athlon-optics-rifle-scopes-talos-btr-gen2/

Some questions to ponder:
1) What are the most desirable and essential rifle/pistol scope glass coatings?
2) Is one particular process of applying these coatings superior producing better quality?
3) How does the consumer identify if he manufacturer is using quality materials for their glass coatings?
4) What differentiates top-tier glass from mid-tier glass? From budget glass?
5) How long do optical coatings last on top-tier glass before exhibiting significant deterioration compromising image quality or protective properties?

I found this article interesting and somewhat helpful , although it is focused upon camera glass.

MAGNUM Pistol Field Target LIVES!

Pistoleros,

As I’ve been threatening for a while now, looks like I’m fathering another Field Target bastard. Weather permitting, MAGNUM Pistol Field Target will be born March 1.

Because the necessary, but missing puzzle piece has now been found to make the previous gleam in my eye become reality (no, not Viagra), MagPFT is growing from conception to delivery. Translation- it’s happening! 😃

Said missing puzzle piece was a production air pistol capable of power and accuracy enough to stretch pistol field target not only beyond all previous bounds, but beyond the bounds of the imagination. Correction- any imagination but mine.

Power limit for Magnum PFT is 40 foot pounds; DOUBLE that of EXTREME Pistol FT, and 333% that of AAFTA PFT! Maximum target distances will be 80 yards; no elaboration or enlivenment required.😂 But in deference to the extreme pistol distances, scope magnification limit rises to 16X, rather than 12X. Otherwise MPFT rules are the same as Extreme PFT rules.

My next TEXtreme Airgun Sports Extreme Field Target weekend being the first weekend of March, a Magnum Pistol class will be recognized in the Saturday, March 1 Extreme PFT match; shot on the EPFT course, incorporating Extreme pistol and rifle targets. If at least three shooters enter the Magnum pistol class, there will be awards.

The missing puzzle piece making my lively imagination possible-reality came from the most unlikely of places… CHINA! However, strange bedfellows produce ‘unique’ offspring, that might otherwise never live.

Contrary to (ALL) Chinese products of the not-too-distant past, the Huben GK1 semi-automatic PCP pistol is neither cheap, nor toy. Nay, it is fine quality, accurate, powerful with a capital P, and expensive with a capital E! And although it doesn’t go where no others have gone before (Crosman produced excellent quality .22 semi-automatic Co2 pistols in the 1960s), the GK1 takes its combination of quality, power, accuracy and performance to a reasonable-size place none others have gone before. And also an exhilarating-FUN place none others have gone, or experienced before. But rather than elaborate on that previous sentence, I’ll leave such elaborations to countless GK1 posts on this forum (and elsewhere, like YouTube).

Believe it or not, the 40 foot pound Magnum PFT power limit is a perfect example of a perfect rule; that being an equipment rule that not only recognizes a particular piece of equipment endowing substantial advantage(s), but imposes a restriction not just minimizing, but negating said advantage(s). Hence, forty foot pounds was decided on to counteract the ballistic advantage a 50+ foot pound .25 GK1 would have over a less powerful .22 GK1. And although there are other reasons, that reason is genius enough.

The power-limit rule will have the same effect on other, as-powerful pistols that might come available when and if other manufacturers recognize financial opportunity. In fact, word in the airgun grapevine is there is one manufacturer possibly doing so; purportedly soon. I won’t bother to expound on rumor or speculation, other than to say it sounds feasible. It would be nice to have an American-made😳 option.

Happy Handgunning, Y’all!

P.S.- Although I realize there is no size reference for this 19 shot, full-magazine group shot last night at 50 yards in light winds with my .22 GK1 firing 18.1 grain JSBs at 863 FPS/30 foot-pounds, the group measures 1.20" center-to-center.

P.P.S.- Where else ya'll gonna get this kinda cutting-edge reporting?🙄

Accessories  NLA Drop-down Tank Adapter

Talon Tunes Drop-down Tank Adapter
1. Has 5000psi tank pressure gauge
2. Precision made
3. One-way quick fill port on other side
4. M18x1.5 threads
5. Lowers tank 1 inch
6. Extends tank 2 inches

I was experimenting with a larger DIAMETER air cylinder for my PCP air rifle.

So, I purchased this adapter to lower the air cylinder one inch further from the rifle barrel.

So, if you are considering a larger air cylinder for your PCP air rifle and you think an additional 1 inch will help, then this may be a solution.

HW/Weihrauch  My Venom HW77 Verminter

Refinished the stock with Napier's London Oil, new seals and new Macarri spring. Polished the internals and lubed. Initially shooting JSB 18.13 pellets at 16-16.5 fpe. Super smooth cocking cycle. Not difficult to cock for an old geezer like me. No buzz or twang and a nice light Record trigger. I noticed that the sears were all polished so someone did some work on it.

Next I will start zeroing the scope and shoot some 5 shot strings with various pellets. I imagine the Venom will produce some great results.(y) Some misc photos:

Daystate  Sapphire.25

I bought a gorgeous Daystate Wolverine Sapphire in .25 caliber for EFT.

I love love love the Wolverine; especially the new sapphire stock!!

Unfortunately I had to send it home for repairs due to obvious clipping issues even when using an oversized moderator.

Quick turnaround and Got it back yesterday and set it up this morning, Sunday and I’ll be damned ….. still clipping albeit not as significantly because they tried to cure the issue by using a larger diameter 0DB moderator while explaining to me that a .22 moderator baffle was inadvertently used during moderator assembly. 🫤

Obviously I have a barrel or shroud that is tweaked or a breech block that is not 100% true?

I’ve asked for a new barrel and shroud to see if the fix is simple but I’d hate to think the breech isn’t machined correctly on DayState’s flagship mechanical rifle.

I own 4 Wolverines and this is the first airgun out of over 20 that I’ve set up that has had a clipping issue.

I tried several different .25 moderators including Huma, Air Impulse, Donny FL, STO, and 0DB and unless I used a .30 moderator zero was impossible. 💩

N/A  A Few Pistols

I've said several times that I dont particularly care for air pistols and am not that great of a shot with them anyway.... so why do I have a section of wall of them in my gun room?
Was in there tinkering around today since the weather is still crap here and decided to snap a little pic.

Pistols.JPG

Diana  Model 34 Washers on barrel bolt?

When putting one back together that I just got (that was a train wreck) there was no washers in the recess over the barrel pivot bushing. I was watching a video on YouTube yesterday and it looks like on his particular rifle there were thin washers.
My gun is a very early T1 made in 82 or 92(can't tell if it's 9 or 8)

So what do you think are they missing or possibly some early guns didn't have them?

Other  Two for sale near me

The local gun shop, that deals mostly in muzzleloaders and other vintage firearms, also gets in air guns occasionally. I have bought several there. Currently they have two I have handled and thought about, however I think they are a little high on the prices and will not negotiate. Both guns are in like-new condition. One is a Marksman model 55 break barrel and the other is a Benjamin multi pump, with wood stock & forearm. The price is $80 on the Marksman and $100 for the Benjamin. What do you all think?

PCP Rifle  NLA Price Drop - Vulcan 2 .30 Caliber $950

I have a Vulcan 2 .30 Caliber for sale. It's in excellent condition. The gun is totally stock and has been a safe queen. It's never been adjusted. Less than a tin of pellets through it. It is a hammer of an airgun and I think too powerful for my neighborhood. I love hammering squirrels with it!! It shoots JSB 44.75 grain pellets at 870 fps. It is very accurate. It includes 3 magazines, fill probe, degasser, AGN filling hose, o-rings and a hard case. I'm asking $1100 $950 shipped to you in CONUS. I prefer Paypal, but if you would rather do something different, let me know. I have sold many airguns on this forum and have all good reviews. Scope is not included.
