Surprising scope comparison

Are “high end” scopes all they are cracked up to be? Or are mid range scope 99% as good without the prestige of a tier 1 scope?
Before you go jumping down my throat, I’m sure there are comparisons from reviewers, scope experts, etc that discuss a smidge of chromatic aberration at the tiny edge, yadda yadda blah blah blah…

Last weekend my hunting buddy Gerry @Gerry52 and I compared the Athlon Cronus 4.5-29x, Athlon Midas BTR gen2 4.5-27x and Sightron S-TAC 4-20x side by side outdoors around noon on a sunny CA day. We compared optical quality only.

All three scopes were set to 20x, mounted on guns sitting side by side on a table overlooking a winery and trees in the distance. We took turns looking through each one at least 3 or 4 times. And our conclusion was they all had excellent optical clarity and pretty much looked the same. We both thought that for hunting purposes out to a couple hundred yards, there was practically no difference.

Take it for what it’s worth. The S-TAC normally sells for about $500 but can be had at times for about $300. The Midas BTR gen2 normally around $600 but sometimes can be had for $450, and the Cronus normally about $1600 but at times discounted as low as $1000.

If I had to do it again, I’d buy two or three Athlon Midas BTR gen2 or Midas TAC than one Cronus and be perfectly satisfied. When I shot the Long Range event in Oregon the end of April, and did quite well, I used the Midas BTR gen2.

Just my two cents on the matter. Going anywhere much over $500 (discounted) illustrates the law of decreasing returns…

Do 0.177's pop?

I thought my back yard set-up was "neighborhood friendly", I was wrong. My wife heard me dispatch a squirrel and said it "sounded like a gun". I'm shooting a 22 Dreamline, pushing out Hades pellets at 890fps. I'm pretty sure what she heard is the pellet hitting the "target". It make a pretty decent "pop" when a squirrel takes one to the noggin.
My only experience with 0.177 is with a springer which makes enough noise its difficult to tell how much noise the pellet strike makes.
My question for the Airgun Nation: are 0.177's quieter than 0.22's? Will they reduce the noise of the pellet strike on small pests? Thanks.

Am i missing something?

Perusing RMAC 100 yr results and trying to locate the whole score board. If someone would guide me to the results , I'd appreciate it.
Now, why I posted, didn't the rifles used be listed w/ shooter and position?
Interested in SKOUT results. Wondering if they did t fair out. All things being fair, when Impacts are in @ 40 to 1, it's not really much of a bragging right when you say Impacts won.
I see the SKOUT dropped the price to 2495. This might start a cascade effect in this overpriced trade.
Okay, shoot at me.🤔
OOOOH, I JUST READY THAT SNEAKY ADD A LITTLE CLOSER. NO EXTRA BARRELS! So not the big sale I first understood.

Found a hens tooth.

Managed to purchase this Donny FL Emperor for my new Bushbuck.
Looking forward to seeing,(hearing), how it works on the .45.
I have to use hearing protection while shooting it as is.
It will have to wait for now. The stock pictured is all that remains of the Bushbuck.
The actions has been returned to AOA for repair.
It started leaking.
I will share as the drama unfolds.

How far with a pellet?

I was bored a couple days ago so I took my best 33.95gr shooter and started doing a test but the heat was ruthless. I put a target at 120 yards and 180 yards just to narrow down where I need to focus. At 120 yards my gun was still good. At 180 I think my pellets became little paratroopers. When I get time I will incrementally work my way out 10 yards at a time. Just curious and for conversation sake, how far have you guys shot pellets accurately? Doesn’t matter the caliber. I have taken birds with my Taipan .22 shooting 18’s out to 130 yards. Who knows, it might have been luck or the gun could go to crap at 131 yards. But I never spent any time with pellets shooting over 100 to see where each gun, pellet and tune goes off the tracks. So to save me a lot of shooting, I’d like to hear just how far you guys have shot them and still hit stuff. Be it a can, spinner or target. Maybe this has been discussed but I’ve never seen it.

Another first PCP Post

Just now getting into airguns for pests around the house and backyard plinking. Researching rifles and air compressors but haven't made the dive yet. Lots of good information on here and many vendor sites online.

I've been debating on going with a new Umarex Notos since they are back in stock or something in the Classifieds, preferably in 22. Challenge is the rules for Classifieds with 10 posts and 10 activity days but I feel like it's a better buy. Outside of Notos and Prod, any opinions on preferred brands? Any brands I should steer clear of? I was tempted at the AGT Vixen ad but is this overkill for a first PCP?

Blitz .22 keeps jamming up even without a mag just dry firing on full auto, Only shoots one shot an I have to cock bolt back to shoot again on full.

So today I got to shooting the blitz yesterday it was doing fine no jams. today each shot I have to pull bolt back to shoot again, I did have bolt way back and turned up in the notch for 7 hours but that's not even that long so I don't know. Why is it jamming now each shot now, If I cant fix the problem its a return as I don't want it I bought it alone for the full auto an If I cant get that to a level of reliability then its useless for me. I added a donny fl adapter an am running a tatsu, was doing fine yesterday with exact same setup. It jammed 5 times in a row then it cycled for like 16 shots an again jammed I was dry firing to make sure its not a mag issue.

Need advice Hw98 or hw97 for hunter field target or Diana 54

Hello,
I am looking for another springer for hunter class or possibly WFTF. I currently have a tx200 that I just put in a cs1000 stock. I put in arh spring in it and that's it. Shoots great. I would like to try a HW for comparison. I'm a lefty so either one would work great. I would definitely change spring because I want under 12fpe. Honestly I love the cs1000 stock so I would probably order one for the gun. I know barrel droop is a problem with the 98. I know they aren't as easy to work on/break down as my tx200. I think I can figure it. I honestly want a butter smooth shot cycle and cocking is not an issue for me. I mostly see tx,98s, one 95 at matches and that's it. What would you guys that has shot them in matches recommend? I'm not concerned on how the shoot of the bench but how the shoot of sticks or knee. I think I want to use vortex piston seal but probably an arh spring or tbt. I welcome any advice. Thanks

The Joys of Cheap RainStorms

So a Very Good Friend picked up a Gen 1 .22 RainStorm at Toyz that Shoot a couple years ago.
No magazine, stock was broken and a bad fix to that. Got a good price on it but just never liked it much.
Being We wheel and deal with each other alot I asked if I could buy it. Sure enough after some cash and parts deals? It became mine.
I let it set for a month or more as I searched for magazines. I finally was guided to someone that sold me 2 for a VERY good price!
Let it sit a few more weeks before I filled it to get to testing things. And here is where I kind of went Stupid.
I filled off the SCUBA tank so just under 200 BAR which is the rateing for the RS. No problem. But pressure gauge only went to just over 100 BAR.
Asked my Friend and he said he believed the gauge was bad. DER OK! Said I. Loaded a magazine and took some shots. What a weak POS I got. Or so the STUPID voices in my head told me.
Now some of the voices speak in languages I don't understand and some times they go missing. I assume to visit relatives or a strip club.
Well today one of them showed back up and told me "You know if there's a Regulator in there the gauge is reading fine right?"
Thank God that voice speaks English! (Well with a Scottish accent but I can live with that)
Degassed and took the tube off. Sure enough a Huma Reg and one of those danged 'Brissle brush' depingers!

Now I have a Huma Reg tester so I can reset the reg for Power over shot count. (Oh the joys of a compressor!)
So taking a gamble on what looked like a possible parts Gun? I'm pretty happy with how things are turning out as I Love the Evanix Guns!
This one has alot of work to get it where I want it but Scotty says I did good.
