Tuning  Sub half MOA air rifle

Hello folks,

Im just somehow getting bored with the general "subMOA" accuracy rule.
Started to brainstorm about the "sub0.5MOA" accuracy class. Lets clarify, it doesnt mean some one group per year on a lucky day but consistent, moreless "all the time" sub 0.5 MOA grouping. I set my goal to 100m with no wind for this.
For the first is there some so hell accurate air rifle on the market? Mostly talking about FAC rifles but not super high energy, maybe up to 40-60J (to make it easier to hold for the 0.5 MOA accuracy) but sub12 could be also.
Im sceptic that its so easy just to order a rifle and thats all. Im ready to experiment, modify, do custom rifle parts, etc. Basically any tuning.
But if you would be an engineer, and you have been told "hey make me a sub 0.5MOA air rifle" what would be your starting point. What rifle you would get to start from as a baseline? (no, please just dont write FX impact)
I have a Prophet 2 in .25 and its capable for 0.7 MOA groups pretty easily, without any custom special modifications. Maybe it would be a great rifle to start with with a .22 barrel. I believe the .22 is similarly accurate as the .25.
What would you start with and what is your opinion in general? Please not that this topic is meant to be "scientific" and sophisticated. So try to aim your comments this way.
Thank you.

JSB patent??

Did JSB used to have a patent on pellets? I mean they always had distinct pellets but now like H&N came out with 18gr and 15.9gr just like the JSBs and JTS is making comparable ones now too. I didn't know if something ended the last couple years that now they can make "copies" essentially. I welcome it as ive personally seen a decline in consistency with JSB over the last few years in the 18gr which turned me off them completely and now only go for 15.9gr versions. And many people have had issues with the MK1 and MK2 Heavy .25s and of course the .22 MRDs.

The difference between Skill ( the odds ) and Luck

Hello everyone,

This morning I shot a Squirrel with my .177 cal Diana Bandit with a Red Dot scope.

So you say, big deal folks do that all the time.

Well this shot was at 25-yards :D . Now I must admit that I have shot at this guy about a dozen times already and missed . This make me think what is Luck or Skill ? If you are aiming to place that tiny little Green Dot on a target at 10-meters then you would expect to hit or at least get close with a hit. But at 25-yards ?????

What do you fellows think.

Hello from a newby in central Ohio

Hello everyone,

I'm a bit new to airguns having only shot pump ones when I was a kid, and then getting a gamo whisper cat break barrel that isnt as silent as reported.

Now I've been looking at PcP airguns and pouring over videos and reviews trying to do my due diligence and research. Many are contradictory or just seem like advertisements.

Ill mostly be doing plinking, but wanting something to do small game like squirrels rabbits or cats. I want something reliable. I dont mind spending more for something better quality if theres a legit reason for it. I'm also looking at something quiet which is the draw to airguns with moderators. I'm wanting something quality, accurate, reliable, can shoot slugs or pellets, quiet and doesnt require alot of fiddling once dialed in. I'm looking at brk, the avenge x, fx but open to others. I dont care about brand names as long as its reliable accurate and good customer service.

Whats normal price for used air guns? Ive seen a few in various places but they seem priced high. I have a lead on a laminate FX crown mk1 in 25 but not sure what a fair price would be.

I'm going to a shoot near columbus ohio sunday and hoping to get some info there and look at various setups.

Any feedback is welcomed.

Who Has Been Coyote Hunting Lately?

The coyotes around me have been going nuts over the last week and I’m getting the itch to get after them but I simply don’t have the time. They’ve been waking me up howling and barking between midnight and 3 am. So this evening I heard one open up around 7:30pm and I couldn’t take it any more. I fetched one of my cheap diaphragm callers and started talking to them. I located one and got it to talk back. We chatted a couple of times over the course of 15-25 minutes. I then went in, grabbed a .357 Bulldog, put a little more air in it, loaded two slugs in a mag, grabbed my Trigger Sticks, and went outside hoping one would do something dumb. Shot in the dark, I know, BUT either it’s mating season or there are some young and dumb coyotes around here. Either way, I’m getting anxious waiting for an opportunity to take time off to hunt. If I can get a good 3-4 weeks in that will be lovely.

What have the coyotes been doing in your area as of late? What type of behavior(s) have you encountered? Have you been successful in hunting any lately? Are you day or night hunting them? Which gun and ammo combo are you using? What sort of nighttime setup(s) are you running: thermal, night vision, or torch/spotlights?

Benjamin  Benjamin Akela .177

hello everyone, this is my first post on here and what would be better to talk about than my first PCP airgun! I just ordered an Akela in .177 from airgun depot (220 bucks off with a free Benjamin hand pump) I have been trying to do some research online while im waiting for it to arrive but I am having some difficulty finding good information. does anyone have any chronograph numbers for the .177? I have seen some people saying they're sending 10.34s at around 1000 fps, is that the norm? also, other than shortening the hammer spring is there any mods anyone would recommend? once I get the gun in the mail and spend some time getting to know the gun I will be posting a ton of content on my YouTube channel as well to help spread any information shared here. thanks guys!

A Question to the Discriminating and Detailed Bench Marksmen...

...about “Being Drawn to The Shot”. Has this happened to you?

I’m talking about a previous shot on a target. Today, while practicing out to 50 using an 8.5 x 11 copy of an N50 card, I tried to put at least three shots in each of the 12 targets. I’d start at number one, end in number 12, then go back to 1, and each time rechecking wind and using the sighters available.

What I’ve noticed for a long time, even back to the shoot n see target days, it seems follow up shots get drawn to previous shots on the target. Didn’t matter to me back then as my rest wasn’t the best. But with my equipment upgraded and I try to cover all my bases during set up, I really took notice today. While aiming at that tiny center dot within a 3/8” circle, it didn’t matter if I adjusted elevation or held for windage, 90% of the time a second and even a third shot would land on where the first shot was placed. So some of the targets have all three within the X, some 3/4” away and low at 7:00 all stacked on top of each other, some 1/2” high at 1:00, again, all three on top of each other.

My questions: if wind was a steady factor of say 3-5 mph, does the angle of the shot from bench to target have a big play in this?(I’m on a slight 10 degree slope downwards from bench to target, btw). Three clicks left to right at 50 yards will show a change, right? In my case it doesn’t matter, the second shot lands on the first.

Or is it cheek weld sight picture thru scope? I make dang sure I have no black rims and my picture is wide open clear edge to edge.

Is it cant? My set up is a front tripod attached to arca rail and a ST rear monopod. I prelock my cant level with the ball head and unless I make a large swing left to right on the tripod, I never have to readjust the level.

Lastly, and I’m just throwing this out there- does it have anything to do with parallax adjustment not in “Sync” with a perfect ocular adjustment that’s typically done first when setting up a scope for the first time?

So before advising on this, just remember, my hold offs or windage/elevation adjustments are going to be as if I’m at a competition, a click or two there is usually what’s needed, so please don’t ask if I click over 10 clicks worth does it still follow the first shot, or hold off 3 whole MOA, because of course not it wouldn’t.

And remember, this is at 50 yards.

Delrin For Moderator Baffles?

Has anyone tried using Delrin for moderator baffles? It's easy to machine..easier than aluminum..

I'm thinking of making an attachment to replace the RTI barrel centering part with the teeny-tiny (semi-useless) holes. The hole size just seems insufficient to allow air to pass into the shroud, plus half the hole OD is blocked by the part's O-ring.

The concept is to replace the RTI part and make something like a muzzle brake that will be contained inside the shroud and shroud end-cap. The part would double as the barrel centering device and allow for unrestricted air flow back into the standard ~1" OD shroud and around the barrel..

I could probably use aluminum, but feel it would be easier to test something made with Delrin..if it's strong enough.

FX  Impact m3 1st reg has a mind of it's own

Yesterday while plinking I started getting extreme variation of fps. I noticed the Guage on 1st reg would pop back to 180, settle at 170, slowly sink to 140, stay there a few seconds and then repeat the whole thing. After a few cycles it would settle on 150 and stay there until the next shot. The reg was set at 160. The 2nd reg is set at 140 and is rock solid. Any suggestions, lame or serious would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jim

This will make you smile

My neighbor's eleven year old son killed his first buck late Friday afternoon, a four pointer. One shot through the heart. Dropped him where he stood. Saturday afternoon he picked up eleven doves. He said he lost two cause his grand daddy had the dog. His daddy's feet haven't touched the ground yet. Then, Monday afternoon he killed three Armadillos in the backyard with a old .22 caliber break barrel air rifle. What a Labor Day weekend ! Armadillos, I still find it hard to believe those sum beeches are in the South Carolina low country.

.22 vs .30 as an all round gun, which would you recommend?

I’m looking to get a PCP to shoot pigeons off my roof as well as a gun to shoot prairie dogs with. So far, the best I’ve found is a Daystate Red Wolf with a MTC 12x50 scope in .22 cal. The .22 seems most versificeer as it can shoot very light pellets around my house as well as slugs for prairie dogs. The .30 cal seems great for prairie dogs but hard to use around the house…. Anyone have suggestions?

FX  Same Strange Problem With 2 Different FX Impact M3 1st Stage Regulators

UPDATE:
FX got back to me about this issue. Their response:

"Honestly not sure why the regulators are giving you that many problems, even after rebuilding.
The 1st regulator stack should be "(( )) (( )) (( ))" with 12 washers.
19696-M (original brass piston) is not compatible with the 1st regulator, but 20858 (newest brass piston) is compatible.
Best Regards,
Kayla"

So when I ordered the brass pistons to replace the delrin ones, instead of sending me 20858 (newest brass piston), they accidentally sent me the ones that are incompatible with he 1st reg (19696-M).
As for the washer stack, (( )) (( )) (( )) is how FX is doing it now.

I'll give an update when the right brass pistons arrive and I install, test.

ORIGINAL POST:

From day one, the 1st stage reg on my Impact M3 was slow to recover and slow to respond or non-responisve to changes in pressure setting. One day it wouldn’t fill past 140 bar, even though it had been set to 190 bar. I degassed the gun turned the reg screw 1/4 turn out, refilled the gun, and it still read 140 bar. I turned it another 1/4th turn - still read 140.

The 2nd reg was set to 150 bar, so it read the same as the 1st: 140 bar. The bottle pressure read 220 bar. I tried a different 1st reg gauge to confirm that it wasn’t a problem with the gauge. Swapped out the stock wika with a Sekhmet. Still read 140 bar on both the 1st and 2nd regs.

Next I took the 1st reg apart and did these things:
  • inspected all the surfaces on the delrin piston and inside the reg with magnification, looking for anything irregular. Nothing found. Everything looked good.
  • replaced all o-rings
  • deburred and polished the washers (used 3M Zona 80-4 micron cloths for all polishing)
  • polished the piston
  • wiped everything clean
  • lightly lubed o-rings
  • Reassembled, keeping the washer stack the same: 3 stacks of 4 (())(())(())

I backed the screw out 2.25 turns since I knew this should bring me to around 190 bar based on how the reg performed in the past.
Filled tank to 220 bar. Now the 1st reg wouldn’t fill past 110 bar. Backed the reg screw out to 2.5 turns. Still wouldn’t fill past 110 bar. So now things are worse.

I contacted Utah Air, where I purchased the gun. They said it sounded like a bad reg so they sent me a replacement.

I installed the new reg and it wouldn’t fill past 130 bar. At 2 turns out on the reg screw, 2.25, and 2.5, it still read 130 bar. 2nd reg gauge also read 130 bar. I removed the reg and repeated the above reg inspecting and polishing process. Found no visible issues, and the cleaning/rebuilding resulted in no change.

I ordered a brass piston from FX. Installed the brass piston in the original reg. The reg wouldn’t fill past 90 bar. Installed the brass piston in the replacement reg. It wouldn’t fill past 5 bar. Very confused.

Thinking maybe I received 2 defective FX regs, I ordered a Huma 1st reg. It works perfectly. When I fill the gun the 1st reg gauge goes to the set pressure 3x fasted than the FX reg did when it was sort of working. After a shot it recovers about 3x faster. The needle goes right to the set pressure and stays there. No creeping up or down in pressure like the FX reg would.

I’m glad that the Huma is working, but I’m still curious what could be going wrong with the two FX regs.

Any ideas what could be causing the specific symptoms described above?

Unexpected visitor

An interesting day today. A honeybee in the front room ) carefully caught and released outside. A hornet in the dining room (dispatched without fear of recrimination) and this beautiful idiot in the utility room sitting on a shelf and staring at the fridge. I am clueless as to how it got in. Oh well, dove pie for dinner (not).
