Brocock/BRK  First Things First OR Keeping the Cart Behind the Horse

I have a BRK Ghost Plus (Blaze) .22 incoming in the next couple of days from AoA. This will be the most I've paid for an airgun.. ..ever. I have owned several that were close to that price point and have a high regard for all things Daystate/BRK so I expect a very high quality experience. Several have indicated I will.

I've never asked this question before, so here goes.... my purpose by the way is hunting tree squirrels, mostly grey here in KY. Oh, if a squirrel notices the blaze color I will flap my hand and bark hoping the beast will think me a squirrel,

What should I do before shooting the air rifle?

  • I know with rimfires I clean the barrel and bolt to make sure no gunk build up.
  • Once I begin shooting I'll sight in scope. The scope will likely be a Nikon Pro with AO (out of production - I have 3).
  • Then I'll try 2-3 different pellets that I have on hand; JSB and Hades to see if one groups better than another. I'll do this first at 25. yards and then 50.

Should I be watching reg pressure and bottle pressure? I will check both before shooting and I'll top off with my GX 3-i compressor if necessary.

I'm hoping to shoot it without a moderator but I have a DFL RYU that I'll sill try out (.25) to see if it makes a difference.

If I have indicated any thing that is ill-advised or that I should also do, I'd appreciate the input.

Thanks

The Undertaker

OMgosh this AirMarksman rail is simply superb. Fits on the FX Panthera / Dynamic. The fit and finish is exquisite, the tolerances are super tight, and the connections are rock frickin‘ solid.

Previously I used the K&L PR5, but this Undertaker takes everything to the next level including and Arca rail that extends under the trigger guard (for tripod use) and the internal slots for weights / balancing.

I’m uber stoked on this accessory! Just not sure if the rattle can splatter paint compliments it or not. What do you think? Should I remove it?

PCP Rifle  SOLD BRK Atomic Barn/Mouse Special

I am still not sure if i want to let it go but I have my BRK Atomic .177 that is my incognito with the right moderator 35Y and under pester. I have mine set for 12FPE on high 10FPE on medium, and 8FPE on low. It is my mouse gun and to be honest it probably has the most kills since it's small, accurate, and quiet gets around 3 mags on a fill so around 40 shots. 1 original mag and 1 carm mag also has the upgraded top picatinny rail and side accessory rails as well as the hogue grip. Custom tune and trigger job from Derrick Wall. It has some wear on the under rail mount and it was a tripod shooter. I am open to trades not looking for anything specific so let me know what you have worst I can say is no thank you. $1050TYD

Altaros Booster Project and Mods

I picked up an altaros booster (B2B edition) with the intent of running it into a regulator and shooting at 300bar or more. A bottle only lasts a few shots at those pressures... even my big 12L bottle isn't enough. It eventually worked out but it took a handful of modifications to the booster.

I found out pretty quickly that it was not intended to do what I wanted. The pump is controlled by a 5 port valve that toggles the pump back and forth. If there is air and electricity supplied, the valve will continue to toggle until it is disabled by the pressure switch. The problem is that the pump doesn't stop operating at the moment the switch activates... instead it will finish the final stroke of the pump and then stop. This causes the burst disk to blow if you hook up a regulator on the output. Of course it works fine if you use it as intended, by pumping from one bottle to another, but the a regulator will stop the flow in it's tracks even if the pump still has more to go before it stops.

I solved this by shutting down the driving air supply at the moment the set pressure is reached. This required an additional valve, a 3 port. First I tried a small 1/8 valve but the flow was too little and the pump wouldn't operate, hence the bulky 1/4" valve.

20241007_204408.jpg

The original pressure switch also posed a problem. The hysterisis (difference between set and reset point) was huge, around 75bar. In order to operate my reg at 300bar I would have had 75 bar pressure swings on the input to the reg, from 325 to 400 bar. Too much... and the original switch didn't even go that high... so I shopped around and found a nice switch at automation direct. With independently adjustable set and reset points, and can operate at 12v it was perfect.

20241007_204453.jpg

I wired this all up and used a power splitter to supply all of the electrnics from the usb-to-12v adapter cable. Fortunately the cable puts out just enough current to run all of the components from a usb power bank.

I made one more minor mod. It originally came with a piece of silicone tubing after the internal regulator (for dropping 300bar down to 120psi for operation of the pump). The tubing was there to burst like a fuse if the regulator were to fail. This tube had a very small bore causing a restriction, so I replaced it with a larger tube and installed an actual pressure relief valve.

This took about a month to put together... between shopping for different items, buying items with the wrong threads, finding unusual components etc. In the end it works flawlessly, and it's portable. I've got a small duffel bag on the way for easy transport to the range.

Side note.... fittings for this stuff is a major PAIN. China uses metric threads, everyone uses BSPT and BSPP sometimes, and the US uses NPT. Some use a face seal, some use a sealing washer, some use thread sealant, and nothing ever matches the fittings you have on hand. Major pain. Even best fittings only occasionally has what I need. In the end I got it all together but it took a few orders and 2 returns on amazon for mislabeled threads!

Will post a video next time I fire it up.

Ballistic solvers, for those that use them.

Not sure when or even if I'll make my new ballistic solver public, as most people already have their preference, but wanted to show off the work I put in this last week developing one that uses G1, GA, GA2, RA4, SLG0, SLG1, WC0, G7, and some other drag references, while also receiving input on what could or should be added if its not present already. Its a common 3DOF(+) ballistic solver using Euler's method to calculate drag. Nothing too fancy, was/is mostly a challenge to myself and to help myself understand some of the dynamics going on externally with projectiles during flight, all this and I have barely scratched the surface. The math involved for advanced ballistics is...certainly beyond me...but hey, don't let that set you back, I certainly didn't let it to me.

Below are a few screenshots, left side shows no effects added, while the right side shows all effects added, Spin drift, Magnus effect, Earth based effects which include Coriolis and Eotvos effect, and even the wind being included in zero, a feature I figured would hurt to add that I don't see currently in ballistic solvers. These effects are near meaningless under 200 yards, but really present themselves, more-so with airguns, once pushed beyond.

No added effects vs added effects

1728345030082.png
1728345046936.png

Spin drift, Earth based and Magnus effects=.09 / .32 mil at 150 yards = .5" and 1.75" difference, while not a lot, it grows rather quickly as you increase range, which airgunners are frequently doing as technology evolves. .08 of the .32 was the wind being zeroed, still 1.3" with that effect taken out.

The other cool feature is visually showing the vertical stringing. The FPS variance above is 50, and you can see on the reticle, horizontal lines that show where your high and low shots could wander to assuming your fps input used is in the middle. At 50 fps spread you could see upwards of 7" of vertical stringing in the above setup. 50 fps spread was used to show the extreme, as no one in their right mind will shoot 150 yards with a gun that has 50 fps spread, at least not out of enjoyment.

VS 20 fps spread which is calculated to cause roughly 2.6" vertical stringing. (Not shown, 5 fps is .6" vertical spread, at this distance with this setup, and 10 fps is 1.3")

1728343380532.png
1728343391789.png

Another neat feature is automatically updating weather that effects your shot. Each component from Temp, humidity, wind speed and wind direction can be set to auto or inputted manually. Its wild to see the effects here in Colorado as the temperature goes from 40F in the morning to 90F in the afternoon. Quite the shift in POA required.

Here is 40F vs 90F:

1728344164497.png
1728344306898.png

.52 mil + .23 mil which is quite a shift, and that assumes your gun isn't shooting at a greatly reduced fps in the cold, which it likely is, which would add even more drop.

If you have ideas / features that should be included, feel free to chime in! Happy shooting.

-Matt

First Successful Squirrel Hunt Of 2024 On Public Lands

I had a great time going out on public lands to go squirrel hunting! This was my 3rd or 4th time going out but my first time being successful this year. The success rate is completely connect to the acorn yield, so what may have been a hot spot a few years ago, can dry up completely the next year or so.

20240902_093806.jpg

After walking about a mile, I came across some deer scat amongst some acorns, which was a good sign that there was food that squirrels would take a liking to. 20 minutes after my first still, I decided to press forward some 50 yards for another still and I saw some movement. My camo did a great job, as he had not a clue I was there even at 26 yards!

Umarex  Cheek riser for notos?

Anyone put a cheek riser on the stock notos? Is there any cheek raiser that will fit on the stock notos? Didn't want to purchase a new magpul stock and cheek rise. Was wondering if I can just purchase an cheek riser and use on the stock notos. Let me know if the one of the magpul will fit or any out there will fit on stock notos.

Air Venturi  Avenger went auto..?

Hey guys

I have a modded normal Avenger. 22 that just made "full auto" noises like when a paintball gun or CO2 airgun are on last bits of air... went brrrrrrr like shot real fast back to back to back and watched the needles drop then rise again when it was done.

It has a light valve poppet spring and some other stuff done to it but it has stock hammer spring set at 4 turns I think.

Any idea what could cause this on a side lever gun? It did it twice in a magazine but not back to back.

Need new poppet or something? I didn't mess with hammer spring or regulator but did recently have to degas to replace an O ring on the plug for the bottle conversion. No idea why that would matter but just giving more info.

Thanks in advance!
