Question about Open Division rules

Hey Guys,

Right now I exclusively shoot HFT, but am considering trying my hand at Open Division. I have a question about rules as I experiment with different equipment and positions. In non-forced position lanes is it legal to place a small bag-rest on the forward knee or thigh to support the forend of the gun?

My read of the AAFTA rules is that it isn't legal. The Common Division Rules state, "Other than using aids permitted by specific AAFTA Division Rules (slings, bipods, etc.), the gun must be supported solely by the shooter's hands and body." I don't see anything in the Open Division Rules that specifically allow it. However, I've seen multiple Open Division shooters with thick pads (not knee pads) strapped to their knee or thigh, to rest their gun on. Am I misunderstanding the rules?

FX Airguns Panthera Featuring NEW Element Optics Helix HD Scope: Is the Hype Real?

The FX Panthera Dynamic Block and Shroud Plenum: A Look Inside (and into the future)! The UpNorth Airgunner YouTube channel is going to surpass 30,000 subscriber this month and I can not thank you all enough for following me for the last 5 years on my EPIC airgunners journey and experiences. So as a thank you, at the end of the month of January, I will be doing a random drawing from my subscribers to GIVE AWAY an Element Optics scope. So make sure to Subscribe to UpNorthAirGunner!

This was the video I wanted to publish a few weeks ago when the FX Panthera was first announced, but with over 2 feet of snow here in Northern Michigan and my shooting range inaccessible, I decided to use this down time to dig into what makes this new platform from FX Airguns a revolutionary innovation in our sport. The weather finally broke a bit to do some initial tuning and testing at 50 and 100 yards. Doing this testing in sub freezing temperatures has challenges, but I wanted to get out there and share with you all the new gear I am testing and how the process of tuning a FX Panthera might be slightly different than other PCP airguns. But is the hype real? From what I have experienced so far with this platform.... 100% YES! Go watch Josh’s video from Pursuit of Accuracy on YouTube and the level of precision is already proven over group after group after group.

What I wanted to show in this video is the process of that pursuit of accuracy and precision specifically with the FX Panthera and the tuning differences I have found with the short burst valve and the shroud based plenum system. But…. What excites me the most is the DYNAMIC possibilities in this new FX block design! Thus the name. I’ve gotten a lot of questions that I wanted to go over about the new platform. First off…. Yes a DonnyFL FX Suppressor looks perfect with the new outer diameter of the shroud. The end part of the shroud is removable and when you look inside towards the muzzle you’ll find an air stripping device similar to what we have in the FX Impact. With the over-the-barrel shroud plenum removed looking into the Dynamic Block you can see the valve area and how the air flow pathway has been perfected adding to the insane level of efficiency and power potential the industry is always chasing.

Moving back to the block with the baracade stand off removed reveals a brass port on the Dynamic Block. Hein mentioned this briefly in the FX video published last week. That plugged port opens up possibilities to even MORE onboard air! But wait, there’s even MORE onboard air potential. In that FX video Hein mentions an adapter for a REAR buttstock bottle too! Looking at how the PRS rear buttstock attaches, you can envision how the modularity and GENIUS of FX reveals itself.

So this is just a first look into the guts of the transformative Airgun platform FX just unleashed. My mind is already spinning with all the future options, but what I have in my hand is a PERFECT example of FX’s approach to purpose built designs. With that said, “purpose built” is usually a fancy way of saying something has designed itself into a single purpose use. The FX Dynamic Block is quite the opposite. I’d even venture to say it’s the most MODULAR approach to an Airgun design I’ve ever seen.

We are witnessing the golden age of innovation and FX is leading that charge. It’s a GREAT time to be an airgunner!

Image stolen from @yenniedn (whom I trade the rifle from) so scope not included.

Message me for more pics or questions.

Would consider trades for Evol, or maybe Leshiy 2 (odd i know, as being as that’s what I traded it for. Lol). Or something else compact and rugged.

SHIPPING COST OUT OF CONTROL

I was just on AoA website to order a Labradar airgun microphone. $44.95 on sale. Add $3.85 for tax AND ADD $25.86 UPS SHIPPING.
NO F’ing WAY. The entire package would not hit one pound and would fit in 4”x4”x4” box.
This is completely stupid. Ordered it from Midway, $8.50 shipping.

Edit: Shipping on a rifle would be several hundred dollars.

Ticked another one off the bucket list

.177 Ranchero. I missed buying this one twice. Third time is the charm. I saw several 22's come up, and could have bought a new synthetic one, but wanted Walnut. This appears to be a very old model, and it has a fair amount of dings on it. But it has been very well tuned. This is now the quietest gun I own with a moderator. I have another .177 pcp pistol with less power, and this is easily 5x quieter. The gun was just serviced by FX. It's a little larger than I immagined, but not by much. The trigger is better than my fx Crown. The best of any gun I own. And what I'm happiest about is that it has a very light hammer. The gun is not disturbed at all during the shot cycle by hammer mass or valve impact. It came with an air tube extension, and extended muzzle brake which I removed for now. I'll have the receiver refinished at some point. And I will refinish, and re-work the stock to better fit me. I'm also likely going to give making a carbine stock for it a go. Overall, a really supurb pistol, and exceedingly accurate.

Air Venturi Avenger price question

Hello everyone!

Happy new year first of all!!!
I had made a few posts about spring powered air rifles a while ago. Eventually, due to budget constraints (rent and other university related dues) I bought a XISICO/BAM/BMK XS/BAM 19 in .22. A friend who has been working on these guns for quite some time tuned it for me and I'm really happy with it!! Especially for the price point! (about 100€). Since I already have two springers (this and an x-blade), I thought that it would be nice to save up in order to get a pcp next...

So, the air venturi avenger is a really nice rifle (I'm being captain obvious here) with a really affordable price point. Thing is, here in Greece, it's pricier compared to what it is in the USA.

More specifically, the U.S price for the version with the wooden stock (that's the one that I really like) is about 430$ (429.99$ on pyramid air).
In Greece, the very same gun costs 649.00€ (which is about 696.99$).

I'm not trying to bash the rifle in any way. I know that it is a great gun because of it's performance and tunability (very few people have something negative to say about it which is an added bonus imho). However, the question is, is it worth it the 649 euros? Or should I look elsewhere for a pcp air rifle that won't break the bank?

Online purchased the only option?

I’m in Southern California and new to airguns. I was interested in a few guns, but there are no shops nearby that I can check them out. For those that don’t have shops near them, do you just pick one, order it and hope you like it? I can read and watch reviews all day, but as we know there are biased opinions on everything

HW95 converted to 22

I love my HW95 and wanted to share some of my experience. I struggled with accuracy and barrel droop on my 2021 Luxus in 177 caliber. A member here pointed me to the Holy Barrel Droop thread at GTA. There I learned about the cocking arm issue and Ron / Bayman / MyCapt helped me sort that out. He also coached me through a Vortek PG4 kit install. A slight bend in the cocking arm corrected the barrel droop problems as I could not zero the scope without shims. Relieving the cocking arm pressure also provided a consistent lockup, fixing accuracy issues. My kit install improved spring buzz a lot. I don't remember my velocity or cocking effort changing much. After a few days I had to open it back up and add a little more lube to the kit's steel guide to fix cocking noise. Fast forward 1 year, I've had great service and fun but my (2) HW30's get a lot more attention. I shoot almost every day.

I've always wanted a 22 caliber pellet rifle so I started shopping around. Financially it would have been smarter to just buy a 22 but a conversion barrel sounded fun and it was. I think it cost $120 from AOA plus shipping. I also got a new cocking arm and a new pin to facilitate an easier install and an easier swap back if desired. I got 2 pins as I thought about experimenting with a quick-change method. I also ordered 2 bearing washers / shims while I was there. I think I spent almost $200. The barrel came complete with breech block and breech seal.

I asked Shane the service / parts guy to look for a cocking arm with a slight bend but they all were straight. I bent my new cocking arm on my fab table with a heavy clamp and oak blocks. Same method I used before except the fresh sharp edges of the oak blocks worked way better than 2X4 pine. The local bearing shop gave me a scrap sealed bearing that I cut open to get some nice steel balls. Following a tip from "nced" I greased the BB's for adhesion but I used my clamp vs a vice for flaring the cross pin. Still experimenting / learning I decided to cock the rifle before removing the barrel so not to fight preload tension. Not a recommended practice but I would do it again. It only took a few minutes to swap the barrel without removing the trigger and housing and spring components.

I started with Crosman Premier HP hoping to save money and enjoy their accuracy (often seen in 177) plus easy to get in town. I thought if I dedicated the new 22 barrel to the harder antimony-rich CPHP I'd be good. Not so in my case. I got a few good shots quick then missed by >1". I tried several groups but no change. Then I tried Crosman Premier Domed. These look very soft and not shiny at all. Worse groups now. Scrapped that idea and cleaned the barrel. Got some H&N Field Target Trophy 14.66 and made some 1-hole groups at 25 yards and shot some cans at 50 yards. I tried some Baracuda 15's but I'm sticking with the FTT.

The shot cycle is fantastic on mild, smooth and quite scales. Better than I imagined. I don't mind the bullet drop at my ranges. The Hawke Airmax reticle is nice for that. I got to shooting it so much that I started worrying about a bit of metal on metal gaul that I saw in the receiver a year ago. I tore down the gun using my new Harbor Freight sash clamp that worked great for a spring compressor. I found no gaul so I either imagined it or it was the wear on the Vortek metal outer guide. I left out the metal guide and 2 thick spacer washers. Now it is finally easy to cock and the shot cycle is even better.

Modifying an Uragan 2 for PRS Shooting

BD80755D-DA44-4166-9332-D91CCBFAC5F0.jpeg

I think this little endeavor of mine might just work! Got a new Uragan 2 a little while back in my quest for putting together a new NRL22 rifle, ever since they had changed the rules on ammo and calibers for the airgun class. I always wanted to use .30cal slugs for NRL, so I got a U2 in .30 with a 700mm barrel to test out.

Longer version short, I haven't really had much free time to focus on doing anything crazy, but I have a pretty good size range in my backyard now. Little by little, I started learning this rifle and began testing and tuning it until I ended up with just the right adjustments to get it spitting fire. The CZ barrel is chambered very shallow and I figured out that manipulating the probe position foreward/aft allowed me to achieve the right projectile seating deprh for almost any slug that I wanted to shoot.

In the end, I found this rifle to be MOST accurate with (2) slugs - the FX Hybrids (most accurate between 1015-1030) and my absolute favorite of all, the original 62gr Varmint Knockers (970). The RA4 BC of the 62's with this 15.7"/400mm twist CZ is 0.148, so they will definitely work well in NRL matches

Shortcomings and challenges of the U2 for PRS competion - Right away, there were things that I strongly disliked about the rifle. All of which were independently deal breakers in my mind, unless I was able to find a solution for each of them:

1) Safety (fixed) - The safety engaged way too easily and was a PITA to disengage. I fixed this by tightening down the screws on both sides of the safety switch so it can't move freely.

2) Shallow magazine depth (fixed) - The mags are not deep enough to seat anything longer than 54.5gr NSAs, so I had to mill them out and now they will seat anything at or under 66gr

E41E054B-5C63-412A-8F80-29DDC4A81227.jpeg

3) Barrel harmonics & rigidity (work in progress) - Harmonics can definitely affect the precision with heavier ammo at high power in this rifle. Tensioning with the shroud alone only gets it so far

One of the great design elements of the U2 is it's (8) flat-face set screws that attach the barrel from one end of the action to the other. The barrel and housing also have a near press for tolerance so there's ZERO slop!!! This is second only to a threaded barrel action in my book, but this design leaves the other 1/2 of the barrel vulnerable!

I have a domestic carbon fiber vendor who made a custom mandrel to my specs and I ordered some prototype tubes to test out. The diameter tolerances and fit are PERFECT for the U2 barrels!!!

BD116D39-575A-46C7-AA1C-D1E6773B73A6.jpeg

I'm currently running a non-permanent setup with a tube over the barrel inside of the factory shroud that is tensioned against a polymer bushing. There's a couple of semi-related mods that I'm contemplating that I need to figure out before I implement a permanent setup.

4) Bipod rail SUCKS (fixed) - For the love of God, WHY do these airgun manufacturers design these things with the bipod rail damn near under the trigger?!?! The U2 has a sleek 40mm OD bottle (which was one of the big reasons why I chose it).Except the 530cc bottle is LONG! It was VERY awkward and unstable to shoot off of a bipod, even with a Pic rail attached via keymod to the handguard (the keymod implementation on this handguard is also frustrating and the guard tends to smack into the bottle when the rifle is planted with a bipod.

So I decided that I wanted a low profile Arca rail to run the full length of the bottle and that I would ditch the handguard (it's currently on one of my classic Leshiys). I repurposed some accessories and modified them to work together in forming the rail. The fit is EXACTLY what I had in mind! It's as low profile as one could get with an Arca Swiss rail on this rifle.

I have one more sub-project in the works for this rail that will add bottle mounted support. Devised a clever design for the attachment system that I have NOT seen anyone else do yet, and if it works I'm going to file for a patent as it can be applied to any other bottle rifle (awaiting parts, materials, and new end mills to finish the prototype proof of concept).

For the time being, this single velcro retaining strap has proven to be more than sufficient to stabilize the fore end for field use with a bipod attached.

Semi worthless thread about Taipan accuracy issues.

So I bought a Taipan Long in .22

It shot pretty damn well honestly, but seemed to be somewhat finicky with a flier pretty regularly. And being overly critical, I thought it could do better. As I like to do with any new gun I pulled the barrel to give her a good look over and push a pellet through to feel it out. The last couple CZ barrels I've dealt with had really tight chokes, but were otherwise very nice. That's exactly what I felt with this one, except I noticed the pellet didn't slip right out of the muzzle. More like it hung up and then "popped" out. I've seen this before in barrels that I cut a crown on myself, and the bit didn't cut just right and left a smeared cut/burr.

In my prior experiences with hacking around with different barrels, I knew this was a red flag.

So I turned a pilot to indicate the bore and get the barrel running true in the lathe. I faced off around .100" from the muzzle, and cut a new crown and gave it a quick deburr with some 600 grit lapping compound on a big Qtip.

Then I flipped the barrel around, and added a slightly shallower radius to the leade/breech/entry/whatever, just to ease loading.

Turned out okay I guess considering the equipment:

Crown:
taipan crown2.jpgtaipan crown.jpg

Leade/Inlet/Entrada:

And here's why this thread is mostly useless.......I didn't take any pics of the barrel or groups beforehand. Facepalm.

BUT!

I did take a pic of a pushed pellet before and after the hackjob. So there's that.

Left is before, right is after.

And here's the result in the groups. Barrel was dirty/seasoned and just had the chips blasted out with air and a cotton swab fired through with shop air. Rested the forearm on a cooler, sitting on my butt at 25 yards. 5 shot group:

With a good solid rest, and a cleaned barrel, I think we might have something here! :)

Sitting on the couch bored, thought I'd post this rambling in case you were bored too.

NLA WTS 4500psi SCBA 30 Minute Air Tank & Valve with Fill Hose Assembly

This is a ISI Carleton 30 minute SCBA tank and a Orcair fill valve assembly. The tank was made in 2007 and its last hydro was done in 2019. It is surplus from a local fire department, but in good condition. The valve is brand new, but I have been using this brand for a few years now and have had very good luck with them. It's unregulated and has two gauges, pressure release and a Foster fill port. I use the same setup and fill mine with a Yong Heng compressor.

Local pickup in Milford, Michigan or I can ship to the lower 48. (No P.O Boxes)

If picking up in person the tank will be filled to 4100psi, but if shipping I will need to empty it.

Asking $150 picked up in person or $180 shipped.
