My First Attempt at Calculating FPS/FPE

The Avenger is new to me and my first PCP. I wanted a chronograph and they are not free. During a search I found someone who checked out the inexpensive VIKKA at $33.
As far as accuracy? I believe I'm in the ballpark but really what I have is a baseline. Someone online compared two stings, one from this unit and one from a higher end with similar results.

I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DRJ3JW7?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

And set everything up today. Took 21 shots for no particular reason. You can see my results below for the Avenger and another for the HW97k. Both in .22
The unit can be set in fps, mps, and joules (with input). I just chose to record the mps and build an excel sheet to save.

HW30 Galling

I know it's a known issue and I knew I'd get around to fixing it one day. I wish I'd have fixed it sooner. It's exactly one year old this week and has about 2K rounds through it. Mine is really more like a gouge, removing metal in stead of piling it up. I put moly paste on it twice in the last year. I didn't try to smooth the gouges because I'm not ready to re-blue that area. I did polish / sand the joint of the cocking arm at the pivot, which is the culprit. I also lightly polished the cocking arm just behind the shoe / end. There was a surprising amount of wear on the receiver where the cocking shoe follows the piston. I only lightly cleaned up the arm there because the wear was so even and mild except at the very end of the slot when closed. It was pretty deep there but I didn't want to relieve the arm and allow it tolerance to reach the spring. The short linkage was nicely / loosely fitted in the breech block. The long linkage was very tight where it connects to the short linkage, too tight. I oiled it with Kroil and worked it a lot. I want to loosen it with tools but I need to learn what's ideal first before I make any more changes.

N/A  100 or less...

Here are some of my rarest FACTORY PRODUCED PISTON rifles NO CUSTOM MADE, NO PCP's! All have a total production of 100 specimens or less. Some much, much less.

Right on the border of the 100 number is the Theoben Dual Magnum. Reported as “approximately 104” produced. I believe this may be the actual combined number for both Theoben & Beeman marked Dual Magnums. This may not be correct but being so close to 100 and the word “approximate” used in the Blue Book description I included it.
253 Theoben Dual Magnum.JPG

No information about the Beeman marked Dual Magnums in the Blue Book nor anywhere else that I can find so I apply most of the same rationale as above. Overall, I feel there may be even fewer Beeman marked examples, but I cannot prove this.
178 Beeman Dual Magnum.JPG

Beeman FWB 124D with Jnc marking- at one point the Blue Book had these listed as "less than 25" but this seems to have been disproven and removed. It does seem that less than 100 should be plausible.
208 Beeman Feinwerkbau 124D Jnc.JPG

Beeman RX 1 20 Year Anniversary edition- As few as 25 specimens were produced.
142 Beeman RX1 Commemorative.JPG

Beeman R1 20 Year Anniversary edition- Blue Books states 50 were produced.
121 Beeman R1 20 year Commemorative.JPG

Beeman P1 20 year commemorative .20, just 50 were produced. This one is from the R Beeman collection
33 P1 20 year.JPG
33 P1 20yr.JPG

RWS RA-800- Very hard to find good information on this one but production seems to be 25 to perhaps 40 from what I could find (.22)
234 RWS RA-800.JPG

RWS RA-800- .177 (same info as above)
280 RA800 .177.JPG

Beeman HW55 Tyrolean- just 25 produced, this one has a heavy factory option barrel sleeve.
156 Beeman HW55.JPG

Beeman R1 Tyrolean- less than 25 produced. (.177) with model 68R Blue Ribbon scope (4-12x40)

Beeman R1 Tyrolean- less than 25 produced. (.20) with model 68R Blue Ribbon scope (4-12x40)
119 Beeman R1 Tyrolean .20.JPG

Beeman HW97 Tyrolean- Blue Book states these were never produced but here is mine. I had a conversation some years ago with David Slade, he said he personally saw a handful of these come into the Beeman shop. He then reiterated “a handful”! 25 or less seems to be a very reasonable estimate.
165 Beeman HW97 Tyrolean .177.JPG

Beeman HW35 TH- According to R Beeman only a handful of HW35’s were ever produced with a factory thumbhole stock. This seems to be another candidate for 25 or less.
145 Beeman HW35 Lochschaft.JPG

Beeman FWB 127 with Jnc marking- These seems to be exceedingly rare. A Beeman article mentioned that the 127’s production is about 5% of that of the 124’s. Less than 25 produced seems to be a very safe estimate on this one as well. I personally have only seen or heard of 1 or 2 others.
214 FWB 127D Jnc.JPG

Air Arms Pro Elite .177 walnut- Total production of all PE’s (.22 & .177) was just over 1400, less than 530 were .177 Total production of all walnut stocks was just 57. An estimate of .177’s with walnut stock could be ~20 or less.
181 AA Pro Elite .177 Walnut.JPG

Air Arms Pro Elite .177 walnut- (same info as above)

Beeman HW35 RDB 1 chrome- “Less than 20 factory chrome plated versions of any HW/Beeman guns exist. The very rarest versions are the ones that are factory stamped with Robert Beeman’s initials”. I believe a good estimate on this one might be +-5 specimens?
147 Beeman HW35 chrome RDB 1.JPG

Beeman Classic Magnum- another Theoben made product, this one is .20 cal. Very limited information on this one other than they were only produced for one year (1992) and came in .20 & .25 cal. only and have walnut stocks.

Beeman RX1 with Luxury stock (really not positive about this one TBH but production seems to be quite low)

Anyone Ever Blown a Shot at a FT Competition When….?

This just crossed my mind at random. I’ve never competed, but I can imagine myself being this guy.

Any FT/HFT competitors ever been up to shoot, got their scope dialed in ranged, and the real animal (that your target is shaped like) pops up in your sights? If so, which one of y’all shot the animal instead of the kill zone on the target?

I could totally see myself doing this in my state. To hell with the card, I’m bagging the squirrel. If you’ve done this, let’s hear about it.

Vacuum pumping CF bottles

Hello,

How often do you vacuum pump your CF bottles to remove stale air and any unwanted residues and moisture?

I vacuum pump my CF bottle every two and a half months or every 7 and 3/4 fills to ensure the bottle is free of contaminates.

I have noticed that since doing so the accuracy has substantially improved across all shot counts. I use the air intake on my Yong Heng explictly for this purpose and have removed the brass sintered “muffler” and have installed a foster fitting allowing me to void the air tank directly into the Yong Heng once the tank is at atmospheric pressure of 1 bar.

Thank you in advance for any additional guidance on this very important and commonly neglected task.

New Wolverine

Just got a new Wolverine Forrester standard in.177 hoping to maybe try a little hunter field target this year. Talk about smooth side lever action and great trigger! After running a few magazines it was time to see how it came set up from the factory. Pretty happy with the extreme spread on 80 shots with FX 13.4’s.

Gingerbread man at 102 yards con mi Atomic XR…

My wife gave me some old Christmas cookies to put out for the critters, and I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to shoot this little guy… 39 degrees, wind at 3 mph from my rear right. Sending CPHPs. Hit the can on end twice, but not solid enough to penetrate, the cookie and then the little can. 10 MILs of holdover and 1-1.5 MILs of hold off. Gentlemen, please understand that I’m just doing it for the fun of it. The bulk of my shooting is sub 50 yards. Many misses occurred before those hits. I can hold over easy enough, but the varying wind at that distance? Not so much. Just the same just having fun. Got a great laugh out of center punching that dangerous gingerbread man.

Maxtrouble: It is ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE that you contact me.

@maxtrouble, your recent post alerting the community of a Whiscombe for sale on AOA’s website was the conditio sine qua non (a Latin legal term for "[a condition] without which it could not be", "but for...", or "without which [there is] nothing." - THE essential action/condition) for what just happened. A few minutes ago I finished unboxing a for all intensive purposes NOS Whiscombe JW80 MK2 in a beautiful English walnut thumbhole FT stock.

PM me with your cell phone #, I would really like to talk to you and send you something to show my gratitude and appreciation. You are obviously a top notch airgunner, always alerting the community to deals/sales, and positive contributions in general. PM me, please.

Springer cold bore?

So, what causes a cold bore pattern with a springer? The top bull is shot 1. Bull 2 shot 4 is the lower left. Shots 3 to 5 are back to user error. It typically is the once a day if the rifle sits 20 hours or more. It is easy enough to deal with. 5 shots to start off and the I am good to go. I am just curious.

In this case the rifle and pellets (weight sorted and wax lubed) have been a few days in a 35°F to 45°F environment. The shooting is in a 65°F indoor environment. The same happens not matter the temp though. Outdoors with everything warm in the summer same thing.

It has always shot this way. I am shooting a TX200 MIII using AA Field Heavy 10.3. I have tried cleaning. Last time I removed all internals and clean relubed and assembled it back down to the compression chamber.

We Don't Need No Stinkin' Scratches!

This is a bit of a vent, so please excuse the emotion. But do most folks here generally get as irrationally upset as I when you accidently put a scuff, scratch, dent, or ding into your beloved air gun through normal course of use? Its innocent enough, but man it gets my goat when I notice a new bit of "character" that I've bestowed onto one of my guns.

This stems most recently from my toying around with the front sight on my Diana 48. I slid down the sight to the bottom of the ramp as the rifle was shooting high. Once moved back to the original position I noticed a lovely little set screw ring that I marred into the ramp. On the new rifles this ramp is plastic and doesn't show as visibly, but I have the older pot metal ramp and that mark shines up like the North Star every time I look at it.

These are garden party problems to be sure. But I'm curious if the masses feel the same when an oopsie occurs? Or maybe the more seasoned can enlighten us with a little Zen and teach us how to grant ourselves the serenity to accept the things we cannot control.

Disclosure in advertising

It's not news to any of us that we live in a world where we're constantly being advertised to. Free-market capitalism dictates that companies try to get us to spend our money on what they're selling. Simple as that.

In the past, "ads" were very obviously advertisements. There were formats where commercials were just the given, the expected even. A 30 second "spot" during a "commercial break." The website of a manufacturer or retailer. The radio. A magazine. Even blatant product placement in movies where the camera lingers just a bit longer than necessary on that can of Coca Cola or Chevrolet emblem. All of those are examples of where it is just the norm to see, and even expect, advertisements.

BUT, in the last decade or so, we've seen the rise of "influencers." And our little airgun hobby has not been spared from this effect. These are individuals paid (in one way or another) to promote products. They flood YouTube and Instagram and TikTok and even industry-specific forums like Airgun Nation. They post "content," sharing information about the products that have been placed in their hands by....those companies that decades ago would have marketed their products in all the usual places. These seemingly real-world users are the ultimate "product placements." Payment for this promotion of products takes on myriad forms. Some are literally on the payroll, drawing regular pay checks. Others are paid by how many "views" the "content" garners or how many sales can be traced back to their influence. Some are given the products that they promote. Some are paid in transportation fees. Rarely do we see disclosures of how the influencer is being compensated. And, the worst is when the influencer plays the part of the average joe, leaving those susceptible to believe they're just enjoying freely given information.

As a collective groups of airgun-addicted individuals, do we care to know the back-story behind the information being "shared" with us? If what we're reading is an advertisement to influence our decision-making (read wallets) should we be informed? Should we be made aware if someone is receiving compensation (of any form) for what they're sharing?

A full disclosure bolsters the validity of what is being shared, in a "I've got nothing to hide" fashion. Furthermore, disclosure can help the reader to know that what they're reading is coming from someone with direct ties to the manufacturer, which in many cases gives the reader confidence that what they're consuming is factual information.

Finally, disclosure of a potential conflict of interest does not make it an actual conflict, but it definitely helps eliminate the perception of malfeasance.

Impact M3 bottle suddenly very hard to screw/unscrew after routine air emptying to lower 2nd reg

I've had an Impact M3 that has been working without issue for the past 6 months. But today something went wrong. I bled the system of air as I normally do whenever I want to decrease the reg pressure: unscrew the bottle, then slightly turn the 2nd reg adjuster counter clockwise until the air begins to empty. When the system was empty, I turned the 2nd reg screw clockwise to lower the pressure.

But then, when I screwed the bottle on, as soon as the seal engaged and the gun filled with air the bottle instantly became too tight to screw/unscrew. If I put on a pair of really grippy work gloves, use two hands, and twist as hard as i can, then I can get it to turn in either direction, but I don't want to do anything until I know what might be going on. I'm guessing something happened with an o-ring in the bottle valve or regulator, allowing some air to pass through, so I'm fighting a lot of pressure to screw/unscrew

Any ideas what could be causing this? And what to do from here?

Thanks guys.
