22 caliber - the most popular?

It is claimed that the 22 caliber is THE most popular caliber in airgun use today. There is plenty of reason to believe that. The weight range of 22 cal pellets is impressive. Cost per pellet is also substantially beneficial versus their larger caliber counterparts. The recent increase in power of the guns has expanded the versatility of this caliber with slugs and monster redesigns. Both in target and hunting. Their economical nature versus the 25 caliber also elevates their standing with both pellets and slugs. I prefer 25 caliber, but 22 caliber has made big advances and I'm gaining new respect for them.

Double Tap with Huben

I really need a camera for this , I double taped a sparrow with 22 JTS pellet , This is the second time I have done this and its pretty hard to pull off , You have to be very smooth pulling trigger twice very fast , But you know you double tapped with the explosion of feathers and nothing left of the sparrow , Took about 10 tries but practice makes you better, I could take a picture but do you really want to see just the feet and part of the head, I have eight PCPs and I rotate one a week and this week is the Huben week, I got to say this gun is sick, Its bad, If i could just put a Mutant trigger and a Mutant type magazine on this gun I might sell my other guns and buy more Hubens. Oh this tick shot was at 42 yards.
Mike

The Taipan strikes again

.22 long, .217 23g H&N slugs, 935'ish fps. 100 yds. Big fatty too. I knew I connected but as the grass was kind of deep, and I was below him ... I didn't see him when he initially went down. I kept looking through the scope and then saw the "helicopter tail". Booyah. I took him off the roof of the car which you can see down near the farm equipment. #8 on the year, #3 with this Taipan.

Umarex Notos Bottle Conversion Cautions:

I have completed just over a dozen Notos bottle conversions using an Amazon purchased drop-block and wish to bring some of the challenges to light and discuss the issues I have found with the parts and fit-up.

First off is thread pitch, thread angle and such:

The thread pitch of the air block on your Notos to the drop block is M16X1MM. The air block needs a bottoming tap, this means that the tap has to have a flat end, no point.

The tap has to cut clean threads, you need to use cutting fluid and do short cuts, clear the threads often.

Thread pitch of the block gauge and foster fill fitting are both M10X1MM tapered threads. Please dont use non-HPA hardware and ALWAYS hand-thread the fitting all the way to the bottom of the hole before wrenching on them. Both holes also require that the fitting contacts the white teflon/nylon washer before tightening. The angle and thread tip are also specific to HPA

Second is the drop-block:

Every drop-block is threaded a little differently from the factory. Be aware that your drop-block may not clock with the air-block or it may be a perfect fit! PLEASE try to hand fit your air-block to your drop-block first before you send it off to be converted.

Third is the regulator:

When purchasing a regulator, make sure you purchase one with the pressure you want for the speed you are looking for. My Notos was set to 2200 psi on the regulator, I purchased the same and I still get around 750 fps.

You have two options when it comes to the plunger where the reg attaches to the drop-block. The first is to make a pin that fits inside the drop-block that will depress the plunger inn the reg, allowing air to pass from the regulator to the gun. This is a safety device and "allows" the bottle to be removed from the drop-block without the bottle emptying catastrophically.

The second option is to simply remove the end of the regulator and pull out the plunger, reattach the end and attach it to the drop-block. The safety is missing but is it actually needed?

I do provide a service to convert your Notos but you can do the conversion yourself as well with some tools. Good luck and good shootin!

Wischo magnum springer????????????

I remember in the 70s, before the R1 and I think before the Beeman Kodiak, Crow Magnum and Beeman RX1, there were 3 magnum springers. I remember the FWB 124, HW 35 and a Wischo ???? (not sure at all on the name or model). Does anybody know the last gun and/or post a picture. Love to get my hands on one but bet they are rare and expensive. Back in the 70s, were there other magnum springers I missed??? Thank you.

PCP Rifle  SOLD Regulated Bobcat MK1 .30 $700 or Trade

The .30 cal was just serviced by AOA about 5 months ago. They resealed the gun and changed all the orings, and rebuilt the regulator. I've put about 5 tins through it and have taken iguanas up to 146yds. Y'all can look up one of my posts. She has a few soft scartches but nothing you can feel or see without looking for it. Except for at the very end, near the picatini rail on the stock. The guns comes with 2 magazines.

Bit by the .20 cal. bug again

Today I wanted to shoot special. And I did, these are .20 cal.
IMG_6228.jpeg
I just put a scope this morning on the HW30 and 50. The 30 started the round taking a few minutes to zero it at 30 yds.
IMG_6229.jpeg
This is one of my newest from AOA along with the 50 and 95. I’ll keep this 30 forever. So unique.
The HW50 needed zeroing as well. Another dream rifle in the works. Piss off, having so much fun a Dear fly got me on the ankle.
IMG_6232.jpeg
Another AOA special the 95. This is a stupid accurate gun for very new. I had nothing this couldn’t hit up to 35 yds. Going to be a keeper once the springs get changed.
Now this baby has a Vortek spring but still waiting for the piston seal. Absolutely the most amazing rifle to own. When it’s on the rack light emits from it.
IMG_6235.jpeg
It’s hard to miss your mark, it’s that good. 25-35 yd.
This next puppy a HW90, I thought it would have a hard time following the 97‘s performance. This 90 is a leader , not a follower. The sounds that come from this gun are the 90’s only. Turned down to 18 bars seems to turn this gun into a magician. It’s more cost with the gauge and pump, but they turn turn this gun into a mind boggling miracle. This gun has a virus that makes you want more. Definitely in a league of its own.
IMG_6233.jpeg

The last is a R9. It is identical to the 95. I think this Beeman was the one that converted me to be a sinner of shooting the .20. The Dark side.
IMG_6236.jpeg
A tac driver.
I really don’t under stand why the .20 cal. seems to be so superior over the other cal. IMO.
I like handling them over .177, not as much fumbling. Been using JSB 13.??
Even when hitting spinners they hit the spinner in the center.
Would like a 77 and 98 in .20 cal.
‘These are current. I’ve never seen or had a chance for an older classic .20 cal.
AGS has had .20 JSB’s in stock last few months. Never been an issue.
All the guns above get a 5 star ratting.
Do you find the .20 cal. superior over the .177 and .22?

Can the bottle be longer than the barrel???

Serious question tho I agree it would look weird. Including any shroud still being shorter than the bottle length. Are there safety concerns.
I am looking at RTI p3 or 2 compact. Or a brk ghost compact.
With the bottle stored separate in the pack, a longer bottle would fit easily in the pack. But is there any danger of the pellet or slug hitting the bottle if it extends couple inches past the barrel???
I appreciate those knowledgeable helping me understand why I have not seen this in the wild. Thanks

Oh D### stuck screw

Ok, quick back story, popped the rail on my Maverick VP .25 to see if it was a 20 moa, wasn't, took pics, sent to FX. Put rail back on, I'll SWEAR I didn't over torque anything, I learned my lesson on that many decades ago. Decided today to pop of the 0 rail and put on the 20moa rail, screw one, loose, screw two, loose, screw 3 loose, screw 4...screw you. Ok went and got something for a smidge more torque, NOT a ball nose, not happening, no way and of course there goes the allen head. even tried the tighten a tad and loosen routing and nope I'm screwed. Of course it's the one that is under the rail so not easy to get to. Because I do have spare rails and the 20moa I was going to install, I could cut it apart. I'm open to suggestions, I really don't want to try to heat it and with the head messed up now it might be useless. I'm thinking the next thing is a LH drill and an easy out, or LH drill remove the head then hope there is enough sticking up to grab with vice grips and a smidge of heat. Or just leave it and let it gnaw on me forever. Suggestions welcome after you stop laughing.

An Evening with the Pro Elite

The Pyramyd Air Cup is fast approaching so I've begun practicing for the Piston Gunslynger event again. Last year, I decided to make the move from my beloved Russ Best tuned Beeman R10 in .20 to a .22 Air Arms Pro Elite. When I acquired the PE, I'm pretty sure it had the original piston seal in it since it was hard as a rock...I resealed it and re-lubed it with Tony Leach's signature lube and red and tacky on the spring. These are the results. Shoot-N-C targets are 5 @ 50 yards and the standard paper target is 10 @ 50 yards. Air Arms 16gr pellets.

Sub 1/2" groups at 50 makes me want to take this thing out to 100!

I left the piston seal *slightly* oversized. It would not fall under its own weight. Tamping the receiver on the group makes the piston fall about 1-1.5". Figured that will tame this beast a little bit and be a little easier on the scope.

Here's a 13 shot string. ES is slightly higher that I'd like but we are under 2% which is always a good thing. Producing about 19 FPE with these 16 grainers. 18 gr pellets push it up to 20. With the oversized seal that seems right about right and makes me confident that I don't have one with the dreaded "tapered tube" (if that was even a thing? Seems like there was some chatter on the old Yellow that that might have all been rumor and speculation). I also don't know the age or mileage on this spring. No kinks and no breakage so we are rolling with it.

I threw a CS500 lefty stock on here. Seems like a nice piece of wood and I really like the way it feels. Hawke Airmax Compact 6-24 is brilliant on a spring gun.

Just thought I'd type up this quick thread since I know how much you guys appreciate the rarer vintage stuff :) I almost feel bad shooting it as much as I do...
