Hello from a newby in central Ohio

Hello everyone,

I'm a bit new to airguns having only shot pump ones when I was a kid, and then getting a gamo whisper cat break barrel that isnt as silent as reported.

Now I've been looking at PcP airguns and pouring over videos and reviews trying to do my due diligence and research. Many are contradictory or just seem like advertisements.

Ill mostly be doing plinking, but wanting something to do small game like squirrels rabbits or cats. I want something reliable. I dont mind spending more for something better quality if theres a legit reason for it. I'm also looking at something quiet which is the draw to airguns with moderators. I'm wanting something quality, accurate, reliable, can shoot slugs or pellets, quiet and doesnt require alot of fiddling once dialed in. I'm looking at brk, the avenge x, fx but open to others. I dont care about brand names as long as its reliable accurate and good customer service.

Whats normal price for used air guns? Ive seen a few in various places but they seem priced high. I have a lead on a laminate FX crown mk1 in 25 but not sure what a fair price would be.

I'm going to a shoot near columbus ohio sunday and hoping to get some info there and look at various setups.

Any feedback is welcomed.

Who Has Been Coyote Hunting Lately?

The coyotes around me have been going nuts over the last week and I’m getting the itch to get after them but I simply don’t have the time. They’ve been waking me up howling and barking between midnight and 3 am. So this evening I heard one open up around 7:30pm and I couldn’t take it any more. I fetched one of my cheap diaphragm callers and started talking to them. I located one and got it to talk back. We chatted a couple of times over the course of 15-25 minutes. I then went in, grabbed a .357 Bulldog, put a little more air in it, loaded two slugs in a mag, grabbed my Trigger Sticks, and went outside hoping one would do something dumb. Shot in the dark, I know, BUT either it’s mating season or there are some young and dumb coyotes around here. Either way, I’m getting anxious waiting for an opportunity to take time off to hunt. If I can get a good 3-4 weeks in that will be lovely.

What have the coyotes been doing in your area as of late? What type of behavior(s) have you encountered? Have you been successful in hunting any lately? Are you day or night hunting them? Which gun and ammo combo are you using? What sort of nighttime setup(s) are you running: thermal, night vision, or torch/spotlights?

New to Air Rifles

Im new to air rifles and just inherited a few rifles and bunch of other stuff. I'm going to keep a couple guns for myself and get rid of some the others. Here is a small list of what I got.

Benjamin Marauder .177

Benjamin Cayden .22

Ataman M2R Sport .177

Daystate Huntsman Regal

Air Arms S500XS .177 with GRS stock

Also got a couple air pistols, handful of scopes and a compressor that I have no clue how to use. Im located in Corona. If anyone is close by that can come show me how things work that would be great. Thanks.

Benjamin  Benjamin Akela .177

hello everyone, this is my first post on here and what would be better to talk about than my first PCP airgun! I just ordered an Akela in .177 from airgun depot (220 bucks off with a free Benjamin hand pump) I have been trying to do some research online while im waiting for it to arrive but I am having some difficulty finding good information. does anyone have any chronograph numbers for the .177? I have seen some people saying they're sending 10.34s at around 1000 fps, is that the norm? also, other than shortening the hammer spring is there any mods anyone would recommend? once I get the gun in the mail and spend some time getting to know the gun I will be posting a ton of content on my YouTube channel as well to help spread any information shared here. thanks guys!

A Question to the Discriminating and Detailed Bench Marksmen...

...about “Being Drawn to The Shot”. Has this happened to you?

I’m talking about a previous shot on a target. Today, while practicing out to 50 using an 8.5 x 11 copy of an N50 card, I tried to put at least three shots in each of the 12 targets. I’d start at number one, end in number 12, then go back to 1, and each time rechecking wind and using the sighters available.

What I’ve noticed for a long time, even back to the shoot n see target days, it seems follow up shots get drawn to previous shots on the target. Didn’t matter to me back then as my rest wasn’t the best. But with my equipment upgraded and I try to cover all my bases during set up, I really took notice today. While aiming at that tiny center dot within a 3/8” circle, it didn’t matter if I adjusted elevation or held for windage, 90% of the time a second and even a third shot would land on where the first shot was placed. So some of the targets have all three within the X, some 3/4” away and low at 7:00 all stacked on top of each other, some 1/2” high at 1:00, again, all three on top of each other.

My questions: if wind was a steady factor of say 3-5 mph, does the angle of the shot from bench to target have a big play in this?(I’m on a slight 10 degree slope downwards from bench to target, btw). Three clicks left to right at 50 yards will show a change, right? In my case it doesn’t matter, the second shot lands on the first.

Or is it cheek weld sight picture thru scope? I make dang sure I have no black rims and my picture is wide open clear edge to edge.

Is it cant? My set up is a front tripod attached to arca rail and a ST rear monopod. I prelock my cant level with the ball head and unless I make a large swing left to right on the tripod, I never have to readjust the level.

Lastly, and I’m just throwing this out there- does it have anything to do with parallax adjustment not in “Sync” with a perfect ocular adjustment that’s typically done first when setting up a scope for the first time?

So before advising on this, just remember, my hold offs or windage/elevation adjustments are going to be as if I’m at a competition, a click or two there is usually what’s needed, so please don’t ask if I click over 10 clicks worth does it still follow the first shot, or hold off 3 whole MOA, because of course not it wouldn’t.

And remember, this is at 50 yards.

Delrin For Moderator Baffles?

Has anyone tried using Delrin for moderator baffles? It's easy to machine..easier than aluminum..

I'm thinking of making an attachment to replace the RTI barrel centering part with the teeny-tiny (semi-useless) holes. The hole size just seems insufficient to allow air to pass into the shroud, plus half the hole OD is blocked by the part's O-ring.

The concept is to replace the RTI part and make something like a muzzle brake that will be contained inside the shroud and shroud end-cap. The part would double as the barrel centering device and allow for unrestricted air flow back into the standard ~1" OD shroud and around the barrel..

I could probably use aluminum, but feel it would be easier to test something made with Delrin..if it's strong enough.

FX  Impact m3 1st reg has a mind of it's own

Yesterday while plinking I started getting extreme variation of fps. I noticed the Guage on 1st reg would pop back to 180, settle at 170, slowly sink to 140, stay there a few seconds and then repeat the whole thing. After a few cycles it would settle on 150 and stay there until the next shot. The reg was set at 160. The 2nd reg is set at 140 and is rock solid. Any suggestions, lame or serious would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jim

This will make you smile

My neighbor's eleven year old son killed his first buck late Friday afternoon, a four pointer. One shot through the heart. Dropped him where he stood. Saturday afternoon he picked up eleven doves. He said he lost two cause his grand daddy had the dog. His daddy's feet haven't touched the ground yet. Then, Monday afternoon he killed three Armadillos in the backyard with a old .22 caliber break barrel air rifle. What a Labor Day weekend ! Armadillos, I still find it hard to believe those sum beeches are in the South Carolina low country.

.22 vs .30 as an all round gun, which would you recommend?

I’m looking to get a PCP to shoot pigeons off my roof as well as a gun to shoot prairie dogs with. So far, the best I’ve found is a Daystate Red Wolf with a MTC 12x50 scope in .22 cal. The .22 seems most versificeer as it can shoot very light pellets around my house as well as slugs for prairie dogs. The .30 cal seems great for prairie dogs but hard to use around the house…. Anyone have suggestions?

FX  Same Strange Problem With 2 Different FX Impact M3 1st Stage Regulators

UPDATE:
FX got back to me about this issue. Their response:

"Honestly not sure why the regulators are giving you that many problems, even after rebuilding.
The 1st regulator stack should be "(( )) (( )) (( ))" with 12 washers.
19696-M (original brass piston) is not compatible with the 1st regulator, but 20858 (newest brass piston) is compatible.
Best Regards,
Kayla"

So when I ordered the brass pistons to replace the delrin ones, instead of sending me 20858 (newest brass piston), they accidentally sent me the ones that are incompatible with he 1st reg (19696-M).
As for the washer stack, (( )) (( )) (( )) is how FX is doing it now.

I'll give an update when the right brass pistons arrive and I install, test.

ORIGINAL POST:

From day one, the 1st stage reg on my Impact M3 was slow to recover and slow to respond or non-responisve to changes in pressure setting. One day it wouldn’t fill past 140 bar, even though it had been set to 190 bar. I degassed the gun turned the reg screw 1/4 turn out, refilled the gun, and it still read 140 bar. I turned it another 1/4th turn - still read 140.

The 2nd reg was set to 150 bar, so it read the same as the 1st: 140 bar. The bottle pressure read 220 bar. I tried a different 1st reg gauge to confirm that it wasn’t a problem with the gauge. Swapped out the stock wika with a Sekhmet. Still read 140 bar on both the 1st and 2nd regs.

Next I took the 1st reg apart and did these things:
  • inspected all the surfaces on the delrin piston and inside the reg with magnification, looking for anything irregular. Nothing found. Everything looked good.
  • replaced all o-rings
  • deburred and polished the washers (used 3M Zona 80-4 micron cloths for all polishing)
  • polished the piston
  • wiped everything clean
  • lightly lubed o-rings
  • Reassembled, keeping the washer stack the same: 3 stacks of 4 (())(())(())

I backed the screw out 2.25 turns since I knew this should bring me to around 190 bar based on how the reg performed in the past.
Filled tank to 220 bar. Now the 1st reg wouldn’t fill past 110 bar. Backed the reg screw out to 2.5 turns. Still wouldn’t fill past 110 bar. So now things are worse.

I contacted Utah Air, where I purchased the gun. They said it sounded like a bad reg so they sent me a replacement.

I installed the new reg and it wouldn’t fill past 130 bar. At 2 turns out on the reg screw, 2.25, and 2.5, it still read 130 bar. 2nd reg gauge also read 130 bar. I removed the reg and repeated the above reg inspecting and polishing process. Found no visible issues, and the cleaning/rebuilding resulted in no change.

I ordered a brass piston from FX. Installed the brass piston in the original reg. The reg wouldn’t fill past 90 bar. Installed the brass piston in the replacement reg. It wouldn’t fill past 5 bar. Very confused.

Thinking maybe I received 2 defective FX regs, I ordered a Huma 1st reg. It works perfectly. When I fill the gun the 1st reg gauge goes to the set pressure 3x fasted than the FX reg did when it was sort of working. After a shot it recovers about 3x faster. The needle goes right to the set pressure and stays there. No creeping up or down in pressure like the FX reg would.

I’m glad that the Huma is working, but I’m still curious what could be going wrong with the two FX regs.

Any ideas what could be causing the specific symptoms described above?

Unexpected visitor

An interesting day today. A honeybee in the front room ) carefully caught and released outside. A hornet in the dining room (dispatched without fear of recrimination) and this beautiful idiot in the utility room sitting on a shelf and staring at the fridge. I am clueless as to how it got in. Oh well, dove pie for dinner (not).

Air Arms S510 for indoor 10m - Iron sights

Hi all,

I have an Air Arms S510 that I hardly ever use because it is so pretty. There is an indoor airgun 10 meter event at a local gun club during the winter though, and that might be perfect for the S510. I would need to put iron sight on it though, and am trying to figure out how I could make that happen. It seems like I should be able to find a dovetail target rear aperture sight, but a front sight might be tricky.

My first thought was that I could drill and tap my 0dB moderator and add a screw in gold bead. I could use a crush washer to get it centered and keep it centered.

Anyone have a suggestion for a good rear aperture?

Any thoughts on my idea for the front sight, or another suggestion?

Thanks,
-pg

P.S. Here is an obligatory pic of the S510:

Fixed power FFP scope?

While perusing scopes on various sites, I came across the Optisan CP F1 MH10 scope

I don’t have a FFP scope right now, but I was under the impression that their main benefit was that the reticle size changes with the magnification. Since this is fixed power, what is the benefit? What am I missing?

September TEXtreme Field Target Match Report

I suspect the rather dilute attendance at our September 2-3 TEXtreme Field Target weekend had something to do with folks spending Labor Day weekend with family, doing somethings other than shooting pellet guns. Regardless, the somewhat suppressed attendance had no suppressive effects on the thrill-a-minute fun and camaraderie those in attendance apparently (all) enjoyed. Aside from a few instances of Match Director near-meltdowns, no one enjoyed it more than Maggyy and me!

Thirteen shooters contested the 58 shot rifle match featuring the highest difficulties yet designed into a TEXtreme FT course. And although temperatures approached a frigid-for-September-in-Texas high of only 100 degrees, uncharacteristically light winds for Ranchito Robinson through about mid-matches contributed to higher scores than the sicko Match Director expected when laying out the tortur… I mean, “EFT course”.

Rather than covering the details of the podium-placers’ equipment choices, I’ll happily… I mean reluctantly omit those details in the match report in deference to the spread-sheets most selflessly assembled by Art Womack. A million thanks, Art!

A complete and utter stranger to the podium, Derrick Wall got lucky… fifty-eight times in the sixty-shot Rifle match. His pure, BLIND LUCK failed him only on the Standing lane, where his obvious lack of any shooting skills whatsoever stood out like a sore right thumb on a Super Bowl quarterback. What? He’s left-handed? Oh… never mind. Derrick added to his EXTENSIVE collection of Match Winner prizes a $250 Airguns Of Arizona Match Winner gift certificate, a 24 karat gold (colored) Match Winner hat-pin, and large and small 99.99% pure silver (colored) TEXtreme Airgun Sports embossed pellet tins. Phenomenal Shooting, Derrick!

Jon Wren and I tied for Second Place in the Rifle match with 54/60 scores. Hoping to chicken-out (again) of the first tie-breaker method, a shoot-off, I scrutinized the score-cards only to discover the tie could not be settled by the second tie-breaker since Jon and I both cleaned the Standing lane. Neither could the tie be decided by the third method, since we both cleaned six of the ten lanes. Still hoping to chicken-out of the shoot-off, I decided my chances of beating the 6’13” Greek God Of A Man named Jon Wren in the fourth and fifth tie-breakers (cage fight and pissin’ match, respectively) were not that great. At least in a shoot-off, if my training had been good enough… of my pet scorpion to sting hell out of Daddy’s opponents, I might prevail.

Figuring since David slayed Goliath with just a rock, I might have some, slight, fleeting chance of prevailing against Jon in a BB-gun shoot-off… with a little well-timed ‘assistance’ from Stingaree. Suffice to say the battle of Me vs Jon was more ‘protracted’ than one imagines it takes for a rock going roughly 109 FPS to fly 40 feet and smite a giant to the ground. And although not nearly so epic a battle, our’s was as epic and PROLONGED, as this old fart cares to endure… no thanks to Stingaree!

So as to create the illusion of fairness, and thinking him easily bribed, I inflicted Match Director duties for the shoot-off on Jeff Cloud; Match Director at Arlington Sportsmans Club, another Texas field target venue. Unfortunately I misjudged Jeff’s character, as my bribe offer apparently fell on deaf ears because he announced our shoot-off would take place on one of the toughest targets on the course, that also boasts some of the trickiest winds (yes, even my targets are shameless braggards).

The 2” kill-zone prairie dog sits at 75 yards, on the opposite bank of the Raging River Of Wind. Applying the (definitely applicable) 1.25X wind multiplier to the 37.5 Troyer-difficulty target brings the OUCH factor to an intimidating 46.9T. And as if that wasn’t folly enough, Jeff then stated if the tie between Jon and I was not decided by the third round of the sudden-death shoot-off (like that was gonna happen unless we both missed three times!), we would then go to Standing position. At that point I thought, “If Jeff thinks he’s a comedian, he’d better not quit his day job!” However the spectators seemed WELL entertained.

Being pretty good at math, I decided a quick guesstimate at the difficulty factor from STANDING was all I cared to hazard at that particular moment... lest I go running away screaming like the little sissy I am. But for what(ever) it’s worth, the difficulty factor from Standing calculated (just now) was 70.3T! Knowing that Jon and I had both cleaned the prairie dog in the match, I figured our shoot off might last two or three rounds (from sitting position). But if so, I was certain it would then boil down to how many times from standing we both missed before one of us eventually dropped the target.

The spectators were clearly enjoying the shoot-off more than me. Outwardly I was cool as a cucumber. Inside, “not so much”. Inside, I was dying a thousand deaths. Trying to maintain my deception, I hoped the beads on my forehead too small to notice.

When Jon and I both connected on our first shots, the spectators yipped approvals. When we each connected again, the yips became hoots. When we each nailed our third shots, the gallery went wild!

The best description I can give for the feeling of rising from my stool is ‘shock’. The best description for when I dropped the prairie dog from Standing is ‘elation’. For when Jon also dropped the dog, ‘DEflation’!

When I dropped the target again, ‘relief’ in knowing I’d surely prevailed. Jon connecting yet again I’d describe as something “like a gut-shot”! So this is what they mean by ‘emotional roller-coaster’.

Upon dropping the target with my third Standing shot, ’DISBELIEF’ would be a supreme understatement. Upon Jon missing his third shot, I silently shouted “THANK YOU LORD!” Not so much from utter joy, but for finally ending the psychological torment. That was the toughest, most hard-fought First Loser prize I’ve ever captured. Also the most gratifying.

However my performance pales compared to that of Jon Wren’s. Sunday was not only Jon’s first-ever Extreme Field Target competition, and not only did he do it with a borrowed gun, but pre-match practice with Derrick’s Delta Wolf was the first time Jon ever shot a bull-pup! To not only podium with such an alien vehicle, but then pilot it through six rounds of such an improbably challenging shoot-off is more than a little impressive, Y’all. It’s the BB-gun equivalent of the Star Wars Starfighter dog-fight scene… only more exciting! Great shooting, Luke… I mean, Jon. Don’t spend all that $100 AoA gift certificate in one place Buddy.

In yet another display of android-esque BB-gun shooting, Pablo ‘I Ain’t Skeered’ Bracagliano CONQUERED Sunday’s pistol course like a competitive eater inhaling a bushel basket of hot dogs! Correction- more like a robot vacuum inhaling cat-hair dust-bunnies. If you’ve never seen Pablo shoot, all I can can say is his shooting form reminds me of a well-oiled latrine; truly poultry in motion!

Once the sweat stopped pouring and the soggy Pistol score-cards came in (thanks a lot, Boys), Pablo’s awesome 55/58 score prevailed for the $250 Airguns Of Arizona Pistol Match Winner gift certificate, a 24 karat gold (colored) Match Winner hat-pin, and large and small 99.99% pure silver (colored) TEXtreme Airgun Sports pellet tins. Pablo missed only one of 50 freestyle position shots, his two other misses coming on the four-shot Standing lane. Awesome shooting Pablo; you Da Man! Correction- part man.

The eight Pistol match entries falling one short of enough to award a second place prize, Derrick Wall’s 54/58 Second Place and Jim Clarke’s 53/58 Third deserve honorable mentions. Good shooting, Gentlemen.

All last weekend competitors received small and large 99.99% pure silver (colored) TEXtreme Airgun Sports logo-embossed collector-grade pellet tins, deserving of a much more flattering term than schwag. As the Match Director expressed in the Shooters Meeting, should sale of those tins not fund the recipients’ great great great grand-childrens’ retirements, the tins can be returned for full refund of the recipient’s match fees. Typical of the kind of high class on display in everything TEXtreme, you simply can’t beat a deal like that! Oh… did I say high class? I meant high CRASS!

We also had a door-prize drawing for a 99.99% pure silver (colored) TEXtreme Airgun Sports logo-embossed insulated aluminum drinking cup. In not only a stroke of extreme great FORTUNE, but carrying on what seems to be developing as an inexplicable TEXtreme door-prize tradition, once again the right recipient won the drawing. First-time-ever FT shooter Tracy Oliver’s ticket number was the one called by my petite little Door-Prize Assistant; who’s sweet little wiggle in her walk and giggle in her talk is enough to melt the heart of any self-respecting man. Oops, correction- sweet little wiggle in HIS walk and giggle in HIS talk. Thanks for the help, Jon! But do me a favor Bud- please wash that little pink thong I loaned you before returning it. And please ADD BLEACH to the wash cycle.

Despite the fact this has happened too many times to continue playing off as coincidence, believe it or not there was no Match Director bribe involved in the door-prize drawing that (again) went to the right recipient. A higher authority than even the TEXtreme Match Director must have a hand in these happily recurring door-prize occurrences. Hope you enjoyed your first FT match, Tracy. Apologies if I spelled Tracey wrong, Bud.

Many thanks to Airguns Of Arizona for your generous support of TEXtreme efforts. And thanks to all my shooters for not only all your assistance with the matches, but enduring my bobbles, shortcomings, quirks, foibles and idiosyncrasies. All I can imagine is Y’all have the tolerance and patience of a saint.

Or are as weird as me!

Happy Shooting Y’all,
Ron & Maggyy

P.S.- When Derrick saw this photo, no BS, he exclaimed "Damn I'm SMALL!":ROFLMAO: Might be somewhat a matter of perspective... that perspective considerably more poignant when standing next to a 6'13" giant! No, not me; I'm only 6'7".

I Missed !

I've taken 50 plus grey digger squirrels over the past 3 years. Mostly 30-90 ft using the back porch hand rail as a rest ( I'm 85 and a little unsteady). Haven't seen any in over a month. This morning 8:20am there were 2 eating up the bird seed. I keep a Gamo Urban 5.5 by the back door with a scope. As I tried to aim the sun was blinding the scope, I couldn't see a darned thing, Rats ! I'll get-em' next time. Bill
