Kalibrgun  .30 Cricket 2 Tac ~ legendary‼️

The .30 Cricket barrels are absolute performers. Lothar Walther; 1:29.9 twist, polygonal profiled, 600mm. I’ve sold/made-ready a dozen or so now and all performed beautifully. That’s an outstanding record of 100% out-of-the-box performers and rare, believe me.

Just set one up today with an Athlon Heras (great scope). Pulled a few patches using Gunzilla and then dialed her in across the chrony for 85 FPE with the JSB 50.15 grainers. Got trigger worked to produce a light first stage to a second stage wall that breaks cleanly at 4.5 ounces. Optically centered the Heras, torqued the EV rings (awesome rings) proper & mounted anti-cant bubble level. Plumbed the reticle to the action and headed to the 50 yard bench.

Tenacious Airguns

N/A  177 compact for rats

I've kinda narrowed it down between two rifles, but I am up for suggestions.
My application is 25y and in with a NV scope. I ordered a Wraith 4k Max to see if I like that. Also tempted by a Oneleaf NV400.
I want a compact design. If it was a bullpup I would want a cylinder not bottle. I shoot from a window and because of the spacing of them, a high design like the Mav Comp. I had was just too tall for the angles.

Right now its between these two:

Brocock Atomic
AGT Vixen

I'm not a fan of the dreamline.

HW/Weihrauch  HW50s AoA vs Krale

When shipping is factored in they are roughly the same drive-out price. However, I can get a 22 cal in a couple of days from Krale, but I can pre-order a 20 cal from AoA but it will be a couple of months (based on my last pre-order) before the 20 cal arrives. Decisions, decisions. Another thing, I might find one at the upcoming Hickory Airgun show next month. So it might be better to just hold off.

Help choosing a scope

I’m looking for a nice clear scope with a an illuminated reticle with a dot instead of a cross in the center. Minimum parallax of 10 yards preferably and a zero stop. It’s going to be used for target practice and pesting.

I have a Nexus that I got a decent price on used and I like the clarity and the reticle with the dot. If money was no issue I’d probably just get another new one but I’d like to stay under $1,000. Is there anything comparable in clarity and reticle with maybe a little higher magnification for less money? Thanks

The Art of Glassing

I may be taking creative liberty with my wording. I’m more so into technique and efficacy when it comes to scouting and target acquisition. Two of the largest challenges I’ve encountered are:

1) Sight to sound coordination. This means when I hear something on the woods, identifying the source of the sound using the two senses in conjunction.

2) Transitioning from a target acquired with the naked eye to binoculars, a rifle scope, or a spotting scope. This is self explanatory.

To improve on number two I try to use landmarks, but if I’m using a higher magnification optic and targets appear close range 20-40 yards, then my field of view is tight. Right now I’m sitting in my yard watching squirrels trying to prepare for the season opener. I’m practicing with a spotting scope with minute magnification of 14x.

Number one has been troubling me for a time. I don’t know if squirrels can throw their voices or what, but when they start barking I have a helluva time locating them. It’s especially tough while leaves are on the trees. More often than not I’m using sound to locate most prey during daytime hunts. I can tell when a squirrel is eating, moving, climbing, digging often by sound, but rings the source I’d the sound can be a challenge. To surround the challenge I’ve given musítele drills. As of late “stay on em” is a drill that I have found useful. The gist of it is to locate an animal with the naked eye and keep your eye on it no mater where it goes. The challenge is to wait them out once they stop moving. They may be behind a branch, leaves, or may have jumped to another branch out of view where movement can’t be easily detected. Don’t second guess yourself once you’re on them. That leaf isn’t always a leaf. Animals don specific colors and patterns for a reason. I find this really fun and challenging to do with birds flying and hopping around the forest canopy. I pick one out and stay with it for a specific amount of time (maybe 2-5 minutes). I don’t care if mosquitos are biting (well I do, but you get the point), flies are buzzing, or if it is one bird among my a flock. I stay on it. What I have noticed is that I can pick animals out better with the naked eye while they’re sitting or standing still. Now transitioning from the makes eye to glass is still a challenge here.

What challenges and solutions have you encountered or worked out when it comes to glassing?

PCP Rifle  SOLD Air Arms s400 MPR .177 >> $50 price drop x3 (Regulated + Alen Z tuned)

For sale is a used Air Arms s400 MPR. The price is $825 (was $875) for the rifle, an extra (shorter) air tube, hamster, scope riser (but not scope pictured), and air tube probe. Buyer pays for the shipping and gun will ship in hard case. (Hard case is in bad shape, but will provide good protection.)

Please email me at [email protected] with questions.

EDIT (9/26/23) - the gun's previous owner messaged me here to clarify a few details. (1) He purchased the gun new from "Bori at Topgun Airgun" so that makes me the 2nd owner. (2) He was told "that it was a prototype for the MPR-FT". (3) He "swapped to a regulated tube from I think Altaros". (4) The gun had developed a leak and was was showing erratic velocities, so the previous owner "sent it to Alan Z for work". <edits/>

I sent Air Arms the serial number and got back the following information on its original configuration:

MPR SPORTER .177 5.1 FTLB WALNUT RH RUBBER BUTT 07.09.2005

As you can see from the pics below, it does not have the rubber butt pad. Testing a couple of days ago confirms that it is currently shooting Air Arms 8.4g dome pellets at an average of 801 fps (11.9 fpe) and H&N FTT at 768 fps (11.3 fpe).

Installed on the gun is a longer air tube that has been regulated. This tube is set to accept a probe and does not use the quirky AA banjo fitting. Due to the long air tube, the bottom of the silver muzzle brake had to be scooped out to make the tube fit. Both the barrel and air tube have a few small specs where the bluing is gone (see pic below). Included in the sale is a shorter air tube. I have not tested it nor do I know much about it.

Back in April of 2022 I chony'd a full string of H&N FTT 4.52 from 2900 psi down to 1600 psi. (I'm short on pellets so I have not done a full string recently.) Here are details from that older one:

Pellet = H&N FTT 4.52mm
Fill start / end = 2900 psi / 1600 psi
Number of shots 90
ES = 16 fps
ES = 2.04%
FPS Avg = 777
FPE = 11.6

The FULL string on that was actually 105 shots with an ending velocity of 752 fps and finished at 1450 psi and I'm guessing the reg is set to about 110B.

The trigger is really, really light. It's worth noting that the 1st stage of the trigger barely returns to its resting position when you lift your finger from it. The bolt is smooth but I will occasionally feel that when you chamber a pellet, something catches it just a bit. It does not happen often. I wonder if the port had been opened up by a previous owner? I have not pulled the barrel out so I can't say (my borescope won't fit .177).

The wood is very pretty with a little tiger pattern but is used. Please see pics for some dings and scratches. The stock is right-handed. FWIW, I am left-eye-dominant and found this stock to be fairly usable shooting lefty. I guess that I'm not a perfectionist when it comes to fit. Speaking of fit, a nice hamster is included.

Other  Yawnnnnn...will 2024 bring any interesting new PCPs?

I don't know if I'm just getting bored with airguns but there hasn't been any interesting guns to buy in recent memory. The two models I had half an eye on this last year turned out to be pretty meh: the BRK Ghost was too similar to my Impacts and the Skout turned out to be an ultra heavy, uber expensive & gimmicky talking niche gun. This Skout was touted to be some revolutionary, game-changing super rifle but, after the initial hype, it sure seems to have landed with a big thud. The much hyped FX Panthera was also a yawner b/c it's purpose built for purpose that is of no interest to me.

Without anything new and exciting to buy, I found myself buying more Impacts and Leshiy 2's . . . neither of which I needed. Oh yeah, I was very fortunate to find Michael's Colibri last month and got reunited with probably the only rifle that I've truly regretted selling but even then, we're talking about a rifle that is like a decade old?

So what are you guys looking forward to? Are there any cool new rifles coming out in the near that have you excited?
