FX  Wildcat compact 22 and Altaros slugs👍

Another winter tinker that could be a long winded story but I’ll cut to the chase. It concerns my FX Wildcat, which has served duty in many configurations from 177 to 30 in compact (500mm) and sniper (700mm) form. It started out as a Mk3 tubed version and was converted to a BT through the addition of a plenum tube and bottle adapter. Its most recent config was in 500mm 30 cal but it was made redundant by the arrival of a Sidewinder mini in .30. I decided to turn it into a dedicated little 22 slugger with a heavy 1:16 liner. Nothing new there - Ted Bier and others have posted numerous videos singing the praises of the WC BT compact 22 slugger. The twist here is that I wanted to get it shooting the high BC Altaros 32.3 grain slugs at their favored speed of 880-900fps. I thought that might be a tall order at 56+ FPE, requiring some modification of the valve or deletion of the second reg. However, the little powerhouse came through without having to exceed 150bar. I was also able to keep the stock pellet probe, which keys into the tail of the Altaros slugs ensuring perfect axial loading and smooth magazine operation. YMMV, but pin probes have never done me any favors.

Here’s the config details:

1:16 500mm heavy liner, cleaned and installed into the TP and jam nut with a tight fitting Teflon tape wrap and only one 8x1 oring at the top of the jam nut. Another personal preference over the seemingly wobbly stock 3X oring setup.

CF liner sleeve bonded to the liner with silicone sealant.

Stock pellet probe with port opened up to match the TP without removing any of the circular face that contacts the slug.

Huma slug transfer port.

Heavier brass hammer weight from the Huma WC/Maverick tuning kit with stock spring.

180/150bar Reg1 and 2 and HST set 2 turns out before coil binding prevents cocking.

Regarding the tune, a 150bar plateau speed of 895fps was hit at around 1 turn out from binding on the HST. The shots were loud and clearly wasting air. The surprise was that, even with the excessive air, the slugs seemed to be hitting the same spot. In any case, I dropped the speed until the shot cycle settled. The resulting speed was 880fps and the ES was 4. I’ve read so many times that excess air will destabilize slugs so I wasn’t very optimistic about settling so high on the curve (98.6%) but from what I could see, the slugs were stacking 😳 and the sound was snappy. Perhaps the heavier slugs are not so easily upset? Perhaps it’s an old wives tale born from expectation rather than empirical testing. IDK.

So, here we are with a WC compact 22 shooting 0.18BC slugs at 880fps for 56fpe! For context, that high BC means that the slugs are delivering 47fpe at 100 yards. That’s a pretty useful compact rig. I’ve run it before with a standard liner and light slugs and it was pretty good. But this is (so far and fingers crossed), way better. Here’s a group of 8 at 50 yards with the spent stack of slugs plucked from the duct seal under the target shown at the top. These included the first shot of the day…

IMG_0704.jpeg

I’ll be taking it out further in the next few days.

Here’s a pic showing the guts after diy conversion from tube to BT. From L to R, BT plenum, original reg section (which I think gives it a slightly larger plenum), another small plenum and then the bottle adapter.

IMG_0703.jpeg

Finally, a pic of the pellet probe keyed into the base of an Altaros slug. I suspect this plays a role in the exceptional accuracy of these slugs.

⁍⁍ Did someone say: "We need BETTER PROJECTILES" ??

In another thread @Triglav observed that in powder burner research & development the emphasis has shifted away from simply adding more gun powder in ever increasing cartridges.

And then he said:
"Same principle applies to airguns:
WE NEED BETTER PROJECTILES, not more air through the port, or a larger caliber."

Well said. 👍🏼

🔘 We have NSA blazing the projectile trail with lowering the price of the formerly very expensive slugs.

🔘 We have Altaros blazing the projectile trail with doubling the BC for slugs.

🔘 We heard FX announce "the replacement for the airgun pellet" — that particular exaggeration was published a year and half ago.

➧ I am quite sure that we will NOT follow the advice of their misguided marketeers and "say goodbye to pellets." 😉

🔆 However, I am convinced that a good many of us would have use for a hollow point projectile that:
▪ has an amazing expansion in flesh upon impact, and that
▪ has a high enough BC in order to keep up its impact velocity out to 40 or 50 or more yards — so that that amazing expansion can actually happen!
➔ I'd suggest a true (not fudged) *BC of 0.050*.

➔ Incidentially, a BC of 0.050 would also limit the range and impact of the projectile when used for angled shots into the trees:
At this BC the impact energy of the projectile returning to earth is rather low, cf. graph below.

🔘 Besides better projectiles I have others repeatedly call for barrels that are much better adjusted to the projectiles — and that are more consistently made (one true diameter, not a "nominal" diameter/caliber).
Sounds right!

🔆 These are great times to be an airgunner! 😊
Let's see what the Shot Show, IWA, & Co will bring this year. I hear that Niels at NSA is working on a new projectile that will have great expansion.

Fill tank valve upgrade, what would you do differently to your's....

I've got an Air Venturi tank that the Midland Diving Equipment valve is leaking on. So far I haven't been able to source the correct valve seal from anyone, so maybe it's time to upgrade the fill apparatus. What have you done to upgrade how you fill your PCP's off the tank? And/or, what would you do differently to the fill system to upgrade?

FX  FX Impact M3 - fired with bolt open

My buddy just purchased an Impact M3 from this site and was shooting it for the second time so it’s still brand new to him. He accidentally fired it with the bolt open and now it’s leaking at the first regulator gauge. He emptied the magazine (25 or so shots) and it functioned fine. It‘s still leaking air.

Where does he start? He’s a powder burner gun builder but new to PCP…

Any help would be appreciated.

N/A  Slow isn’t the word

Just picked up an order I made. Ordered 4 sets of Vortek springs on Dec. 26th.
IMG_7857.jpeg
I thought they were lost. Ordered springs from the UK 2 days after the Vortek order, got it 2 weeks ago. I could have driven there (Vortek)in just over 6 1/2 hours. The Pony Express would have been faster. Month + is ridicules. I called Tom yesterday but line was busy. This will be my first under powered set to install, going in a 95 .177, try it? Also one is going in a 97 .177.
‘All together since last winter I’ve collected 17 sets to install from 3 different manufacturer.

Now I have match up springs to a rifle. The fun begins. Crow

Other  Pellets VS. Slugs Redux

So I was just reading a thread from back in 2022 about shooting pellets vs. slugs and what was the fascination with slugs. Many of the posters in the thread talked about no factory slug gun/slug combo that could out shoot pellets at that time? Have things changed since then 2 years later? The talk and buzz about slugs still seems as hot as it was back then but has anything changed to make shooting slugs a better choice than high quality pellets?

What new gear are you getting with your tax return refund?

The IRS has officially opened for filing.
If you are one of the lucky ones who anticipates getting a refund this year, what is the top new gear on your list to get with your check?

Stocking up on ammo? Getting the new rifle you haven't had the cash for? Third party accessories?

Huben  GK1 Perfected (v1 and v3 differences?)

GKP.jpg

The GK1P (Perfected) is almost finished, I need to check more tolerances with test prints and polish a few things, but you whould have it soon on cults along with my loading gate and moderator and treat correction mod.

In resume, is a new handle that eliminates the waste of space of the original (that protudes far beyond the upper slide) and incorporates an adjustable power wheel on the base with indicator (up to 4 revolutions, can be limited with add on piece to comply with local airgun laws), plus detachable rear stock, plus optional piccatiny rail down the tank, wich I found it pretty stupid but people like those.
I also changed the trigger system, now its press on instead of rotation axis, I like those more, less prone to double shot than the original I think, the rotation still happens and no extra pieces needed, the trigger itself push a rotation lever, that allow to place the trigger further, even made custom ones to fit position.

Now the things I want to know... I only have a V1, so all is based on that, It should work on a V3 as long as everything is on the same place.

Mi question... the power adjust valve on the V3 seems a bit shorter that in V1, that forces me to design a variable length power wheel, you use a real allen key fitted inside (just saw cut a little chunk of it, or 3d print one if you have acces to stronger plastics...) but I still want to know if the valve is on the exact same spot (just shorter) or not, cause if not I'm pretty much screwed.

Besides the allen key, you only need a shorter bolt to place it on the same spot that the original, you can cut the original... but better not to to destroy anything of a so much stupidly expensive pistol.

Are there any other differences on the down part of the gun beetween V1 and V3? caus I REALLY need to know that before put the thing to download.

[UPDATE] General Advice Dealing with Roll/Pins/Punches

Hello Friends!

I made a comment in a thread earlier today that made me realize I should probably ask the wider community for advice as we have tons of highly skilled tradesmen, crafters, and engineers amongst our ranks.

I’ve always struggled with pins, initially it was because I was worried I’d break something so I babied them (aka not enough force to get them to budge). But now I’m trying to remove the pin that holds the Leshiy 2’s “Locking pin” in place and I’m having an extremely difficult time ejecting it.

Do people have any sage advice regarding dealing with stuck or frozen pins? So far I’ve applied Kroil and confirmed it has seeped through.

Put a drop of Kroil in here
IMG_7572.jpeg

and it even made its way through as evidenced by the wet spots surrounding the other side of the pin and the locking pin
IMG_7574.jpeg

IMG_7573.jpeg

So far I’ve managed to get the pin to move by probably 2-3mm but it won’t move any further. Any advice is appreciated!

And just general tips or advice people have found to be useful when dealing with pins.

Thank you!

Snow Peak M60b .22

Shoots jsb redesigns like lasers and hits hard. Only had it about two months enjoyed hunting with it. Really just wanted to try out a budget gun and see how it measured up. Now with new toys on the way this one will get set aside.

The only change I made was bumping the reg up to about 150. This version has a foster fitting for fill instead of removing the bottle.

500 shipped. No trades
