Law of diminishing returns

A very long time ago I created a some what odd thread: How to select your #1 primary rifle / FT rifle when you have over 20 wonderful <20 ftlb shooters at your disposal? I took my own advice and the results are very interesting. I will preface the 3 pictures with this, I have whittled the field of contenders down from over twenty to just three and all three finalists shoot within a 1” square at 60 yards.
The final three are
A .177 Daystate Sapphire a $3500. Gun, using a sightron 4-20x50 S-tac scope
A .177 Brocock Ghost Carbine a $2250. Gun, using a sightron 10-50x60 FT scope
A .177 custom built Crosman HFT Challenger a $1269. Gun. using a sightron 4-20x50 S-tac scope

All three shoot equally well from bench or sticks BUT in field target or pesting we have to take some forced position shots.
Being as my right side has some Neuro motor damage, this means a gun has to work not just from a bench, but also offhand in such a way as I can have even a remote chance of hitting what I am aiming at.

The Test: 10 shots each, scopes at 16x pwr and in the standing position, 25 yards, no wind, morning light.

In order of shooting:

#1 Ghost,
#2 Sapphire,
#3 Crosman Challenger.

One huge factor in this test is how quickly my injured muscles fatigued. This probably gave the ghost the edge and the ghost was also the easiest to load. Tomorrow, time permitting, I will shoot the same 3 guns but reverse the order to see how much my injuries / positional fatigue affected the outcome. The Ghost also had a different scope although set to 16X.

Gun flexability, or gun numbers...which?

This only generally if you are one that shoots both pellets and slugs. each has a generally preferable tune to achieve best grouping. But this question can apply to different power setting for pellets as well. So, would you be content to set a flexible power gun for all needs, or do you acquire a gun for the purpose? I guess money would dictate this. For example, I have a vet 2 in 22 that can be adjusted fairly quick between 18-44 foot pounds energy. but I would prefer to set the vet high and get , say , a BRK atomic or similar for the low power applications. I maintain money is the overiding factor in the decision, but if not, what would you chose?

Kalibrgun  Cricket fill probe oring only survives one fill

I recently bought a used Cricket and I can only fill the the gun up once and the o-ring is damaged. Is this a common issue or is there something wrong with my fill probe. The probe itself looks a little beaten up but not too terrible. I don't know what type of o-ring they are but it feels like silicone. The guy who sold me the gun gave a few. Maybe they are too soft.

N/A  Recommendations for small/light pest gun?

I have been doing pest control (i.e., rats, mice) in the garden. I have been using my favorite rifle, a HW30S, but it is in .177. It works, and I prefer .177 for plinking and target shooting, but I'm thinking I might need a .22 (unless someone can dissuade me).

Some of my priorities:
  1. small/light/easy to handle (sub-6lb in weight)
  2. quiet/backyard friendly
  3. Accurate or offer quick follow-ups.
I can't claim to be a great shot, but I can usually hit the pests in low light/nighttime. It needs to be effective at short distances (most of my shots are within 15 feet, though capabilities at further ranges will be nice). I prefer traditional airguns, I am aware of PCPs and their advantages, just not ready to dive into the whole setup. I can't think of anything at the moment that is well-powered that is not (1) PCP, (2) slow at pumping, (3) loud, (4) heavy or difficult to cock.

Are there guns that you all would recommend? Can't promise I'll be purchasing, just considering my options at this time. Thanks!

N/A  Recommendations for scope or red-dot for Beeman P17

Just as the title suggests. I am looking for recommendations for a scope or red-dot for a Beeman P17.

Given that I only paid $7.50 for these P17's, I don't want to spend a lot of money on optics.

Just something better than the open sights that come with it.

Thanks in advance!

All my best!

Is there a bug in FX Radar app?

Hi.
My FX Pocket Chronograph v2 doesn't read nor register any shots. When I turned it on the chrony started reading some "high speed" over 1100 fts. shots without me even using a gun. I turned it off, then, back on and it doesn't read any shoots at all ever since. I've tried placing it in a different location on the barrel, but it didn't help.
I called UA and I was told that the issue is because of a bug in FX Radar app and that FX is aware of this and is working on a fix. They have no ETA on a fix release date. It seems odd because the app connects and recognize the device + V1 chrony that I also have works just fine. Maybe I'm wrong but, if that would be an app issue most likely all Pocket V2 devices won't work and I imagine it would be discussed throughout on this Forum. I couldn't find any threads with similar issue. The chrony is 2 months old and was working when I bought it. IS THERE A BUG IN FX RADAR APP THAT PREVENTS FX POCKET CHRONOGRAPH V2 FROM READING AND REGISTERING THE SHOTS?

Beeman  HW30S & HW95N fun

I’m stuck inside dealing with a health issue and have been having such fun with my two favorite springers!
I’m mostly a PCP shooter but there’s something about a quality break barrel that makes it so much fun.
The way they work really makes you feel like you’re part of the rifle, cocking and pushing the pellet in then closing the action with a tight snick, and then the awesome trigger and finally firing the shot.
I’m forever hooked on springers just as bad as PCP’s lol.
The HW30S is .22 caliber and the HW95N is .20 caliber.
And yes I use the treadmill, it makes a wonderful coat rack.
Have a great day everyone!

Daystate  My Daystate Huntsman Classic Leaks Badly - Need Help

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a used Daystate Huntsman Classic, the one with the short, brown, non-removable air cylinder. in .177. If I fill it today, tomorrow it will be empty. It leaks so bad that when I shoot a 25 shot benchrest target starting with a 170 BAR fill, by the time I'm done it is at 100 BAR. The air gauge also does not work, and I'd like to lighten the trigger. I've found videos on Huntsman Regal's and newer, but none on how to service this one. The gentleman I bought it from said it was in excellent condition, and refuses to take it back, saying that "you never know when a seal is going to go bad, it can happen at any time." Right, but what about the air pressure gauge you didn't tell me about?

I don't know if I have the skills to fix it myself although I'd like to try, and get to know the gun better in the process. I have completely taken apart an Air Arms TX200 and polished all the internals, cleaned, lubed, put it back together, and sold it to a club silhouette shooter who says it is the best TX he has ever had. So I hope that is enough skill to fix this gun.

Anyway, can someone please point me to some instructions to figure out which O-ring is bad and how to repair it? I figure that as old as it is I may as well change as many seals/O-rings as are accessible while I'm in there, and I know AOA sells a replacement gauge for $35. I figure lightening the trigger should be easy if I know which screws to adjust.

It's either me trying to fix it, or sending it off to a pro who will charge north of $200.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Scrench

Airgun Technologies  New gun - .22 Vulcan 3 700mm / Synthetic Stock - Slugs - what are you guys running?

Per the title of this thread - I just got my new gun yesterday (Friday 05 April) and did some very early testing with it today with the little bit of ammo I happen to have available.

I bought it from Talon Tunes and asked Tony to tune it so that I could get 32 - 34 grain slugs flying out of it 970-990'ish fps. They (apparently) tuned it using some altaros slugs in that weight range and had to dial the reg up to around 155 bar to achieve that velocity. Great. Gun arrives - I start looking through what I have available here in the house - a tin of .217 H&N's @30g. I get a scope on it and get a rough zero and then start sending some of these H&N's - I didn't run it over a chrony so I honestly have no idea how fast they're going. It was stupid windy out today too so definitely not a day for doing any kind of real true accuracy / testing. These H&N's shot pretty good at 30 and 50 yards given the wicked l-r cross wind I was dealing with. I don't plan on buying the altaros slugs - I looked and they seem kinda pricey . . . NSA's are probably the best bang for the buck ( thank you Nick & Family ) but I'm game for ZAN's, Patriots, etc . . . . I had heard / read that Zan has sample packs now - I googled and sure enough they do. I might look into some of those (a .217 and .218 pack).

So . . . for you guys who have this gun and are shooting slugs with it - I'm just curious to hear what is working for you and at what speed. If / when we ever get nice weather again ( seriously starting to wonder about that . . . {sigh} - Upstate N.Y. ) I'll obviously run it over a chrony and do some 'proper' testing / tuning - but hoping to maybe get some ball park data from you guys in advance.

FX  FX Crown

Big shout out to Bigragu and all his help and direction. FX Crown 177cal. 500mm barrel I JB welded a sleeve onto the liner. When you do this the washers will not work Cape Fear 901 has the sleeve and the special washers needed to put in the barrel since the old ones will be too small. I took some pictures of my experience the worst group was 1/1/4" the best was 3/8" which was position F which is where it is going to stay it had one flier about 1/8" from the rest I did try G & H but they were at least an inch or so. Everything was shot at 50 yards. I shot 7 to 9 pellets at each barrel position. JSB 10.3.

Air Tanks  NLA WTS : 2 PCP bottles

For Sale : 2 bottles with valves. 490cc/.5L
I bought an Air Force Texan LSS , came with 3 bottles. These 2 do not go with my rifle.
Study photos as I do not have any other info. The fittings shown in photo #6762x were on the bottles.
The fitting on left has has the hex bolt cut as they were striped. I wanted to remove them for the photos.
I spoke with AirForce rifles. They said the bottle with FK prefix is one of theirs. Both bottles look similar to me.

$100 plus $15 postage.

Diana  Let's see your Giss guns.

First, i've never been much for 10m shooting and i have a couple of built up 1377s that suit my short range needs. But i have a new found respect for these giss guns. They are just easy to hit the mark.
To windy here today to get outside and the longest i can get in the house is 13 yds. It seems to really like the sigair match pellets. With these target sights i'm starting to find my groove, it was a struggle at first.
Being this is the only giss gun i have ever shot, i don't know if they all compare to this or not? Love to see some other examples of what's out there.
The fellow that i got the 333 from also had a 75 for sale but the price was up there imo. I'm now looking at the pistol variations, who knows.

Rockchucks a story

Rockchuck Hunting on the Columbia River.

In a secluded part of the Columbia River, where basalt cliffs tower above, the river as it flows its way to the Pacific. leaving my truck, I embarked on a solitary adventure. Armed with my 105X 25 pellet rifle, I sought out elusive prey: the yellow-bellied marmots, known as rockchucks in this part of the world.
The sun was still low in the sky, casting long shadows across the canyon walls. The air smelled of sagebrush, and the distant flow of the river provided a soothing backdrop to my pursuit. Rockchucks are no ordinary critters, they inhabit desolate expanses, challenging even the most seasoned hunter. Unlike the hyper pace of ground squirrel or a rabbit rockchucks offered a different kind of thrill.
Why did I choose the rockchucks as my quarry? Perhaps it was the beauty of the country itself—the desolate beauty of eastern Washington foothills. The canyons with its solitude, the wind-swept canyon stretched as far as the eye could see. Rockchucks, with their yellow bellies and stout frames, blended perfectly into this rugged landscape.
As I crept along the basalt cliffs and rip rap, my eyes scanned for movement. Rockchucks are great at concealment, their fur blending with the rocky terrain. Spotting one was like finding a nugget of gold. My reward for patience and observation. And when I did spot him. I stopped motionless. The rifle nestled against my shoulder, I took aim.
The shots pop had a slight echo through the canyon, and the rockchuck tumbled. Its orange-brown fur contrasted sharply against the gray rocks. But this was not mere target practice; it was my communion with nature. Each successful shot this day felt like a tribute to the wilderness and appreciation to the forces that shaped this land over the eons.
I would sit on a warmed boulder, watching the river below. The current flowed relentlessly, carving its way through the basalt layers, heading its way to the Pacific ocean In those moments, I felt connected to the land, to the river, and to the animals that called this place home. I felt at peace.

N/A  Least problematic air rifle brand for newbies

I was thinking this would be a good thread for newbies who want to jump into the world of PCP rifles. Recommendations should be from personal experience and divided into 3 categories. Low power/plinkers/hunters/target, Medium power/hunters/target and High power/hunters/target/competition. Some rifles may occupy more than one category.

Low Power:
Air Arms S510 .22cal
Weihrauch HW 110 .177cal
Daystate Red Wolf .177

Medium Power:
Air Arms S510 .22cal + .25cal
Daystate Red Wolf .177
Daystate Red Wolf HP .22cal
Airforce Condor .22cal
FX Crown MK2 .25cal

High Power:
Daystate Red Wolf HP .22cal
FX Crown MK2 .25cal
FX Impact MK2 .25cal
BRK Ghost .25cal

Although the Impact can be considered problematic by some, I kept my reg pressure down to 110 bar and never experienced any leaks or issues. The Ghost is a recent acquisition, but I don't anticipate any problems based on others experience. For my use, the only rifle I would not buy again from the above list is the Impact.

Projectiles  NLA .357 155 gr pure lead beermug slugs

20231215_195947.jpg
I still enjoy casting and really take pride in these slugs.

They are 155 gr hollow points. Pure lead. I call them the beer mugs.

They have proven to be extremely accurate in slow twist big bore air rifles like the Benjamin bulldog and the slayer 357.

Everyone I've sent sample packs too says they just STACK , they are good anywhere from 850 fps to 950 fps.

Thread 'Shout out to my buddy, CTAIRGUNNER! (Slayer 357)' https://www.airgunnation.com/threads/shout-out-to-my-buddy-ctairgunner-slayer-357.1310096/

Here is a thread with some results. I have tested these at 60 yards on cantelope and each shot expanded exactly the same, that's CONSISTENCY.

They will be sold in bags of 100, price per 100 slugs is $57.50 shipped.

I do venmo and zelle.
