FX  Trying to hit ~900 fps with .22 Dreamline and 18 grain pellets

Here's the deal: I have a .22 Dreamline Classic with a 500mm barrel. The regulator is set at 100 bar. I'm shooting 18 grain pellets and would like to get near 900 fps. I suspect I'll need to slow things down to achieve optimal accuracy, but I'd like to hit 900 to give myself more space to work. I should be able to reach these speeds, right?

I did the whole rigamarole with adjusting the hammer spring tension and regulator pressure. Even with a nearly maxed out hammer spring at ~115 bar, I'm only getting a very erratic 870 fps. Am I asking too much of the 500mm barrel? I'd like to maintain a decent shot count, so I'm trying to avoid high regulator pressure.

Ideas?

Results  Ultimate Field Target @ PRGC, 05/25/2024 Night Match Report

Phoenix Rod and Gun Club and Ben Spencer hosted a UFT night match on 05/25. A total of ten shooters attended, 3 rimfire, 1 slug, and 6 pellet.

Photos were provided by Scott, Dan, Ben, and Wes (thanks guys!) While these guys took some really great photos, it's really hard to capture just how cool it is to shoot a match at well-illuminated targets in the otherwise dark night....nothing else quite like it.

Multiple shooters reported to me that the beginning of the match had some light and variable winds that needed to be accounted for, but even those light winds died off later in the match and became not much of an issue. One shooter estimated the temp in the mid 70's. Overall sounds like just about perfect weather for a field target match.

Tony T chose to spend his 39th (;)) birthday with some of his shooting buds at this match. The story I got was that his family couldn't understand why he wanted to celebrate by shooting a match and he told them he can celebrate with them any time, but a UFT match was happening and he wanted to be there to try out his new Pardini!

Steve M got sick at some point during the match, said he had some pretty severe heartburn. It didn't appear to affect his score much though, as he turned in the overall high score of the night.

Tom C of American Air Arms competed in the slug class. Sounds like he was doing some testing on a .223 slug EVOL and started the match with not much dope. His scorecard tells the tale. He was 2/16 on his first 4 lanes, but something clicked on his last shot of his fourth lane and he went 25/28 on his next 7 lanes. ie he figured out his trajectory and shot like a house on fire the rest of the match.

Tim G is a first-timer and turned in a very respectable score for first time at a night match. I heard that he, Van, and Ben shot through the course again this morning, prior to getting the course torn down and put away. This is an opportunity Ben offers to those willing to help put the course away and I'd recommend taking him up on it. It ends up being a win-win. He gets some help, and the volunteer gets some practice in on a real course.

And how bout Wes C, turning in a 44/48 in the pellet class?!?! and using the .22 Monster RDs none the less. When they're good they're GOOD! Wes's score with pellets bested some of the slug and rimfire shooters even. For a pellet launching airgun lover such as myself, I love to see a pellet shooter do so well.

Overall course Troyer was a 33.6, not accounting for the standing tripod shots. Those are a new twist and I'm not too sure how to include them now. They're much easier than true/actual offhand. For reference, the "easiest" shot was a 1.75" @ 35 yards for a 20T and the "hardest" was a 1.75" @ 75 yards for a 48.2T. I included those 5 highest T targets in the stats, as well as the 4 standing tripod shots.

Great shooting everybody.

Here's the equipment list and scores...

Thanks to PRGC, Ben and help and anyone else who took part in the behind-the-scenes for making this match happen.

Anyone take advantage of Airgun Depot sale?

Been on the hunt for a rifle with more power than my hw30 in .177. Looked d34s, and various clones. Thought about a gas ram for a while, I have never had 1. Finally came across the agd website having their sale for the weekend. After cruisin' through pages of rifles I found the Crosman Vantage NP in .177 on sale, and still able to use the discount code. Rated at 1200 fps with alloy. After reading the reviews and whatever else I could find between them, PA, and posts here I ordered the combo. I am prepared for the scope to be a disappointment, and to have to do the bearing mod on the trigger. Overall the rest of the reviews are quite favorable. I also like the idea it comes with a wood stock, although no fancy high figured walnut or anything like that. To be fair you can't buy a nice walnut blank for the cost of the whole rifle. Either way I am a big Crosman/benjamin fan, and it seemed right that my first go at a gas ram style springer would come from them.

supposed to arrive Friday. Looking forward to putting it through it's paces. I would prefer if only the front sight was fiberoptic, but at least it comes with open sights. I imagine we are still in the time frame where this will be "old" stock, and fall into the now collectible pre-Daisy/gamo Crosman production. 😁

RAW Rapid  Deciding between a DonnyFL Koi and Sumo on my .25 RAW

I know the Sumo might be a little quieter, but the size and weight is also a little more than the Koi. With the thin, floating barrel on the RAW rifle I am thinking the thinner but slightly longer Koi might look a little more uniform but still do a good job. The RAW rifle I bought did not come with a moderator and I need to quiet it down some for sure.

Does anyone own both on a RAW and have any opinions?

N/A  My Iguana Hunt in Florida !!!

I just got back from an Iguana Hunt in South East Florida, in the Canals just below Fort Lauderdale. I booked the hunt with the Python Cowboy's Outfit.

Mike and Otto were booked up thru Sept so we got, Sammy and Matt and the new dog, Phoenix. Phoenix is a 13 month old German Wirehaired Pointer like Otto with a similar amount of enthusiasm for the job of Retrieving the spent Lizards. She was one of the highlights of the trip.

I had also booked a Pig Hunt but the day before I was to leave I found out my gun case was oversized and commanded another $240 each way! I had no other gun cases that would have made the New Size Restrictions. (L+W+H = < 62" total.")

So I cancelled the Pig Hunt and left my guns at home. This turned out to be not a bad thing as the guns supplied by the outfitter were "Edguns Leshy .30 cal. Semi Autos !"

I had never heard of these guns and they are not cheap! But they work very well, are deadly accurate and didn't malfunction even once. Not only that but they cost 10X what my Air Venturi Avenger cost.

After a few teething problems with the "Sighting in" of the guns, they got adjusted and we started hitting the lizards. I hit one perfectly in the head adn it literally blew the back side of it's head out DRT! However there were many that required several shots to dispatch because if you don't hit their "Pea Sized Brain" They are NOT Dead and can still evade capture, and especially if they get in the water.

A .177 gun would kill them just fine as long as you could make proper shot placement. Like if you were on land shooting from a braced position. however shooting from a Moving Boat Off Hand a body hit will slow them down enough to make follow up shots. And that's why they like the .30 cal. Guns.

We had a great time and the $1250 got us a Boat, 2 Guides a Dog and really nice guns to shoot. You can have up to 4 p[people on the boat for the same price, which in the world of Guided Hunts is a Screamin' Deal!

Any way here's some pics. We got 16 Iguanas in the 4 hours we were out and saw some pretty cool stuff. Did I mention,, We had a Really good time !!!

$2,500 with out scope and mounts
Shoot me offers.

Pink Unicorn of scopes

I buy mostly used airguns and in the process, get a lot of, shall we say, "less than desirable" scopes. A while ago, I bought a second FX Royale in .22, and on board, was one of "those" scopes. A Centerpoint 4-16X40 scope. Upon opening the box, I immediately noted the scope, took it off and replaced it with something more appropriate. The CP went to the junk box in the shop for quite a while. Time passes, I get bored one day and ran onto the CP in the shop and got to thinking what I might do with it. I mounted it on my R10, which I was working on at the time and needed to shoot. What the heck, I just need some crude info and chrono data, it'll work for that, right? After shooting a few groups, I noticed, that I was chrono'ing at 35 yards, not paying a lot of attention to the groups, but I was aiming at a dot on the target just to keep my line over the chrono steady. Well, heck, something like 20 shots in a 3/8" group. Holy cow! Now I'm really curious, so I pull out some targets, calculate the clicks at 35 yards and proceed to box test the CP, it wan't close.....it was PERFECT! As close as I could measure, it was dead on. I continued to crank around, shooting a shot, back to another groups, and back and forth...tiny groups all around. Ok, I'm amazed. I messed with parallax and power settings with no shift in impact. An $89 scope. Did I mention that when I really looked through this scope, it is so clear it's amazing, even at 16X. Now, let's be real, it is not the brightest scope, expecially at 16X, but it's not bad. The view is contrasty til you get above 12X, and the eye box it pretty critical at above 12X, but hey, I have expensive scopes with that problem. Shooting into the sun is also a bit challenging with flare.
At this point, I thought, you know what, this scope has earned it's position on the Royale it had come on. So on it went and sighted in at 35 yards. After a lot of shooting, and amazement, I put the rifle away for a long while, only getting it out once in a while and firing a few shots, then back to the safe.

Lately, there's been some talk of 100 yard shooting and I had tried it the first time with my Brck Sniper .22 and a Hawke AM 30 3-12X, and it got me to thinking about how well the CP tracked. Would it work at 100 yards? Out it came, I did the math, cranked in 18" of elevation and rested the Royale on the bed of my truck, shooting at a orange plastic beer bottle hanging target at 100 yards. BANG! I hit it the first shot. Then 11 out of 12 shots with the bottle swinging from a very gently breeze and from the previous hits. I couldn't best my 11 of 12, but i did repeat it twice. I was shooting into the setting sun, and it was hard to see sometimes and the critical eye box demanded perfection in head placement, but hey, it worked.

So, I have to admit, this is a pink unicorn of a scope. I can't imagine that ever CP 4-16 is this good, but I'm sure amazed at this one. Shooting in a normally lit yard without the sun directly in your face is no problem at all. If I had bought this scope, and at $89 I saw online, that would have to be, the single best dollar-to-quality ratio of any scope made, period.

Traditional Rifle  NLA .20 HW97 Blue Laminate

Since I see some posts about prejudices I thought I

would bring up BBguns and tuning; I have put aside my Pellet guns for a while while I taking a trip into the past and the future,I have been shooting some old and new BB rifles, Like the Daisey 25,99 and 499 Target model,it is a fun break, also I have ordered some "hop up parts" I going to push the limits by installing stronger springs and plunger kits....I have the 99 shooting better now and the 499 is accurate...I am shooting 10yds.. Fun,and fast,. I wonder if anyone else has installed these "hop-up" parts and if anyone else enjoying just plinking with your BB guns? Remember it is all relevant(y)

PCP Rifle  SOLD Vault Clearance continues - .22 Daystate Red Wolf HP R - Pristine Condition

This offering is for a SPAW, Ken Hicks tuned .22 Daystate Red Wolf HP R in very pristine condition. Always one of the most consistent and accurate rifles in my collection, this rifle is in as perfect condition as a "used" rifle can be. It has been babied and has never been taken outside and handled other than on my indoor or deck bench. It shoots the 25.39 gr pellets as accurate as can be imagined.

This rifle originally came with the magazines that were actuated by the mechanical steel plunger. If you will recall, there was an issue with alignment with some of these rifle/magazine combinations. AOA, under warranty, removed and plugged the plunger pin and replaced the magazines with the current flip open magazines, a huge improvement, and it has worked flawlessly since.

As you can see from the power chart included, this rifle is unbelievably consistent. I never could get it to shoot slugs as well as the pellets, but at the ranges I get to shoot (out to one hundred yards), it didn't matter. I have killed several squirrels with it at 85 to 95 yards without a single miss, using the 25.39 Gr series pellets in either the JSB Jumbo Monster Redesigned Pellets, FX pellets, JTS Dead Center or AEA pellets - it doesn't seem to exhibit a brand preference.

At 50 yards, it stacks the pellets into one single hole. It is very quiet and backyard friendly with the Huggett Moderator. I rarely have to charge the battery as it will shoot for months without a battery charge. I generally charge it once every six months to keep the battery in great shape, whether it needs it or not. In short, this rifle will perform "first time, every time." It has never let me down.

On the medium and low power settings, it will shoot the 18 gr pellets extremely well with a very high shot count.

For the rifle only, shipped within the continental US, and payment via PayPal F&F,, the price is $2,000, $900 less than the current new price. It will come with two magazines, the Huggett moderator as shown, a Carm single shot loader, the original manual charger, etc - complete as when I purchased it new.

For the Hawke Model 17420 Sidewinder 6-24x56 SF30 IR FFP scope, with FX No Limit Rings as Shown, add $500 (a perfect match for this rifle). BTW - the dope chart shown on this rifle as mated to the scope will put the pellet dead on at 5 yard intervals from 30 to 100 yards.

For the Accu-Tac bipod as shown, add $275.

Thanks for looking.... DZ

"No airguns allowed here"

Ever been to a shooting range that didn't allow your air gun?

I went to a new range yesterday since my local club is closed on holidays. Went in, asked a few questions, filled out the waiver, paid the cashier.

Then I dropped the question... " Figured I should mention this since some places get a little weird about it... I'm shooting air guns is that ok?". Got an odd look, she paused for a sec, then her gut instinct seemed to kick in and she said "Oh, we don't allow airguns here.". I politely asked why not and she didn't really know, so she offered to call the owner and ask. A couple minutes later she came back with an OK.

Worked out great in this case. Brought my rattler 357 and challenger elite 51. Fun stuff, was banging steel consistently on their 100-150yd targets. Guys out there with their ARs and hunting rifles turning their heads and wondering what the heck I'm shooting 😁.

Another situation where it has been a little weird... my local club has a 300yd range. Never had any issue with airguns on 100yd benchrest but I asked about trying the 300 and I got the response "oh we don't allow AiRgUnS on the 300." I likely just need to talk with someone higher up the chain.

Brocock/BRK  Well I Think I Found It

We all hope to find that one pcp that likes the walmart crosman premium hollow points. A good friend of mine said he a BRK Sniper XR .22 that he was getting rid of or I swayed him to let it go after he said it liked the cphp. So I went and grabbed it and tried it out to see if I really did like them. First was the speed test and with the transfer port wheel on low it got 11fpe, medium was 17fpe and high was 25fpe that is a great range for a backyard buster. Threw my zulus on top and got to zeroing. It wasn't very long and could already tell it was going great with those pellets. So I put together a little video showing how well they did. It's 25y but to do that with unsorted not cleaned or lubed pellets I am very happy.

Accessories  NLA Eberlestock Cherry Bomb Backpack

🤷‍♂️I don’t even know why I bought it lol. It’s a great backpack for a small 24.5 inch pcp.

The Cherry Bomb presents a unique mountaineering aesthetic and minimal profile. It features two main compartments: one “public” and one “private”. In the public compartment, there are organizational pockets, a laptop sleeve, and document sleeve. In the private compartment, there is enough storage to hold a rifle. The main stowage compartment is the perfect length to discreetly carry a broken-down rifle, SBR, or pistol with an overall length of 24.5“.

RAW Rapid  Best Pellet in RAW HM1000x LRT .22

I have a new, unmodified RAW in .22. I read that it is designed/manufactured/tuned at the factory to shoot the 25.39 grain pellets at around 930 fps.....and moa accuracy at 100 yards.

What has everyone else found to be the best ammo for these rifles? Just in the JSB family of 25.39 pellets there are a number of options. Standard mrds, deep base, shallow base, FX branded, etc. Is there one of these that will consistently outperform the others in the RAW?
