Shooting Crosseyed

Have any of you heard the old technique of shooting cross eyed?

My father was a crack shot. He was unbelievable with a rifle. His father was a rifleman and taught him to shoot when he was very small. He was raised during the depression in rural west Texas hunting for what he ate. He was a rifleman in the Korean war and then a “sniper” in the early days of Viet Nam. He was well trained. He hunted every big game animal in the west and a bunch in SE Asia. He guided hunts in Wyoming for years. When he spoke about shooting I listened.

He said that whenever he shot offhand he shot cross eyed. He was trained to do that with iron sights in the military. He would focus on the front bead with both eyes open until his eyes crossed and then “time slowed down”. His movements seemed slower and he could easily time the trigger with his wobble. “It’s as easy as shooting basketballs when your eyes are crossed”.

He said he did the same thing in a scope. But he focused on the target so hard that time slowed. His crosshairs floating in the foreground were more controllable and his trigger timing was better.

I mastered the scope technique pretty quickly. At least to some extent. I wasn’t crosseyed. But in the scope its easy to get an altered state going. An intense target focus will improve trigger timing for sure. I didn’t realize how effective it was until I applied it to iron sights.

Over the years I have shot very little with iron sights. Mainly pistol. And I never really tried focusing that hard on the bead. But when I couldn’t keep a scope on a cheap air rifle I decided to experiment with iron sights. Of course I thought of my father. And immediately wanted to learn how to “shoot cross eyed”.

After some practice and research I can tell you that there IS something to it. There is a point where depth drops away, the entire world is a blur and the only thing in your consciousness is the front post and a blur of the target beyond. Time slows down. As you come across your target in your wobble you have lots of time to initiate the shot.

It really is like basketball. You look for an opening, time your jump and fling the ball. It is MUCH easier to hit your target especially when a lot of movement is involved. I’m convinced this is how some guys hit targets thrown in the air with a rifle.

My observation is that when all your external input is focused on the bead your brain has more time to process movements. It isn’t busy with depth, surroundings, things like that. It processes input faster because it has less to do. Things seem “slower”. You are simply focusing all your brain power on the task at hand by limiting visual input.

We all know how poorly we shoot when we have internal and external input bombarding us. It makes sense if you get rid of ALL input by “crossing your eyes” and intensely focusing its going to help. Especially with chaos around you.

My father didn’t rationalize it much. He just listened to his training and practiced it. And tried to teach it to me. I’m just beginning to understand those lessons.

I understand some guys teach this in combat pistol training. You practice until you come on target “cross eyed” and focusing on the bead. Your target is blurry in the background.

It’s just eye exercises mainly. You could learn it sitting in front of the television and never fire a shot. I believe it would vastly improve accuracy with a revolver.

I still can’t do it “at will”. I struggle to get that focus point sometimes. Sometimes I can’t maintain it through the shot. I’m getting better at it though. If I was 16 again I could probably master it in an hour.

If I do it too much my eyes are hard to get back in focus. My eyeballs are old and lop sided. They probably have all the tread worn off the back from rubbing against my head. I don’t want to push it too hard or I might have a flat.

When things are just right I can shoot more accurately than I could ever imagine. I am absolutely stunned and amazed how effective this technique is.

I’m sure others employ this or some other similar techniques in their routine. Does anyone out there have a shortcut to a zen like state that allows them to time a shot better?

HW/Weihrauch  Hw95 .20 piston seal replacement

Picked up a used 20 cal 95 yesterday in very good condition and came with a few thousand pellets most ftt and a tin of barracudas.
I headed straight to the range and mounted an old nikko stirling I had on another gun and sited in. Barracudas, ftts and jsb all grouped well.
Chronograph showed 7fps variation over 10 shots (699-692) 6 shots were 698.
I noticed it was a little gritty to cock accompanied with a honking noise. Firing cycle very twangy but no loss of sit picture.
Fully stripped the gun degreased an relubed and cocking feels like a completely different gun.
The seal looks worse for wear but is giving really consistent results.

Do I change the seal? If so should I go the red concave seal or green eco seal from custom air seals?

Cheers

HW/Weihrauch  The Whooper - HW77

Hi everyone!

I wanted to post an update to my HW77 journey. This rifle has been a real treat. I replaced my shattered factory spring with a Vortek kit this week. The results are pretty fantastic!

Accuracy did not improve, and I didn’t really expect it to. The rifle has been a very consistent 10 shot - 2.5 moa performer since I got it. That didn’t change all throughout the factory spring’s life, and hasn’t changed now with the Vortek kit.

While I had it apart, it got a cleaning and lube job. It feels like a million bucks again. Tight and slick. The shot report could best be described as a ker-snick! Much improved over the un-shattered factory spring. From the factory, the gun was like holding a baseball bat when a ball hits the tip of the bat. Youch!

Anyways, enjoy some pictures! The group is 5 shots, standing unsupported at 20m.

I am dubbing this one “the Whooper” after the namesake swan, Finland’s national bird.

With a long barrel, like the long neck of a swan, it just seems fitting. In Finnish folklore, it is said that the Whooper is the messenger between the living and the dead. Let’s see if I’ll need to deliver any messages this season!

Thanks for reading, have a great one.

FX  30 caliber PCP..Which one??

So I have decided on the purchase of a 30 PCP. I allready own an FX Crown Contiuum in .25. It does an amazing job but as I have stated in a previous post it seems to lack killing power on woodchucks out to like 125 yards. I am able to hit them but they almost always seem to find their way back into their hole. I know that the FX line is going to put more of a hurt in my wallet, but so far my choices are the FX Crown...Panthera 70mm ...Dynamic express 700mm. The reason for the last two is basically they are more dedicated slug rifles. Also length is not that much of a concern because I usually shoot from a good solid base. Also at this time it seems like Utah Airguns have these ready to go.
So what are your airgunners thoughts on this? Is there others out there that I should consider? The RAW looks like a good choice also.
Your imput would be greatle appreciated!!
Thanks!

I cant unscrew the cylinder from my FEB P44 at high pressures(NEW)

Valve is very hard to unscrew with 150/200bar!

New-ish member from Northern AZ

Hello everyone! I joined this wonderful site about a year ago and read here often. Decided to introduce myself and make my first post!

I am retired, living in Northern Arizona, and very much looking forward to starting down the air gun path. I have enjoyed hunting and competing with rifles and pistols for over 40 years, but other than a bb gun as a child, have never owned an air gun. I no longer hunt, but I am still active in USPSA, reloading, and shooting long range rifle for fun.

I have 15 yards in my basement, 60 yards in my backyard, 300 at my local range, and some steel out to a mile in the national forest. Lots of options.

I have been researching and learning ever day here, there is so much to learn! Some things cross over from firearms, but much does not.

I am looking at .177 and/or .22 PCP rifles, to shoot inside when it is snowing, and outside the rest of the year. I would like to be able to get out to maybe 60 to 100 yards, as I have firearms for longer range.

Most appealing is the ability to shoot at home when I do not feel like packing up and going to the range.

I have seen some of the matches at RIo Salado down in Phoenix. That also is very intriguing! Maybe Field Target or PRS down the road...

The Daystate Deltawolf has been the top contender so far. Not a beginners gun, but I am not afraid to experiment and learn as I go. I have not decided on air tanks and a compressor.
Must decide on caliber, the idea of easily swapping barrels is nice though.

Not decided on anything yet actually, but excited to jump in soon and start a new addiction!

Anyway thanks for the great forum!

Equipment ? yeah !

Outside the basement and under the screen porch is my shooting table . The ground is clay dust and stone and is not level SOOOO ! I am now in the process of leveling the ground and then i have 4 horse mats to put down making a better place to shoot and a lot less dust to track in . (4 mats =8 ft. x 12 FT ) the only downside is ,
I didn't count on the weight of a mat = 97 LBS each , at least they will not blow away .

N/A  New to forum + Question about getting into air pistol 10m

Hi all,

New to the forum. I generally target shoot with .22LR for fun (pistol and rifle), but wanted to explore air pistol also just because it seemed a bit interesting after watching ISSF stuff over the years, and more recently with the hype around the Olympics. It's also a bit easier to wrap my head around the legalities/regulations due to some of the rules in my state (WA), too.

There was a post for a FWB P11 on sale in classifieds here that I was interested in (rcs9250's post), but I can't PM yet, so I was wondering if that's a sufficient enough PCP to start with, or even progress into competition with comparing to what is more commonly seen in comp (i.e. Steyr). I've looked into what targets to buy as well as pellets (R-10 I think?), and since I'm only doing pistol I was gonna stick to hand pumping. I also already go to a range that has air pistol/rifle set ups which is also nice I suppose. Oh and if anyone knows if 7g or 8.2g is a bit better for a FWB P11, that'd be nice to know just in case I'm able to get one.

Thanks for any info.

This Compact Flashlight Puts out 12,000 LUMENS! or 220 hours on Low

This thing has become pretty useful to me. It's a flashlight that puts out 12,000 lumes on Turbo but also runs for hundreds of hours on normal flashlight settings. The WUBAN X1. Here is a full review. ...and if you like pinball, there is a 1 minute pinball tour close-up of Godzilla and Bond at the end (lit by the X1). Thanks for watching! -Nate

Impressive? JSB Match Diabolo Hades .22 15.89

I bought Hades .22 Diabolo 15.89 because it was a recommendation for the Leshiy Classic I recently bought. Folks, so this is 'match'? Many of the pellets have mangled skirts and from the tin that was plastic wrapped sealed, I can't say its handling. I don't know, is this typical of JSB? I might just consider Crosman Premier HP 14.3 amazing when consider uniformity of the entire pellet. Trying a return/exchange and perhaps just a bad batch.

PCP Rifle  SOLD 3 PCP DEAL

I am exiting PCP airguns to focus on springers and archery. I have already sold my Alkin and three other PCP’s and several misc. items. I just want to move them and get it over with.
I am posting the three links below of the three PCP’s. I am looking to sell the three PCP’s for $3100+ shipping. This is a crazy good value. Shipping for the three airguns will probably be a bit less than $100 but am not positive, depending on where you live in CONUS.
This is not a scam. I have sold more than a dozen airguns on this site and have an excellent seller rating. I can provide reference of buyers of other PCP’s I posted on AGN.

Unfortunately I do not have PP or anything like that. Cash, personal check, bank check or USPS Money Order. CONUS ONLY. I have an excellent seller feedback. My posting is 100% accurate. I have zero interest in compromising my excellent seller feedback.
