Diana 54 unknown screw

Hi all!
First post here on the recommendation from a friend who happens to be a member here and we both moderate another forum together.

I recently acquired a Diana 54 Air King T05 in .177. I'm new to this particular model knowing zero about it other than the price was right for some fun - $150. I asked to test shoot the gun prior to purchase and the first shot went off like I expected albeit a lot louder than anticipated. Second shot took some fiddling with getting it to fire. I wiggled the safety, possibly re-cocked (i honestly don't recall) and got the second shot off. That's when I noticed the screw on the table what wasn't there before that second shot. I wound up purchasing it for $100 with that condition and a sloppy cocking lever.

Having poured over the D54 schematics, more specifically the trigger assembly, I just can't put my finger on where this came from. I performed a thorough external inspection and I can't see anything missing from obvious places like front sight, stock mount, trigger guard, scope/base/rings, cocking lever. So my assumption is it came out the gap in the trigger well. Trigger adjustment screw is intact as well. Hmmmmm.....

One suggestion was the scope base screw and I'd tend to agree with that except for the fact I can't fathom how that screw would have been in there and them came out. The scope ring base has it totally covered up.

So..... Any ideas on where this silly thing might have come from?

Here's the screw in question (.177 pellet for reference)

SOLD 500mm custom .22 TJ barrel fitted for FX guns

I haven’t used this barrel for 2 years and don’t really see myself using it. I was told it was a custom hammer forge TJ .22 pellet barrel 500mm machined for FX, the inside looks like mirror and very accurate with all the ammo I put into it. The bore seem very tight so only slugs that seems to shoot well re the .216 sized, .217 slugs are simply way too tight. Very good quality barrel that looked like has been lapped and polished from looking at the mirror finish, crown looks great also. The twist rates looks pretty aggressive from the lands, shot lighter .216 slugs quite well. It does not have the sharp edged lands like LW barrels, almost polygon barrel with rounded lands. Haven’t cleaned the barrel once and it’s clean as whistle.

Looking to get $220 shipped.

Tuning  Because SOME of us really would like to know

Having discussed this many times with different people, Franklink and I came up with a tentative plan and this is the first attempt to try to learn if the BARREL really can make a difference in the wind and if so... why and can it be measured. Now understand, this is going to be a somewhat extended learning experience and things will likely change as it progresses.
I chose this title because some have indicated in other threads that they would rather just shoot and are not interested in WHY things are like they are. If it doesn't interest you... PLEASE feel free to go on to other threads. I welcome input as it's a complicated subject but posting to show your indifference isn't productive.
So...
I chose 177 to start as I have many accurate and proven rifles and chose the 10.3 JSB to be shot in all except one even though it may not be the preferred pellet for some. The exception is a 13 ft lb AA RN10 from the mid nineties because it has proven to hang with the 20 ft lb rifles even though it's shooting an 8.4 @ 850. Now this rifle really is the biggest reason that this whole thing has been on my mind for years but Franklink's USFT and my USFT are big parts of the discussion as well. As I get through this, please keep in mind that the targets were shot carefully, but ultimate accuracy was not the goal because the pellet may not be the best for a particular barrel. I have 13 rifle/barrel combos that are proven capable of winning in FT and several would be competitive in Benchrest.
In no particular order, they are: DS Safari with choked and unchoke polygonal barrels, DS Delta Wolf with 17" standard rifled and 23" choked poly, DS Tsar w unchoked poly, DS CRX ST standard rifled, Air Arms RN10 with 19" standard rifled shooting 8.4s, USFT with 23" choked poly, BSA Goldstar with standard rifled, Air Arms ProTarget with 23" standard rifled, DS Wolverine R with 17" standard rifled, Steyr LG100 with original Steyr standard rifled, and Theoben Rapid 17 with 23" standard rifled.
The first attept was to shoot 25 shots at 50 yards with the same poa through all 25. The hope was to see if some would spread more than others as the wind changed. As you can see in the photos, real difference may be difficult to discern but some, like the USFT had much less vertical and the horizontal was somewhat less as well. Peak wind was likely around 8 mph and the 2 outliers on the USFT were during a couple of these gusts. The wind varied pretty much 360 degrees on both cards and is responsible for much of the vertical as all of these are quite consistent.

Now I had a TOUGH time editing the LabRadar data as it is SLOOOOWWWW with many glitches but the process was to delete the faulty data so as not to skew the results . The faulty data results when the tracking process goes awry and there is bad or no data in some of the yardage captures. This was why I chose to do 25 shots... to have plenty remaining after the editing. Please note that this was not an attempt to manipulate data, just get rid of faults.
So @Franklink took the spreadsheet data and processed it for me to give this list of rifles based on best to worst bc. There are some things to note but at this point, I need to sign off and will post more as I can. If you see me at EBR, definitely say hello and give me your thoughts.

In Franklink's spreadsheet, there are 2 entries for the USFT. Note above that 1 is at 923 ft/sec average and the other is at 890 ft/sec average. It's pretty interesting that this corroborates the general wisdom that is disseminated on this site about 890 ft/sec being about the best place for tradeoff between velocity and bc. Also, I intended as much as possible for the rifles to be in the 880 to 900 ft/sec range but some, like the Tsar, were not able to get there and I did not try to tune any extensively. Mostly, this was just where they were from last competition use. Also, the Goldstar data is missing from the current spreadsheet but suffice to say, it was quite good and maybe upper middle of the pack. This was one of my LabRadar fights. With regard to that, there are 2 target sheets because somewhere along the way, all my first files were lost. I tried to center up the shots on the second one better but the wind was blowing quite a bit so not perfect. So I shot 325 shots for record plus sighters on the cards and the LabRadar gives the results in a .csv form that I will have to convert to be able to post. I will try to do this soon as it is interesting.

Another interesting thing is that mostly, the polygonal bores were at the top. Two very strange results were that BlueBaby (ProTarget - wife's previous comp rifle) was so high with an HW standard rifled barrel and that the CRX was so low with a LW standard rifled barrel... both 12 groove. Also, the ProTarget, RN10, Steyr, and USFT had direct loaded pellets with air coming directly from behind rather than below. The remainder are all bolt inserted. Note that the Theoben is an HW standard rifled and the Steyr is the original factory hammer forged standard rifled barrel (absolutely like a mirror inside).

I also wanted to add that some of these really stand out in firing behavior. Overall, I'd give most pleasant to the Wolverine with the Safari at this power very close behind. The Steyr seems to have the fastest "snap" of a shot cycle with RN10 and ProTarget close. The USFT and Theoben seemed slowest by my perception. It was pretty nice sitting down and revisiting these gems since I mostly have been focused on the Delta Wolf for a while.

Slugs and LabRadar data

I have .30 RAW tuned around 70fpe for 44.75 JSBs.

Out of general ignorance and the long habit in airgunning of buying ammo just to see how it shoots, I ended up here with these various slugs. In terms of pure precision, the JSB 44.75 is still winning. But I borrowed a Labradar to collect some velocity and BC data to better inform myself on just how good the ballistics might be with the "right" slug.

Test method: Labradar, 100y range, 56F, breezy, rainy. Airgun / microphone trigger for the Labradar, velocities reporting at 10, 20, 30, 60, and 80y. (Yes, those uneven distances bother me too but I didn't notice until later). 5-10 shots per projectile.
Nielson 47, 51, 55gr. These are from 2019 so I don't know if they match the .300 or .303 they're making now. They mic .300 though.
JSB Hades and Exact 44.75.
FX Hybrid 44.5.
AVS .3013 Cup base, 51, 55.

BC was calculated in Chairgun using initial velocity and adjusting BC until velocity at distance agreed with my measurements. Velocity is an average of 5-20 shots, with a few measurements omitted due to obvious bad results. These occurred primarily at the longer ranges and I'm not sure if it's from the projectile tumbling or from the Labradar losing the projectile among the raindrops. I will make sure it's not raining if I run these tests again.

Observations:
- JSB Exact shot better than published BC. JSB Hades doesn't have a published BC but it's significantly lower than the Exact.
- The JSB Exacts were washed and sorted (44.70 to 44.79gr). All other projectiles were straight from the tin.
- Slug BCs are well below published values. My RAW is not particularly a slug gun so may be everything. But it highlights the value of testing BC's for yourself.
- Time of flight for the pellets is very close to time of flight for slugs of similar weight. But BC is drastically different. (This begs the question of whether wind drift is more directly affected by BC or by time of flight.)
- From what I've read, 70fpe is below the optimal velocity range for slugs.
- Not clear if the NSA slugs have changed in 3 years, but I pulled the nearest BC data from their site today.
- It occurs to me I've never cleaned this barrel. It doesn't have many shots through it, but that may not matter.
- I was mostly unable to see the accuracy of these shots owing to the conditions and me using an 8.5x11 target at 100y on a well-shot backer board. The AVS though seemed to shoot well and so I got extra shots at the 50y target with them. Accuracy is not one ragged hole like the Exact, but close enough to hold promise.

Nuisance Fox

We've had a few foxes in my area starting problems, and acting aggressively towards the neighborhood cats. Last night before bed I heard a commotion outside my bedroom window and managed to get a shot off from about 20 yards. The 25.4gr pellet caught him square between the eyes and just dumped him on the spot. Hopefully he was the worst offender in the area and things cool off for a bit.

Q

I'm riding this to any air gun manufacturer the Seneca Aspen air gun has a built-in pump I thought it would be me if you could make a built-in pump but like a pump shotgun so when you air it up you're caulking it back just like a pump action shotgun that way the gun would look great and also be more like a real firearm and I believe if you would make it in a 35 Cal 45 Cal and 50 caliber or at least a 45 and 50 caliber it would fly off the shelves because it would have a built-in pump and it would be like pumping a pump action shotgun someone please produce this because the Seneca Aspen air gun is cool but it has no power and it doesn't look that good with that handle the way they have it.

Leshiy 2 Crossman premiers

View attachment IMG_20221003_163802.jpgDid some shooting with the L2 today testing what velocity the premiers like. Set the reg pressure to 95 bar and that got me around 695-700 FPS. This was at 35 yards sitting supported with unsorted pellets(pretty sure I had a few dented skirts if the fliers are any indicator. With this tune in 22 cal I can get around 220 shots per fill with the bottle and 70 with the original cylinder.
If I sorted pellets I bet I could get this size of group out to 70 yards. If you're wondering if the L2 will shoot the cheap stuff I'll say that mine will. I forgot to mention all groups are 8 shot groups.

Please rate my planned purchase set up

I will be ordering my first PCP shortly and I would like a little feedback on the complete set up please.

FX Dreamline Lite with the 500mm barrel in .22
FX's version of the DonnyFL
Element Helix with Sportmatch Rings
Omega 75 cu ft tank

I mostly plan on plinking with it but I'm open to pesting. I have no real interest in slugs other than trying them out. I like to tweak and dicker around with things but can't afford an Impact and not sure I need all that power in the first place. Also that leaves headroom for potential purchases down the road and there is just something downright appealing about the Dreamlines.

Anyone feel the same?

I come to this forum to get a break from the "real world". The state of mankind nowadays, with it's ever increasing lack of civility, waning tolerance of diverse points of view & social media's destructive effect on the ability for critical thinking has always left me grateful that, on this forum, we come together to share something WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON, our love of airgunning. This IS NOT a politics forum!!! (The rules & regs spell that out specifically). So people, for the love of God or whatever you believe in, can we PLEASE keep the POLITICAL references OUT of this forum (whether it be in a post or AVATAR!) Let's share the love of this activity that can bring us together & NOT something that has the ability to polarize us even further. We ALL have our opinions of REAL WORLD issues ( but you know what they say about opinions being like A-holes) and those should be shared on a different type of forum. Let's try to keep THIS forum about what brings us together. THANKS!

177 Delta Wolf advice?

Finally received my 177 Delta Wolf. Got a chance to shoot it today and so far so good. I was hoping any other 177 Delta Wolf owners would share what heavy pellet / slugs have worked for you and the setting your using them at? This would be 12gr and heavier! I tried out some Zan 13gr, howler 12gr and JSB 13gr with decent results at 50 yards. I would really like to know what has worked for others. If any one has had luck running the H&N 16gr out of there delta wolf would really be interested in hearing about that! Thanks for the help.

Pesters vs Papershooters....

I came into this sport a year and a half ago Ijust wanting to shoot paper, I just liked shooting. As I started seeing people using their airguns to pest, I thought , maybe I too can do that? So I started reaching out to farmers. Its been about 3.5 months since I started doing this and I had gone through a handful of rifles early on but slowly fine tuned my collection for tasks rather than curiosity .... This weekend with back to back pesting days on two separate permissions I think something finally clicked....

My setups all do their job well, they bring enjoyment to me while paper shooting as well but now I am shooting paper to hone my pesting skills. I don't have as strong a desire to try this and buy that but finally hit that blissful moment where my collection truly pleases me.

I do think that if I hadn't got into pesting that this wouldn't be so and I would just want to continue to buy and try everything to change up my bench days as the bench days get redundant ( if that makes sense to you?)

I still long for a .30 cal for bigger pests and having used a thermal for a brief bit , I'd like to upgrade my NV to a thermal but thats really it.

Anyways, just figured id open up another thread for discussion to see if others found themselves in a similar situation at one point in their airgun journey.

Impact Mk2 for a newbie?

Hi everyone, as a newbie to the sport, but not to firearms, I wanted to get your thoughts on me purchasing a used Impact M2. I was reading a thread here about them selling for $1200 - $1400.

My concern is that it'll be too "complicated" for a newbie. Should I get something "simpler"?

Aslo, what's involved in changing calibers? Magazine, barrel, anything else?
