Meet Ranger Dick

I'm thinking many of you remember Ranger Rick when growing up... A friend to all the "furry forest friends". I realized recently he's still around, well... I have dubbed my Brocock Ranger XR - "Ranger Dick". 'Cause he ain't friendly to any of da "forest friends" or any of the critters around farm fields, or back yards, etc etc... 🤣

You may have noticed a few replies where I have added my two cent... Well, actually - 3 1/2 cents, with inflation and all... 😳 Anyway, I thought I would share a little more about my experience so far with my Ranger.

I have had mine for a little more than months now and I really like this little rifle. Yeah, I have a couple pet peeves with it, but one must remember what the Ranger is intended for.

Peeve #1 - The folding stock arrangement. It rattles so annoyingly, that I just had to do something about it. Most of the rattle is the stock itself. I'm wondering if Brocock is using a "commercial spec" stock even though the "tube" is mil-spec. So, I measured the "tube" just to be sure and swapped the stock out with a "Magpul MOE SL® Carbine Stock – Mil-Spec"... Ahhh, much better. This stock has a couple spring steel straps in it to snug things up (I have used these before) and with Magul's quality products... Now, just the folding hing moves a bit. Maybe I should go measure the supplied stock to see what the tube opening is? 🤔

Peeve #2 - the slop in the hinge. Oh wait I covered that in "peeve #1. 🤣 Really I am being nit picky.

This Brocock Ranger XR is extremely accurate. I experimented with 15.89's, 18.1 and some H&N 21 grainers (from what I see here I'll give some CPHP's a try too). This Ranger shoots 'em all very accurately... As long as I don't drink too much coffee. Speed of course changes some; I need a new chronograph - I have had bad luck with those "reflective" POS's... They didn't stand up to my tantrums very well either. 😁

Anyway, The Ranger XR is a great little rifle. Accurate out to 50 yards easily. And I have "knocked down" Starling sized birds out to 79 yards (best so far).

So, I'll quit rambling here and attach a few pixs, including my Ranger with the new stock.

Happy "pesting" ya'll.

Mag-fed springers - good idea when shooting PBA?

Hi,

I am looking into getting my first .22 air rifle, after my Daisy 880 is showing a lack of power against the critters that destroy our garden - clearly need something in the range of 15 to 20 fpe. However, due to intending to use it for pest control purposes + backyard target shooting and having neighbors, it also shouldn't be too loud, so some kind of noise suppression is necessary and for this reason .177 won't do, as I'd have to go supersonic there.

And when I look around for things that fit my budget, it turns out that there are some really cheap break barrel options (e.g. Hatsan AirTact, Gamo Wildcat Whisper), and the next group appears to be mag-fed break barrels or underlevers.

So I am wondering, are these even an option for me? One issue is that I want to minimize the amount of lead in my garden, and thus would prefer shooting mostly PBA at targets.

Now I am aware that some pellets in the lead-free area have rather odd shapes and sizes - e.g. the Crosman PowerShot Gold Flight is extremely long and barely fits in my Daisy 880 breech, and the Gamo Luxor Cu is just crazy (BTW: not recommending, it behaves aerodynamically just the way it looks), I would assume that I will get problems with the magazines rather early than late. But as one example, with Gamo I can't get the Maxxim or Fusion noise suppression and the recoil reducing rail without also getting the magazine.

So I wonder, can some or all of these also be fed without using the mag, if necessary because either my mag broke or the pellets are simply too big? Or is that impossible or dangerous? Does this differ between manufacturers, or if it's a breakbarrel, I can just use it with the mag removed and insert pellets into the breech by hand or pellet pen? If this does not work conveniently, I can at least already strike out anything with a mag from my list (and might then go with the Hatsan AIrTact, as it also has open sights so the scope isn't a single point of failure, and if it breaks, it wasn't expensive anyway).

Shoebox F10 frustration.......ordered a Yong Henger

Well, my little F10 went from Hero to zero REALLY quick.

Check out post #12 here....

Forgot to mention that the bearing went out on the fan in the midst of all this, so had to replace the little computer fan too.

Finally got it to build pressure after trouble-shooting multiple leaks on the hard line connection to cylinders, which ultimately took some of the yellow teflon tape to remedy.

After all that, pressure built up to around 4100psi, and then it imploded again. Not literally, just mechanically. Simultaneously the: retaining washers for the connecting bar went flying, the connecting bar itself launched a few feet, the bushing for the upper cylinder rod slipped out of it's home again, causing the connecting block to bend the right support column, AGAIN. I was able to bend it back once, but aluminum only bends so many times before it snaps......

Gathered up the pieces and found the oil impregnated bushings on the connecting bar are shot. Luckily they're a wear part so it didn't oval out the holes in the connecting bar. Looks like they can be had from Mcmaster-Carr.

Obviously, I've got things all out of alignment at this point, but not sure what to do to get them all happy again.

I've got a parts request out to OCO labs and can't do much til I hear back from them. Thinking of a new crank arm and connecting bar.....if they can be had. I'd like to get er running again, but also sick enough of it that I just dropped some coin on the Yong Heng, "hardback" non-set pressure variety. I spent a few hours comparing Ebay versus Amazon as a source and ultimately settled on buying from Amazon retailer, "smarketbuy" partly on @Gerry52 s recommendation. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0829HBRPD?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Clicked on the $14 coupon to get it down to $256 pre tax and $293 post tax, and also sprung for the 3 year protection plan for $34. All said, $327 and supposedly will have it by the end of the week. Yes, I consider it disposable.

Spent a bit of time looking at the GX compressors but my goal is to be able to fill large tanks, and it seems like the GX stuff is not liquid cooled, and directed more at the gun filling market. I don't think the Yong Heng is intended to be used for filling large tanks either, but I found enough reports of guys filling tanks in short bursts that I'm going to try also. Seems like a run time of 10-12 minutes and then a cool off of 30 minutes, repeating as many times as necessary, has been working for a fair # of AGN members. Will know for myself shortly.

The really frustrating thing here is that I consider myself fairly proficient in dealing with mechanical issues. I've diagnosed and successfully fixed problems with dishwashers, dryers, washers, fridges, stoves, tractors, vehicles, small gas engines (generators, weedeaters, lawnmowers, etc), etc. When something breaks or otherwise quits doing what it's supposed to, I'm the take-it-apart-and-try-to-fix-it-before-just-buying-another-one type. . After a couple days and too many hours worth of effort, the F10 sure has me stumped though.

I was hoping that F10 would get me a decade of good use, and that's why I originally chose it, but right now it's not looking like it will. Luckily I got in at the $500 price a few months before Tom Kaye shut his doors, and since my local place charges $15 per fill, and then another couple bucks worth of taxes, I've more than paid for the Shoebox by avoiding all those nearly $20 fills for the last 4 years. On that same basis, the $327 for the Yong Heng will have paid for itself in about 6 months, if it lives that long! And if the warranty gets me replacements for 3 years, or even a refund, it will more than pay for itself.

This post isn't meant to be a WTS listing, but notice to you Shoeboxers, if I can't get it running again, there may be an F10 parts donor on the market real quick. Will have to decide if I want to chop shop it and sell parts separately, or one fell swoop sell the whole thing to one buyer. Will try to get it pumping away first.

Maverick help, please!

I need some help! I have a .22 Maverick Compact. Regas at 105-73, shooting 15.89 FX pellets at 871-ish avg pretty regularly. PW at 7 and ihs at 3 1/4 turns.
BUT…….on almost every mag I shoot I’ll
Get 1 or 2 shots(out of 18) that shoot slow-in the 850’s. Accuracy is very good, under 1MOA. I don’t select pellets or weigh them.
I know- “who cares if accuracy is good?”. But I am a bit OCD so just wondering…..what is going on?

Can anyone hypothesize what’s happening?
Thanks in advance for your help!!

AEA Zeus 72 cal Makeover - Pic Heavy

So allow me to lay down some facts of the couple month long affair with my recently acquired Zeus Gen 2 in the one and only 72 caliber.

Fact #1: It's expensive to feed. The majority of guys who own this rifle, are not going to plink a ton with it. Hunt in some states, sure, but in general, this is a close range, "what the heck can I obliterate with a 1300 grain projectile" kind of weapon. $1.50 of lead and $1.00 of air per shot doesn't make you want to blow through 50 slugs in a day.

Fact #2: it isn't a dream to shoot. (not to be confused with the absolute dream of what happens after you shoot it) The Zeus weighs about 10000lb in it's 32" barrel configuration. The trigger is single stage and probably 10lb to break. The stock is ugly and the cheek rest is so low, you'd have to have three chins for it to be usable.

Both these facts considered, the 72 cal Zeus is the epitamy of a party trick. It's the iconic, "hey man, wanna shoot my pellet gun" kinda thing. You hand it to someone, their eyes bulge, they explode in laughter, etc. It makes anyone a kid at Christmas.

So, I decided to improve the shooting experience a bit!

Bring out. The stripper.
