An epic day of air gunning. Really epic.

I have been having a rough year when it comes to leisure time. I just have not had any. I decided that this weekend one day would be for me and the Airguns.
Today was the day and I invited a good friend who had shown interest in the air guns.
The weather was great, about 80 degrees and very light winds. At first the squirrels were reluctant and shooting was sparse. As they day wore on the shooting got fast and furious.
I set my friend up with my 22 cal M3 shooting NSA 27.5’s. Gave him the walk through on operating the gun and stayed right with him through the first magazine. He kept his shots to 50 yards and closer and as the day wore on he began stretching the legs on the M3. His longest shot was around 145 with several others around 120 yards.
Then I drug out my Panthera. It was the maiden hunting trip for the gun. I have converted the gun to a front bottle gun and all I will say is that it exceeded my expectations.
We shot a lot today and it was nice to share the day and the field with a good friend. Shooting was fast and furious at times steady at others.
I have been shooting ground squirrels for almost 45 years and this day stands out as the best I have ever had. Between the Panthera‘s performance, the high volume shooting, time with a friend and yeah I have made a convert to our wonderful sport. We parted company with him taking my Maverick compact 22, a tin of JSB 18.13’s and my small air tank. Told him to have a great time and get used to the gun before he went off the rails on an M3.

Its THAT time of the year again.

So it’s spring again. It’s THAT time of the year again.
After another long hard winter, when everything is wet damp frozen or chilly. Everything is muddy and it clings to your feet and sneeks in the house. Plants are dormant, animals struggling to survive, stealing themselves against the cold, while every moment waiting and hoping for the warm rays of spring.
But it’s spring now. It’s finally arrived. The warm sunshine beating back the chill, and THEN it’s that glorious explosion of life!
There’s a myriad of plant’s and bird life that all spring into action. Each riding that wave of energy that was held dormant all winter. All gracing this beautiful planet we call home with their colors and songs, while running a race with time to raise their clutch, or bloom and set seed, or protect that fawn from the roving coyote that is also seeking to feed its young. All part of that divinely inspired cycle that keeps going and going until it doesn’t any more.
Yes! It that time of year again. The wood ducks are hatched and the young are now swimming the river behind their mothers trying not to get eaten by the stripers that are also now running. The turkeys are done with their spring mating ritual and most of the young are now hatched. Most of the does have dropped their fawns or are dropping them now. The bucks new antlers are out past their brow tines. Most of the farmers crops are planted and many are cutting their first cutting of hay. The crappie and white bass are hitting and the smallmouth are on their beds. LIFE ABOUNDS!
Friends, if you’re like me your love of airguns stems first from your love of nature. If you’re like me you thrill at this cycle of life each time it happens.
Stop and let it soak in. We only get so many of these Here.

Diana, Not sure?

I’ve been eye balling these three rifles. I would appreciate a few opinions. All are .22 cal. Models 48, 350 magnum premium and 460 magnum. I have a 460 magnum premium .177. Wish it were .22.
Are they reliable?
Which one would you recommend or none and why?
I have no problem buying a FWB or a Weihrauch or an Air Arms. I was going to cherry pick a few Diana’s if they’re worthy. Crow

Brocock Atomic / Ranger XR thoughts and testing.

I recently sold my Leshiy 2 .25 / 250mm and Crosman 1720 and bought a .22. Brocock Ranger XR from Airguns of Arizona.

First --- I had a great experience with AoA. Really awesome customer service and patience answering questions for a couple weeks before I pulled the trigger.

I wanted the robustness and extremely small folded size of the L2 and the accuracy of the 1720 in one package, and I was willing to sacrifice semi auto. The LW barrel of the Ranger XR coupled with their well established XR action seemed to be a match, and the accessories the Ranger comes with meant I would be "all in" with the initial purchase. The ability to mount a light on a side rail specifically was important to me for night time pest duty. I also wanted to move to hand pumping --- this is a personal preference thing but the small cylinder and fundamental efficiency of the Ranger was appealing.

20230527_161952.jpg

First, the bad --- The ranger isn't a perfect gun. The pressure gauge is in the wrong spot. In 2023, I shouldn't need to violate fundamental gun safety rules to check my pressure. Second, the safety is inside of the trigger guard --- the safety itself is great, positive, clicky, etc, but don't make me put my finger inside the guard to go in safe. Third and final --- there's no double loading prevention which is a minor quibble but I have done it twice in the ~2k rounds I've got through the gun.

Now, the good: The fit and finish on the gun is great, it is extremelly robust --- my 1720 always made me feel like I was going to break it. The surface treatment is a mystery, but feels good to the touch and I think will hold up well. The trigger was great for me out of the box. It's likely heavier stock than some people like, but the second stage breaks crisply and consistently and I would never be nervous about it in the field. Fundamentally, the gun is more accurate than I am. Out to 25 yards it is literally hole in hole, and if I really pay attentuon I'm getting slightly un 1/2 inch 11 shot groups center to center at 30 yards. I did extensive testing of a wide variety of pellets at a variety of hammerspring adjustments with the port wide open. The final tune --- JSB 16gr right around 700fps ended up being exactly the settings that AoA sent me thr gun at. There's some hilarity there, and I enjoyed the process, but it truly was a "remove from package and go" gun. Here's the test target AoA sent me, followed by one of my final tuning targets. My groups are 11 round full magazine groups at 30 yards from a Caldwell Turret. Top 2 are final tune, bottom 3 a little hotter. The gun shoots like those two groups down to about 185 m/s.

20230528_103717.jpg

20230528_103843.jpg

The hammer spring is easily adjusted from the back of the gun, folded open, with an allen key. While these adjustments arent perfectly repeatable, it isn't bad. One improvement would be more travel on that adjustment screw --- you've only got about one full turn and a bit more would make it less fiddly I think.

Thoughts on the Ranger acessories package: For my usecase, the $400 was well spent. The tiny little 0dB absolutely makes this gun backyard quiet. A thread protector is included as well. The folding mechanism locks up TIGHT --- the only play is in the adjustable buffertube stock itself and very, very minor. I needed side picatinny rails for a night light and likely a laser for sub 10 yard pesting eventually. Bottom rail holds my bipod adapter. The AR stock feels like a high quality one.

Thoughts on testing: I originally was going to post a whole slew of target pictures here. My testing regime was to lead in at 15 yards with two mags when I swapped ammo, verifying that I was solidly on target, and then do 5 11 shot mags from the knee down.

The TLDR is as follows:

As @L.Leon has said, it likes Crosman Premieres. Walmart special CPHP are about 3/4 inch groups at 30 yards right at the knee, but widen at slower speeds. CP Ultra Magnum 14.3 domed are right around 1/2 inch with a flyer every 20 rounds or so widening that group to 3/4. They widen quickly at slower speeds. If you are price sensitive or shoot a LOT, you're in luck becausw this gun loves cheap, widely available ammo.

16 grain JSB were the best in the end, ties with 18 grain JSB right at and under the knee. The differentiator for me was that the 16grs shot considtently from ~214 m/s (700fps) on down to about 170 m/s while barely widening. Crosman ammo and the 18grs widened quickly.

The other three ammos in the running were RwS Super Points and Polymag Shorts which were about as accurate as CPHP, and Norma Golden Trophy Heavy (17gr) which had a narrow sweet spot where they shot similar to JSBs.

Big disappointments were JSB 13s and 14s and H&N Match (Including thr Daystate branded Kaisers.) Thr Kaisers are BEAUTIFUL ammo visually, very consistent, but were shooting ~1.25 inch groups at 30 yards for me. The lighter weight JSB domes were similarly wide.

Anyways, I'm very happy with the gun, and with my LPVO and green Streamlitr, I can get 1 inch 11 shot groups in the middle of the night. The gun is tough, folds up small enough for any bag, and is a pleasure to shoot. I don't think I'm gunna have a starling or night time snake problem this year.

Yard sale marauder fun!

So Saturday a week ago I was driving home after a hard week when we passed a yard sale. I glanced at it and noticed some guns- one that looked like it had to be a benjamin marauder. Now mind you I was in no shape to be buying another airgun, I was waiting for the notos to arrive at the time. But ive got to stop 🛑. It won’t cost anything to look 👀. So I walk up to it and sure enough, a gen 2 .22 marauder synthetic, brand new box and paperwork included. Never been shot.
WELL!
So I look at some other things he’s got, buy a few things, and as I’m “about ready to walk away” I ask him;” hey whataya want for this”. After explaining that it was a PCP airgun and that it was a 600 dollar gun he said he’d take 250 for it.
GULP!
I said I’d do 200, and prepared to walk away.
I did, with the marauder under my arm.
So I bring it home and start shooting it. I’m pleasantly surprised, they’ve improved this over the gen 1. It’s quieter, much tamer shot cycle and more efficient. Great shot count too. GREAT!
So I’ve been seeing here on agn how some have been doing their own diy spray paint hydro-dip. I really like the looks of that stuff. I’m gonna try that on my cheap yard sale marauder.
So after watching a bunch of youtube videos and a visit to the hardware store to get the spay paint I go ahead and try it. The first try didn’t come out as good as i liked it. Neither the second. But after three try’s below is what it looks like. I guess I can live with that.
Now to let it cure awhile, get a scope mounted and sighted in! I wonder if I can tune it up and get it to shoot 23 gr. NSA’s?

Unsolvable Notos Problems

I am not sure if others have had this problem but I was at the public range the other day and met a fellow air gunner. He had a very nice setup and some wonderfully made P-Rods with some custom tuning. We shared some stories and really hit it off. I had my chronograph out and was testing my Notos at 50 yards against a paper target. He saw my results and asked what tuning I had done to my Notos.

Long story short it kind of broke down from there when I told him it was stock and I only spent $260. I am not sure if the sun was in his eyes or a piece of dust but I thought I saw him tear up a little.

The Notos is a problem :(

Tuning  Just to test the skill of my machinist

Although the barrel holder is a technical part that should be made on CNC machine or through casting.

Just to check the expertise of my machinist I showed him a barrel hold of M3 and asked if he can make one like this.

He confidently said that he can make it on his ordinary manual laith machine.

I gave him the sample.

A few days latter he gave me the part and I am amazed on his workmanship.

Below is the video showing his made part just to share his skill.

Bhaur

Notos getting squirrely

Have I mentioned this gun rocks?

Ok, I digress... bagged a couple early morning nutters. Opening day here in MO, but these were here at the house. I might go later if the bugs clear out and the honey do list is done.

Ok, so first squirrel I noticed in my front tree, she was walking a branch slowly, and sniffing/licking it. I think following the males scent trail. I hadn't seen him yet, but I sent a 21 grain cuda into her neck and spine. She dropped DRT, and not a pass thru...

PERFECT. All that energy dumped into her and it was about a 20 yard shot. I went and retrieved her, and she's a good size rat, gunna cook her later. I barely got back to my porch, and I hear the male scratching around.

He was definitely aware something happened, but it was such a quiet shot, all I heard was the thud of the pellet. This guy was all over for a bit, but then he settled down and came down to the base where she had landed.

He kept bobbling around, but I finally just took a quarter vital shot, and he dropped with just a little roll and twitch. Hit him right front shoulder, and it exited in front of left leg. Soon as I rolled him over, a certain AC/DC song popped into my head!

Good luck on the hunt everyone!

  • Question
Where to buy a 3lt tank?

I am looking for a shop that has 3 lt tank and valve for charging air guns. Went through all the usual sources. Pyramid air, Utah airguns, high pressure pneumatic, Air tanks for sale, AoA, etc.
I really don’t want to buy from Amazon, rather support an airgun shop.
I see some 100 cu in ones which are a little too small then jumps right to 74-100 cubic feet . Nothing in between.
I want to use my Hill compressor without putting too much load on it for each charge.
3 liters seems to be a good amount for enough charges for 3-6 card competition.

3/4" tube scopes

Stumbled across this and figured id post them for guys looking for a 3/4 tube scope . Seems to claim lifetime warranty .. who knows?

Anyway 3/4 tube and rings that may fit a old multi pump or somthing ..

The stars finally aligned

It was a comment I'd made several times in regards to always wanting to add both a Beeman R1 and a Beeman R10 in .20 cal to the R7 and R9 I already have. Not long after I said it the last time, I got a PM that simply said when the stars finally align, PM me, I have your rifle.
Fast forward a couple months, more saving in the gun fund and my girlfriend asking if I'd like a little help since an anniversary present she'd planned went bust when whatever she was trying to buy me got discontinued (she still won't say what it was). I PM'd the gentleman to ask if I was close, he gave me a number he thought was very fair and I agreed and this arrived in Friday's mail.
Mint condition, 1989 built, Santa Rosa Beeman R10 .20 caliber. I don't have enough Thank You's to give @kingfisher61 for that PM or for selling it me and beyond humbled he'd trust me to be it's next caretaker, but I'll do my best to try.
Thank You, JC aka @kingfisher61.

Shot My First FT Match

Tacoma Rifle and Revolver Club (University Place, WA) hosted its second FT match of the 2023 season today. I got to shoot this match and finally learned what it is like. Got lots of good pointers from the experienced club members and other shooters at this match.

Thanks to Dave Brown for all the efforts in organizing and the pre-match prep work needed to put this event on.

If anyone in the Tacoma Washington area want to shoot in a very professionally and competently conducted match, contact Dave via email: [email protected]

ATN X-Sight 5: Why Has Thou Forsaken Me?

If you purchase ATN X-SIGHT 5, you have a nickname that you may not be aware of.

Beta Tester.

But after spending (wasting) a considerable amount of my Saturday afternoon, I think a more appropriate term would be Alpha Tester, or dare I say sucker.

Please don't take what I'm about to say as arrogance, but I do product development for a living, as a Sr. Software Engineer and Product Owner. If I let a product go to production in this state, I'm certain, I'd be looking for a new job by lunchtime.

Listen to the long list of problems:

  • RAV Calibration doesn't work in most cases. I was literally banging on the butt of my rifle until my hand hurt to try and get a reading to register. After several reboot sequences and lock ups, I got one reading to register once, but not enough to get RAV to calibrate.
  • RAV doesn't work either. This isn't new to ATN, they didn't even use their own scopes to generate the 240p fps marketing videos, as the video is not from the perspective of the shooter. I guess they think we are just stupid for them to even try that one.
  • Audio doesn't consistently record in all video resolutions. Only a few seconds of audio is recorded in all modes except for the mid quality 60p mode. This is a rookie mistake, and probably turning off power to the mic pre-amps and they are being powered by the filter capacitors for a few seconds.
  • Video quality is okay, but just okay, not great. This is because they will record video in 4K resolution, but the sensor is only slightly bigger than 4K, which means that they are doing lossy interpolation, and making pixels up based on a nearest neighbor average or some similar filtering algorithm. But if you switch the video resolution to 1920ish, you still have soft quality because now they do line skipping of the sensor instead of down sampling. Ideally, to do digital zoom, like most all digital scopes that do not use a variable optical zoom system, the sensor needs to be a higher resolution than the delivered video at max magnification. This ain't that, not even close. They would need a 40MP sensor to do 4x base magnification and still ship 4K that is real detail.
  • The number one rule of product development is be careful what features you support, because you will have to include them for eternity. ATN must didn't get the memo, because you can no longer play back video or review photos in their new flagship
  • The headlining feature of generate your own reticle is nice. It would be nicer if imported reticles persisted after a power cycle.
  • Just to show how bad this firmware is, we are once again given a product that can't keep time. I had a Sony Walkman that managed to keep time even after Y2K, so ATN, whatever you're doing, you're doing it wrong.
  • Overall lack of effort. Icons are present the first time you enter a menu, but the second time, the icon is missing, or even worse stacked on top of another icon. I was at the range for 3 hours and was forced to do a hard reboot 3 times, so I guess they have some consistency in some ways.
  • ATN Connect 5 app is suppose to be a major upgrade. Too bad the app isn't even available in the Google Play Store. How could you mess up this release?
  • Sold me an SD- Card that goes with a scope billed (as another headline feature) that it records 4K video, but the SD-Card isn't rated to record 4K video. That's petty. You'd be better off not even offering cards at all than cards that will cause recording to fail. Are you purposely trying to generate support calls? If so, congratulations 🎊, you finally succeeded in a release goal!
My comments may seem like I hate ATN, and that could not be further from the truth!
20230526_150449.jpg

They did a significant size and weight savings compared to the X-SIGHT 4K Pro with ABL. The numbers on paper are minor, but very significant when you swap from one scope to another.

ATN, why has thou forsaken me?

I have supported you, promoted you, hell, I've even been an evangelist for you! You have the best feature set of every digital scope around, but once again, you failed your customer commitment to delivering a quality product. A product I personally paid over $1300 for. Your biggest complaint with the X-SIGHT 4K Pro line was poor quality firmware, and instead of rectifying that issue, you exceeded the poor quality of your efforts past.

I don't work for free. I mean, who can afford to do that? But I feel like I just did unpaid work as an ATN Quality Control technician. ATN, I have some straight up advise for you:

Fire whoever green lit this release on both the engineering side and the business side. You would have been much better served to ship a quarter late than release trash to the market. You only get one chance to show this would be so much better than the X-SIGHT 4K, and you just blew it. Guess what else, the market isn't standing still. PARD, Sightmark and others are releasing solutions with integrated Ballistic Calculators, which is the reason I was attached to you in the first place.

It's best you release firmware to address these issues with all deliberate speed, or when the word gets out how ATN messed up yet again, I don't think the market will be so kind when other products are delivering when you can't.

Actual Shot Count Impact Compact 22 300cc Bottle?

Planning to shoot Hades and light slugs both in the range of 900-1050fps. My setup will be stock other than a Huma pin probe and Huma transferport. If I can Id like to run the lighter 300cc bottle on this one, since its so much lighter. Thanks
