I’m an airgunning failure.

I sometimes feel I am letting the airgun community down, certainly the airgun industry.

I have been ogling a few quality PCP rifles – Daystate, BRK, Air Arms & FX. I also recently sold an unrelated item and have a bit of cash to spend. But I just can’t make myself pull the trigger.

I have indulged in other interests and gone down many a rabbit hole, acquiring lots of the associated goodies along the way. Much ends up as just more stuff little used. Recently revived interest in shooting and am doing so with airguns. Trying really, really hard to not go down another rabbit hole. Did so a little early on but have sold a couple of extraneous pieces. Lesson learned from before: more stuff doesn’t always mean more enjoyment.

I find that I do well to shoot what I have often enough to master those. Plus what I have are so simple to use, a springer and a SSP match rifle and a SSP match pistol (all high quality no junk, cry once). No compressors and the associated accoutrements and maintenance, no tanks to buy and refill, no fuss, just rifle, scope and pellets. Bought quality so no need to ‘upgrade’ to the next latest thing.

Mastering the springer is notably improving my skills with the other two, certainly not world class shooting but getting better, still pushing myself to improve. More stuff, different stuff is not a substitute for developing one’s skills, another lesson learned in other pursuits.

Sorry I am not doing my part to fit in, be one of the cool kids. Sorry, industry for not buying more and more stuff, not just pellets. Sorry I won’t be asking how to turn my .177 springer into a .50 cal. elephant gun as entertaining as that nonetheless might be. Obviously I’ll have no You-Tube videos forthcoming, watching skills develop is like watching paint dry. Thinking I should turn in my airgun man card and accept my public shaming for not keeping up.

Sorry.

PCP Rifle  SOLD HUBEN K1 22 (2021)

time to sell one of my Hubens. its the synthetic version in 22 caliber. the magazine was laser engraved to show remaining shot count. it also includes a 3D printed loading gate that works much better than the original. the gun looks practically new. $1450 + Shipping. it will be double boxed. this K1 loves the hades and is not pellet picky at all. i have not tried slugs in it. i would consider a few trades like krait compact, Fx wildcat BT , kalibrgun mini Carbine , daystate or BRK rifiles.

Eliminated entire trash panda family!

New record for me, took out 4 racoons back to back to back to back. Saw the family stroll into my yard so I got set up and waited for a clear shot on mama. I wanted to take out the biggest one first as I assumed the rest would run away. Turned out I was wrong lol. I was able to dispatch all 4 in about 30 seconds, each one taking one shot to the fuse box. No follow up shots needed.

Used my FX Maverick in 25 caliber, shooting Hades pellets at 925fps. This was my first time using the Hades on racoon, typically I dial up the power and use FX 34gr pellets at 915fps for headshots on trash pandas, but my gun was set up for Hades at the time. Obviously they worked well. Distance was about 30yds, close enough that I didn't feel the need to dial the gun up to full power. Also used the Oneleaf "night vision" attached to my hawke sidewinder scope.

Range finders

I was in Cabellas last week and decided to stop in at the optics counter and check out some range finders. I only looked at 4 brands but did test out all the models under $700. My favorites are as follows:
Vortex Razor HD 4000. It was the least sharp of the 4 and seemed to have the widest beam. It worked great on most animals but had a harder time with the squirrels. It would be great for dear. Back wall ranged at 88 yards.

Leica 2800. It was the sharpest and had the clearest glass of all. It did great on the squirrels and smaller objects but you had to wait for it to reset/finnish it's ranging cycle before it would allow you to take another reading. Not sure why it was doing this. Back wall ranged at 86 yards.

Leupold RX 1400 and the Full Draw. Very sharp and clear but also very cluttered feel while ranging. I had a difficult time getting the smaller items to range properly and the U shaped aim point was less than ideal for me. This also would be best for anything larger than squirrels. It ranged the back wall at 87 yards.

Sig Kilo 4K. This was my favorite due to the fact that it ranged the small items consistently, the aim point was small enough and it wasn't too cluttered. The glass was on par withe Leupold but not as good as the Leica. Ir raged the back wall at 86 yards.

I do not have info on the menus or ballistic software as I only use the range finder for well, finding the range.

If the Leica worked quicker and had an easier to read display, it would have been my top pick.

Occasionally I got erroneous readings with the Vortex and the Leupold but I feel like that was mostly due to my not being 100% steady.

Well, at least the gun shoots well

Baby steps. I shot 6 sets consisting of a 3” circle and a 2” circle at 10’, then another pair at 17’, and finally a pair at 33’. Five shots at each circle, except as noted on the 17’ pair.

Sitting offhand and open sights as usual.

I like to warm up with the 10’ distance on this target, but given that the 17’ results were almost as tight except for one flyer, and given that the 33’ results need a lot of improvement, maybe next time I’ll start at 17’ instead.

A suggestion to FX in regard of FX Panthera Hunter compact.

In order to make more comfortable the adjustable stock and not making your wrist to touch the rear bottle when the hand is in the grip, my suggestion is to increase 2.5 inches the length of the but pad, that way it is possible to locate lower the fit of the rear bottle.

That small change will also give more room to the adjustments on the stock of this rifle in order to make it more comfortable.

Brocock/BRK  Ghost .30 initial thoughts..

After putting some bits on it & going over the rig with a fine eye, I'm pleased with the fit, finish & especially ergo. I had planned to mount my warne 11mm cz rail adaptor & use a specific 1 piece mount but when I removed factory rail quickly realized it's not a 11mm rail on the ghost . It more a 3/8 rail with 45 degrees vs 11mm & 60 degrees. My ring centerline from top of of dovetail is 1" 3/4 as it is with the factory 1913/dovetail mount which puts me good for eyebox. What suprised me was when I flipped that factory rail over to measure is the quality of maching on it,. It realy is quite good & BRK could have easily cheaped out on it by not giving us a complete contact all the way to bottom of dovetail rail. I'll just use low .9 " rings for now as eye box is perfect & maybe revisit using a 1 piece ring mount. . I also like the fact you can grab the rig just behind the scope & carry off with it. Same place I grab my uragan. Got some new bits coming for compressor so well see how it shoots soon enough. I'll start with jsb .44s.

Testing, testing 1... 2... 3...

I'm pretending that I'm new to airguns. I have had some bb guns and pellet guns as a kid and I have a mutlipump pellet rifle that has horrible accuracy now.

I have a rat problem at my chicken coop in suburbia and it's a 20 yard shot from my back door to the front of the coop.

I need a gun with multi shot capabilities for quick follow up shots, accurate to hit a rat at 20 yards, not too powerful or loud 'cause I have neighbors. My budget is $500 for the whole set up gun, scope (AO down to 10 yards) and a way to charge the gun with air.

What do you recommend?

Thank you! 🙏🏼 👊🏼

As the title says I have an RTI Prophet 2 Performance for sale. I have had this prophet along with an AEA Terminator 2 for about 6 months now. I am wanting to sell everything pictured as a bundle with the prophet for 1775. Everything will be shipped in the hard case and I will ship the scope separately in another box to avoid damage while in transit. I will also split shipping 50/50 with buyer.

Soda can carnage at 300 yards!

My friend is lucky enough to know the owner of the open property behind his house and was able to setup targets out to 300 yards. He asked me and another guy to shoot at his house this morning. However, he had this crazy idea of a friendly match on soda cans at 220 yards and 300 yards. I had a chuckle at first because a can at 300 yards is well under a MOA wide, we were joking before the shoot that we might need more than 1 box of slugs to hit all the cans. Worse part was I switched my impact from 25 to 22 so had to find a tune and zero.

Match format is 220 yards first then 300 yards. We can shoot sighters then 3 shots on 3 cans. My friends started with 2 and 1 at 220. I was last, got first and third shot. Pretty darn impressed with myself! The my friend’s knocked a can with his first shot at 300 yards, we all shouted in disbelieve!!! He missed his second shot but nailed the third can!!!

Didn’t think I had much of a chance when it was my turn so guess pressure is off. After a few sighters the wind was fairly consistent so squeezed the trigger with 1.2 mrad hold for wind, the flight took what seems forever and boom! First can blew up!!! Holy chit!!! Could not believe my eyes! Second shot was slighy low and right but adjusted the third shot and Boom!!! Simply unbelievable!! We have a tie!!!

The shoot off was at 300 yards at 1 shot each. Both of use forgo any sighters. My friend went fist and missed by less than an inch. I watched the wind and squeezed the trigger….boom!!! OMG!!! Could not believe my own eyes! That was epic!! Could NOT imagine hitting cans at 300 yards with our little BB guns just couple of years ago! After the match we blasted away at the surviving cans and knocking fallen one around for another hour. Best ever 300 yard shooting for me, 3 12oz soda cans in 4 shots when it counted!!! What a blast!!! For reference we were all shooting our impacts in 22 with 700mm barrel.

The carnage at 300 yards:

Hope everyone is also having an awesome 4th weekend!

Screwed to death

I have a Gamo Urban which gave me a few years of (very loud) service and decent accuracy with CPHP.

A few months ago it started leaking, at first slowly but now it dumps the air in a few minutes through the barrel and breech.
I assumed I will need to change a few o rings and decided to disassemble the rifle.

Now the fun starts.

The Gamo Urban schematic is here: https://spares.bagnallandkirkwood.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/GAM3-Exploded-Diagram.pdf

The first 2 long screws going into the breech were seriously stuck and took 2 hours to get them out.
I bought a screw extractor kit which proved to be useless, used WD 40 as penetrating oil useless again.
I could only get the screws out by using a Dremel and cutting a slot in them and the side of the breech (which was in the way).

Continued with the disassembly until I got to the 2 screws pinning the valve to the air tube.
2 hours later after breaking a hex key in one of them I made a slot with a Dremel.
Now, even with the slot and a few flathead screwdrivers the screw will not budge.

Does anybody know how to get those screws out ?

If nothing works I was thinking of destroying that POS Gamo Urban on camera and posting it on youtube.

  • Question
Verifying Humane Dispatch of Squirrel ?

Do squirrels have a different nerve reaction than rats with a kill shot to the brain ?
Most of my pesting is on rats. So I’m familiar with how their body jumps twitches and helicopter tail.
I’ve recently dispatched two squirrels. (.177 Sub 12 FPE , 20 yards or less ) After the initial head shot I go to retrieve the squirrel(s). And they act like they are gasping for air. I then put one shot after another into their head. At close range. And they still act like they are gasping for air.
Is that the normal reaction from a squirrel with a fatal shot to the head ?
If/when I dispatch an animal I want it to be as quick and humane as possible.

Battle of the Wolves

Battle of the Wolves in Rancho San Diego. What I haven’t included are group photos, since they were all ten shot groups at 100 yards, at least 6 or 7 groups each. Wind swirly breezy about 4 to 7 mph.

IMG_1264.jpeg

Contestant #1, my .25 Daystate Red Wolf that I shot at EBR 2022 and finished 3rd Pro, top American, and top Daystate rifle.
Vortex Golden Eagle 15-60x scope and JSB .25 Heavy Mk1 at 925 fps. I kept the scope at 30x on both for fairness.

IMG_1262.jpeg

Contestant #2, my .22 Daystate Red Wolf HP, which until very recently had a midnight blue stock and now sports a red PRS chassis (thanks AoA!!!). This is the gun I won for winning EBR 2019 (S) and also had the high overall score at RMAC 2021 - (229-8x).
Hawke Sidewinder 8-32x scope and JSB Monster RD at 975 fps.

IMG_1263.jpeg

So I had one on one bench, the other right there on the other. I would shoot ten at one target, then shift guns and shoot another ten at a different target. All at 100 yards. No target pics (how boring), but I did get a few ten shot MOA groups with the .25 and one ten shot MOA group with the .22.

What I did notice, the BIGGEST difference, was the .25 Heavy was significantly less affected by vertical jump due to quartering winds, plus less overall drift from side winds. Now, I know you can say the BCs are so close, 0.053 (.22) to 0.055 (.25) that it SHOULDN’T make a difference.

And that’s what I expected. But I was surprised, and especially noteworthy was the vertical jump when the wind was from 10:30 or 1:30. A different and notable difference of over 1/2 inch at 100 yards, or the difference between a 9 and an 8 on an EBR card.

So without further ado, the winner in this matchup, and the gun that will get the nod for EBR 2023 100Y BR is my .25 Daystate Red Wolf, Bullseye 🎯
