Shooting for score is so much more stressful than just shooting groups

I found some 25yd benchrest targets online and decided it would be fun. I thought it would be much simpler than it actually is. Typically I just shoot for groups and do pretty well but this has been eye opening. It is a completely different mountain to conquer. Granted the targets are scaled down a bit to fit an 8.5x11 printer paper, I still hoped for a bit better. For scale, the 6 ring or better is under a dime. The outer black 5 ring is roughly a penny.

OBLIGATITORY EXCUSE PARAGRAPH:

Wind was definitely a factor here this morning and I was severely lacking wind flags. I scored on broken lines counting the lead outline of the pellet. Not sure how its actually supposed to be done but that was my best guess. I'm using domes as opposed to wadcutters so my punches weren't as clean as they could have been. Anyway, here's my attempt with my .22 Theoben. 217/250

My cheap printer can't handle card stock well so it's unfortunately off center. The important bits are there though.

PSA While Out Shooting...

Deet is your friend. I live out in the country and ticks are common here. I've been around them my whole life save for my stint in the Army and never thought anything about pulling them out of me.
Last year was really bad and I was catching 2-4 a day off me. This year, not as bad, but still finding a couple each week. About a month ago, one left a mark and instead of me taking notice, I just figured I'd left the head in so I dug around with a knife and after finding no head, I forgot about it. Until earlier this week. Started with a headache... shoulders...neck...back.... then fever. Then all joints aching and finally me in convulsions.
Trip to the doc after that night.
So yes... it appears I've contracted Lyme disease. Antibiotics now have me feeling human again and today has been the first day I've been moving about.
I know a lot of you might live in the sticks like me and dont think of preventative measures for ticks and view them as a simple annoyance. I know I did. Not any more.
Stay safe out there!

Beeman  25 to 55 in dead air ...

Is it a common thing to be spot on at 25 no change in horizontal ,pretty much stacking the pellets ,then shoot at 55 and be 3/4 to the right ? Conditions: 0 wind and rifle is shot off front bag off of palm of hand .I feel I can hold and shoot the rifle at 55 the same as 25.as far as keeping still ,my reticle is spot on static at the same POA .Wondering if clicking up to zero for 55 changes horizontal as well ? Idk?

FX  Tired of POI changes on Dreamtact compacts

Well noticed my Dreamtact Compacts' impact moves from just simple bumps of the barrels getting them in and out of the box. I tested it in the basement by just tapping the moderator up, down, left and right. The impacts would hit in those locations about a half inch away at 11 yards. I ordered some 22mm OD x 20mm ID carbon fiber tubes and plan to slide them over the outside of the shroud and cut them just a smidge longer than the shroud so the moderator can put tension on the carbon fiber tube against the reciever. Fingers crossed it fixes the wondering POI.

Skout  Skout Epoch in .177

Before anyone jumps to any misguided negative conclusions "STOP". Please read my post carefully.
The Skout Epoch in .177 is the best airgun i have ever returned to a merchant for a refund; actually the only airgun i have ever returned to a merchant for a refund.

I specifically waited for the .177 Cal Skouts release before buying the Skout Platform. Primarily because my backyard isn't conducive to larger caliber fun and most of my shooting is field target oriented. At this point in time, 7/29/23, I assume, I am probably one of the very few people who have purchased this gun in this specific caliber as the company intentionally started with the larger calibers and worked their way down.

I loved everything about this gun, the hard case, the accessories, the extra barrel and ohhhh the craftsmanship!
I even liked the annoying little female voice telling me she was powering the gun off or on or that i made a fire fault.
I liked the fitment of the new Donny FL accessory attachment at the end of the barrel; especially when paired with a Silent Thunder Ordnance Moderator!

The icing on the cake is the manufacturer of Skout Epoch - They have without question, the best team of airgun folks I've ever run into... cradle to grave, they are on their game! Huge Kudos to Skout!

So if i like my Skout Epoch soooo much, why did i send it back for a refund?

I purchased this state of the art beast with the intention of using this gun in a soon to be National Shooting event; thus it needs to be completely sorted now, as in perfected, so i could have enough time to become one with the platform and shoot intuitively. This means i don't have time to sort through a problem that requires a manufacturer, no matter how good, to go back and forth with me; especially considering I'm an end user and I am not a technically inclined sort of guy who has the time to take things apart and reassemble them and then test again.

As best i can tell, at this point in time, the Skout Epoch in .177 only has one flaw - the magazines. If you study the pictures you will understand why. The original magazine that came with my gun from the retailer was chewing up the skirts on my JSB 10.34 pellets - my favorite for field target. Why?
Best my pea brain can decipher from the pictures and pellets, is the holes which contain the pellets in the magazine and assist in feeding them into the breech, are just too damn big.

When i sent Skout an email, they immediately jumped into action and sent me two more "reworked"? magazines and a different pellet probe to try.
The new magazines were better but the problem was still there, a problem i could feel it every time i feed a pellet into the bore...way too much resistance for a .177 pellet. I have a clever tool - a perfect carbon fiber rod designed for a .177 barrels which allows me to gently push a pellet back out of the breech to inspect for pellet feed issues; this is how i was able to get a good look at the damaged pellets without firing them - once fired a damaged pellet was visible by where it did not hit the target.

Will i buy this .177 Skout Epoch again? ABSOLUTELY!

New magazine but still way Easy to see TOO much space around pellet and too little contact surface holding pellet concentrically during feed.

Point of AIM is always the fine cross hairs on the splatter burst target. Although perfectly Zeroed at 25 yards and locked in on a bench on a no wind day, every pellet was chasing the zero; consistent (i believe) with pellet loading damage.

FPE needed to deform a pellet???

How many FPE are needed to get a pellet to deform…?

I’ve often wondered why pellet manufacturers don’t make softer “hunting” pellets, from softer lead, which will deform, mushroom and dump all their energy into the target, there by helping with hydrostatic shock, making bigger holes, doing more damage to vital organs etc and lessening the chance of a pass through and the possibility of damaging things behind the target (I’m thinking about pest control here).

So I tested some .177 pellets in my sons little Gamo Delta Fox.
I tested some 8.44gr JSB exacts which leave the muzzel at 451fps producing 3.8FPE.
I also tested some JSB Hades 10.34gr which will be slightly slower, but probably produce about the same fpe, let’s call it 4FPE.

The results were the same for both.

IMG_7130.jpeg

IMG_7132.jpeg

At these very low powers, the pellets completely deform and turn into smarties, or M&M’s for those who don’t know what a smart is.
Imagine if they performed the same way hitting a rat or a starling!

So, is the lead soft enough??? With 3.8FPE a steel plate at 10m completely flattens a pellet, but a rat or bird dosent provide enough resistance to get the pellet to deform and dump energy. They usually pass through pretty much unchanged. Are our pest targets too soft?

I think we need softer pellets for close range hunting/pesting.
Yes I know velocity is a major factor, those same 10.34gr hades at 950fps will mushroom going through a rat, but that rat better be standing in an open paddock, with at least another paddock behind that one, because ur never going to see that pellet again…
Same pellet and same rat in a milking shed… hummmmm 🤔
And yes of course pellet shape also plays a huge role in how that pellet performs, mushrooms and dumps energy. I wish they could make a soft hollow point pellet that groups as accurately as a domed pellet, mushrooms to twice the caliber, dumps all its energy and ever exits… 🤔

Does anyone have an even lower powered air rifle/pistol so we can continue testing?
Try keep it .177 and steel plate pellet trap at 10m, and for the sake of continuity try use Exact and Hades if you can.

Pete.

FX  A question for FX experts about the tungsten hammer in M3

So what regulator pressure should I be at for the tungsten hammer? Would it be unnecessary to use if I want to shoot 27-28 grain slugs at 1050? I also happen to have some extra hammer weights; one is for a .25 caliber and the other a .30 caliber. They are lighter than the tungsten hammer. Should use those instead for better harmonics?

I am currently at 122 bar on my reg…but the rifle seems a little jumpy for 122 bar...I believe that tungsten hammer is smacking the valve way too hard. Thoughts? Where would I need to be on my reg for the rifle to stop being jumpy?

To reiterate, I want good harmonics to shoot 27-28 grain slugs. Let me know and thanks.

Yong Heng rebuild--Done!

Picked up this non-working Yong Heng pump a few months ago from a semi-local AGN member. A few weeks ago, I decided to tear into it and see what was wrong with it. Ordered new replacement parts from Aliexpress and they were delivered a few days ago. I put it back together yesterday and topped off two of my three SCBA tanks (30 min & 45 min) from 3300psi to 4300 psi. It's working great now and looking for a few more years of service.

Parts ordered:

- Piston assembly
- gasket set
- High pressure one way metal gasket

FX  F X impact .177 M3 compact, trouble with flyers

I have cleaned the barrel three times. I have tried three different brand 10.3gr pellets and three moderators. Tuned 2nd reg from 85 to 120. Adjusted mirco and macro. I have moved slow, been patient. Adjusted VA from 4 down to 1 Watched numerous tuning videos. Factory setting : 150, 120, 16, 2.5, line 4. tried speeds from 840 to 940 aimed for 875. Unable to get tight ES, most often a 30 +spread . When I shoot 25-35 yds, , get a couple fair shots and intermittently flyers, sometimes 10 inches off. Checked the probe and mag. Had the rifle one year, passed thru 12,000 pellets. Maybe wore it out ? Great performance and accuracy up until 2 months ago. I like to tinker but enough. I am at wits end, ready to send to FX for repair and pro tune. BUT, wanted to check here first for any suggestions ? Thanks.
