RTI  Prophet / Priest .177 slug shooters - are there any in here? ;-)

Cutting to the chase - I have a 20" (510mm) .177 LW barrel in one of my prophets and it really likes jsb 13g ko's. I'm down to my last tin of them. I've heard / seen via youtube (and maybe in here?) that the zan's are supposed to be quite good. The Danish youtube guy (Viking Airgunner) - he swears by the 16g zan's. He's also got a 700mm barrel too so . . . . he can get 'em up to speed w/out much effort. I'm just curious if any of you guys are shooting the subjected and with what for ammo? I'm tempted to pick up a "tin" ( carton - whatever the zan's come in ) of both the 13's and the 16's just to try them out.

------> OR <------

Do I just not be a knucklehead and grab another 4 or 5 tins of a known good ammo and be done with it? ( lol ) I kinda don't mind experimenting but then again - I also (potentially) wind up with yet another tin of "X" ammo that didn't work and it winds up just sitting in a box taking up space . . .

Thanks guys

Want to be worth while

This is not a self pity deal. I was like many in the beginning here, just looking to post enough to sell stuff. Then I became enamored with all the cool stuff here! Now, IDK, 6 years later, I feel I’m running out of worthy contributions, big part of it is personal range access. I have ZERO! Have to now rely on firearms public range hour and a half away. Eastern Long Island, known for windy weather. Limited funds blocks cutting edge access to new stuff, mora, epic 1. Etc. how do I continue to contribute? Ahhh, feeling a bit bummed 🫤. Sorry about the pity semi rant, lol!

I have an industry related invention/product and don't know how to propose it.

I have an idea related to this industry and am researching patent companies but I thinking because of how specialized it is they might not get what I am doing. I wouldn't mind teaming up with a manufacture or selling the idea. It would be pretty low priced manufacturing and open up to a much larger customer base due to lower cost.

New Chaser

Hi folks,
So I took some advice and purchased a Chaser in .22 cal. I found a cheap red dot and didn’t hesitate to install it. I easily removed the front sight (it’s so damn ugly) and reinstalled the thread protector. Reading mixed reviews of the magazine I only purchased one.
Range review;
Positives: Weight and balance feel great! I love the left side cocking handle. Red dot worked great. 7 round mag worked almost flawlessly (should have bought five, wish it held ten rounds). The gun was decently accurate at 12 yards, I’ll go out to 25 next time.
Negatives: The stock grip is heinous looking and very uncomfortable. The magnet that holds the tray/magazine could be five times stronger and they still could be easily removed. With the front sight removed the barrel profile is hideous.

Overall the gun is a keeper, thanks to you all that brought it to my attention.

Projectiles  SOLD TRADED:WTT/WTS: 25 pellets - trade or sell

TRADED…
I have sold my .25 rifle and picked up an another 177 and a 22, so I need some pellets. I have a bunch of .25 pellets, but I need more 177 and 22.

I have:
  1. 22 tins of .25 34gr - 20 tins of FX and 2 tins of JSB. Found another dented can of FX and a partial tin of JSB.
  2. 5 tins of .25 25gr - 4 tins of JSB and 1 FX
I am looking for
  1. .177 in 10 or 13gr
  2. .22 in 18-25gr. Specifically 18 and 25, but I’ll try more of the new stuff on the middle.
If you want to buy it, I will price it better than you can buy anywhere else new. Price will depend on how much you want to buy. I can obviously give a better price on 20 than I can 2 considering shipping. I would probably suggest at least 8 tins per sale to be worth it for both of us.

FX  FX King .25 & Huma Transfer Port V2 with Pin Probe - Installation Question.

Upon receiving my new transfer port v2 and pin probe from huma, i noticed there were no installation instructions on how to properly remove the barrel, I did find a few videos on how to remove the barrel watching Viking Airgunners youtube channel that does show him installing this on a dynamic block, but there are subtle differences between his dynamic block and mine. I have an King and he has a Panthera, the spot where he removes the shroud from his Panthera there is a spot for him to use an allen wrench to loosen that locking ring holding the barrel. I don't have the same locking ring, does this ring even hold the barrel down? Or is this just to thread the shroud? Any help would be gladly welcomed. Thank you!

Comparing a few Poppet Valves

Before I begin...Many thanks goes to Dave/ @sb327 for his contributions in getting me to where I am today with my current valve arrangement, we worked together closely to dial in versatile pilot valve that works very similarly to the one found in the L2. Also thanks to @csdilligaf for turning me out another one for me for my unregulated marauder. He is a fine gentleman and a machinist whose work is impeccable, honestly out of this world, at this level its an art. The one he turned for me is shown below anodized in a light gun metal grey.

Starting from the Bottom, are a series of poppet valves found in todays pcp's, as we work our way up, the valve designs become more complex but overcoming the force holding the valve shut or shutting the valve is reduced as we ascend. I'll briefly discuss some of their functions and the important numbers acting on each version. All of these have gone through their paces in the same old marauder, as I've experimented over the last 7 years modding and tinkering. I won't be covering hammerless valves here as they are much more complex and not universally retrofittable to most pcp's like the below variety.

A: Standard poppet @ .276" OD, .125" stem, at 2000 psi with 5lbs of valve spring has 129 lbs of force holding it shut, and 29 lbs of peak closing force on the poppet while opened prior to pressure drop. Required 50 grams of hammer and 7.7 lbs of hammer spring .8" hammer travel. .6 FPE / 2 momentum

B) Standard poppet @ .276" OD, .78" stem, at 2000 psi with 5 lbs of valve spring has 129 lbs of force holding it shut, and 14 lbs of closing force on the poppet while opened prior to pressure drop. This valve required 50 grams of hammer and 6 lbs of hammer spring to operate. .8" hammer travel. Roughly .5 FPE / 1.64 momentum

C) Balanced valve, .295" OD, .125" stem, at 2000 psi with 5 lbs of valve spring, it has a .234" balance piston, which reduces the force holding it shut to around 55 lbs of force, with 29 lbs of closing force while opened. This valve required around 20 grams and 7.7 lbs of hammer spring to operate. .8" hammer travel. Roughly .45 FPE. / 1.2 momentum

D) Balanced valve, .295" OD, .078" stem, at 2000 psi with 5 lbs of valve spring, with the same .234" balanced piston and 55 lbs of force holding it shut, it only has a peak of 14 lbs acting upon it while open. This valve required 15 grams and only 5 lbs of hammer spring to operate. ..8" hammer travel. Roughly .384 FPE. / .902 momentum

E) O-ringless Pilot Valve. .315" OD primary which reduces to .276", and .117" OD Pilot head, .125" stem, at 2000 psi the pilot head only has 24 lbs of force holding it shut with a 2 lb valve spring, while the primary has 159 lbs holding it shut. This valve operates with 4.8 grams of hammer, 4 lbs of hammer spring, .044" hammer travel. Roughly .12-.13 FPE / .277 momentum

IMG_20240706_102742837_HDR.jpg

As you can see, even a balanced valve taken to an extreme degree of balance with a reduced stem diameter to remove as much closing force as possible while remaining tunable, the reduction in hammer energy needed to operate the valve is reduced a fraction of what a pilot valve can accomplish. These above examples are all quite extreme, taken as far as they can be while still being very functional and tameable via hammer strike.

As you ascend through each poppet variation, the design and fabrication that goes into them gets far more complicated, as well as tuning them and setting them up. They all have their pros and their cons, but the benefit to sharing this knowledge is that nearly all pcp's can be retrofitted with the above valves, depending on your guns or personal limitations, its nice to have options if you want to reduce the required hammer strike needed to operate your valve, which results in a smoother shot cycle with less harmonics disturbing your point of aim and thus point of impact.

As you see above, I favor peek. In case you're reading and aren't familiar with the material selection, it's due being less compressible than many counter-parts, which a hammer strike has to over come, the compression of your poppet against the seat, it also stands up to wear and tear much better with this so you're only extending the life of your poppet going with peek or peek filled varieties.

Both Pilot and balanced valves rely on properly sized vents and chambers with ideal volume which can vastly change how they operate, from requiring a lot of hammer strike, to requiring very little, while the latter generally has an unstable or unreachable low end due to not being able to close the valve fast enough (too much volume/not enough vent), and the former is rather undesirable as the whole purpose of going this direction with valves is to reduce hammer strike while retaining tunability, which is why there is the Goldilocks zone for vent sizing and volume within chambers. Both designs for PV and BV above have adjustable height / chamber volume, and adjustable vent sizing (also known as jets) that help one find their Goldilocks zone.

I could write a lot more in regards to the pros or cons of all the versions, or their inner-workings and what makes them tick, but I'll keep this simple to make it more digestible for now and to not clutter this primary post covering some basics.

-Matt

Brocock/BRK  I'm getting to know my new Brocock/Brk Commander XR Magnum Cerekote in .22

My Brocock/Brk Commander XR Magnum Cerekote in .22 arrived yesterady and I've been spending a lot of time trying to tune it and test all sorts of pellets and slugs at 50m.

I did a lot of shooting my new Brocock/Brk Commander XR Magnum in .22 trying to find best tune for best pellet. So, 25,39 seemed, from what I observed, the optimum weight for pellets (so far). I tried JSB 25.39 redesigned, Grands, Shallow, Deep and Hades, but guess what my gun liked so far (as far as pellets go, slugs are next to test): JTS DeadCenter 25.39. The also looked the cleanest and no damaged skirts. (and they come in a screw-on tin).

Here's the unbelievable practically ZERO SD with these JTS Airguns #DeadCenter 25.39 domed pellets. None of the others that I mentioned gave me a SD like this! And they SEEMED (SO FAR) to be the most accurate at 50m , but I've had the gun for 2 days and I'm still testing it. I'll likely try JSB BEAST 34 grain tomorrow (Sunday)

So far I've done most of my shooting with a Buck-Rail.com moderator, I have a Ronin and Yokozuna from Donny Donnyfl Du and I am expecting a Ryu coming on Monday, again from Donny Donnyfl Du. I noticed no POI changes from the moderators, and the Brocock/Brk Commander XR Magnum in .22 was not very loud without a moderator.

I put a Saber Tactical ARCA/Picatinny Rail on the lower pic rail of the Commander as I use a tripod frequently and also wanted to protect the bottle from upward torsion.

Given that my Brocock/Brk Commander XR Magnum (Cerekote) is more expensive than my FX Panthera 600 Dual Bottle, I expect a LOT from the Commander. I get 68 FPE from Zan 30.5g .218 slugs at about 1007 fps from the Panthera and I have some doubt that the Commander XR Magnum can do that! We'll see within next few days.

Here's the unbelievable chrono from the Commander XR Magnum with 25.39 grain JTS Dead Center pellets. The other chrono with 68 FPE is from the Panthera 600mm with Zan 30.5g .218 slugs.

DonnyFL Tanto on 30 FPE?

Hello, what is everyone's experiences with the DonnyFL Tanto on a ~30 FPE gun?

I have a Taipan Veteran Long .22 that is tuned to around 31 FPE. I have the Koi on it and have been quite happy with it for the past 3 years I've had it. I'm thinking of buying the Tanto because I'm trying to get the rifle as short as possible The Tanto will give me 2" additional clearance, but I'm just not sure of the performance compared to the Koi.

Accessories  NLA FX Power Plenum & .25 600mm slug barrel

FX impact power plenum and standard block.
And a .25, 600mm slug liner and housing/shroud + .25 bolt as pictured.

Bought used for a impact build I was planning but the deal fell through on the impact and trying to clear off my workbench. Asking $165 shipped for everything or will consider offers if you wanna split them up.
