Another Hunting Story

Hunting Bonds

The year was 1973, me being 12.
In the rugged desert of Southern Idaho, where sagebrush stretched across the rolling hills and basalt with my best childhood friend and I embarked on countless hunting adventures. Our bond was forged in the fresh county air, our footsteps through the brush and grasses as we pursued elusive game.

His name was Chris, a lanky kid with a perpetual grin. We were inseparable—two young souls drawn to the wild like magnets. Our fathers, seasoned hunters themselves, had passed down their love for the outdoors, and we eagerly embraced it.

The 1970s were a simpler time. No smartphones, no distractions—just the raw beauty of nature and the thrill of the hunt. My father and grandfather, as well as Chris's dad, Old Man Waters, taught us the ways of the woods. They would share tales of tracking deer, calling in elk, hunting small game, fishing, and the art of patience, and we hung on every word.

Our air rifles were basic for the time for each of us owning a Benjamin .22 Chris's had a his initials carved in his wooden stock, and mine had a scratch near the trigger guard. But those rifles were our magic wands, granting us entry into a world where time slowed.

We’d rise before dawn, our breath still visible in the frosty air. The scent sagebrush mingled with anticipation as we trudged along, our boots crunching on in the grass and brambles. Chris's snort-wheeze, a skill he’d perfected, broke the solitude of the walk. It was our secret language, a call that said, “I’m here, and so are you.”

On this crisp morning, we spotted our quarry, a creature with speed as his friend. Its ears reached for the sky, and its eyes held wisdom. Chris nudged me, eyes wide, and whispered, “Your turn, buddy.”

I steadied my rifle, feeling the weight of generations behind me. My elders' lessons echoed: “Breathe. Steady your aim. And shoot straight.” The jack rabbit stood behind a bush, its chestnut gray coat blending with the foliage. My heart raced as I squeezed the trigger.

The shot rang out, and the jack rabbit leaped, disappearing into the sagebrush. Chris grinned, his eyes dancing. “You got him, I know it!”

We followed the trail, blood drops like breadcrumbs. The sun climbed higher, casting dappled shadows on the ground. And there in a clearing in the sagebrush lay our prize—a testament to our shared heritage, our friendship, and the magic of the hunt. We bagged several of the wiley Jack's that day. Times that will be with me for life.

Years have passed, and Chris and I still talk about those days. our fathers and grandparents are gone now, but their spirit lives on in the whisper of the wind and the rustle of leaves. And when I see my own sons shouldering their rifles, I think of Chris and those Jack's and the bond that transcends time.

Sheridan  My Sheridan Model A #1077

Hello all!

I want to start off by saying that I am not a regular here, but I just wanted to take some time to share my Sheridan Model A (and other accessories) with everyone! While I don't have a huge interest in air guns, I've done enough research on it to know that it's a special piece and therefore do not shoot it much. The few times that I have shot it have been a real pleasure and everything works great. The dust around the bolt and rear sight is from the lining on the old soft case its been kept in for years but would be an easy clean if I were not scared of messing with this beautiful piece.

There is a good chance I will be looking to part ways with it soon, so if anyone has advice on how to go about doing that, it would be much appreciated.

N/A  Rifle set up to shoot 2 different pellets/slugs

I'm curious if anyone has tried having an air rifle set up to shoot 2 (or more) different pellets on the same tune (e.g. JSB 18.13gr @885fps + hades 15.89 @ 930? fps) Or maybe if your rifle has a high/low adjustable transfer port, have high set up for slugs and low for pellets. Any insight or experience appreciated

RAW Rapid  Loud thinking. Can we install FX Impact M3 1st regulator in RAW HM1000X?

I was just thinking is it possible to install 1st regulator of M3 in RAW HM1000X and remove its original regulator.

Definitely some modifications would be required.

I prefer FX regulators over Huma regulators and that is why I am thinking on these lines. Otherwise Huma offers a drop in regulator for RAW.

Brocock/BRK  Ghosted by a Ghost XR Carbine…🤓👻🙈💥

She arrived at the shop this Tuesday, May 21, 2024. I was paged to the office and…? Check out who’s joined the stable. The hair on the nape of my neck had been prickling all month long. Goose bumps everywhere, restless nights, feeling haunted, chatter from the other PCPs in the safe. And now I know why the sense of premonition. Check out what “materialized” before my eyes… A Ghost XR Carbine 👻 A big Thank you to Airguns of Arizona for the sweetly setup Ghost.

The images and videos on the interweb? Barely do it justice, it is simply a joy to hold and handle. The chassis is simply “solid” and impressive to this layman. I have never been superstitious but am starting to believe.🤓 The Ghost XR is a thoroughly vetted PCP, so my comments are simply those of a backyard plinker and occasional pester. And while I am enamored by the Ghost. The light, agile, and deadly Atomics in my safe are undaunted and whisper, “bring it on…”. They “ain’t afraid of no Ghost”, though the Pathfinder may be quaking a little as to its future role, TBD.

“All” my BRK Brococks have been drama free performers. I will simply plink away at least one whole tin of CPHPs with Ghost to let her settle in. Looking forward to figuring out how it fits into the current lineup. Am running the little West Hunter WHT 3-12x44 that was atop my Atomic. I have an unused G1 Helos 6-24x50 FFP, but am loathe to saddle her with a huge scope.

Currently sending as set up at AOA:

I have a solid reputation on AGN as an excellent seller and buyer. Can provide member references upon request.

For sale today is an extremely accurate little pesting/plinking combo. First is a BRK Pathfinder in .177 tuned to shoot the H&N Barracuda Match 10.64gr or newer Benjamin 10.5gr single die right around 800fps and will post tight groups out to 45-50 yards. I purchased the air rifle new from AoA in early 2023. It's only be shot indoors or off a bench, so no field use scrapes or marks. Comes with 2 - 13rnd magazines - the rifle comes with one and the 2nd was an extra purchase from AoA for $110.

Paired with the Pathfinder is a Pard DS35-70 LRF Day/Night Scope. Great scope for the price. Built in IR light. The LRF pairs with the internal Ballistics software to provide nice on the fly ranging and holdovers. I've setup the Ballistics for the Benjamin pellets and was able to accurately hit different targets around the around with no problems. The Pard is mounted with Eagle Vision INS-30 30mm adjustable pic scope rings.

Ideally I'd like to sell this as a package and I have priced the package deal aggressively as such. I will also sell Pathfinder and Pard/EV Rings separately.

Asking Prices (CONUS Shipping Included):

- BRK Pathfinder .177 w/ Pard DS35-70 Scope and EagleVision Adjustable Rings. Includes 2 Magazines. PRICE: $1,850
- Pard DS35-70 Scope and EagleVision Adjustable Rings. PRICE: $550

*** Pard scope sold - Pathfinder is still available. ***

- BRK Pathfinder .177 w/ 2 Magazines and all stock accessories. Will come double boxed with original packaging.
New price: $1795 + $109 = $1904

Asking PRICE: $1,400

What would be the best projectile

Hello, I’m new to air rifles. I have a Hatsan mod 125 vortex (.22) coming in on Friday. I have plenty of experience shooting centerfire rifles. In my experience different guns like different ammunition. So my question is, what are people shooting this rifle like the best? I will be using it to kill squirrels up to 60 yards. The squirrels have now ate electrical wires on at least 5 cars around my house. They must be eliminated. TIA.

N/A  Lubrication of the compression chamber without dieseling in the spring gun, yes of course.

I have been servicing all types of air weapons for many years and in the last year I have been using PTFE dry spray when I install a piston with a new seal after cleaning the compression chamber. The assembly is easier and most importantly there is no dieseling, occasionally I lubricate my spring airgun with the specified lubricant and there are no problems. I usually tighten the barrel and through the transfer port I inject a little of this lubricant through a small tube (WD 40 ptfe) and wait for the aerosols to explode because they are flammable and then it is safe to use. I have not tried molybdenum and graphite, which also come in a spray as nano powder, but I hope so that I will try them too.

Too Tight Pellets???

I bought a tin of Crossman Super Point Pellets .177 cal, 7.9gr, 4.5mm. for my RWS Diane pellet rifle, a break-barrel springer. I had just emptied a tin of pellets that worked very well, but I long ago tossed the tin so have no recall of the brand. Here's my problem; the Crossman SP Pellets are so tight that it is impossible to push them into the breech without smashing the soft tail-end of the pellet. I'm told by others that they use all manner of 'tools' to push the pellet in....like a ball point pen. I have a tremor, so loading them is a real nuisance. I'm looking to find a different brand and hate to buy a bunch of ammo that will give me fits and waste money. So.....have any of you guys had this problem and can you recommend a brand that is not so blasted tight?

N/A  Air rifle suggestions?

I went to my uncle's house last week for vacation and brought my Avenge-X with me for something we could to together, he lives in a place with a lot of open land but no where to really go to have fun. We shot it so much that we had to go out to get more ammo (we likely shot around 400 pellets threw the week). Side note: Cheap Crossman ammo at Walmart worked really well in my gun.
He showed a great interest in getting one of his own, not so much after seeing the price tho. He kept saying something along the lines that it be a good thing to have if all hell breaks loose but more likely he just wants one to kill time. For reference: he does not hunt, only plinks targets.
I suggested he get a break action or a pump instead, but I really didn't know which to direct him toward. So, that is what I am asking here.

Here is a list of things I think he would want:
Price under $200 (lower the better)
Something that he doesn't have to baby. I honestly don't think he will take great care of it, it will likely stay in his garage and be used whenever he gets bored.
Powerful (he would likely want a .22 cal). He seemed most impressed by my guns power. He had an old BB gun that he brought out and it was like a child's toy in comparison.
Quite. Even though there is plenty of open land behind his house, he does have people living on each side of him.
30-50 yard range. This is about how far we were shooting and he seemed fine with that.
Mag or multi shot. I honestly don't know if there are any pump/break action rifles that take mags, I am really out of the loop for modern air rifles. But for him it would be a plus if possible. Not a deal breaker.

I directed him toward a Gamo Swarm Maxxim but really only because Gamo is a popular brand and it is in his budget. Any help would be appreciated.

N/A  Airgun Idiocy

It honestly baffles me how incredibly dense some people are when it comes to airguns. Now, I get that your avarage joe who knows nothing about pressurized vessels might not understand the potential lethality of HPA... but this guy reviews airguns for a living. Like, what did he expect was going to happen? That it would gently deflate like a balloon? He's lucky that he didn't get a piece of shrapnel embedded in his face standing that close to the explosion.

EDgun  Leshiy Classic Trigger

Hi to all,

The trigger of my leshiy classic sometimes has a strange (and annoying) behavior.
We (the classic owners) know that there's no such thing as a 2 stage trigger in the classic. But we all try to tinker with it to get
the best performance.

As I wrote, sometimes when I pull the trigger to the point where it breaks, and I don't take the shot for some reason, the trigger
doesn't return to the initial position. It seems that the envolved spring doesn't have enough strenght to do it.

Anyone with this symptom?

Thanks

Which AGN Members Would You Like To Meet in Person?

Pretty self-explanatory title. Which AGN member(s) would you like to meet in person? Why would you like to meet them?

If you want to meet someone in order to kick their ass or do harm to them, please keep that to yourself. That sort of conversation is an AGN rule violation and is in bad taste IMO. Also, this is not a love connection thread soooo……let’s stick to the topic aside from that.

Match Report

Air Gun Oregon & AirGuns of Arizona - 2024 Extreme Air Gun Challenge

I’d like to thank everyone who attended, some traveling from across country, and everyone who made such a huge effort to make this event a success. First the sponsors, Co-sponsors, Air Guns of Arizona, and Skout Air Guns, also Athlon Scopes, Falcon Optics, Arken Optics, Altaros Slugs, JSB Predator International and Corbin Slugs for donating some of their quality products toward hosting the event… The event also would not have been possible without my club mates: Randy, Jacob, Darren, Casey, Eric and the RSO staff from Ashland Gun and Archery Club.

Thank you, and bless you ALL for helping me make this year’s event a success.

The many weeks of steady preparation and testing of our new long range targets with LED lighting signifying a hit was worth the effort. They didn’t perform 100%, but they really helped the score keepers get it right with a lot less down time between relays in the Long range event. And seeing the lights flash with a hit is REALLY satisfying for both the shooters and the fans watching. The rest of the facilities needed only minor repairs to be ready for action this year.

We added a new event this year and it gained popularity better than expected. The 100 yard EBR bench rest contests have been exclusively shot with pellets only. With all the new air rifles designed for slugs and the new high quality of the slugs being manufactured, I thought we should see how they could compare with the pellet scores in the 100 yard EBR game. I scheduled the slug classes to shoot in the later and most windy part of the day, so the scores in that class probably would have been even better, but the slug class, as expected posted on average, higher scores than the pellets, as you’ll see as I continue the report.

This year we had competitors the Skout Air Guns team from Pennsylvania, and they did well with their new slug barrel they matched up with some really accurate Corbin Slugs. They ended up with 3 first places. Many competitors also traveled in from the North and South West, 36 competed in the 5 events, 100yd EBR pellet, 100yd EBR Slug, EFT 25yd-105yd Field Target, the Speed Silhouette challenge, and the Long Range 145yd- 300yd challenge..

The weather was perfect on Thursday for registration and practice. The skies were partly cloudy with light winds with temps in the high 60s. Friday, the cold front started moving in and the winds began their dancing in our Southern Oregon Valley bowl. A double rainbow was called in to guide the competitors to the eventJ

We had 24 Extreme Field Target competitors, so with 15 lanes we easily split up into squads of two each. We had 64 total shots. The match went 1/3 faster than last year with this method, it allowed us to have more time to do both pellet and the slug class 100 yard bench rest in the afternoons.

John Bagakis again this year lead the way with the high score on day one with a 59/64, with Barbara Pellegrino within reach at 55/64. Gabe Valenzuela and Darren Taylor were next with 52/64. David Stevenson was at 51, and eight more from 47 to 50. Unless John had a bad day two it looked like a tight race for second to fourth.

Friday afternoon, we started with the Extreme Bench Rest 100 yard Pellet class. Gabe Valenzuela scored the high card with a 220-3x with his FX M3, Luke Sowinski from the Skout team was second with a 218-2x, Keith Short, Skout Team, next with a 217-2x, Linas Cechavicius with a RTI Prophet II a 215-3x and Mike Bricker shooting another Skout at 213-3x. Skout Air Rifles ended up doing well with three 1st places.

Later Friday, the EBR 100yd Slug class started around 3 pm and the fickle winds had gained velocity as the front edge of the cold front unfolded around us.

Brad Stevenson and his Vulcan 3 with Altaros slugs in .22 cal (5.52) 40gr Kings, shot a 237/250 with 3xs. That’s 17 points higher than the high pellet score for the day of 220 shot by Gabe Valenzuela. But that is still a long way from the perfect 250 scores you sometimes see in 25 meter bench rest. Does that matter, or is the target too hard? Gabe V. also shot a great 232 4x with his FX M3 and, as did Luke Sowinski, but his had 7xs shot with his .25 cal. Skout and Corbin .2475 caliber 48.5gr slugs. Todd Blanchard shot a 229 3x, and Mike Bricker a 223 2x. On average the slug scores were about 10-14 points better than the pellet class.

Some great scores were shot on day two of the EFT match. John Bagakis didn’t let up… he shot better with a 61/64 to secure his 1st place spot, but Andy Gonzalez also shot a 61/64 after shooting a 49/61 on day one, to jump all the way to 3rd. Barbara Pellegrino was more consistent with a 55 day one and a 57/64 day two, to secure her 2nd place prize. Linas Cechavicius & Gabe Valenzuela tied, but Gabe took 4th by winning the shoot off.

Almost everyone shot better on day two with the lighter winds, but you would think the light rain would have held back the scores, but Carl Forrey shot a 60/64, Mike Bricker and Linas Cechavicius a 59, Martin Martin and Glenn Horner both a 58, and Gabe Valenzuela joined Barbara with a 57 on day two to get him to the winners circle in 4th place in the AOA Extreme Field Target Grand Prix.

Mike Bricker shot the high 100y pellet class EBR score with a 224-0x for day two. Todd Blanchard was next with 220-1x, Tony Pellegrino a 218-0x and Luke Sowinski a 217-3x. Todd Hartman scored a 216-1x and John Bagakis 215-0x.

The last event for day two was the 100y Slug class EBR. Todd Blanchard’s 233-4x was the high card, with Brad Stevenson recording a 230-3x, Gabe Valenzuela a 225-2x, Luke Sowinski 224-4x and also Chad Staten a 224-3x. Mike Bricker shot a 220-0x and Bill Gardner a 219-4x. The stronger afternoon winds had taken their toll with the Slug class EBR scores ending much closer to the Pellet class on day two.

Here is the list of the competitors who made the 100y EBR Pellet class Finals: Robert Steele, Mike Bricker, Todd Blanchard, Gabe Valenzuela, Nathan Wilkening, John Bagakis, Keith Short, Luke Sowinski, Linas Cechanvicius, Fred Philips & Tony Pellegrino.

And in the new 100y EBR Slug class we had the following make the cut: Bill Gardner, Chad Staten, Mike Bricker, Todd Blanchard, Gabe Valenzuela, Brad Stevenson, John Bagakis, Linas Cechanvicius, Augie Sotelo, David Stevenson, Luke Sowinski, & Fred Phillips.

Sunday morning the skies were clearing and the winds were very light. We started off with the Speed Silhouette Challenge. We had two banks of 5 targets each for a total of 10 targets at 25 & 50 yards so the two competitors could go “head to head” with the winners moving on to challenge each other until we were left with John Bagakis on top and Dave Wilson second, and Linas Cechanvicius in third. It’s a really fun game to play AND watch.

Next up was the finals in 100y EBR Pellet class. After some very difficult scoring decisions, an abnormal and very gentlemanly tie was agreed to between Mike Bricker and Robert Steele for 1st with a 216-3x next was Todd Blanchard with 214-0x, and Todd Hartman at 213-3x and Gabe Valenzuela with a 212-2x.

The 100y EBR Slug Challenge showed higher scores this time with Bill Gardner from the Skout team posting a 234-5x, and Chad Staten was right behind with a 233-5x next was a tie broken by X count with Todd Blanchard at 232-6x and Mike Bricker with a 232-5x.

This year in the 300 yard Long Range Challenge, Mike Bricker didn’t shoot another perfect 250 or even win again, but his team won with his FX Panthera; Tony Pellegrino (210) was 1st, and Mike and Tony’s wife Barbara tied for 4th with 190. Scott Hull was second with a 200, and Brad Stevenson & John Bagakis tied for 3rd with 195. Chad Staten also tied at 4th with a 190. The new targets we designed with LED lights flashing when hit really worked well, a minor improvement will make them 100% accurate next year. They really helped the spotters and competitors AND the onlookers enjoy the game.

Finally, in the Combined this year, Todd Blanchard was 1st, Brad Stevenson 2nd, Gabe Valenzuela took 3rd a and Mike Bricker 4th.

Again, I really want to thank everyone who attended made such a huge effort to make this event a success, especially our Co-sponsors, Air Guns of Arizona, and Skout Air Guns, also Athlon Scopes, Falcon Optics, Arken Optics, Altaros Slugs, JSB Predator International and Corbin Slugs Please support them with your air gun related purchases.

The event also would not have been possible without my club mates: Randy, Jacob, Darren, Casey, Eric and the RSO staff from Ashland Gun and Archery Club.

Thank you, all and hope to see you again next year!
