First Time Sorting Pellets By Weight

I decided to take a shot at pellet sorting by weight. Watched the boot camp video that Chris from Airguns of Arizona did then I took about a half tin of .25 FX 34 grain pellets, washed them then began sorting. I used Chris's method of separating the pellets by .05 grain difference, plus or minus .02 grains. The photo below shows the spread. I was surprised to see the results. I expected to see one large number of pellets in the middle weight range and just a few trailing off lighter and heavier. My question is this - is keeping the .05 grain difference within each group really critical, or would the same results be gotten if the spread within a group is, maybe .10 grains or more? What weight difference within a group of pellets begins to affect accuracy? Thanks for any input!

scuba tank for pcp questions…

Background first…. I’m not new to pcp but I am a novice. I’ve had a Benjamin Marauder .177 for about 6 years with a hand pump. Love shooting it, hate filling it so it hasn’t been shot that much. Decided to buy the FX Impact .25 last month that I’ve been dreaming about but also purchased a small electric pump too. Love the gun, love the pump but know I’ll shoot even more if I get a scuba like tank. The electric pump works well but it’s still 6-9 minutes to fill the Impact, about 3 for the Marauder. So…

I’m not cheap but I’m conservative and don’t want to spend extra just to have the latest and greatest. (yeah, I know, I just bought an FX Impact… )
A carbon fiber bottle would be awesome but they’re $500+ for the smaller ones. New aluminum scuba tanks (I think it’s 80 cubic feet) can be bought for less than $250 and pcp valves for around $60. Weight isn’t a big issue for me. I’ll be shooting mostly at home so the tank doesn’t have to be that portable. And, the electric pump will also run off a 12 volt truck battery so I could just take that with me if I’m shooting away from home.

Are there reasons I should invest in the carbon fiber tank that I’m not thinking of? Have others went the scuba tank route and regretted it? Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

Hunter Division - how to overcome the 16x ranging challenge?

Feeling a little maligned lately by some of the recent threads that seem to have promoted the idea that the hunter class shooters that wish for a higher scope magnification allowance might be less than worthy competitors who are unwilling to overcome their 16x ranging challenges. I am a newish hunter competitor, been attending matches for about two+ years, and probably have competed 30+ regular ft matches on 4 different courses, and also have shot at few XFT matches. I usually score in the middle of the pack with an occasional top 3 finish at my home club range.

The 16x ranging limit has been a frustration of FT competitions since my very first meet a few years ago. I have tried to overcome the challenge by several methods - more practice, being consistent with ranging technique each time, bracketing where I can, tuning for flatter trajectories, purchasing a more accurate rifle and getting a slightly better scope. All of these have helped to some extent, but I will say bottom line is that from 45-55 yards at any venue other than my home club range I will most always have ranging errors that will prevent my pellet from giving me that ever blissful target knockdown.

Many of the hunter competitors in my club have addressed the challenge by going to the high dollar scopes - Kahles and Sightrons. I have tried their scopes and yes the do a better job at ranging than my Athlon - they too have ranging errors past 45, but typically about half the error of my Athlon from what I can determine.

So I still greatly enjoy hunter division FT, and have no plans to discontinue, or whine and moan (much) about the 16x limit, but I really don’t see a way to fully overcome that challenge other than going deeper into the arms race or finding that holy grail reasonably priced scope that ranges exceptionally at 16x.

SOLD AGT Uragan .25 - LTS

Hey guys, this is my .25 Uragan in MINT condition. It comes equipped with a Donnyfl suppressor, Vortex scope, Bipod, and also have the soft carrying case, pellets, 3 magazines, and also a carbon fiber tank dated 2020.

I am the original owner, I bought this rifle back in 2020 brand new. I bought it to shoot with my father as he was disabled and couldn't do a whole lot anymore. He has since passed away and I just never shoot it. Truthfully I've only shot it a handful of times. Great gun and in great shape. It's is crazy accurate and strong.

Please feel free to text or call if you'd like. Willing to share any info you may need. Thank you.

$1500 with air tank included. $1200 for just the rifle.

Thomas Air Rifles

Are there any web pages or videos out there that give more details on the Thomas such as Barrel swapping, tuning, whatever?

Just from looking at photos, it appears that the scope base is attached to the "clamp" that holds the barrel in the action. If that is correct, how do you keep the base square to the bore line when changing barrels - feeler gauges on either side or?

Are the barrels made up of multiple parts like an FX or some other make? If they come with multi piece barrels, can you also install a solid steel or carbon fiber wrapped steel, shroud-less / liner-less barrel like what is used in centerfire and rimfire guns?

FX Impact MK3 and 800 mm tensioned barrel kits

I watched an impressive video by AirArmsHuntingSA on the 800mm Barrel, Tension, Powerblock and Tungsten Hammer and would like to know if this is the barrel kit in the video.

With all the posts about FX quality control, recalls and delays concerning their new 800mm barrels, I reluctant to purchase an FX Impact MK3 at this time. I’d like to know how many 800mm barrel kit options are there from FX and if from others, who are they and which ones should be considered?

It also sounds like FX or some retailers are selling older model FX Impact MK3's, so what is the best way to insure when purchasing an FX Impact MK3 you are buying the latest version, assuming they are worth buying right now. Again, I’m looking for a .22 or .25 caliber FX Impact Bronze MK3 with an 800mm tensioned barrel and shroud which I understand is an accessory.

If buying the 800mm barrel kit and shroud is an accessory, does in make sense to buy the Impact standard model vs the Sniper version if upgrading to the 800mm barrel kit? I’m assuming watching the video the tungsten hammer should also be purchased.

In closing, what is the best way to purchase an FX Impact Mk3 with an 800mm barrel and shroud and from who?

22 vs 25 for lower/ quieter setup

Wanted to thoughts on 22 vs 25 cal for quietest but most effective setup..

My use is pesting squirrel (occasionally possum/ racoon but rare) with an emphasis on accuracy out to max of 40yds - most likely under 25yds 90% of the time

Quiet is key; I understand slower can equal quieter but also understand that slower affects FPE and can affect accuracy...

My current setup is a leshiy2 25cal running at 830fps with 40ft-lb; even with donnfl ronin and chamber it is too loud for my nosey neighors.... I was considering a 12ftlb tune and bring it down to 500-600fps but wasn't sure if just jumping to 22cal at 600-700fps would be better - and do it in a dedicated setup like a AEA HP or something. Once the leshiy is set up it can be adjusted but not on the fly (do not have repr)

Thoughts?

Huben k1 before and after barrel polish

Ok I went out today and shot 4 groups (full mag 19 shots) at 100 yards from a rest with my 2018 huben k1 in .22 caliber using the .2225 diameter, ~40.8 grain slugs that I swage myself using my Corbin s press. After I got home I disassembled my k1 and polished my barrel using JB non embedding compound then followed up with the JB bore bright. 90 strokes of each type in the 1st 3rd of the barrel starting at the breach, 60 strokes to 2nd 3rd of barrel and 30 for last 3rd. Here are pics of the groups before polishing.

20221015_132151.jpg

Not particularly great right? Thats why im trying the polish. Tomorrow I will go out and shoot 4 more groups in the same fashion and hope for good results. If I don't get better groups at first, I will probably just shoot a bunch of rounds to lead the barrel and then compare again. I'll report the better groups of the two and also mention if I had to lead the barrel first or not to get them. sorry to keep you in suspense if you're reading this between now and then. If my groups improve i will also polish my .25 huben barrel. Fingers crossed...

Well, my results are disappointing. I am leaning toward saying it made no difference. It was significantly more windy today though, and it was gusting randomly. Here are some groups shot after firing just one mag to check for scope adjustment and velocity.

20221016_161651.jpg

Very disappointing. Some are so bad it's hard to tell which shots are part of which group attempt. So I fired about 200 shots at other stuff to lead the barrel some. The 50 yard accuracy is still pretty good. After leading the barrel I shot these. This first one was with some of my old huben slugs which are 36.6 grains:

20221016_161707.jpg
20221016_161719.jpg
20221016_161700.jpg

So I'm not too happy. Hopefully it just needs more leading of the barrel to see a difference but I fired over 300 shots today. I'd think if the wind was to blame but it was improved overall then what I'd see is more consistent elevation but some variance on the windage part, but they seem as random as before. It does seem like my velocities are more consistent and I think I needed slightly less reg pressure to achieve 925 fps so maybe there is some benefit, idk.

Well I wish I had better findings to report, I'll update this post if the groups get better next time.

Hey a late edit, I posted in a reply below but thought I should add it here too. Here is a group I shot using .2213 flat base AVS slugs at about 880 FPS @ 100 yards. Approaching what I consider acceptable although this was only an 10 shot group not a 19. I also forgot my rest that day and it was freezing cold. I rested the rifle on my arm at the table and tried to hold still as i could, so not bad considering that and how the groups were before. I've ordered a new flat base punch and sizer to modify mine to be similar. I may have to slow them down from 925 to 880ish as well, at least when I'm shooting at 100 yards

Biting own arm off

I have been using duke coon traps to get the raccoons in my yard that have been flipping up the grass. Now, every Raccoon I have trapped has never tried to bite its own arm off in order to break free from the trap. They have been in the trap for many hours while I was sleeping, but they never even think about biting it off. However, when I accidentally trap a squirrel, it bites its own arm off after only about 10 minutes! Why?!

FX impact question

I got a problem with with a 22 caliber magisine please if anyone resolved my issue tell me , So I use my Mk2 22 cal compact , it shoots great , However what is bothering me is my magisines make a rattling noise when in gun and carrying so loud the squirrels hide before I can get in range , any cures for this if it matters I am using JSB KO SLUGS ,WHILE IT MOA @ 100 YDS I got to get them mags not to rattle any ideas or does this bother others ?LOU

Katran Long .22

Bought a used Katran several months ago and when I got the Katran, I was very disappointed with the accuracy.
Untitled-92.jpg

I was looking for 30-32 ft-lb .22 and after seeing all the videos on this pcp, I had high hopes. When I first got the Katran, I was told nothing was done to it since he had it. I tried every pellet I had but nothing would group under an inch at 30 yards. I ran JSB 18's over the chrony and saw the fps was 1030+, and the 25 grains were 900+. I looked up videos on how to adjust the hammer and reg but I couldn't get this thing to shoot pellets or slugs to my expectations. The best I could get was about an inch at 30 yards with the 18.1 grains.
By then I was regretting buying this junk until I saw some tins of pellets I ordered before the pandemic. I remember adding these cheap pellets to the cart just so I can make the free shipping. When I received the pellets, nothing would shoot them until the Katran. Ho!y Sh$t can this Katran shoot these cheap pellets. All three groups are 5 shot groups.
KIMG0788.JPG

The only problem with these pellets is they don't fit in the mag and I have to feed the pellets one at a time using the mag. As you can see the plastic gears are wearing. Not sure how long this mag will last.
Untitled-94.jpg

Another problem I found is the end of the barrel and shroud. There is a gap between the barrel the shroud that could cause misalignment of the moderator. It was fixed with some tape to fill in the gap.
