Curious about Shooting at Practice Targets

Hello everyone,

I am curious if you are a bit relaxed when shooting at some practice targets, in other words not as serious as you would be shooting a competition target? I shoot a lot of practice targets to try and stay sharp and keep my skill level up to be able to shoot a good competition target. I know that I am not learning or improving my skills if I shoot any target without giving every shot 100% effort and concentration. I have been shooting a lot of 30-yard and 50-yard targets lately and decided to focus on shooting some 25-yard this morning. I set up my Pellet Test Target at 25-yards and shot at the center Ring first ( first photo ). After 5 scattered shots I realized that I was only going through the motion and not concentrating at all. I put my brain in gear and then placed 5-shots in the same hole on the next four Rings. Next I set up my MOA 25-Yard Target and shot 29 out of a possible 30. Anybody else out there that finds their self target shooting while sleep walking .

purpose of gun?

This is one of those no right or wrong answer posts. What should be the goal of the gun's purpose. Accuracy of course, yes. That's not the issue. There are generally 2 schools of thought. 1 - specialty purpose. 2 - Multiversatile. Both have their ardent supporters, and neither one is wrong. I find myself in the specialty purpose camp. Getting a gun to fit a specific job and enjoy the hell out of it, and suppliment it with other guns each set for it's singular purpose primarily. However, the gun has enough adjustability to enable occasional adjustment so i have 2 similar powered options for when a friend , who may not have a gun , can join me in shared undertakings. pesting, target, etc.
Now others will advocate major adjustability for enabling 1 gun to sort of cover all bases. Maybe based on economics, no problem, totally justified. A lot of folks don't desire to part with 5-10 grand for say 3-5 high end PCP guns. So each shooter balances this equation as they see fit. I'm opting for specialty purpose, multiple guns so I do not need to engage in constant power setting and tuning changes for my current shooting situation. I don't mind adjusting every now and then, just not constantly. That's why I choose to go the route I do. But the other option is as equally valid. I'm sure opinions vary, I do not point my finger and say my choice is superior. In the end , we are all shooters with the desire to put lead to target - whether paper, iron , or live.

Slugs in a springer break barrel

Tested Griffin slugs in .217 and .218 in a Lothar walther choked barrel specs are for that barrel .215 lands and .221 groove ..217 is too loose and shotgun ...218 fit better but are inconsistent...Conclusion...stick with a decent pellet that has a skirt that engages the grooves..Barracuda 18.52 are Lazer accuracy for the lothar walther barrels..in .22 magnum springers..spent 8 hours in the field today testing the slugs weights from 16 grain to 20 and they do not group like pellets do .went on a light hunt after testing and switched to the barracuda at 18 grain and hit 4 squirrels at 50 and 65 ...The jury is out slugs are a waste of money to accurately shoot out of a springer. back to R&D to make a slug that can shoot minute of squirrel at any range ..

NLA WTT- looking for different options

Maybe looking to trade my avenger .22 for another pcp gun or even prod. I have a avenger .22 in great shape stock has barrel band. Donnyfl adapter extender with shogun that mite go with it. And pellets if don’t trade for another 22 with discovery vt-2 4x16x50 scope. Message me for more photos or any questions

Do you guys rotate liners?

I've been watching Ted and Matt and all those youtubers who are shooting the impact and have not seen one video of them mentioning about rotating the liners for the best accuracy. So I guess they don't? What i mean by rotating the liner is, when the liner is inside the sleeve. If you turn the liner inside the sleeve say about 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock, and back to 12 o'clock. Your poi will make a circle. So say when the liner is 12 o'clock and is hitting to the right, wouldn't that open up as your range is further making that 1 in to the right, be like 5 inches to the right?
Just interesting to know other options on this. Or it doesnt matter and just insert the liner and just shoot. I have tested rotating the liner and I always get a circle poi. This is at about 30 yards only. I have not tested this out to 100 yard to see how big the circle open up the further out you go. Cause right now I dont have a 100 yard range to test out.

Tuning  My MagnetoSpeed chronograph finally arrived! Plus a quick test of my Prod and the Factor RC power dial.

It didn't take me very long to get the MagnetoSpeed set up on my two PCP guns, a Factor RC and a Prod / Marauder Pistol, both in .22 cal. Once the spacing of the Bayonet and the number of magnets was determined for each gun / pellet / speed combination, I got zero errors in 90+ 22 cal shots. See this link on AGN by fe7565 on how to use the magnets, which makes the Sporter version of the MagnetoSpeed work with pellets and 22 rimfire at half the cost of the V3. Their specs say centerfire cartridges only with the Sporter.

I found that with smaller and lighter pellets two Neodymium magnets were needed on each of the two internal magnet positions. The sensitivity was usually set to Hi 2 but with the Monsters it worked better at Hi 1. With the bigger pellets and faster velocity settings, one magnet on each spot usually worked well. The design of the clamping surface seems to tip the bayonet up slightly on my straight sided straight shrouds, so I put a shim under the front part of the bracket to tip the bayonet down until it was level with the bore line. I would like to find a light weight but very rigid aluminum tube that barely fits inside the bore for alignment. My cleaning rod is too heavy and has too much flex to make it a quick process. Though, once the settings and spacing are determined, you don't need to check the spacing again with a rod. I found that inserting the rod with the muzzle pointing up gave a more accurate clearance check. It won't work at all without the magnets, no matter how close you get the sensors to the bullet path.

I haven't tried it yet with .177 pellets as I rarely shoot my .177 guns anymore, but will do a test later and will report back. If I was serious about this hobby and had thousands invested in gear, I would probably get a radar style chrono like the FX that links directly to my phone, but this is great for what I want right now, plus it works with my powder burners as well which the FX would not!

Factor RC 22 Cal

These numbers were with the hammer spring set to max, using the three position power dial and the regulator set to 140 BAR for everything. The bottle pressure was kept between 2900 psi and 2200 psi. The Factor RC is as shipped from the factory with no mods. Note: I did take extra care in firing the strings for accuracy as I already knew that these three pellets would shoot well at 50 feet. I will test some H&N slugs soon.

22 CPHP 14.3 - Power at #1 - 10 shots - All shots touching at 50 ft (Max distance on my indoor range)

22 CPHP 14.3 - Power at #3 - 10 shots - The group opened up about 4x larger
  • High - 984
  • Low - 972 (Only one at this speed. Next lowest was 976 for an ES of 8)
  • ES - 12
JSB Jumbo Heavy 18.3 - Power at #3 - 5 shots* - All shots touching at 50 ft
*I was running out of JSB pellets so I stopped at 5 shots. I only sot the JSBs at power dial #3 as I had no interest in shooting them slower.

22 CPHP 14.3 - 2600 psi down to about 2000 psi - 10 Shots into about 3/4" CTC at 50 ft.
Velocity dropped steadily with each shot. My Prod does not like the CPHP. The Meisterkugeln shoots the best of all my 22 cal pellets in the Prod. I will be running them across the chrono as soon as my next shipment arrives.

Weihrauch Vintage vs new models

I found a 70's model HW35 maple for sale that looks good to very good condition in the pics, and now I'm interested. Mechanical and quality/accuracy wise, are the old ones any better than the new ones? I'm not a collector, and am looking for function, and don't really want to pay for a collectable if it doesn't give me a 'better shooting ' rifle. Any words of advice or wisdom?

Meet Ranger Dick

I'm thinking many of you remember Ranger Rick when growing up... A friend to all the "furry forest friends". I realized recently he's still around, well... I have dubbed my Brocock Ranger XR - "Ranger Dick". 'Cause he ain't friendly to any of da "forest friends" or any of the critters around farm fields, or back yards, etc etc... 🤣

You may have noticed a few replies where I have added my two cent... Well, actually - 3 1/2 cents, with inflation and all... 😳 Anyway, I thought I would share a little more about my experience so far with my Ranger.

I have had mine for a little more than months now and I really like this little rifle. Yeah, I have a couple pet peeves with it, but one must remember what the Ranger is intended for.

Peeve #1 - The folding stock arrangement. It rattles so annoyingly, that I just had to do something about it. Most of the rattle is the stock itself. I'm wondering if Brocock is using a "commercial spec" stock even though the "tube" is mil-spec. So, I measured the "tube" just to be sure and swapped the stock out with a "Magpul MOE SL® Carbine Stock – Mil-Spec"... Ahhh, much better. This stock has a couple spring steel straps in it to snug things up (I have used these before) and with Magul's quality products... Now, just the folding hing moves a bit. Maybe I should go measure the supplied stock to see what the tube opening is? 🤔

Peeve #2 - the slop in the hinge. Oh wait I covered that in "peeve #1. 🤣 Really I am being nit picky.

This Brocock Ranger XR is extremely accurate. I experimented with 15.89's, 18.1 and some H&N 21 grainers (from what I see here I'll give some CPHP's a try too). This Ranger shoots 'em all very accurately... As long as I don't drink too much coffee. Speed of course changes some; I need a new chronograph - I have had bad luck with those "reflective" POS's... They didn't stand up to my tantrums very well either. 😁

Anyway, The Ranger XR is a great little rifle. Accurate out to 50 yards easily. And I have "knocked down" Starling sized birds out to 79 yards (best so far).

So, I'll quit rambling here and attach a few pixs, including my Ranger with the new stock.

Happy "pesting" ya'll.

Mag-fed springers - good idea when shooting PBA?

Hi,

I am looking into getting my first .22 air rifle, after my Daisy 880 is showing a lack of power against the critters that destroy our garden - clearly need something in the range of 15 to 20 fpe. However, due to intending to use it for pest control purposes + backyard target shooting and having neighbors, it also shouldn't be too loud, so some kind of noise suppression is necessary and for this reason .177 won't do, as I'd have to go supersonic there.

And when I look around for things that fit my budget, it turns out that there are some really cheap break barrel options (e.g. Hatsan AirTact, Gamo Wildcat Whisper), and the next group appears to be mag-fed break barrels or underlevers.

So I am wondering, are these even an option for me? One issue is that I want to minimize the amount of lead in my garden, and thus would prefer shooting mostly PBA at targets.

Now I am aware that some pellets in the lead-free area have rather odd shapes and sizes - e.g. the Crosman PowerShot Gold Flight is extremely long and barely fits in my Daisy 880 breech, and the Gamo Luxor Cu is just crazy (BTW: not recommending, it behaves aerodynamically just the way it looks), I would assume that I will get problems with the magazines rather early than late. But as one example, with Gamo I can't get the Maxxim or Fusion noise suppression and the recoil reducing rail without also getting the magazine.

So I wonder, can some or all of these also be fed without using the mag, if necessary because either my mag broke or the pellets are simply too big? Or is that impossible or dangerous? Does this differ between manufacturers, or if it's a breakbarrel, I can just use it with the mag removed and insert pellets into the breech by hand or pellet pen? If this does not work conveniently, I can at least already strike out anything with a mag from my list (and might then go with the Hatsan AIrTact, as it also has open sights so the scope isn't a single point of failure, and if it breaks, it wasn't expensive anyway).
