New Member - New Rifle… Jumped back in with both feet.

Hello Gents’ and Ladies if you’re in here as well. I made a big DIVE back into premium airgunning today with the purchase of a ew FX Crown Mk II, .22, 600mm, Arctic Wolf with an Athelon 6-24x50. Oh my God they have become proud of these top level guns. My last air rifle was a Daystate X2 PCP about 16 years ago and long ago sold.
Have been / still am an enthusiastic powder-burner and reloader of many cartridges for both plinking and Hi Pwr precision paper shooting. Don’t have any plans to hunt.
I have to say, though, that the Incredible level of Precision, Accuracy, Shot Counts, Variety of projectiles to pick from and ability to Tune on a specific rifle to experiment and maximize the results is Really intriguing for a shooting “Geek” like me.
I have everything coming in my direction now except the portable Air supply.

I am Excited as Hell and will look forward to interacting with this Great Community of enthusiasts you have got Here on Air Gun Nation

FOUND Want to sell (or Trade) - Akela .177 (Trade pending)

I'm moving and cutting back to just 2 guns. I was going to keep this as a back up gun to my TalonP just because of how it looks, but it is just too different of a gun.

Haven't done much to it (other then the stock finishing) I did cut the spring back to get a much better shot string. Right now it's set as follows:

TP full open - 10.5 Crosman box 70 shots between 890 and 930 from 3000 fill. It a single hole gun at 25yds with the Crosman's.
With about 2 turns of the HS it will shoot the 13.4's at 900fps.

Has 3 mags and the Buckrail Scope Rail/Shroud bracket.

$400 plus shipping to you from 21009.

Or would like to work a trade on either another TalonP or other small .22 or .25. Depending on the deal the scope could be included.

paypal is dead to me.

At this point I deleted my account with paypal. I wish not to dwell on their policies, what they may do or not do etc. I prefer to focus on positive changes. So what are my options? Venmo is paypal light, Zelle is a possible answer that I will look into. USPS money orders and Personal checks. I believe I can make it work. Sure, I'll have issues buying stuff on delayed payment plans. I just can't have some entity hanging nefarious possible actions over my head. Someone screwed up there big time, Either the company approved asset seizure as part of their conditions of use to be arbitrarily applied as they see fit or some wingnut in their employ came up with that by mistake and a superior approved it! Either way , I can't accept that level of malice or stupidity.

.177 FX Dreamline Classic - an FT alternative?

Early this year I bought a new .177 FX Dreamline Classic in Walnut with a 500mm STX Superior (Super Lite) barrel. I only really bought it because Joe @viperjoe had it for such a good deal (under $1000) that I wanted to see if all the hubbub about .177 FX not shooting well was true, or old wives tales.

I had shot my newby AAFTA matches last year with a .177 Daystate Pulsar, and the gun is very accurate and shot the 10.65 H&N very well at 910 fps. I've only shot maybe 5 matches total, and my last one at the Saguaro Classic at Rio Salado in AZ my first round sucked, but my second was comparable to most of the top shooters.

Anyway, shortly after that I got the Dreamline. And stashed it in the gun cabinet and forgot about it until after EBR. Until this past Sunday. My Pulsar shot the 13.4 JSB RDMs pretty good, but shot the H&Ns better and didn't like the 10.3 JSB at all. I wanted a gun that would shoot the 13.4 RDMs for their wind bucking abilities. So I scoped up the Dreamline, tuned for 820 fps, reg. set at 85 bar, got the rough zero in my backyard at 14 yards, and went to my shooting spot.
Set a target at 50 yards. Shot a few burners, then shot this 5 shot group, 50 yards, RDMs at 820 fps. Light breeze left to right...
This was the VERY FIRST GROUP that I shot!!! SCHWING!!! That's my pinky finer...

I shot about 200 rounds, and was trying different wind holds and comparing to the Pulsar with 10.65 H&Ns. Definitely better the RDMs by a considerable amount. Some groups like this one, some not quite as good, but all would fit under a dime. Looks like I have a different FT gun for this year. It is very light, so off hand is harder, and I already suck at off hand, so perhaps I'll add a weight up front.
Oh, and the answer to the Title question - yes, FX Superior liners CAN shoot .177 accurately...
;)

AoA Pre-Owned Withdrawals……

I’ve gotten used to spending my Friday evenings browsing the used items posted at the end of each week. It always gives me a great reason to rationalize my need to buy just one more airgun. I’ve also acquired some amazing vintage pistols over the past year.

But, I haven’t seen the Pro Owned section updated with new items in almost a month. I’m like a crackhead jonesing for my fix. LOL

Am I missing something? Slug accuracy = terrible!

I finally jumped on the slug bandwagon and boy did I spend a lot of money for some terrible accuracy!

Can you validate if you're having the same experience? Or if I'm missing something, I'm happy to hear any suggestions.

Summary: After some pretty extensive testing, the best slug groups are 200% larger than my average pellet groups.
My benchmark target is at 75y. I can consistently get 1" groups at that distance with various pellets. On good days, 1/2" groups are common.
The very best slug performance I've been able to eek out is with the .22 .217 25g JSB Knockouts. Those groups are inconsistent and average 1.5-2".
The slugs that don't perform so well produce outright hysterical groups. Like 5" at 75y!

I understand slugs like higher velocities so I've focused most of my testing in the velocity ranges between 950-1050fps.
I've tried lubed and dry. I also tried several combinations of reg pressure, hammer spring tension, and valve travel limit on the FX rifles.

My objective: The local benchrest match has 3 classes (low power pellet, high power pellet, and high power slug). I'd like to find a slug setup to allow me to shoot the slug class competitively.

I dont think finding a reasonably accurate slug combo should be this hard (or this expensive). I'm on the ragged edge of giving up on this whole slug thing.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Slugs I bought:
.30 50g Knockouts
.22 25g .216 cal Knockouts
.22 25g .217 cal Knockouts
.22 30g .217 cal HN
.22 23g .218 cal HN
.22 FX hybrids
.22 25g .217 ZAN
.22 30g .217 ZAN
.22 -> A couple varieties of Neilsen slugs

Rifles I tried:
FX Impact 22 (smooth twist, superior liner, superior heavy liner)
FX Impact 30 (smooth twist, superior liner, superior heavy liner)
Taipan Mutant 22 (CZ barrel)

Velocities tried:
850-1050fps

Dry Firing Taipan Veteran

I have recently purchased a Taipan Veteran from one of the members of this forum and I am familiarizing myself with the operation of the bullpup. I come from the PB world and certain models had caveats regarding dry firing.
Am I able to (can it damage) dry fire (press the trigger) my veteran with an empty mag cylinder in the place or will it cause any issues? I am awaiting my scope to arrive and really want to check out the trigger based on all of the reviews raving about the trigger. Ultimately I don't want to damage it by being impatient.

Cheers,

-PJ

My Crown Continuum seems grumpy

This past Sunday, I took the Crown Continuum to the range with my Impact M3.
I shot 50m with the Impact earlier and confirmed that it was a very good group.
Then I shot 50m with Crown.

Oh my god!
There was almost no wind, but the bullets were scattered about the size of a fist.
Changing the bullet velocity did not change the result.
After I got home, I removed the barrel, cleaned it, and replaced the o-rings.
Adjusted the position of the superlight barrel spacers with reference to AEAC.
And finally, I prayed that he would make me feel better.
I will test again next week.

My Crown Continuum
.22 500mm barrel
reg 140bar 910fps
JSB 18gr pellet

Backyard shooting, legalities and pragmatics.

My intent in starting this thread is to get a pretty broad ranging conversation going about the topic.

Is it legal to backyard shoot where you live?

How do you know?

How did you find out?

Where does the line between being a good neighbor and being strictly legal get drawn?

Theres safe targets and then there's backstops. If you shoot in yoir bsckysrd what do you do for the latter?

Have you ever had a neighbor complain even where you are safe and legal?

Did you talk with your neighbors before setting up your backyard range?

If you limit yourself caliber/fps/fpe wise, how did you come up with those heuristics?

-------

I _believe_ I'm legal in my backyard, but I'm thinking through all these other questions before I start taking advantage of it, and would like other folks' thoughts/thought processes.

Webley Stingray Deluxe Carbine .22

Shot my Stingray today. Almost got 10 in 3/8 ctc @ 25y but for one I didn't concentrate on. Not bad for just grabbing some CHP and trying once. We can do better but this was satisfying enough. While one of our sons cooked dinner on the grill.

Pretty translucent walnut stock. Home made delrin guide. Stock spring and seal. I think it makes 14 or 15 ft lb. Pretty snappy. Honed and adjusted trigger is crisp. Nice. A vintage Tasco Airgun scope. 2-7x32. Abandoned the BKL one peice mount for two single strap BKL recently. Rifle itself is about 6.8 lbs. Sweet little rifle. Mint.

Adjusted the scope on my rare 1985 BSA Mercury Challenger carbine .22 as well. Does what you expect from a BSA barrel. Beautiful gun. Easy handling. Period Bushnell 4x airgun scope in BKL

2022 AAFTA FT Nationals Rifle Day Two Rifle results

2022 AAFTA FT Nationals Rifle Day Two Rifle results

Well, I couldn't hold on to the lead on day two. Between a little wind, two mental mistakes and a trigger that was sticking my very worthy partner for both days James killed it!

He got me by three points.

My team did well, taking first place.
David Alsup, Paul Cray, Lauren Parsons, and Me.

I tied THE Ken Hughes in piston for second and we had a shoot off. We both hit sitting, both hit kneeling and then standing (heart pounding because it was my second shoot off in FT) I steadied and shot. The target fell, another 10-15 seconds went by and Ken shot. The target didn't fall.

What a great match, tons of fun. If you have the opportunity to join Puerto Rico for a match you should really consider it!

New use for tin lids.

I finally made it to my AR house today after 18 hours of driving. I was shooting BB guns off the deck and about to drink my beer when my wife says, "stop! I think there's a yellow jacket in your beer".

I swish it around and sure enough there was. I dump the pissy bastard out. She literally saved my life. Over a thousand people a year die from yellow jackets stings inside the throat every year. She offered me the one straw in house to prevent the possibility of me swigging another yellow jacket down. There seemed to be many attracted to my open beer and I was certainly was having more.

Knowing how tough it is to look manly while drinking through a straw I found a much more masculine solution utilizing pellet tin lids🍻😉
