How tough is it to shoot coyotes in the dark?

For those who have followed and watched my videos will know that I have began to shoot rats and left the bodies for coyotes to feed in hopes to ambush them.

Here is a writeup from the last couple of nights that I would like to share with you if you are interested to know what happened in the process.

I received a text from the farmer telling me that the coyotes are back and they had destroyed 5 of 8 chickens that were kept in a large outdoor fenced cage. 3 or 4 coyotes were digging the ground to gain access in broad daylight according to the owner. So I was asked to lend a hand to dispatch the coyotes.

My last attempt at a coyote at this location was 11 months ago where I missed (Coyote#4 video) the shot. So I was eager and excited to give it another go again.

I went there Thursday night for a quick set up of my blind inside an open barn facing the field where I bait them before. I shot a few rats with my HW100 and Hades pellets, but only collected 3 and left them for bait. Set up my trail cam and then went home.

So I was very excited to return Friday night to check on my trail cam as the three dead rats were gone. I opened the trail cam to retrieve the memory card and found out the batteries were dead. Damn...Did it even record anything? 1st sign of negativity. I turned on my laptop and inserted the memory card. My laptop battery was dead. WTF. 2nd sign of negativity. This was not going well. So I had no idea when and if the coyotes had came around to take the rats.

I wasn't happy with myself of not being prepared with back up batteries for my trail cam and of course charging my laptop beforehand. Things were not going smoothly and I just had a bad feeling that my hunt for the coyotes would not be a positive one.

So I gave up and just set up with my HW100T to shoot some rats so I can gather the bodies and leave them for bait. By now it was already 8:30pm. Luckily rats were coming out in the open and I was able to tag 11 rats and collected 7 big rats. 4 ran off into the holes and area where I couldn't access them.

By 9:35pm I heard coyotes howling in the area so I quickly packed up my gear, left the bait in the field where I had previously ranged out 25 yards from the blind. I moved my vehicle out of the way and settled inside the blind with my FX Impact MK2 with the Pard007S night vision clip on scope. My ammo of choice was the H&N 27gr Gen 2 slugs.

I had set up my shooting table and chair inside the blind facing the field thru one of the windows. Hot tea in my thermos and some energy bars in my pockets. I was ready to grind out for at least 3 or 4 hours until I see some action.

So the wait begins... An hour past and nothing. Then I saw something moving low on the ground. I quickly turned on my Pard007S and saw a rabbit about 15 yards in front of me. I filmed it for a bit, thought about tapping it, but rabbits are not on my list to pest at this location.

If anyone has done night time coyote hunt in the cold with an airgun will understand how tough it is to sit there in the dark, afraid to move around too much with fear of making too much noise. When you are in the dead of the night, every little movement you make like shifting in the seat or leaning of the table get amplified 120 percent. I never realized how my table squeak at the joints and how noisy the seat cushion becomes when I move my butt. Very stressful as I didn't want to make any unnecessary noise to alert the coyotes if they happen to come around. On top of that, cold and fatigue creeped in fast and furious, a feeling I have had and experience in the past with coyote hunts.

Another problem I faced was the inability of my eyes to see in the dark without using any night vision gear. As you may have known, you get temporary blindness every time you look thru the lens so I tried not to scan the area too much with the NV. I would just sit there quietly (trying to) and stared out the small window into the field hoping to spot some movements. Anyone who says hunting in the dark is easy with NV scope is full of crap.

So the clock ticks on. At 11pm, I saw a white figure moving thru the fence into the open field. OMG, a coyote had finally appeared. I quickly and quietly got into position, leaning over my Impact. One finger pressing the external IR with my left hand and power on my Pard007S with my right index finger. With the narrow FOV I finally located the coyote to my left. I pressed record and chambered a slug, ready to engage. By now my heart rate had spiked into overdrive and I thought I was having a heart attack.

I took one quick breath and had my cross hair on the forehead of the coyote. At that moment two things came into my mind. Should I squeeze off the shot now or should I wait till the coyote moves to the baits? I paused and hoped that it will go to the baits and may be the other coyotes would show up as well. I had 7 fat rats there for them to feed and I should have better chances of getting a good shot off. So I thought....

When I had the coyote in my scope view, it was sniffing the ground 2 or 3 feet near the bait. So I positioned my crosshair on the pile of rats and waited and waited... Nothing came into view and before I could say SH!T, the coyote was gone and didn't' return.

Another hour had passed and still no sign of any coyotes. I guess they had spotted my hideout and knew I was in the area. That was the end of this hunt. I reviewed the clip at home and the coyote was only in the footage for less than 6 seconds. Looking closely at the timeline, I couldn't have squeezed off a shot anyway.

I reviewed the trail cam footage from previous night and there were three coyotes in the clip with the dominant one (female) eating all three rats by herself while the other two coyotes stood by. Unfortunately I didn't have spare batteries for my trail cam so I am not able to film the 7 rats that I left there.

Yup, it will be tough to sleep tonight. Damn it is 3:19am now as I am typing this last sentence. Hopefully I will get these coyotes one day soon.

Thanks for reading.

Beeman R1 questions

I picked this up at a local gun show back in October. Don’t know much about them. Thought they had gold triggers. This is a .22 cal. Any information would be appreciated. It also came with an Anshutz sight. Just doing some testing at this point and it seems to shoot pretty consistant so far. Haven‘t used the crony yet. Looks like the breach seal is a little flattened. So far it likes the Gamo Redfire pellets best at 20 yards and, JSB 18.13 allmost as well. Again I know nothing about the history of it.

FX Impact - which hand do you cock with?

I shoot left handed, I’m right hand but left eye dominant, and have been shooting this way for 45 years. When I got my Impact 2 months ago I kept the cocking lever on the right side. I shot it like that for the six weeks and then thought, ”hey, I could make this a left handed gun so I should” and I moved the cocking lever to the right side. I shot it once that way and hated it. Just moved it back 30 minutes ago.

Not only did I keep reaching for the lever with my right hand but it took longer when I did remember because I have to remove my hand from the grip and then replace it and find the trigger again. With it on the right side, I never move my hand from the grip or finger from the trigger. On the bench I keep my right hand on the cocking lever and if I’m not on a bench I have a strong enough hold with my left hand it’s still easier to cock with right hand.

If you have time, watch this video:
Matt Dubber talks about having trouble with the lighter cocking motion on the Impact he was shooting and you can see him falter on the cocking motion twice in the speed event. It may have cost him the match. The guy that wins the event has an attachment that extends below the gun and attaches to the lever still on the right allowing him to cock with his left hand. The guy he beats is cocking with his trigger hand. The funny part is that both of these guys work for Utah Airguns and both could have switched the gun to cock with their left hand. I’ll bet money there will be shooters that do this next year…

Just wondering if anyone else has set their Impact up to use the cocking lever with their non trigger hand. It’s an easy change, try it to see if you like it as much as I do.

Optics: Why is it such a subjective topic?

Optics are such a subjective topic for many reasons as we know. I wanted to open this up as a safe place to share what the parameters we contemplated before “laying down the cash $$” for our next Optic purchase, regardless of price, <$100 />$3000, whatever...Details, details, details 😉

This is NOT a “brand” conversation so please refrain, as it will muddy the conversation. This is a personal experience explanation of “why” you purchase the particular optics you do, at the price point you did. Country of design/origin is permitted.

Patrick

is the marauder really that quiet?

The Marauder always comes up when googling for a quiet PCP rifle.

I own a Brocock Sniper .22, Akela .177 and a RWS Excalibre .22 all with moderators. ( Sumo).

I have been using my Brocock but wouldn't mind having something a little bit quieter.

ratter.jpeg

I have a small yard with VERY close neighbors, but I do have a safe area to shoot the rats that come to my bird feeders at night

If a marauder w/ moderator would indeed be a bit quieter I was thinking about getting one as Amazon has a pretty good price now @ $369 shipped.

Thanks for any opinions

HW50S (Journey) - Krale! Dang You!

Howdy all!

I have placed my order with Krale for a WH50S in .177. All thanks to AGN for the help and education.

A Williams sight and two tins of H&N Match Baracuda’s headed my way as well.

What are my first steps upon receiving the rifle? Clean barrel, I know some screws need loc tite. What have people experiences been in/lbs on the various screws?

I like to document my time with my hobbies. I will keep this thread plugged in the loop! Thanks again !

Whack! Dropped 'er like a wet sock.

Ranged at 102 yds to edge of the field. She scoped in at 95yds.
Western Rattler .357, 125g NSA slugs, 880 fps, 215 fpe at the muzzle. Calculated at 817.5 fps at the target (95yds) equals 185.5 fpe.

Off hand, 95 yards, over the back of a slightly smaller doe. 😊 Hit the "Lights out switch" perfectly...

Enjoy.

Air Arms S510 .177 Performance and Maintenance Review

Yesterday, the weather moderated enough and the family had come to celebrate Thanksgiving on Wednesday, allowing me to get out and shoot some longer groups to complete some of the annual performance and maintenance work.

Featured in this review is the 2nd pcp I ever purchased. Acquired from Straight Shooters, it was originally in a green poplar stock. I used it so much that the finish got scratched up, and while I considered purchasing one of the beautiful aftermarket stocks for it, I always need a "go to" rifle so I just took the camo paint cans out and went at it.

In my opinion, and understanding that I own several rifles two to three times as expensive to acquire, the Air Arms series of rifles are too often overlooked, especially for first time buyers. These rifles are accurate, extremely well built, and virtually bullet proof.

This rifle has had a few modifications over the years. Probably four or five years ago now, I sent it to Scott Schneider at Motorhead, and he installed a HUMA regulator in it and gave it a total reseal. I changed out the standard AA fill stub that requires their proprietary adapter, to a foster fitting.

This rifle has never let me down when called upon. I was a little disappointed in the 51 yard test groups shown below, as I have shot much better ones with this rifle. But the two groups were very consistent, and I am going to blame it on the quartering and variable winds blowing around yesterday. At just under 20 FPE, I didn't see any point at testing it at more than 50 yards. If I want to kill something further than that, I will grab a bigger, more powerful rifle.

The Really Ugly Duckling - the .25 Kalibrgun Cricket Maintenance and Performance Review

Never really believing that I have much of a use for a true bullpup, nor believing they could ever shoot as accurate as a full length rifle, because I didn't have one in my collection, I purchased this Charlie Frear tuned .25 Cricket from another AGN member a few months back. I tested it with four different .25 pellets upon acquisition, but the 33.95 gr easily outperformed the others.

I hate the way it cocks at the back as it seems totally awkward to me. It is much louder than my more conventional rifles with threaded moderators. It is as ugly as ugly can be, but as far as power and accuracy, WOW. I guess beauty is somewhat in the eyes of the beholder. It is built like a tank and is very efficient from an accuracy & power plant perspective.

It didn't take much maintenance effort to check this rifle out as it has only been a couple of months since I went through the check-out and set-up phase at the time of acquisition from this site's on-line classified forum. The test results can be seen below for those interested.

.22 Daystate Red Wolf Performance and Maintenance Review

Up for discussion this time is my .22 Daystate Red Wolf, originally purchased in 2019 from Ken Hicks at SPAW. Ken set it up to shoot three different pellets, each on a different power setting, though I don't think I have ever shot anything through it but the JSB Jumbo Monster Redesigned 25.39 gr pellets, as my dope chart indicating scope clicks is predicated on the utilization of this pellet.

This rifle was one of the earlier rifles that had a probe/magazine issue. It also encountered a wiring issue relatively early on. Shane at AOA promptly fixed the electrical issue under warranty, as well as pinned out the magazine actuating probe. Until recently, I shot it utilizing a single shot loader adapter, or on occasion, CARM magazines. That problem has now been rectified with the release of the new Daystate flip open magazines and the tests shown below utlized the new mags.

About a year ago, I blew a breech seal out. The members of this forum talked me through seal acquisition and replacement, and it didn't turn out to be a big deal.

No good deed often goes unpunished,. This rifle was performing perfectly until I was in the middle of this annual maintenance review, and going to charge the battery, I accidentally pulled the wiring harness connector leading to the circuit board loose from the very delicate wires. Calling Shane at AOL, he gave the usual great professional service, talking me through how to make the repair myself and sending me the needed wiring loop.

I have a real love/hate relationship with this rifle. Without a doubt, it is one of the most smooth, laser accurate rifles ever manufactured. I just feel uncomfortable with the electronics and find myself feeling at somewhat of a loss when something goes afoul. My Daystate Wolverine, RAW, and certain FX rifles seem to shoot nearly as accurate, without having the delicate electronics to be concerned with. I never say never, but at this point, I am not certain I would buy another one, even with all of its great attributes and AOA's tremendous service.

The test data can be found below. This rifle is now certifiably ready for another year of service.

New member with question

I’m a new member here and new to PCP rifle. I purchased a new Daystate Revere 22. I really like it. It groups great but just about every time I shoot it my POI changes. For example I went hunting yesterday, zerod my rifle before I went it wasn’t too far off 2 clicks on the scope low and left. I went hunting got 1 squirrel then I missed a few easy shots. Had a target with me. Shot it at 30 Yards. 1 1/2” low and left. Checked my scope rings and changed the scope. Same POI changes. I don’t think my reg is leaking either. Any help would be appreciated.
