Damn You Eyes!

I was trying to see my Vixen 3 gauge before filling last night and that popped into my head...(Funniest movie ever?)
I'm used to squinting because I also have a Vixen Long and they share the same gauge.
Guess it's time for something a bit larger. I have a few digital gauges and a few more analogue I can put on there, but it's too bad Airgun Technology doesn't make their gauges a bit bigger.

Targets  NLA Field targets (lot of 17)

I have 17 used field targets for sale. Most are Gamo bases with custom faceplates. Included are the strings and rollers and a bunch of stakes. Local pick up in Lafayette, Indiana or I'll take them to the Toys That Shoot show in Findley for pick up. I can ship, but they are heavy and it will probably be too costly. Price is $275 OBO.

FWB124D Custom

Hi guys. I was very fortunate to acquire a Steve Corcoran Custom stock for one of my 124s. Cost me a 127S and a pile of cash but I feel it was well worth it.
The action is tuned by David Slade and it is definitely noticeable. Rifle shoots with a soft thunk and no twang. Trigger is set to perfection.
Had this puppy on my range for the morning and was amazed at the accuracy....with open sites to boot!
Anyone else out there with a pretty 124 that they'd like to share some pictures of??? Kindly enjoy these pics and think about how much time and effort goes into crafting one of the functional works of art.

Traditional Springers - what’s going on?

I’ve been watching the auction market and am seeing a resurgence for the traditional springer. Earlier German and British springers with the classic beautiful wood stocks are bringing prices I’ve never seen. Take for example the HW30/R7. These can still be bought brand new in the current “laser engraved” beechwood stock for around $300. For the most part the mechanics haven’t changed for decades. I’m seeing the older ones with the beautifully stained, hand checkered beechwood stocks bring double this and more. And not in “new” condition! I’m also seeing another resurgence for the old school diopter rear sight. This combination has always been my favorite. I’m just an “arm chair” marksman at heart anyway. I’d rather hit 3 out four with the diopter than everything with the scope. Don’t want to get up to pump anything up either. If I don’t feel like shooting that much, I can just look at it and smile. I would think the round table at Weihrauch would be taking notes. Evidently not. These are three of my favorites. The HW55S is about 50 years old, the HW35E is in 22 caliber and new last year and the HW30 has the traditional stock that is about 20 years old. All wearing the Weihrauch diopter sight. The Anschutz diopter also fits the newer Weihrauch 11mm dovetail. The HW35E is just about the last chapter in the traditional barrel cocker anymore. I think the more we talk about this the better chance someone is listening. I know there are some real dandy’s out there. Let’s see them.

Been awhile!

How's it going guys? It's been awhile since I've been on here. I'm still loving my Evol mini and think it's the perfect gun for me. Has never skipped a beat and impresses me every time I take it out. Paired with my 4-20x50 Helos BTR Gen2 it's just such a great, rock solid combo I've come to depend on.

20230404_081159.jpg

Curious what's new out there? Anything ground breaking since I've been out of it the last 6-9 months? I have no interest in another gun but just curious what cool guns I could have missed in that time lol

Huntsman on safari

Hit the backyard jungle yesterday with my Huntsman Revere Safari. Seriously, it won't quit raining long enough to mow, at least if I don't want to bury the Kubota to the deck in mud. Hence the jungle. Have had it out a few times shooting offhand with a quick & dirty zero, but wanted to get it dialed in right & start collecting dope. First, obligatory pics:

safari horizontal.jpg

safari vertical.jpg

Opinions to follow, but let's start with the facts.
- .177 caliber, all shooting done with JSB 10.3, little to no wind, 60-ish degrees
- 75 regulated shots, 18 fpe (AOA must have used this one for their published specs!)
- 13 fps extreme spread, 3.3 fps standard deviation
- 6 lbs 11 oz out of the box with unloaded magazine
- 8 lbs 7 oz with Odb 110C, Vortex Razor HD LHT 3-15x42, Sportsmatch high rings, dovetail bubble level, loaded mag
- 10 oz trigger out of the box, made no adjustments

Have considerable experience with the Huntsman line- Regal, Regal XL HR, & standard Revere. All have been accurate, pleasant to shoot, and trouble free. Only real complaint with them was the stock shape- beautiful, but couldn't get a cheek weld if using rings tall enough to clear the magazine. More of a jaw weld. Could make it work, but never really got used to it. Maybe too many years shooting open sighted guns, working the comb into my fat face to line up the notch & post. Tried using lower rings & the single shot tray only, but that presented other issues. 1- I'd at least like the option of using the magazine, & 2- with the comb now high enough for a cheek weld, the toe of the stock was too high, with only the point in my shoulder pocket.
The adjustable comb solves all that- the Sportsmatch high rings give plenty of clearance for the magazine, & with the comb adjusted to my liking, the buttpad is nice & square in my shoulder pocket.
Know some of you are recoiling in horror at the lack of pretty walnut, & I feel you. I'm a sucker for walnut too, especially if it has some figure. When they make me king, will decree that Daystate produce a walnut stock in the exact proportions of this Safari stock, adjustable comb & all. Best of both worlds. But let me tell you why I do like the Safari stock:
- The aforementioned adjustable comb. Lack of one is approaching deal breaker status for me when considering a rifle.
- Texture is great, really grippy without feeling sticky.
- While nothing touches figured walnut, I do think it looks pretty good.
- The changes in shape vs standard stock are to my liking. The scallop on the buttstock & wider forend put more mass in the center of the rifle. Coupled with a lightweight scope & the 0db, gives it an ever-so-slight forward bias. Have always preferred this for offhand shooting. Not necessarily because it "feels" better, or "points" better, or "shoulders" better- because my targets say so. The scores (or group sizes) don't lie. As they say, your results may vary. And mind you, we are talking a slight forward bias, not Kentucky long rifle with a 40" octagonal barrel.

Other random thoughts:
- Liking the scope so far. Good clarity, not high end German glass but pretty good overall. Will mostly use it as a clicker- very tactile clicks, really like the elevation turret (pull up to click, push down to lock). Tracks well in initial testing. Love the reticle, adequate hash marks for holdover should I choose to use it, but not busy. Center dot can be illuminated, will rarely use that feature but nice to have on certain occasions. It's the HSR-5i MOA version.
- Still think the Huntsman lineup - standard or Safari, regulated or not - is one of the safest bets out there for owner satisfaction, so long as you're not looking for a high powered rig.
- Daystate, love ya but you're way too proud of your magazines. They're fine, but not $120 fine. Seriously, knock that price down. CARM for the win. Appreciate that you include a single shot tray, though.

Paused during dope collection to print four 5-shot groups at 50 yards. Cannot tell a lie (ok I can, but won't this time)- didn't photo the fourth group. At 0.65", she just wasn't pretty enough. I'm so shallow.

Needs a couple clicks

Hawke scope company

Just like to hear other people stories about Hawke the company and the people who work for them. Mine is, At one time i had a Gamo raptor 22. They are known to be scope killers. I didn't know this at the time and the scope that came with it was all plastic, toy like so i bought a Hawke 3x9 50 AB lens. Now this was a scope!! but after a while i had broken cross hairs so i thought i had a faulty scope, Hawke sent me a new for free, Great now i'm back shooting. Wasn't long and again broken hairs once again but this time they asked me what gun i was mounting it on? I told them Gamo raptor and they said if i was going to mount a scope on it i had to go etched glass and for a very cheap break barrel i declined and told them i was going with a pcp so they replaced it gain and i have had that same scope for 3 years now works as good as the day i bought it accept i lost one of the turret caps.I got a hold of them and told them what i needed and they said they would take care of me, Sure enough i received in the mail today 2 caps free of charge. That shows me they really care about the people who buy from them! They cost 9 bucks on there site.

Compressors  SOLD WTS - YOUUsed Nomad I for sale

I have the original Air Venturi Nomad compressor that I purchased as soon as it was released (2017). It began leaking and going to 1000 psi and then dropped back down.

I ended up replacing all fittings, hose, and even pressure plug. Now it fills to about 2500 psi before hovering.

I'm sure it's an o-ring problem but I'm not that mechanical (plus I already bought a new compressor): this was a backup.

i am looking to sell it to a good home/hacker. It's been good to me. $100

Panthera - what level of accuracy should I expect to receive?

I have been working with my Panthera to get it dialed in. It is a 700MM version. The slugs I have been testing include the Zan 30.5 and 33 gr, the NSA 31.2 and 35 gr (all of the preceeding in ,217), and the GEN II Patriot slugs in 34 gr and 40 gr, and both .218.

The Indiana winds haven't been cooperative, I have yet to have a day where the wind wasn't 10 mph plus. I have now shot two groups of 10 shots each with four different power settings.

The best and most consistent groups have generally been from the ZAN 30.5 Gr slugs. Today's groups were the smallest yet and very consistent, in a wind of about 10 mph. As you can see, the two group 10 shot average at 85 yards was .80", The reg pressure is set at about 163, the macro adjuster at 23, and the micro adjuster at 3.5. Muzzle velocity is +/- 130 fps. Will probably back the micro off some more and test again.

Most of the other slug combinations were averaging 1.50 to 1.60 inches by comparison.

What level of accuracy should I expect to receive when I get it right?
