The Leshiy (classic) and the tiniest pills

My winter mission (set by my wife nonetheless) has been to craft a device for the elimination of rats that emerge in substantial numbers from a creek behind our house and terrorize our chickens, which live in an enclosure 80 yards from the back of the house. In the spirit of full disclosure, I can and have dispatched them with my M3 shooting Javelin 22s but my wife balks at the noise, fearing the effect that it may have on the neighbors, one of whom bears a striking similarity (both in looks and manner) to Nancy Pelosi. Although air guns are legal to use in my yard, I’m also not keen to launch bullets at 50-60fpe from our raised porch. So, this led to the green light to craft a more subtle 177 slug shooter, which I figured would be in the ball park of 20-24fpe…

My first attempt involved the purchase of a 177 compact barrel for my Wildcat BT, along with several slugs from Nielsen, Daystate, JSB and Zan. I’m pretty good at tuning the FX platforms but couldn’t get the Wildcat to shoot better than a 2 inch group at 50y. A far cry from my M3 in 22, which is cloverleaf at that range. I then tried the barrel in the M3 (after adding a shorter shroud), but the result was the same. Borrowed a friends Marauder but it wasn’t any better. Dug out the old TalonP and picked up a 177 barrel. That was a little better but still not acceptable (humane) and besides, I can’t hack the hammer noise. Last chance (which I figured was least likely to work) was the Leshiy Classic. You know, the old adage that slugs don’t shoot well from short barrels (in this case 350mm).

Some details on this unlikely winner: Stock 177 350mm barrel with extender and STO moderator. DIY two stage trigger mod, fore grip, fixed 10x scope and Huma reg. Tuned at 96% velocity for each slug weight tested. I’ll cut to the chase and state that JSB knockouts, Daystate Howlers and NSA 12.5s didn’t make the cut. However, the Zan 13s showed a lot of promise, with the caveat that the LC gets notably jumpy in excess of 20fpe. I then managed to get hold of Zan 10 grain, courtesy of AGD and lo and behold, that was the magic bullet! 118 reg pressure and 17 CCW clicks on the hammer gave 930 fps (~19fpe) and a sedate and accurate shooting cycle. I’ve always balked at the term “mouse fart quiet” but this is as close as I’ve gotten. 71dB on my meter 1ft from the middle of the gun, compared to my slug shooting M3 with Tanto at 84dB. I’m not able to fill past 260bar right now, but that gives me about 20 shots before it drops off the reg.

Here’s a pics of groups at 50, 75 and 110 yards. I clicked to correct sighting after the 50 yard group and there was no more than 4mph wind. The 110 yard group involved a duct seal target stuck to a tree. This enables inspection of the slugs, which you can see in the second pic, all fly true to 110 yards and have full expansion. In that pic, one is removed to show the side profile, along with an Intact slug… Remarkably, the 110 yard group is only 1.75 inches. I’m no Ted Bier and I’d be pretty happy with that from my M3. FWIW, around 1mil drop from a 50y zero at 4800ft elevation.

Apologies for the length. Pretty excited. Hope it’s useful.

HW97 Pacific Airgun Expo Score!

Went to the Pacific Airgun Expo in Placerville, CA this weekend and came home with an unexpected surprise. It must have just been put out because I didn't see it my first time around the tables. I snagged a 100% as new condition Beeman HW97 time capsule in...........ready?...........20 cal! Even came with this hard case and a tin of pellets. Everything about it feels new.

This gun must have been stored flat because there is no flair to either the heel or toe of the rubber butt pad. For those "righties" like me who are not fond of ambi stocks, this has the right-hand dedicated cheek piece. And for those of us who do not care for the scalloped underside of the butt on new HW's, well here it is....NOT!

No tax, no shipping, no waiting. SCORE!

Havent been active much due to life but im back

Life finally settled down and I went out to see John at New England Airgun to pick up some stuff I had ordered 2 months ago and purchase some other things

Those things were

A BD Taurus topped with a vortex strike eagle 4-24x50 ir shooting 185 gr at 950fps for 360 fpe for 10 shots.

A Huben .22 to compliment my .25 I topped this with a bug buster I had laying around for now.

An airacuda max .25 I topped with a helix

I picked up my huben 5kpsi hand pump, 20 tins of ammo and as I was leaving John asked me to shoot at the NEAC at the end of April and then proceeded to sign him and myself up, so guess I'm shooting.

Anyways, hope you are all well. I am glad the nightmare that was 8 weeks of no shooting is over !

Tomorrow I am going to zero at least the taurus in , probably the others as well.

My magical shop

I think i need to enter my shop on penn and teller.

Its amazing how a item just disappears in it.
( The latest of many times and things)
I had 3 seals a yellow, cream, and clear.

So like a few weeks ago i had all 3 a week ago i noticed i just had the 2 right in thete spot so where's the 3ed now . Looked high and low pulling boxes out with flashlight, even in places i know darn well not there but looked just in case i was fuzzy brained and maybe put it there for some crazy reason cause i did not wanted put up and in the spot with the rest..lol. sometimes i surprise myself.

Just ahead of this deal i just cleaned and reorganize up wall to wall so it's not like the shop was cluttered . If ot was normal cluttered up i could understand it getting misplaced.

Old age i guess .. lol. It'll pop up one of these years or another add to cart when really needed.

Morning out with CENTERCUT & the PANTHERA!

Got together with my pal Mike Bricker (Centercut) this morning after the weather kept ruining our previous plans. He's wanted to try his Panthera @ 200 yards & a new permission I picked up fit the bill. As always, it was great spending the time with him & getting a chance to shoot the new gun (.25, 600mm barrel) was AWESOME! Thanks Mike! I hope he'll chime in on this to list the specs on the Panthera (ammo type & weight, fps & other relevant facts). If you look at the picture of Mike laying prone, 200 yards ahead there's a microscopic white rectangle. In reality, that's my target board with Ten 8" targets on it. Kind of gives you a perspective of how FAR that actually is. The picture of the target shows MY first 5 shots trying the Panthera. The fact I could even get on paper at that distance blows me away, let alone that my first 2 shots were IN THE BULLSEYE!!! It's absolutely incredible how airguns have evolved in the last 2 or 3 years! Altogether, a stellar morning for me.
NOTE: Yes, I know the target is upside down. That's the way I mounted it on the stand (not intentionally) & not a fault of downloading picture incorrectly.

Springer POI: offhand vs. from rest

This is my first experience with a springer: HW95 .177 tuned by Mycapt65 to a smooth ~14.5 FPE.

Since I can shoot 15 yards inside and I have sighted in dead on at this distance until the weather (in MI) improves allowing outside shooting. For sighting in I tried to use the artillery hold with hand between forearm and front rest. I was able to get consistent groups with this method.

I have been practicing offhand (silhouette hold) and noticed that shots are landing ~ 1' to 1.25" lower than when the gun is shot rested. I still have a way to ge to improve offhand capability, but the pattern of shots landing on average lower is clear.

The only explanations that come to mind are that when rested I am throwing groups consistently high or I am pulling shots consistently low offhand. It is surprising to me that both trends are so consistent. For sure it's not the gun!

What type of shooter are you? - Happy Plinker, Driven Perfectionist, or Multi-Pumper Mega-Man?

I've had some fun conversations with @Hateful McNasty where he has explained that his guns will like CPHP, or else 🤐. I always test CPHP in a barrel if they fit the current power level, but I have never gotten very good groups at even 50 yards with them in whatever caliber. I totally get it, just wanting to shoot a can or tennis ball around the yard and keep it close, so it is cheap fun. I personally constantly push out farther and farther, and make the targets smaller and smaller, so I would end up shooting a golf ball at 100 yards (Like the Pyramyd Air Challenge, I guess). I have to know that when I "shank" a shot, that it was most likely me, and not the pellet or the gun.

So, this would lead me to believe that there are three camps of shooters (probably more, so let me know):
  • Happy Plinkers:
    • Definition: Shooter that shoots small targets and insects around the yard and has a grand time doing it. Will often invite neighbors who have never even seen an airgun over to see how much fun they are.
  • Driven Perfectionists:
    • Definition: Will sit for hours in whatever conditions necessary to test 1000's of pellets at different weights and velocities to find just the "right" combination for that set of equipment. This makes this shooter often isolated and not too much fun to be with most of the time, but can shoot an "impressive" shot on occasion. The driving force for this type of commitment may be a humane kill or a higher score or just a smaller hole farther away.
  • Multi-Pumpers:
    • Definition: A person who likes to be immediately "in control" of every shot, and doesn't mind "looking like Popeye"💪 to achieve this level of precision.

So, what am I missing? Are there any other "breeds" of shooters out there that require their own definition?

SkeeterHawk!!

Shooting in the back yaaaard ISSUES?

Does anyone that shoot in the back yard have a neighbor come over and question what your doing as your PCP sounds like a gun going off?

How do you deal with that ? What do you say? I looked at the local laws here in GA and it's totally legal to shoot a PCP rifle on your property. I explained that this is a pellet rifle and shooting targets. She still seemed concerned as her kids on occasion may walk through my back yard as it's easy access to the woods and creek crossing as I have a small bridge and makes it easy access. Honestly I dont mind. I dont want to stir up anything nor do I want to create any tension in the neighborhood. I didnt say anything to inflame the situation like hey keep your kids off my property or there trespassing or nothing at all. I do not want to stir stuff up. Regardless If I hear kids in the back I stop shooting and just call it a day. In this particular instance the kids were no where near my property or the back yard the parent still felt compelled to ring my door bell and question me as she heard me shooting.

I understand thier concern as I have kids too. Just looking to hear about what if anyone else out there has said or done in a similar situation.

The setting: I live on a flood plane so there are no houses close to me. My back yard is HUGE since its a flood plane there are no homes directly behind me for at least 500yds if not more. I have a house on each side they sit about 30 yds on one side and I have a vacant lot on the other and the next house is like 100yds away. I shoot from a window that faces out to the back of the house. It's all woods with a creek in the back. Kids from the neighborhood like to go back into the woods and play in the creek which runs behind my house.

NOTE: I added a picture of my back yard. For more context. I live at the End of a cul-de-sac which backs up to a wooded preserve (30-50 acre) flood plane. I see more dear and coytee back there than kids. BUT they do wander back there and I'm sure this summer when it warms up there will be more showings.

I have an old wheel barrel as a backstop to my zero targets. As you can see in the picture. Do i need to move it closer to the targets?

Tuning  Air Venturi Avenger Mods

Just want to share some mods I have done to my AVA. Yes people will say I did the crowning on the wrong end it's because I want to improve round feeding and the other end already has a slight chamfer on it already from the factory, grinding it would make cleaning up much difficult.

I started out with AE Swede's starter pack: shroud adapter + bottle adapter and tube block off + plenum
I bought the bottle regulator from aliexpress now they are available on his website as well.

Capture.PNG

s-l500.jpg

plenum.png

3.PNG

I didn't feel like going all "tacticool" by wasting $150 on a couple thin pieces and the chassis isn't aesthetically appealing to me either. I'm not affiliated with Aaron by any means but you can tell his stuff are well made(7075 aluminum will kick your butt if you try to drill it) at a very REASONABLE price. I have had several conversations with him and I found he's very knowledgeable and easy to work with. I understand people like hajimoto need to make profit to feed his family but his stuff is way overpriced and he promotes his products like they are the sh1t and they are better than the rest, anyways not a big fan of him.

I always keep budget in mind as this is a budget gun it doesn't make sense to throw $500 worth of parts to "upgrade" it, at the end of the day it'll just be a ricered out Honda compared to a well made Porsche like the Impact M3.

Everybody nowadays likes some CF stuff so I think for less than $30 why not then I bought some CF tubing for shroud and barrel. It just happened that the shroud is almost the same diameter as the stock one and the CF barrel tubing fits perfectly over the barrel. I epoxy'd the tubing to the barrel for more rigidity.

IMG-3207.JPG

After I installed his kit I wanted to make a reinforcement block that would shroud the port sections together as I didn't have a barrel band in the front at the time. It took me 40 hours of R&D and 6 iterations to finally make it fit like a glove.
IMG-2978.jpg

IMG-3190.JPG

Top 3 holes for shroud venting
IMG-3192.JPG

And I also 3D printed new barrel dampeners to keep it centered.

IMG-3193.JPG

IMG-3149.PNG

As I have mentioned above it's a budget gun so I made my moderator with a Costco soda bottle with some closed cell foam around a PVC tubing, it worked surprisingly well. For the bipod it's the same story just a couple sections of PVC tubing with street elbows nothing special.

IMG-3114.JPG

Now that the front is rock solid I moved my focus to increasing the air flow. I port matched the barrel port to the same size as the transfer port(whatever size your drill bit will fit into your transfer port that's the size I used). I did not want to fully take the receiver apart to work on the transfer port from the block as the top portion is threaded to open it up you will ruin the threads and have to tap for bigger size threads. I don't feel confident in doing this much work on a casted piece so I only worked on the barrel instead, honestly for a 22cal I think this will be enough.
IMG-3208.JPG

IMG-3209.JPG

The final mod that I just finished was to fill the buttstock with silicone rubber to dampen the echo from the cheap plastic. But in order to do that I hot ironed around the logo to lay down a bead of epoxy as it was leaking water when I tested it.

IMG-3172.jpg

This silicone rubber kit worked great. You don't necessarily have to use a vacuum chamber like I did as the kit states the mix will degas by itself I'm just doing it for extra insurance and finish.

1.JPG

If anyone wants to do this mod I suggest you keep the foam to save yourself some material and also to not make it overly rear heavy.
2.jpg

This should wrap up my adventure with my AVA. Now that I have my M3 on the way I don't think I will perform any more mods to this gun. As of how well it shoot and the statistics, I'd say it's as accurate as it can be at 50 yards, I detuned the regulator to only 1200psi, when at 2200psi it was shooting Crosman Premier Hollow Point Pellet .22 cal, 14.3 Gr @ ~850fps so I would guess it should be around 750fps now just don't have time to get it chrono'd.

If you could only have one CO2 pistol?

For you that shoot CO2 pistols. If you could only own one CO2 pistol. Which one?

My pick would be a 38T .22 the reasons. It's a .22, very fun to shoot. Accurate single action, a great trigger not bad as a double action. The history behind the two models. It almost all metal construction. The gun is not complicated to repair. 5 easy mods for it. The revolver has the weight, the size, the correct grips, the adjustable sights, firing action and all the features in which the pistol it replicates.

Oh did I mention how much fun they are?

Heathcliff and Gertrude

This might be dating me a little bit, but many of you out there still remember the great comedian, Red Skelton. This is inspired by him. If there isn't another bird a despise almost as much as the greasy invasive starling, it's the pompous ruckus grackle. The grackle is back in bigger numbers then before, maybe due to the mild winter in this part of the country. Woke up to a gray cloudy misting dismal day and resigned myself to a shootless day. But alas, the dreaded grackke was settin in the top of a tree a mere 50 yds away as if chiding me in his squawking voice. I tried to resist the temptation, but my trigger finger started to twitch! I grabbed my trusty 22 Mav Sniper and beaded in the grackle, Gertrude, sitting on the tippity top of the tree. Gertrude sit there squawking as grackles do presenting a side profile to me. I lined up the crosshairs on her wing area and pulled the trigger. Anchored her with nary a flap. As soon as I did this, her mate, Heathcliff landed in the same spot looking for Gertrude and like the compassionate gentleman that I am, I helped Heathcliff find her by sending him down to her! I used 27.5 gr .2175 NSA HP slugs fired at about 960FPS. The photos show on both the barely discernable entry and the blown out exits. No more robbing the bird feeders and chasing the protected birds away! Both Gertrude and Heathcliff together forever! And for the trolls---

Ohio Revised Code Section 1533.07 Protection afforded nongame birds. Effective: April 6, 2007 Legislation: House Bill 443 - 126th General Assembly

European starlings, English sparrows, and common pigeons, other than homing pigeons, may be killed at any time and their nests or eggs may be destroyed at any time. Blackbirds may be killed at any time when doing damage to grain or other property or when they become a nuisance.

(A) As used in this section "blackbird" means the red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), the common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), the brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater), and the starling (Sturnus vulgaris).

Arken EPL4 or…?

I’m in the market for a new scope and I am considering placing an order for one of these new “lightweight“ 30mm Arken’s…. Anyone here using one of these yet?
How do you like it?

I am still open to other recommendations for something similar/comparable as well. Looks like these Arken’s are 2-4 weeks out on shipping currently...
This will be going on a Brocock Sniper XR Magnum in .22 for reference and I’d like something with 20+ power but I’d also like to keep the weight down.

Thanks!

For those unhappy with their DonnyFL, "Fatboy" muffler

I've tried my Fatboy on several different guns, with little love, money fer nuthin. It actually sorta works on pistols (under 700fps). But yeah, looks a bit silly.

Messing around today, I took it apart, removed the felt or whatever the black stuff is that's wrapped around the baffle assembly.
WHAT, will work, as tested on my full length, RTI Prophet Performance I. Shooting at about 820fps.

Note - the info below was tested indoors, by ear only. No cheap, $50 gadgets, no million dollar, dB (proper way of writing the symbol) chamber and test equipment.

- The factory black (felt ?) stuff, wrapped around the baffle. Quieter than nothing, but not back yard friendly by any stretch (even at my low fps !).
- Nothing, just the big can, with a bare baffle. Not much difference than with the factory wrap material, slightly louder.
- Closed cell foam, around the baffle. Slightly...louder than the factory black wrap.
- Open cell foam, around the baffle. About the same as the factory wrap.
- Old Levi's, pant leg material, wrapped semi-tightly around the baffle. Woo, what the hell, this actually worked pretty well.

Now I can hear much more of the mechanical stuff under my ear, from the receiver, than with any of the other tests ! The sound is slightly softer also, much of the "crack" is gone.
Yes, the factory screen was and is still in place for all of the tests.

Worked pretty well in my case, give it a try if you have an old pair of Levi's (brand) laying around .
No guarantee implied !!
