FX  Barrel length vs regulator pressure & hammer tension

I have purchased the new FX Hunter Compact in .30, my dilemma is trying to find the idea balance for the gun, with its 395mm barrel. My goal is to shoot JSB Exacts 44.75 grain at around 880fps, whilst not causing turbulence to destabilize the pellet & waste air. Which way is best to achieve this speed? Would it be with a higher reg pressure & lower hammer tension, or low reg & high hammer? This is made easier in the Impact as you can use the front valve adjuster to balance the gun, but obviously not on the Panthera?

South Africa Results

I heard from Leo Gonzales today (e-mail) about day one of the WFTF Championships in South Africa. He mentioned just a few folks. In springer, Cameron Kerndt shot a 44! That's an amazing score. Well done. Also in springer, both Leo and Ken Huges shot a 36. Paul Cray in PCP shot a 36 as well. Lauren Pearsons shot a 40 in PCP. All these folks are from the US. Scores are out of a possible 50.

I looked on the WFTF web site and no scores are posted yet. If anyone else has any other information, please post it to this thread.

Good luck to all the shooters tomorrow.

So what’s the “next level up”?

Looks like there’s the $300-500 segment, the $700-$1k which are kinda the same but better branding. So what’s a next level solid non-china compressor?

Before you say ec-3000 I just returned mine due to a few different issues and won’t be getting another before I am not fond of the design of all the tubing sitting so close together

Question about using Pelletgauge

So I got a Pelletgauge in .22 a few weeks back and tried to size some pellets. I got a little frustrated with the process and have a question for those with more experience.

When you go to put a pellet in do you go from small to large or large to small?

Also - do you choose the size based on the smallest hole the pellet freely goes through? Reason I ask this is it seems many pellets fit right through one size and when you go down one the pellet 'almost' goes right through freely and will go through easily with just a little wiggle. I'm not sure which one of those two sizes is the right one to choose. Is it based on the actual diameter of the head, or just that the pellet isn't 100% concentric and needs to get past a bump.

Appreciate input from those who size regularly.

Thank you.

Western Airguns  Five months of experience with the Sidewinders.

Both Sidewinders, the .30 Cal and the .25 Cal have not presented any problem at all.

I have not used them a lot. I have been shooting the Wolverine HP and the Red Wolf, both in .22 Cal, the must.

Each time I take the Sidewinders and make a shot, the really first one hits exactly where I aim at. No matter if it is the first shot after refilling the rifle.

My other PCP's may hit a little bit different on the first two or three shots after refilling.

Now I can say that I do not have any other rifle that match the reliability on accuracy of the two Sidewinders. For hunting purposes, this is an important info.

Umarex  Notos Moderator is loose

I am now on my 4th Notos - Two for me and two for family members. I noticed that on one of them the moderator will rotate fairly easily but only very slightly in both directions with a firm stop at each end of the travel. Maybe a total of about 3 degrees? What could be causing that?

I haven't shot it yet but it doesn't seem to be loose as far as bore alignment goes, just that strange circular movement.

All the others did not show any movement of the moderator. So far they all like CPHPs and H&N FTTs, outshooting several of my airguns that I paid a LOT more $$ for.

Help selecting PCP HFT rifle

  • I need help in selecting a pcp rifle for HFT. I’ve collected air guns all my life & have always wanted to get into FT but couldn’t due to career pressure. This year I decided to take the plunge & I started researching guns. I’ve owned many Air Arms guns over the years (still have a TX200) so I naturally leaned that way. The HFT XTi50 looked good so I reached out to Pyramyd to see whether they would get them in but they just kept saying they didn’t know, eventually they recommended that I get a S510 XS Ultimate Sporter with a single shot tray from Rowan. Ordered the gun, ordered the tray (great product & service from Rowan), ordered a scope, ordered ammo. The gun came in & was broken: it shot a foot low at 20 yds, turret all the way up (tried two scopes). Contacted Pyramyd & got no reply for 4 days, eventually emailed AA in the UK & was immediately told that the breech was bad. They contacted Pyramyd on my behalf, long story short Pyramyd sent me what they termed a ‘new’ gun. That eventually came in after about 3 weeks with the to & from shipping, meaning I missed out on the event down in Ashland Oregon. New gun wouldn’t hold air for longer than a day. Again contacted Pyramyd, who again said they’d swap it for a new one. Again sent the gun back, didn’t hear anything for a week after they received it, reached out & was told that the guns are out of stock & hopefully they’d have one in over a month from now. Begged, pleaded, asked for a different gun, no help. SO, there’s another shoot in Ashland at the end of September, which I’d like to start practicing for & I’d like to get some advice on what to get since I’m now super leery of Air Arms (sadly) & Pyramyd. My requirements are the following:
  • More than 12ft/lbs , preferably around 16ft/lbs, that’s why I initially chose a S510 over the HFT500.
  • Not too long, I struggle with standing shots when the rifle is too long.
  • Adjustable cheek piece.
  • Adjustable butt pad.
  • Quick fill (this is why I don’t like any of the German/Austrian guns).
  • Single shot with large loading port.
  • Accessory rail for hamster.
  • No POI shifts, tried many many of the cheap guns over the years, never again.
  • Aluminum chassis & shroud style moderator would be nice as well.

“TACK DRIVER”

I was just reading some posts on thread:

Are all guns accurate?

I didn’t want to hijack the thread so started this one. You often read ”My new Mod XXXXXX shoots like a laser” or “My new Mo XXXX is a tack driver”.
What constitutes or is the criteria for both descriptions ? To me laser and tack driver would be like photo below, consistent group with a first pellet followed by the rest grouping no more than 2x the pellet diameter.
And as we have learned, every barrel will have a preferred pellet for ultimate accuracy. Some air guns are inherently accurate and are typically upper tier in price, which should be expected but what criteria constitutes laser and tack driver ? And at what distance ? Everyone knows group size typically expands with distance. To me, a tack, a lot of times that I’ve used tacks, they are a touch bigger or same size as a .22 pellet. So every shot would be dead on or at the worst, shave lead as it grazes the head.
Just curious.

JTS Comp1 Compressor

I recently ordered the JTS Comp 1 portable compressor from Pyramid Air. It came packaged in a heavy cardboard container with a Styrofoam block inside containing the compressor and the accessories. I ran it on 120 volt AC, not tried on 12 volt DC yet. It operates quietly enough that with it running sitting on my bathroom vanity two of my cats sat there looking at without being frightened off. That's pretty quiet! The fans whir and the compressor goes doop doop doop doop doop, not disturbing at all. First run with the hose plugged up to 4500 psi revealed no leaks so I bled the hose and got my probes out for the Evanix and Weihrauch rifles. Both reservoirs filled quickly from approximately 100 Bar to 200. The compressor came with some tools and spare parts. There is one fault, the fans come on and off with the power switch not with the fan switch button which does nothing but this doesn't hinder operation. The compressor is actually smaller and lighter than I was anticipating, not bulky or heavy at all, very easily portable. I have done 9 fills with it so far. The air exhausting from the case never felt warm. As it will be used to fill guns and not tanks (unless I change my mind and decide to spend even more money) it should last me a long time not being ran up to 4500 psi stressing it. Since it's brand new I can't comment on durability, that will have to wait on time. So far the JTS Comp 1 does seem to live up to expectations. I've already gotten to shoot a lot more than I would have without the compressor.

Pellet Kills

Newbie here...just getting into PCP. I'm wanting a .25 and was thinking I'd definitely want to shoot slugs, but now I'm wondering if I'd be perfectly happy with pellets?

It would mostly be used for varmints (squirrels, rabbits, rock chucks, maybe occasional trash panda) and birds. It wouldn't be super long distance...but maybe stretch it out to 100 yards occasionally.

Thoughts?
