Gamo  Better than expected tune up

I had been neglecting my gamo varmint 177 since I got my first PCP. Was reading about someone else who was messing around with a break barrel and decided, why not break out mine. Grab some pellets and headed out. Cracked it open and cocked it and remembered why it's been neglected. It's got a crunch of spring sound when cocking. Unruly recoil. And the twang it makes after being fired. Yuck

Having had another break barrel with similar issues and having fixed that one I felt confident in attacking this one. So I opened it up broke it down and added thin plastic shims around the tophat and the spring guide and inside the spring cylinder. Lubed up a few places and put it back together. Broke it open, cocked it and complete silence. Not a sound except the click of the sear engaging. Okay well that's way better than expected. Fire off a few pellets and zero twang. Also I have no way of knowing how much recoil was reduced but it seems like about half as much. With the reduction of recoil my accuracy has improved as well. Funny how when it's not trying to jump out of my hands I can hit what I'm aiming at.

Any way I just wanted to make a post about tuning up a gamo varmint and to let others who might own this same rifle and maybe want to the same, it is absolutely worth it. It is super easy to do and I would be happy to help with specifics should you have questions.

Happy gun, happy hunter

RTI  RTI Mora @ 50 yards !

I achieved something yesterday that I've never achieved before. Today with the RTI Mora .25 cal I posted three exceptional (for me) targets. I need to say these were all shot indoors so it's not something that I would expect in a real world scenario. However, I've never shot scores this high before at 50 yds.

This .25 caliber 700mm Mora / AEA 29.5 grain pellet combo, shooting at 975 fps, is absolutely spot on.

Two targets using the AEA 29.5s shooting at 975fps and one using the AEA 33.9 shooting at 935fps. There difference is demonstrable.

Ruthless Pathfinder XR

My first kill of the day was at 60 yards off the hood of my truck at the trees pictured in the background… I then moved into the building and shot off a rail from 50 yards away. I was murdering them, yes I missed, wind calls, little branches in the way, etc. But I managed to bag thrice the pictured amount. As you can see from one picture the cover was tight and dirty. The sparrow I took inside the hoop house at 25 yards. My most incredible shot of the day was at a range finder measured 111 yards. I thought what the heck, conditions were calms and the grackle was at the very tip of the leafless tree. 10 MILS of holdover and down it went. I still can’t believe it happened. And am not saying I could do it again. But it happened and I decided to cap the day with that shot. All kills and misses🙈, sending CPHPs… The landowner informed me that there is a fox preying on the chickens and asked if I would have a go at it. So tomorrow I will pull out the Ghost and send some H&N 23 grain HP slugs at 25 yards and set her up for some night foxing duty…

.30 cal Fx hybrids going crazy…..

I just got my impact m4 in .30 cal….
Picked up an assortment of pellets to try out,

1 tin of Rifle titans 50.61
1 tin of jsb hades 45
1 box of Zan br100 56
And 3 boxes of Fx hybrids at 45

The hades shot okay, we’re hanging up in the mag a bit 860 fps or so
Titans also okay, no hang ups, a bit slower on the same tune 840ish
Cranked it up to shoot the Zans at 860 - wow - VERY accurate. The only trouble is any more than 8 in the mag and it’s hanging up.

Popped in some hybrids same tune - they went crazy - 4 foot spiral - literally all over the place, 940fps.
Dialed the way down to 780”s, same story.

Very surprised at how poorly they did - completely unusable. I thought the whole point was you didn’t need a slug liner for them…..guess not

Huben  Huben newbie questions

Hey, so I ended up coming home from the Indiana airgun show with a new huben k1 .25. I’ve tried it out and realized this thing is a whole different animal. It’s nothing like anything I’ve shot before.
So I have some questions I’m hoping some huben owner can answer for me.
1. I hear these shoot slugs with lots of power and accuracy. Is this true? I hope as that’s my main reason for owning one.
2. What weight/brand slug have you found shoots well in it.
3. I heard somewhere to set the reg at 18 to 20 hpa for slugs. This correct?
4. Does the power adjuster need to be balanced or tuned to the reg pressure? Will it waste air if the power adjuster is too high for the reg pressure?
5. What FPE can be achieved in the 25 cal version without maxing it out and getting a low shot count?
6. I know about potential for jamming the magazine and the inconvenience cleaning the bore. Also the safety concerns. What else do I need to know? I’ve already ordered the ares loading gate.

Why do maximum pellet velocities differ between various guns?

I have noticed significant differences between the maximum accurate pellet velociy between my various PCPs.

My two Streamline .22s produce virtually identical groups at the same velocities (900 fps range), but my DRS 600 mm Classic .22 will achieve better groups with the same pellets at around 1030 fps.

Some online when I was considering the DRS, there were recommendations that the 600 mm should produce better long distance groups than the 500 mm, at the same MVs.

Is this the case, and can someone explain why?

PCP Rifle  NLA FX DRS PRO

For sale $2500 plus shipping excludes scope and mounts and angeld plenium gauge. It shoots great inch or under at 100 yards if I do my part with my slugs I swage on Corbin equipment. currently shooting .218 35.8 grain hollow ogive HP slugs. reasone IM selling is its just too heavy for the way I want to use it. and I would like to shoot even heavier slugs but limited by the mag.
I may consider tradeing the chassis for a walnut stock
Or may consider taking an Airforce Condor 22 or 25 in partial trade.

HAPPY TURTLE DAY!!!

As a kid, and now again as a retired adult, I find myself relating to Mother Nature's clock more than the human calendar. (I threw my watch away - literally - the day I retired and haven't worn one since - don't miss it a bit LOL!)

The warm weather "seasons" relate to when the snow melted and and everything comes back to life again. The migratory birds have their own obvious schedule, other things less so.

As a "hunter-gatherer" sort of guy I watched the signs to determine when to forage wild garlic, morel mushrooms, wild asparagus, and other stuff over the growing season. The blooming dandelions are a sure sign that the walleye were are running in the local river. Here, a new species of dragonfly emerges every couple of weeks and plants go through their blooming periods; it's like the ticking of a biological clock marking events that I'm watching for.

Turtle Day is the day that the pond has warmed up enough that the turtles come out of hibernation. To me, it's nature's official announcement that it is the end of winter and the start of the busy season. The snow-blower is put away and the batteries are installed in the boat. I'm looking forward to six to eight weeks of reasonable temperatures ideal for fishing, shooting and enjoying the outdoors before the bugs and heat of summer arrives.

I'm curious about different parts of the world, maybe you can share. I'm in central Ontario, Canada. Where do you live and are there any biological events do you take note of?

So, Happy Turtle Day to all!

Cheers!

Turtles 20+.JPG

Turtles are spooky, a few moments ago I counted over 50 sunning on the logs, there's still about 20 in the picture if you look closely.

Turtles 6.JPG

I'm being watched closely by these Painted Turtles... they were gone three seconds later. They get fairly tolerant (tame?) of me and after a couple of days and just watch me pass by without spooking.

There's also a few Mud Turtles and a good population of Snapping Turtles in this 50+ acre, spring fed beaver pond.

To Strip or Not To Strip

This is the question. Here are three examples. Top one is a factory finished Beechwood stock. Almost looks pickled. No color but a nice matte finish. I did strip it and it’s now the bottom one. Just received a new one (middle). They finally added some color to the wood. Much better. This particular piece of Beechwood even has some figure. I like it but don’t love it. The figure would be greatly enhanced with a strip and refinish. So the question is: Strip it or Leave it. Thank you.

Traditional Rifle  NLA Weihrauch HW77 .177

This is a Weihrauch HW77 in .,177 that was made in 1987. This sweet shooting rifle has the older 25mm piston, which in my opinion makes a much smoother shooting rifle than the newer 26mm pistons. I replaced the seals with Vortek seals and put a new Vortek spring in it back in October. Averages 860 fps with 8.64 H&N pellets for 14 ft. lbs. She’s been around the block but is still smooth and accurate as any HW77 out there. Price is $300. Payment by USPS money order, cashier’s check or PayPal (friends and family only). Shipping is $30 to the lower 48.

N/A  EVOL vs Epic two

I’ve been watching the Epic two videos and reviews and something jumped out at me. Is this rifle a copy or possibly a euro version of the EVOL? I recently acquired a Paradigm and have had it apart to have a look at the workings. There are quite a few similarities and a few differences. Of course every rifle has some similarities and there will always be some changes between them. Now I’m wondering if some of the parts would be interchangeable, like the balanced valve, barrels, magazines, air cylinder and possibly the stock.
From what I’ve seen there’s really no difference in accuracy, is the Epic Two the EVOL killer?

FX  Hunting pallet weight 25 cal

Outshooting the Gun?

I see the phrase “I’ll never outshoot this gun” pop up all the time, but I think this idea is sometimes misunderstood — or misused.

I’m not sure how everyone interprets that phrase, but to me, it sounds like people are comparing their own accuracy directly against the gun’s mechanical accuracy. A lot of people seem to treat this as a reason not to care about gun accuracy. You can see this mindset in posts like the first reply here:
1744525689077.png

But here's the thing: you and the gun are not competing. You’re not trying to “beat” your gun. You're a team. The shooter's dispersion and the gun's dispersion combine into the final result.

Even a less skilled shooter will get tighter groups with a more accurate gun. Yes, if your personal dispersion is 10x greater than the gun's, then the benefit of better gun accuracy might be negligible. As long as your groups aren’t more than 5 times larger than the gun’s, improving the gun’s accuracy still makes a meaningful difference — so saying “the gun outshoots me” feels like a misunderstanding to me.

Would love to hear what others think. How do you interpret “I’ll never outshoot this gun”?

RTI  Thinking of buying a Mora, compact

For any of you that actually own a Mora of some smaller caliber (under .25) version.

Per the title, I'm thinking of buying one, in .22. I know that these guns were more directly designed to shoot slugs.

My question, is, how are they at shooting pellets, in the 18 to 25 grain weights, at shorter distances, like up to 50 yrds. ?
I've done some searching, but nothing that directly relates comes up.

Mike
