HW80S Stock Finishing - Sycamore Wood

Hey Guys,
Bought a HW80S stock from Jim Macarri (ARH) a few years ago that was just lying around. This was Jim's prototype stock used for copying on his machine.
It's made of Sycamore which can stain blotchy if your not careful. Decided to finish it and have done most of the heavy sanding to fit me just right.
Added a Walnut pistol grip cap to try to make an otherwise plain stock look fancier.

Was thinking of using Tung Oil or Watco (light walnut) Danish oil to give the grain more pop. Likely will hit it with two coats of wood sealer to prevent blotchy staining if I go with the Watco Danish Oil.

Also, may stipple some kind of a hand grip, which along with being functional would add nice contrast the stock probably needs.

Another newbie with questions

Yep, I'm a newbie, both to air gun shooting and to this forum. I'll try to not ask too many stupid questions, but I know I'll ask a few. A little background so you can get an idea of where I'm at and where I'd like to go. To make a long story short, health issues forced me to move in town and sell off all my traditional guns. Yeah, every one of them. Since I could no longer hunt and since living in town pretty much prevents me from just stepping out the backdoor and doing a little plinking. I didn't see the logic in keeping all the guns.

Then, after selling everything off, the urge to shoot something got the best of me. I was given an old Crosman 1377 that is in pretty good condition with a suggestion to try air gun target shooting. I live about 200 feet from a wooded area where I can plink and I also spoke with one of our city council members who said that in this town, it is legal to shoot an air gun on my own property as long as no projectile leaves my own property. So, I decided to at least try air gun shooting to see if I enjoy it.

My first question(s) concerns the 1377. I have already contacted Crosman and using the serial number I know this 1377 was manufactured in 1997. With that in mind, what do you guys suggest I do to it? Are there any parts/pieces I need to replace to be sure the gun is working as efficiently as possible? Are there aftermarket parts I should install to improve the performance of the gun? How much "modding" is this gun worth? Or, should I just put the thing in the closet and kind of forget I have it?

Next, I got into online discussions with guys from two different air gun dealers and finally decided to purchase a Hatsan Mod 25 Supercharger QE in .22 caliber. It was literally delivered to my house a little over 30 minutes ago. I have done nothing to it except open the box. I know I'll do a thorough cleaning of the thing before I shoot it. My questions here start with the obvious one. Did I make a good purchase selecting the Mod 25? If so, what should I consider doing to this gun? Should I leave it as is, or are there aftermarket products I need to consider purchasing? Then, are there any tips/tricks I should know about shooting this thing?

I know I'll have lots more questions as I go along, but if any of you have anything to offer regarding either the 1377 or the Mod 25, fire away. And, thanks in advance.

To buy a springer or not to buy a springer?

Since my ratter recently died, raccoons and rodents returned to my wooden suburb home. I catch a minimum of one rat each night with a trap if I set them.
My preferred method of dispatch is my Sig MPX HPA. 177, however my compressor has been temporarily down now for a month.
This got me looking at fixed barrel springers. Should I have a springer for rats when air supply is not available?
I love that it's a one shot too because that's most likely what would be required each night. I like that they are heavy in weight and hard to cock, because even though I have all my guns locked up all the time when I'm not using them, I do have little ones, including a toddler.
A quiet .177 springer is such a better choice for nightly ratting here.
I been looking at the Diana 56th in .177 and posted this to see others thoughts on the whole subject.
I really don't need a springer, when my compressor is working, and will be working soon, and I'm trying so hard to unclutter. But that Diana 56th looks so sweet and it's a better fit overall. But I really dont need it, do I?
Any help much appreciated.

Tuning for slugs

Here is my take. I have a M22 with extra plenum and did some porting. I tuned for JSB KO 24.39 slugs. First find at what speed you get the best uccuracy.
Slugs like a higher reg pressure so that the velve will close quick and elliminate muzzle blast. It is more important with shorter barrels to have a higher reg pressure. My gun is sub MOA at 880fps. It can take a wile to figure it out. I start at 150bar and set the HS to my desired speed and shoot it of the reg. If you get a big speed increase below the reg pressure, you can drop it with 5bar at a time. Note your ES above the reg pressure and speed below the reg pressure. It is nice to be able to go below the reg pressure with plenty of usable shotes. If you get a big speed increase, drop the reg by 5bar at a time and test again after setting the HS to the right power.
I'm am able to get all my shots that's above reg pressure between 880 and 884fps at 145bar. At 150bar my ES goes op to 12fps and too low reg pressure as well, and accuracy gets worse at to low reg pressur. My sweet spot is 145fps. (My good Huma reg allso helps). Below reg pressure it slowly goes up to 890fps and then drops back down to 880 and suddenly to around 850fps at around 125bar. Perfect! And then even my China gun can out shoot most of the much more expensive guns. Good Luck!

What is the purpose of lighter pellets?

Hi,
I’ve only used cheap Crosman pointed lead pellets. Im fairly new to airguns. And I recently saw a product called H&N Baracuda Green. It is .177 and 6.48 Grains.

It is a light weight, lead free ammo. I understand that this would be used when you don’t want lead in applications where environmental hazards are concerned, such as animals eating them.

But other than animal consumption or other environmental hazard is concerned, is there any benefit to using these light alloy pellets? In plainking, pesting, target shooting or whatever use.

This is more out of curiosity, but I mainly just do 10 yard pesting.

LCS V/S Western guns Now what?

I thought the Western gun was supposed to be an upgraded LCS? I got my money down on the sidewinder in 22 caliber ,, The Huben is looking very good with all this stuff going on,,I just passed up a super good deal on a super good Huben 22 , I think I am already regretting passing that deal up,,,
I may have go back to the think tank and ask people smarter than me on the LCS/Huben/Sidewinder decision I am making,,,

New Daystate Huntsman Revere and a A+++ for Airguns of Arizona!

I ordered a new Daystate Huntsman Revere from Airguns of Arizona last Friday. I ordered by phone because I wanted a very nice, figured stock and not one of the run of the mill I've seen in some online store adds. The salesman promised me they would go through their stock of .22 caliber guns and pick me a nice one.

Well, not only did they go out of their way and send me a fantastic looking gun, but they also shipped it fast, and it arrived today!

No time to shoot it until late tomorrow, but there is a nice, detailed spec sheet from Daystate with some shots fired info and an additional target with a tight 5 shot group from AoA.

This is my second air gun from AoA and both experiences have been fantastic!

Pics and a quick review to come soon...

World's Largest (unintentional) PCP!

One of my longtime hobbies is Civil War artillery reenacting. Our unit owns a pair of three-inch Ordnance rifles. Uses 5.5 ounces of black powder and a 7lb lead projectile for target work. Here's what it shoots...
IMG_0014.JPG

One time we were target shooting and forgot to load the powder first... We have a 3,000 PSI steel scuba tank with a nozzle that fits the firing vent at the breach. A blast of high pressure air usually will remove debris from the previous shot that we can't worm or sponge out. Thought we'd try the air tank to get the projectile out of the gun. One guy holds the hose tight on the vent wearing heavy welding gloves. Another guy opens the air valve. The damn thing came out and flew about 50 yards.

Does this count as a PCP?

How Much Pellet Lube?

Have 500 JSB Hades, 18g, .22cal in a plastlc bag ready for lubing.
Will be using Ballistol as lube.
How many drops should I put in the bag, before mixing in the bag?
As a final step, should I roll the lubed pellets in a paper towel to remove any excess oil?
Thanks
BTW, to wash pellets put in 91% alchol overnight.
