barrel length question

I am wondering what are the determining factors for barrel length when trying to achieve the highest degree of accuracy in a given shooting discipline?

ADD to thread: with this question of barrel length also comes questions like rate of twist? choke? Free floating? Steel Bedded? Polished? and probably several other things i don't yet know about or haven't even heard about?

The reason i am asking, is i see shorter barrels used in FT applications and longer Barrels used in bench rest which leads me to believe at some point "more barrel length will hinder a field target shooter" and start to "benefit a bench-rest shooter".

I understand hunting in the woods / stalking prey where more barrel is more chance to snag things and make noise

i did find this thread on barrel length and speed of pellet: https://www.airgunnation.com/threads/min-barrel-length-vs-max-fpe.1274983/

SOLD Taipan Veteran .22

This rifle has a Lothar Walther barrel and is currently shooting JSB 18gr pellets at 880fps. Proven to be accurate with JSB 15.89, 18.13 and H&N 18gr. I have use slugs in this gun in the past and it did good with .2165 17.5gr NSA slugs.

The stock the gun sits in is a factory black stock. Aluminum pic rail is attached at the front. The stock has had some minor touch up paint on a few places.

Rifle has carbon fiber wrap around the shroud and fill cover. Planned to do the entire air tube as well but never got around to it. There are some minor marks on the rifle but nothing that stands out. Absolutely no gouges or scratches.

The shroud does have the 1/2 UNF adapter installed.

Comes with 4 magazines, 4 Orion 3D printed mag holders, and one fill probe.

Asking $850 shipped CONUS.

Pay pal FF preferred so we may avoid extra fees. I have plenty of positive feedback and successful transactions with many members. No trades please.

Thanks AGN

FX PANTHERA - .22 Cal 600mm - OUTSTANDING ACCURACY! - Who else has one? What are your thoughts?

When I first got my 600mm Panthera, I had quite a few people ask me why I didn't just get the full length 700mm. I have my reasons, and I think I made the absolute right choice with the 600mm, even if I had to wait a while longer to get it. I did a short little 3 minute video (below) with some insane shots at 190 yards.

Who else go the .22 600mm? What are your results? Best slugs? Best slug diameters? Settings? What is working for you?

I am shooting 30.5gr Zans and 30gr Gen2 Javelins to great effect. I am at 22 on the power wheel, micro adjuster about 3.75, and I'm running at 150 bar for right around 980fps with these weights.

Loaner project gun completed -

After moving my stretched P-Rod breech, barrel and internals to the Fortitude tube, that left me with a P-Rod tube. Had everything it took except for the 8" braided ss hpa line and a 4-48 tap.

Haven't shot her yet, but I'm going for a lot of shots in the lower 20 fpe region. We'll see, but I did have fun making the mis-matched parts work -

HFT Ranging tips?

I don’t have any, you?

I’m shooting hunter field target and I’m having difficulty ranging my targets so I have a few questions:

First my basic info.
I have an oversized wheel on my parallax knob.
I’ve set out targets at all the yardages from 10-20 and every 3-5 yards out to 55.
Some are regular targets, some are “eye test” targets with stripes/numbers/letters.
I try to get good light on them to help with the clarity.
I adjust the focus from the same direction (near to far) every time to get the same “edge” of the depth of field for my focus point.

When I go back later and verify them, I often find they need adjusting (not the 10-20 ones)

I just shot a match that includes target yardages in the match report ( I noted my range estimates during the match) and I did poorly ranging
past 30-35 yds: ranged a 55 yd target as 40, a 45 as 40, a 55 as 45, a 50 as 42, a 41 as 34, a 45 as 35 all on the short side.

Closer was better exc. for a 17 ranged as a 13, a 15 as 17.

I have 30 yds in my back yard.

Once you have your parallax wheel yardages marked, do you ever recheck them and need to change them?
How often do you check your range markings?
How often do you practice ranging? Ever? I felt like if I have the wheel marked right, it should stay right. Right?
Should I be making adjustments to my range estimates when the light is not bright?

I’m 60 and had Radial Keratotomy on my eyes 30+ years ago and now my vision changes as the day goes on.
Anyone else have these eye issues?
What is working for you?

I would appreciate any tips/ techniques to get consistent.

Curtis

Can someone point me to a "Slugs for Dummies" or "Slugs 101" write-up?

I've been trying to learn about slugs (through the forum, videos, other sites) and feel like I keep finding very specific information about specific slugs or guns. Does anyone know of any "here are the basics" kind of guides out there?

From what I've read:
Slugs like to be fired faster than pellets.
Slugs DO fire faster than pellets.
Sometimes choked barrels cause problems with slugs.
Slugs penetrate further than pellets.
Slugs seem to be primarily for long range shooting (but I've found plenty of reference to shooting slugs at only 25-50yds, too).

I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff, as I've been reading about them for a week now. Just trying to distill down some Slug Facts so my novice air gunning brain can parse down why/when slugs are a good choice, and any gotchas for when I try them out.

Scope wont parallax below 13yds.

Hey all.
Just got my rig out for HFT, newbie, and got out my rat resetting target and laser range finder.
Started at a close distance and worked backwards. From 13yds and out its fine but it wont parallax below that. If the impact point has no paint left, i cant see it. Im sure its club dependent but how detrimental is this? I dont really have the funds for another scope. Thoughts?

Leshiy 2 short comings

I’ve owned a leshiy 2 for a few years now. While it is my favorite of my pcp’s and goes with me pretty much everywhere I go (due to folding size and simplicity), I’ve always longed for better accuracy. While it’s accurate enough at shorter distances, when you reach out, it’s just not getting what it should for accuracy. While some would say it’s due to the revolver style of the action, and possible damage to the pellet, I think it’s something that those who own one will agree, and that is the trigger. While the trigger isn’t overly heavy, there’s quite the learning curve to using it. I’ve gotten much better with it that I used to be, but still nowhere near what I can achieve with my fx guns.

I can to this conclusion while visiting a friend that currently went the route of the Huben (and sold me his leshiy 2 25cal to boot), and I was able to shoot it. The design of the action is very similar in that it fires the pellet directly from the magazine, and yet, the trigger is superb, and the accuracy has been proven time and time again out to crazy distances.
I truly believe this is achievable accuracy with the leshiy also, but the trigger would need substantial work to get there.

So……why hasn’t anyone come up with a new trigger group to help remedy this? With the plethora of aftermarket parts available for these guns, why hasn’t the trigger been addressed? Is it just impossible to improve on?
Would love to know others take, and possible ideas.

Hard to load pellets in barrel

Have any of you experienced this problem? What, if anything, did you do the fix it? All of my other rifles pellets fir easily. I have an 22 Airwolf. The pellets are difficult to push into the barrel. It seems like they all fit too tight. Even .219 slugs fit too tight. All of the mechanical functions are perfect without a pellet. I'm getting velocities of about 800fps on High power. Any suggestions are welcome.

My ads say shipped CONUS but members want items shipped non-CONUS

Anyone else have this issue when posting in the Classifieds? Several times the last month, members have responded to my ads which say "shipped CONUS" and want me to ship to Hawaii or Puerto Rico. I usually ship UPS because the tracking/insurance is better. To ship to both is prohibitively expensive, and PR for example via UPS also requires Customs paperwork and who knows who has to pay the customs fees. The members from PR especially tell me how PR is a state and USPS shipping is no more there, but when I check it's like double what CONUS shipping is.
