Ten unfortunates today… Atomic XR

I had a few hours I could take, so headed down to the former dairy. It was raining on and off. The action was light, not many birds about. I shot ten today, the two sparrows and one starling at 30 yards. The remaining seven from the horizontal members in that high barn (54 yards). After my first two at 54 yards, I went up to recover the bodies. But the loft was sketchy, I felted like I could fall through. I took the picture of the two and headed back down. Set up again, 2.5 MILs of holdover and took five more! But, I wasn’t going back up there. I also missed at least five shots on sparrows and starlings. And wasn’t fast enough at least as many times to set up the shot in other instances. The Atomic XR was as usual, sweet, sweet, sweet. I typically keep my shots on sparrows and starlings sub 40 yards. But the Atomic has proven to be consistently accurate out to 50-64 yards. Enough for said critters, so going forward, I’ll will stretch it out just a little.😀

New person here

Hi. Just found this site. Blew my shoulders and had to sell all my archery stuff. At nearly 67 I found myself hankering for a new hobby. Voila!!! I have been looking at a Gamo Raptor in .177 for plinking and light hunting(squirrels, etc.,.). I am looking for general input, for example...I was thinking a heads up red dot for the Raptor. Good idea or not? ....and things like does anyone make a pellet tuning kit so you can find out what works best before investing in umpteen cases of "pellet brand x?"
Thanks, and look forward to chatting.

Springer vs PCP

I am sick of the money pit rabbit hole with PCP's. But I like the accuracy and no special scopes. I am a paper puncher and KYL's shooter.

So before I buy a compressor is there a springer that will compete with my .22 M-rod out to 50-75 yards, accuracy wise? Do I need a special scope, or will my Vortex Strike Eagle take the unusual recoil? Is there constant repair/maintenance like the PCP O-rings and etc? And the most important, how much is it going to cost. For simplicity, I want .22 cal.

Bill

I'm starting to see....

why people spend big bucks for some top tier guns. I've been shooting air guns for over 60 years and pcp's for about the last 5 years. My pcp's have been what I guess you would call low to mid level guns (Benjamin Cayden, Akela, Marauder, Disco, DAR). I recently decided to get a better quality gun and after some research decided on a RAW HMS1000 (actually got 2, 1 in 0.22 and 1 in 0.25). All I can say is WOW! The trigger and accuracy is amazing. I'm not a good shot and I can still get 1/4" 5 shot groups at 50 yards! Plus I like the fact that the guns are made here in the USA! The next question is do I dare go down the rabbit hole of expensive scopes? None of my scopes were over $150, most under $100.

Results after TJ barrel install on my Kral Bighorn.

I replaced the Oem barrel on my Kral Bighorn it was a 18 inch dechoked barrel. My TJ is 28 inches. The kral’s 18 inch barrel was shooting 44.5 grain bullets at a one shot high of 940 fps, but ranged down around 910-920 fps.

The Kral Bighorn has Troys tune .24 tp and the hammer altered to use Bulldog springs and the valve return spring removed. I am using a heavier Pitbull spring and the 3625 psi tank has been replaced with a 4500 psi .5L cf tank.

After the barrel change the first string was after turning the hammer spring out two turns, 1021,1049, 1030, 1035,1023,997,997,943,917. Starting pressure from a .5l 4500 psi tank was 4200 psi, ending pressure is 3300 psi. The first 7 shots are not too bad, but it drops off fast. 9 shots averaged 1001 fp/99 foe.

The second string was shot after two more turns out on the hammer spring.
929,997,989,981,987,987,980,1009,998,975. Starting pressure 4200 psi ending pressure 3500 psi. This string shows a bathtub string clearly. Average velocity 983//95.5 fpe.

I had planned on returning the VRs, but not so sure now. I might try turning the hammer spring back in for the next string.

Regards,

Roachcreek

New Wildcat MK3 Keeps Blowing Reg Seals

Last Friday my lady received a brand new Wildcat MK3 BT in .22 cal. We shot 3 mags through it on the fill that it arrived with, filled it up to 300bar and left it. The next morning the bottle was maybe half full and I could hear a slight hiss coming from the front/bottle reg. After removing the bottle and stock as well as mixing up some soapy solution, I screwed the bottle back on. What was a hiss became a pretty heavy whistle around the reg adjusting screw. The sales company was quick to send out a new reg o-ring kit and I carefully replaced all 6 o-rings last night, filled it up to 295bar and left it again. This morning it was down to 160bar with that same slight hiss coming from the front reg. Same steps as before, remove bottle and stock and prepare to spray soapy water on the area. When I screwed the bottle on, heavy whistle once again. I degassed the gun and removed the reg adjusting screw to find the top o-ring a little chewed up. I used a combo of plastic picks and tweezers to remove the o-rings, so I'm pretty positive that I didn't scratch anything on the reg. Have you guys ran into this before?
Note the hairy o-ring. I'm hoping that the sales company sends a reg this time.

Guy at work wants a "high" end air rifle he needing help. (Daystate) (Karlibrgun)

He has $2500 to spend tops. This will be his only rifle. He shoots 22lr also has a few nice rifles. He already got the compressor and scope. This will be for bench rest shooting 50-100 yards. Ok....so we were talking about the Daystate Red Wolf with the electronics and also the older models like the air wolf used. Are there any cons with the electronics?? This one area I wasn't familiar with because these guns are out of my price range. He also looking at the Cricket 2 tactical 60. He also like the fact the shot count on these rifles are high. He doesn't want anything that needs to be tinkered with just load and shoot. Are there anything else he should be looking at??? Thanks....

POP, SPEW, NEED...gauge for fill station! Recommendation

First try using my new "6000 PSI" rig to top off my air rifle with this conglomeration hooked up to my Scott 45 minute 4500psi tank. The thread title gives away the result. Gauge popped and spewed when it reached about 3400'ish psi. Glycerin everywhere!

I eased the tank valve open, in the tiniest increments, every few minutes. I also compared rifle and tank gauges every few minutes. Once the "fill station" gauge indicated 3000ish, it seemed to stall. My Air Venturi Avenger is rated for a 4500psi top off. I wanted to get at least 4000 on this first fill. I persisted with tiny twists of the tank valve, but I shortened the intervals. I constantly checked the Avengers reservoir reading against the fill stations while seeing no gain. A few minutes later?....POP/SPEW

Do I need a reliable gauge? Absolutely; and I would love recommendations.

Additionally Id like pneumatic experts opinion on the possibility that the device has restrictions to flow that could prevent gain past 3000? Ridiculous thought maybe, but questions unasked....

Armadillo .22 RedWolf or .25 Ghost

Since I've moved back to South Carolina (mid-state) I've seen a tremendous amount of wild animals. This of course is very different from living in Southern California for the last 40 years. Deer are across the street at night eating, Wild Turkey are in the field next to me, a brown fox (Not sure how fast he/she/they/them et al is jumping over the lazy dog), too many bird types to list, etc. etc.

Well now an Armadillo has decided to come rooting up the area next to my drive way. Appears to have come a few nights because the area is getting bigger.

Options?
1. Do nothing - which would make the wife happier as she says "It's just doing what it does."
2. Redwolf .22 HP with Heliboard and a JSB Redesigned as seen through a ATN 4k PRO
3. BRK Ghost .25 with a JSB 34.95 King Heavy as seen through an Athalon 5x25
4. Springfield Armory .45 ACP as seen through iron sites.

I can move the ATN 4k PRO to either one if need be, at 5:00ish AM it's still kind of dark. Laser range finder from my porch the area is 24 yards. The goal would be one shot, one kill (The Marine in me is a lifelong thing ;) ), shot placement? between the eyes, through the ears? body?

Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Thanks,

Smitty

FX  FX Crown GRS Continuum Standing Position

Hi All, I am eagerly waiting for the arrival of a FX Crown GRS Continuum, 380, 700 barrel. My goal is to use it Standing at 200 yards, with the 700 and slugs. Have a life time of experience in ISSF 10 meter Air rifle , and Smallbore 3 position. I may want to do a modification on fore end, for sling attachment point for prone , kneeling, all in good time. I am eager to learn about this long distance air rifle , and what it will take to make my goals happen. One question would be , Is there any other position shooter doing this with a gun of this type?
There are so many good benefits to using "Air" for this sport. Finding or starting a loosely organized Air group in this discipline would be great, in Central NH. Future 200 yd pic.20230514_134616 - Copy - Copy.jpg

Hades vs. Atomics, .22 cal

Been comparing these two pellets for a bit now. They seem to run neck-and-neck other than the noticeable price difference, but the Atomics have been grouping very slightly better throughout. But it's subtle.

Took advantage of a windy day today to see if one could buck the wind slightly better than the other. Obviously not expecting much difference since the shapes and weights are basically identical. But figured worth a shot.

Wind: R to L. Steady 5-7mph with frequent 10-15mph gusts. I did not wait for ideal conditions, I just shot away.

Pellet Launcher: FX Dreamlite Compact in .22. Stock config. 155bar on the reg. Typical groups with no wind is about 0.8 - 1.0 MOA out to 40 yds with this setup.

30yd shots. Five shots each group. Three groups each. Each string is 17 shots with the last two shots taken off target.

Submitted for your consideration. The analysis is up to you. But there's not a whole lot to analyze since they remain very similar.

Sight zero and holdover at range

The big question. At what range do most of you zero your higher end springers (mine is a Diana 48) and is there a written hold over chart for different distances out to say 50 or even 100 yards with a 7ish grain pellet?
I haven't tested it yet but I would guess it's in the 900 fps range from what I have read.
Advice and help with this subject will be appreciated. :giggle:

Stock Refinished Daystate Huntsman Revere Regulated .25

I bought a package rifle from Airguns of Arizona, I was kinda hoping that it would look like the model gun in the Daystate brochure….

IMG_3521.jpeg

No luck, but it had a little character, but the finish was quite rough and a little muddy looking. I taped the butt pad and reworked it using mineral spirits, LinSpeed oil, and a super fine white Scitchbrite pad, equivalent to 0000 steel wool. After finishing with three coats I used Williamsville Wax to seal the wood and give it a real shine. This is a show/ fun gun, I don't carry it and the slick finish is fine with me.
