N/A  The Springer Workbench.

A package delivered yesterday I opened this morning. Busy yesterday taking down Christmas decor. More tools, yay. Got punches for split pins and a set of Wera micro drivers.
IMG_7602.jpeg
I‘m getting ready to install some more spring sets I‘ve accumulated over the last year, 15 sets. I have three different manufacturers for comparison. Also have approx. 10 sets with identical cylinders and caliber for fair comparison.
IMG_7600.jpeg
I have 4 sets of Vortek en route as well, when they arrive, I will probably start shortly after. I have piston seals for all and will all be replaced. Have a few different lubes to try as well.
A few months ago I bought a screwdriver bit set by Chapman. Had the Wheeler set. The Chapman set easily wins, for quality, IMO.
IMG_7606.jpeg
I use the pine V-block to hold the cylinder when removing pins. I will make another, but shorter with same dimensions so I can straddle the cylinder. Works fantastic. The 2 maple pieces by v-block, I use instead of a wrench to open the cylinder on a few Weihrauch’s.
The Master Vice is exactly that, second to none, very versatile, rigid and safe. Looking forward to the fixes. Winter has its advantages. This is my favorite part of airguns.
Always open for suggestions. Crow … Happy New Year

Daystate  UPDATE 1-9-24 Looking to make the move to PCP world. Need guidance!

UPDATE:

I was able to find an amazing deal on an Daystate Air Ranger in .25 (mint condition, only shot about 150 pellets by owner)

I will post pictures once I have the AG in my possession.

Question: Can anyone help me pick the right accessories to fill the Air Ranger.

I am purchasing a GX PUMP CS3 compressor. Would a Air Venturi Male Quick-Disconnect, 1/8 BSPP Female Threads work to fill the Daystate?

Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I asked for input on this topic on another forum that has a lot less traffic. I got some good responses but I want to ask the folks on this forum the same question and get some input from a much larger crowd.

I have been a long time AG enthusiast and have always used a break barrel or underlever spring AG.

However, I am not as good of a shot I use to be once and shooting a spring piston AG adds to my difficulty of making consistently accurate shots.

Long story short, I am looking for a .25 cal PCP for my max available range of 50 yards. I do some paper punching but am looking for a solid performer to take down squirrels, mole, fox and racoons terrorizing my chickens.

I am not sure about how much I need to spend on the PCP rifle + a compressor. I certainly don't want to cheap out because I know from experience in AG world, you get what you pay for.

Things important to me:

1) Great trigger, as I know my current struggle to be accurate with my spring guns also comes from not having the best triggers and hold sensitivity.
2) It needs to have a magazine.
3) Good to great build quality
4) Adjustable power
5) Regulated
6) Needs to be quiet from factory or be able to add a suppressor/shroud to quiet it down. Do not want to alarm neighbors.

Anything else I am missing from the list of what's important ?

I have looked at a couple of websites and have seen .25 cal PCPs from the likes of Air Venturi Avenger-X (~$500 range), Benjamin Kratos (~$700), and on the more expense side Air Arms S510 Xtra FAC ($1,500).

I know I will get many different answers but given the limitation of my max range. I need something that can get 1 inch groups at 50yrds.

I really appreciate your input.

Air Venturi  Ordered an Avenge X

I've always thought the PCP guns were cool, but I never dove in because of the high initial cost. A compressor, air dryer, a chrono if you really want to tune them....
But today I finally but the bullet. I ordered an Avenge X in .22 cal. from Pyramid Air. The shipping options were kinda funny I could get it in 3 days, and had the choice of free shipping, or paying $17.00 or $30.00 to get it the same day. It was a tough choice, but I went with the free one. :) Hope I made the right decision.
This will be my first airgun in anything other than .177. I agonized over which caliber to get, way more than I should have, especially because it can be changed pretty economically. I'm looking forward to learning lots of new things. The Search function here has lead to a lot of reading. I'm sure I've got a bunch more to go.

FX  Finaly got an M3 impact

Got hold of a slightly used M3 for 1300usd with digital preassure gauge, saber tactical top and under rail in .177 today.
I want to buy a liner kit in .25 but dont know if I should go 600 or 700mm. IF I go 700 i have to take off my air stripper everytime i but it in case, and I like the look with 600mm better. And is slug probe a "must have" in theese when shooting slugs?
And how do I adjust preassures and stuff cuz the manual didnt Come with it and I cant find any obvious screws to adjust xD

How fast for 23 gr. 22 pellets

My Fx m3 compact 500 mm, is now shooting 23 gr. Pellets in 22 cal. At 900 fps. ( it was that way when I bought it).

They are somewhat consistent but get fliers in different places out of say one mag.

i know different barrels like didderent things. Just trying to get a range like 900-950?
or what others have found works best in theirs.

Wanting to go to 100 with accuracy. considering slugs as well.

Thanks in advance!

Other  alternative ways to achieve spin stabilization

Hi peeps,

A newbie here. Over the past few months I've been researching pcp air rifles with the goal to design and make 1 (for) myself. During this process, it got me thinking of alternative methods to achieve spin stabilization of the pellet/slug other then rifling the barrel or making a polygonal barrel with a twist.

I've been wondering, is it possible to spin the pellet through airflow alone? By "rifling" the airflow behind the pellet, which in turn would spin the pellet as it is propelled forward by the air. The reduce friction and increase the effect of the "rifled airflow", maybe a very small gap between the barrel and pellet is needed.

Any insight and/or related comments are greatly appreciated.
Also happy holidays everyone, hope you have a good one.

Accessories  SOLD FX Impact Shroud with 3D printed shroud end cap.

Hello,

This shroud works amazing if you have a barrel tensioner kit installed. Basically you will slide right over carbon barrel tensioner (see pic) and screw it on. It will put your impact in original form with the barrel tensioner kit hidden. The benefit is that it will dramatically reduce the muzzle report like in the original form before barrel tensioner kit. If you have a tensioner kit installed without a shroud it is super loud and this is because there is no way for air to escape other than the very front of the barrel, hence, the very loud noise.

This shroud will fit over .30 cal and below since it came out of a .30 cal impact. Will fit MK2 and M3 Impacts.

Asking $60 shipped to your door. PayPal preferred. CONUS only. Tracking will be provided ASAP.

Thanks for looking!

Rob

N/A  Switched flipped on a Jefferson State Raptor

Well after talking with Scott Schneider (Motörhead) and Matt from Jefferson State Air Rifles I've flipped the switch on a .25 Raptor long barrel ( 26"/ 660mm) and larger plentum). Not doing anything crazy. Rational is I WANT IT, which should be enough. Went with a .25 because of my permission for ground squirrels has WIND. As some know I've got a .22 Maverick Compact that splats the little rodents quite well at 125 yards, and my .25 VP 600mm barrel that is a friggin' tack driver so....I'm treating myself to something different. I'm fully expecting 1/2 minute of squirrel.

Now at some point in time, I'll get this thing and we'll see what it can do.

Resources  Tuning the Piatt/Thomas

Shifted to shooting indoors so time to tune the .177 Piatt/Thomas. I may be the 3rd or even 4th owner and the rifle may not have even been shot before l purchased it, as such, I had no idea what FPE it was jetted for.

Turns out it was jetted for 12 FPE. Adjusted the hammer spring CCW from 12 o'clock to 7 o'clock dropping the FPE from 13.9 to 11.6 using the Baracuda FT 9.57 gr 4.51 mm pellets.

If you give the regulator 10 seconds between shots the FPE stays between 11.4 and 11.6 (tested over 100 shots).

As for accuracy - it is a Thomas - cut the 9 ring every time on the USA/NRA 5O ft Target at 20 yards.

I want to thank Mike for an awesome design and beautiful machining and finish work, Will Piatt for assembling and smithing the rifle, and Rod for the final range set up. You three made it possible for me to own and shoot one kick ass rifle.

  • Question
FX  Fx impact M3 sounding louder?

Hi all.

I own a Fx impact M3 in .25cal, i have it tuned to shoot 39g slugs at 960fps, i have used the same tune since june 2021, everything internally is stock, Airmarksman backbone rail fitted, saber tactical front rail fitted etc. Recently i have noticed it sounds louder at the breech end, i changed the orings on the transfer port and the breech oring, but it still sounds a little louder than it used to, any ideas??.

Hatsan  Hatsan Jet, the air gun I will never own

I have spent many hours researching the Hatsan Jet on various air gun websites, independent posts and Youtube videos (most of these are positive since these guys are either clueless or have something to sell).

In the past week, Midway USA had the Hatsan Jets on clearance (Jet 1 177/25 for $136 and Jet 2 177/22 for $178).
Those lowered prices triggered even more research, and still the same crappy shot strings and acceptable short range (15-25 yards) accuracy.

Every time I have an itch for a Hatsan Jet I seem to buy a different air gun, like my second Umarex Notos or a Gamo Arrow.

This is my conclusion
The shot string is really bad (2 consistent magazines at most), and the accuracy seems pretty bad (especially in .177) or if you shoot past 20 yards.
Many people will cut and recrown their barrels to improve their poor accuracy, still the limit is about 20-25 yards.

Overall performance is much worse than the Umarex Notos or even the 13-14 year old Benjamin Marauder pistol (my PROD with a BStaley mod would be vastly better than the Jet).

After all my research, the main thing I like about the Jet are its cool looks,.
But I will not buy anything (or marry anyone) based on looks :)

Update
I caved and bought a Hatsan jet 2 in .177 from MidwayUSA (about $160 shipped).
To my surprise it is not bad.
The acceptable accuracy (3/4-1 inch at 18-20 yards) is the main weak point.
Ergonomics are really good.
Trigger is very good.

Even the shot string is good after doing some mods.

With my .177 Jet 2 I have managed to get 6 magazines (48 shots) with 7.5-8 grain pellets in the 740-780 FPS range from 250 bar to 130 bar.
These are the mods:
-removed the 2 hammer spring preload washers
-added 1 M3 nut as preload to the valve spring
-placed 1 washer on the valve stem where the valve spring sits
This washer will restrict the air flowing into the barrel, and also acts as valve spring preload.
Initially the washer was restricting most air and got velocities in the 400 FPS range.
I ground the washer outer diameter a little to allow more air to pass.

Well I went to the doc today

After two weeks in pain I decided to see the doc today, I was told I broke my ribs. I thought that I bruised them bad but the pain wouldn't subside so decided to go in. I for one like to do things myself and I paid for it. I was getting a air tank ready for hydro. I was leaning over the bottle with my hand and arm on it and my other hand trying to twist the valve off. The valve was tight so I put my body weight into it, it let go resulting me throwing my chest into the tank. I was in so much pain I almost passed out. Just thought I'd give a little warning two people are sometimes better than one. I wasn't going to mention this but it might help someone from doing the same thing. Yes sh** happens and I did it

Chronograph, what’s your opinion?

I’ve been tuning a few rifles and have approx. 15 spring sets to install now. I’m not satisfied with my crony. I’m using the Caldwell. The FX was not working for me. I would like to get a good quality chronograph. I heard mention of a Garmin Zero and I’ve seen an orange one that looked serious. I don’t want one that’s complicated but simple to use and accurate.
I would really appreciate some suggestions.
