Air Venturi  Air Venturi Avenger, Spiraling Pellets, Lil' Help Please

Hey peoples how's everyone doing. I just got into PCPs about 3 weeks ago. I picked up a Gamo Arrow and it shoots great using Crosman Premier 14.3g .22 hollow points. I decided to grab an Avenger, DonyFL 1/2 20 UNF adapter/barrel stabilizer, Tanto moderator, Saber Tactical upgraded pic rails and a descent compressor. I finished putting it all together, filled her to about 3500 PSI and took it out. I'm shooting the same 14.3g Crosman hollow points I shoot from my break barrels and from my Gamo Arrow, and I can see the pellet start to spiral at about 20 yards. I'm only shooting to 50 at the most, 9 times out of 10. At 50 I'm having to hold down 2 mil in my scope and left 1mil. The pellets land right on top of each other, nearly. I tried dropping the regulator down to 1300 PSI and no preload tension on the HS to 1 1/2 turn in on the HS. Also, many 1/4 turns between. I couldn't get the velocity below 880. Do I need to run a heavier pellet to get rid of the spiraling. None of my other guns spiral at all that I can see and hold excellent groups. Sub MOA at 50 yards so 1/2" groups. If a heavier pellet is the answer does anyone have any recommendations? There are so many choices. Oh, to add, I clean my pellets, dry them well and lube them with REM Oil. A very thin coat, they aren't dripping wet with lubrication. I don't know, I've found cleaning and lubing like this works very well for me. Thanks

Why is the .20 popular for those in the know?

Because it is accurate and for some reason air guns love it.
Some people will tell you the pellet selection is hard to come by.
From what I see the .20 is less pellet picky than the other calibers; thus you do not need a wide range of pellet choices.
Yep, that is the beauty of the .20, non-fussy.
OK, choices are a great thing, make mine a .20(y)

A Gun You (ALMOST) Can't Hear at 85 Yards

Just for giggles, today after I got back from a Squirrel hunt I decided to see what my Talon P sounded like at 100 yards. The gun is running a moderator design I call the "Krait". The moderator is 40mm x 127mm and is for all practical purposes an enlarged "Ember" which we have had so much success with.

I expected I'd be able to show that the gun was almost undetectable at 100 yards. I got out the LASER and went next door to shoot thinking the yard there was 100 yards long but it wasn't it was 85 yards so I ran with that. A little math and I'd be able to talk about the noise level of the gun at 100 yards, or so I thought.

The gun is shooting JSB 15.89s at 800 fps. I tweaked the tune a bit yesterday and reduced the muzzle energy from 26 fpe to about 22 fpe. I noticed it quieted the gun some. Today when I was hunting I took a couple of practice shots and thought to myself, "Man! That is quiet. I wonder if something is wrong."

In Chairgun the time of flight works out to 357 ms at 85 yards. The temperature today was around 50 degrees F and I am at sea level so the speed of sound was real close to 1100 fps. It takes 232 ms for sound to travel 85 yards under those conditions. We can use this information to calculate that the sound of the shot should arrive at the target about 125 ms before the pellet does. So if we look at the time line we can identify the actual sound of the shot and calculate the power of that impulse.

Here is a shot being fired so that the pellet passes over the microphone and strikes a bush about 20 feet behind it. Play it at half speed.

You will notice that you do not hear the sound of the shot, just the zip of the pellet passing over the microphone.
I have reduced the speed to 25% in this next cut of the sample. You can just hear the sound of the shot at the beginning of the "zzziiiiippppp" sound. If you slow this cut to half speed you will be listening to the actual sound at 1/8th speed. You can clearly hear the shot but hey... ain't nobody gonna hear that unless they are listening for it with a "Big Ear".

Here is the graph of that sound from Audacity.

A pellet I would love to see produced

I would love to see a company ( preferably JSB ) come out with a heavy .25 pellet in the 38-40gr range and as a Wadcutter.

I know that Hollopoints are sexy, I know that slugs are sexy but unfortunately in the airgunning world the Meplat is completely overlooked
As a hunter I rather have a big Meplat then a Hollowpoint.

A nice heavy Wadcutter with a lot of the weight in the front ( maybe make it with narrow riding bands like the EunJin ) would really fill an empty spot in today's airgun world.

Some pics of the Giveaway items.

Attached are a few pics of some of the items that i got from the Air Venturi Giveaway. I just got the last of the things in and will post more pics and videos soon. Thanks again to all sponsor's that donated the great stuff, as well as Michael for putting the whole Giveaway together. We all look forward to future Giveaways. I feel that "this" is also a great reason that AirGun Nation requires "new" members to have so many posts in a given time period. Imagine how we would have ALL felt if someone just got on the forum to enter the Giveaways, and WON!!!! That wouldn't be fair to those of us that get on here dailey and contribute to the Sponsors and other people of "this" community.

Brocock/BRK  The British Shooting Show... I heard a rumor that..

The British Shooting Show,

It is a rumor and I am not giving away my source,

" BRK will present a revolutionary new airgun concept AND they will be releasing a Ghost 2.0. Do not know the specs at his moment.
Tony Belas did not yet respond to any questions. "

Sounds promising I think, unless it is a hoax. We will see. Wonder what news Daystate have?

Brocock/BRK  BRK Ghost Sound Mod

Hello Airgunners,

I have the honer to shoot a BRK Ghost 30. I use a 0DB silencer which makes this little monster good for my backyard. The impact sound is much louder then the sound from the silencer.

The shroud on my Ghost is longer then the barrel. I am sure that this space is used for a chrono in the Alpha en Delta Wolf.

Well space is space so lets do something with this space.

One of the best silencers ever made, imo, was the Weihrauch HW100 silencer. The construction is very simple and in a time where the industry was working on a way to moderate the sound, Weihrauch came with the simple concept of a tube with haircurlers and some cloth and a few spacers.

Well this inspired me to make a sound mod for my BRK Ghost.

I completely forgot to do a db check before so have no data if the sound became less.

The poof sounds a little lower after me modding.

Maybe a cnc cut system or 3d printed baffle complex does the job better. And I hope to inspire more people to find a way to mod the sound of the BRK Ghost.

Stay safe & shoot straight!
Eric

Air Tanks  SOLD [SOLD] Scott Air-Pak (Luxfer) 45 Minute 4500psi SCBA Air Tank w/ OEM Scott Valve

Hello AGN:

Since getting a compressor, I realize that I no longer need to be hoarding 5 different SCBA air tanks so I'm looking to move a couple of the extras. Both of these tanks are outside of their initial 15yr service life so you need to have your own fill source to use them. However, rest assured that these are structurally sound and fully functional as they are the two that I have been using to fill my rifles - you can see from the last photo below that the 30min tank currently has a full 4500psi charge and the 45min tank is at 3000psi after just topping off a couple of my rifles. Also please note that the OEM Scott valve itself will cost you $40-$45 so you're basically getting the tank itself for just a few dollars...

Up for sale here is:
  • Scott Air-Pak (Luxfer) 30 minute 4,500psi SCBA tank w/ genuine Scott valve. Price is $50 w/ local pickup in the SF Bay Area. [SOLD]
  • Scott Air-Pak (Luxfer) 45 minute 4,500psi SCBA tank w/ genuine Scott valve. Price is $65 w/ local pickup in the SF Bay Area. [SOLD]
If picked up locally, I will deliver them to you with a full 4500psi fill. If you would me to ship them to you, shipping will be at an extra cost and I will drain the tanks down to 1000-1500'ish psi for shipping. Shipping cost for one of these tanks will likely be around $35 depending on your location - contact me for a shipping quote if interested.

I've got plenty of positive feedback here so please feel free to check them on the Member Feedback forum prior to purchasing. Paypal Friends & Family payment is prefered (otherwise, please add 3.5% to cover the fees). Local pickup in the SF Bay Area is available as well.

Thanks!

EDgun  Project Leshiy 2 “RatFLEX”

My last winter (re)build/project involves my L2, which was a simple 177/250mm REPR that was used for pesting/plinking in the yard and backpacked for hiking and skiing. It was made redundant by my Huben GK1 and I wanted to repurpose it as a dedicated ratter. The goal is to shoot small Zan 177 slugs out to 100y accurately and quietly - two things that the L2 isn’t particularly good at, at least relative to other, bolt-action 177 slug guns.

I first tried upgrading to an Alfa 450mm barrel to juice up the shooting to 20-25fpe. Accuracy was pretty good with Zan 10 and 13 grain slugs, aside from the odd flyer. In terms of sound, it was a bit louder than I’d favor, using a variety of mods. Overall, it didn’t meet my goals but I did learn that a favorable combination of traits was to (1) retain the dog bone and collar for a very tight ES, and (2) running a high reg pressure with large jets produces a quiet, efficient and snappy shot cycle (producing good slug accuracy).

I then decided to try the Flex approach using a Huma adapter and FX liner/barrel sleeve and shroud. I used a 177 500mm heavy liner that came from Europe that I already knew to have stellar performance with the little Zan pills in my M3.

IMG_0729.jpeg

Initial testing was made with 150bar reg and 2.2mm total jetting shooting the 10g slugs at 970fps. No doubt, the platform is capable of much more but that’s not my goal here. If I can shoot beyond 80y accurately then I’ll take the quieter, more efficient 10g slugs over their larger siblings.

The first evaluation of this approach , using a standard barrel setup with the liner secured with 2 orings and the FX shroud in place was pretty good. Accuracy was on a par with the Alfa barrel but the fliers were gone. I’d say 1.5-2moa at 80y. However, a big improvement was observed in terms of sound. The FX shroud and an IA1200 mod completely silenced the front end, leaving only the action noise which is pretty mute with the high reg pressure/large jets producing a very snappy cycle. Unquestionably backyard friendly and no louder than popping open a can of soda.

Still, I felt that the accuracy could improve so I set about making the liner and barrel more rigid. First, installed a carbon liner sleeve bonded with silicone and wrapped the ends of the liner with Teflon tape to ensure a snug fit into the FX jam nut and TP adapter:

IMG_0734.png

Then, over a few weeks I tried various methods of making the barrel more rigid. Sparing the details, I ended up using a printed piece to fill the gap between action and shroud. Because the shroud and printed “buffer” might not have perpendicular ends, they were put together using epoxy washers, with the shroud getting tightened down while the epoxy was soft, to create a natural fit. The shroud and action surface were first coated with silicone to prevent the epoxy from sticking, allowing the shroud and buffer tube to be removable. Shot with just the buffer tube on: (ignore orings - they were superseded by the epoxy attachment method)

IMG_0724.jpeg

Following mounting of the shroud, a CF tube with an ID matching the OD of the shroud was slipped over and glued in situ to the printed buffer. Note that this is not working as a tensioner, just a stiffener.

IMG_0727.jpeg

IMG_0728.jpeg

IMG_0726.jpeg

The whole arrangement is very rigid, consistent in POI and increased in accuracy.

8 shots at 80y:

The slugs extracted from the duct seal:

And 8 at 100y:

IMG_0732.jpeg

Pretty happy with this 21fpe performance and I don’t think I could do better with this trigger. Certainly minute of rat out to 100. Will be playing around with jets, speeds and trying out the 13g in the next week.

Resources  The Chair - the most overlooked part of BR ?

Well, can't say that i shoot BR except to sort out my FT guns dope
But
As i experience this in my own world, an as i have experienced this at several different ranges, i find a common issue or problem.
Specifically:
The seat we place our Arses on is like the "weakest link" in the equation.
Thousands of dollars in Guns, Scopes, and BR equipment and then we contort our bodies on wobbly stools or old office chairs to find a reasonable eyebox to do our best shooting. What's up with that?

I've seen all kinds of seats.... including the fixed "made to be part of the BR" seats and quite frankly they mostly all suck.

Anybody found the perfect seat or way to park your Arse on whilst behind your scope?

Brocock/BRK  New Ghost leaking, question

Posted this in the "how to fix ghost regulator" thread, but not getting any feedback, so thought I would try a new thread.
I am having an air leak issue, and can't seem to locate where it is, and suspect it may be from the regulator. A couple of questions. When I unscrew the bottle from the gun, all of the air leaks out of the gun itself. It doesn't hold the pressure as the video shows. I also notice what "looks" like rusty gunk on the bottle valve and on the port on the gun that screws into the bottle. Is this from rust, or is it just brown grease from the factory? And what would cause all of the air to evacuate from the gun when the bottle is unscrewed (the bottle itself doesn't appear to leak)?
Brand new Ghost by the way. For the price paid, I don't feel like a should have to disassemble and replace seals on a brand new gun. However, if it is a very simple fix, and the brown gunk is just grease, I could live with that. If it is rust, I worry what the other internals look like.
Thanks
Here's some pics of the gunk.

What causes those markings on the bottom of some FX guns?

I've noticed that the blocks of many FX guns often have blemishes on the underside, usually near threaded holes. Mine certainly has them. Any idea what causes this? I was thinking that whatever they use to hang the blocks during anodizing is the culprit. Just curious.

A picture for those wondering.

Huben  GK1 PERFECTED mod finally out!!

You can download my fantabulastic mod for the gun, (only V1 for the moment).

Well.. I just find out that my mod also corrects the flaw design of the charging rod getting on the way for left-handed shooters. In my grip design, the hand is a bit more lowered, so no more problems with the charging rod if you hold it with left hand, that's a plus.

Instructional video:

It shortens the overall lenght, centers the point of balance making the gun less heavy on the hand and easier to aim quickly, changes the trigger system to a press on, various trigger length choices, yeah you can feel the 2 stage and its smooth like the original, only in crappy plastic. A power tuning wheel on the go, with indicator!! just like the K1 rifle, a quick rear stock assembly mechanism, rear stock still in the make... it will be lenght adjustable on the go as well.
