Tuning  General Operational and Math Question

I was just looking at different gun specs and came across a gun that has an 18" barrel, fill pressure of 3625 psi (regulator pressure not specified), and claims 985 fps and 35 fpe at the muzzle. I calculated that the pellet has to be 16 grains for this to happen.
Now, my gun has a 23.6" barrel, fill pressure of 3600 psi (regulated to 1800psi) and can get 900 fps with a 14.5 grain pellet, giving 26 fpe. The velocity would have to be increased to 1039 fps to get to 35 fpe. How would you go about tuning to get 35 fpe? I would think that with the longer barrel a larger blast of air would do it, so increase the hammer spring pressure or ??

HW/Weihrauch  Ok Weihrauch Airgunsmiths, I need some advice... HW35 Barrel Latch Worn

I picked up this beautiful, vintage HW35E (with the original sights!) and while dialing it in the other day, I ran across something that I haven't seen yet in over 40 years of working on airguns. The famous HW35 barrel latch is worn to the point that it will open if tapped as one would in order to break open a standard detent / chisel latch. I've got a few ideas on a fix, but I'll bet that folks have run into this before, so I'm looking for any known fixes before I go off in my own direction.

Other  thoughts on "tactical" vs traditional rifle

I have an AEA Zeus .58 tactical and Dragon Claw 2 traditional .50 I thought I would use the Zeus much more than I have but I am so used to the look and feel of a traditional rifle that I find my self picking up the Dragon Claw almost every time I go shooting or hunting. Just wondering about others experiences with this. Not sure if this is just an "age thing" I am 60 and only in the last couple years started bigger game hunting with an airgun as something different than my ballistic rifle.

Other  Why so many .25 cal. for sale?

Just curious. I watch the classified section and other airgun for sale sites. It seems to me that there are more .25 cal. for sale than say .22. Not having owned a .25 cal. air rifle I am wondering why? Is it less shots per fill, ammo cost, accuracy or ??????? Makes me think twice about buying one. Your thoughts? Thanks.

Diana  240 Best Pellets for Accuracy ?.

I want to get a Diana 240 for just plinking fun. Did my homework , and found the 240 would be great with a light cocking effort. I found one at Midway USA for $99 on backorder.
All I want is something in a springer that I can fun with in my 15 yard backyard. I would like to get some great accuracy from it tho , and that is why I'm asking here for help.
Anyone that has had luck with a certain pellet I would like to hear about it. Post target pics if I got um thanks.

Results  DeSoto Airgunners (FL) BR Match Report for July 13, 2025 (Spoiler Alert 750/41x)

Posted by Gary P. for our Benchrest match director, Ron Z.

July 13 2025 Benchrest - a.k.a. Three - The Hard Way

If you have been following DeSoto Airgunners Summer Swelter Benchrest Series you'll note dramatic improvements and higher scores this season. Shooting a single perfect card (250 points) in a 3-card relay is always noteworthy. Last month Scott shot back to back perfect cards while Bob C. shot one. With three perfect cards in last month's event, the 2025 Summer Swelter Benchrest Series was off to a high scoring and competitive season.

Another three - The Hard Way.

Today's match saw another 3 perfect cards. Astoundingly, all three cards were shot by Chip W. 750 points and 41 X's ! Awesome. A phenomenal accomplishment. Chip was (obviously) our TOP GUN and X Prize celeb. He was on fire today. [Match Director will be submitting Chip's perfect card scores to USARB for posting on ScoreLine.]

Conditions

We were setup and on the benches very early. The cool(er) Summer morning was literally windless. Zero miles per hour officially recorded between 5:30 AM and 9:30 AM. More than a dozen idle windicators and flags spread across the range confirmed very still conditions. We had a couple 4 MPH puffs arrive near the conclusion of the third Target Card session in today's single relay. High clouds also kept temperatures tolerable during the event. All shooters were accommodated in a single relay.

It's always a thrill when we can host a new air rifle shooter. Lynn M., an accomplished firearm benchrest enthusiast drove some 4 hours from northern Florida to participate in today's air rifle match. He promised to return.

Our next match in the Summer Swelter Series will be a 25 Metre Benchrest event on Sunday August 10th.

N/A  New to PCPs

Hi everyone. Cottontail season is here and since I cant find lead free 22lr ammo on any shelves anywhere in my area, but we can still use lead in airguns to hunt with (go figure) I decided that it was time that I got my first PCP rifle. I went with the Barra 250z in .22 caliber. I just took it out in the garage and did some chronograph testing with it the way it came from the factory, with the regulator at 2000 psi.

Crosman Premier hollowpoint 14.3gr 1040fps

H&N Field Target Trophy 14.66gr
1035fps

Predator Polymag 16gr
1000fps

JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy 18.13gr
970fps

H&N Crow Magnum 18.21gr
965fps

JTS Dead Center 21.53gr
925fps

JTS Dead Center 25.39gr
875fps

I haven't been able to sight it in or shoot any groups with it yet, but I was curious. Of the pellets listed what seems to work best on cottontails and ground squirrels? Light and fast or the slower and heavier ones?

Oldies at 100...

I got in some 100 yard practice today using my two "100 yard" rifles - both would be considered "oldies":
RTI Prophet Performance V1 - .25 LR barrel
FX Wildcat MK2 - .30 700mm barrel

I've been amazed at the results with the .25 Prophet and the AEA 29.5g.

I chronoed 50+ shots with the Prophet - the string was 902-912fps - pellets shot straight from the tin.

The wind was 8 mph with gusts to 16. I tried to be really patient and waited until my flags indicated "time to shot" on each shot. (wind speed low)
My range is at my brothers house - I shoot from an open area into the woods - so I use a flashlight to illuminate my targets.

Thoughts:
I'm just an enthusiast - not a competition shooter - so I'm happy with my results today.
It took about 3 hours to shoot 70 shots - lots of patience with the wind.
Shooting 100 yards is boring - constantly waiting and observing the wind - not enough shooting.
The velocity spreads on both rifles seems great - very tight by my standards.
The .30 caliber requires less hold off in the wind - but it recoils much more than the .25 caliber.

I validated a statement I made on another thread - that you are doing well at 100 yards if you can put 5 straight shots on a 2" splatter. I was able to do it, but its not that easy - at least not on my "range" and at my level of shooting. Try it - put up a 2" splatter at 100, take your sighters off target - then 5 straight at the 2" splatter - with no more sighters once you start - gotta read the wind after each shot and adjust. All the guys saying they shoot 1 MOA at 100... well, you are better than me.

I think I'd enjoy shooting at 100 yards a lot more if I could shoot indoors at that distance. I like being outdoors, but it requires so much patience and time to deal with the wind.

Diana  Diana 54 air king pro 7.5J

I have a 7.5 J coming and I’d like to see if anyone has ever converted one to full power. From the very little information out there about the low power versions it looks like there’s more than likely a transfer port restriction in the form of a washer with a tiny hole ( 2mm or less) as an air passage and more than likely a weak spring in there. I’d like to hear first hand from someone that has gone down this road before.
I did send Hector an email asking about a short stroke piston but he didn’t seem certain as Diana uses all kinds of different methods to detune their rifles.
I have a Maccari spring , piston and breech seal coming from ARH and hoping I’m not missing anything.
I’d really like to get this rifle shooting close to 20 FPE as long as it likes the 10.3 JSB pellets.
This one came up on sale , brand new for 550$ snow pesos ( canadian dollar ) which I thought was a very good deal, considering there are some vendors still asking 1100$ for exact same rifle. So even after the extra parts and a bit of time I think I’m still way ahead ( if that even makes sense)

I was supposed to be downsizing my collection. Throw that plan right out the window. 😂

FX  FX M4 owners, are they worth the cost?

I'm thinking about buying a FX M4 in .30 or .35 caliber for small game hunting and would love to get the thoughts of actual owners. Do you shoot slugs or pellets? How accurate is the rifle out to 150 yards? I've watched a few videos from Utah Air guns on prairie dogs hunts and they seem pretty awesome. Thanks for the input.

RTI  .25 Mora and it’s first range trip

Today was my Mora .25 Sniper’s first range trip. It came set up with 140 bar on the 2nd reg and it shot pretty decent with AEA 29.5 pellets with one ragged hole at 50Y so then I stretched it out to 100Y.

Calm conditions with wind at 2-5.

Does anyone know if the shroud end cap is LocTited? Mine won’t budge. I bent several punches, trying to unscrew it. Might have to try some heat tomorrow.

About 200 shots in the rear hammer got really loud and the speed dropped from 975ish to 950ish. This was before I made any tuning adjustments. I know it’s going to take several tins to allow the reg and hammer break in so I am not too concerned yet. I have put about 500 pellets through it today.

It shot pretty good but pretty wide spreads 30+. Dropped reg to 110 and had to open dwell about 1.5 turns past where it previously was to get speed back up to 975ish but still wide and similar spreads???

Chronograph News

I was telling a friend about getting my airgun steroided and said I was going to get a chronograph. Low and behold, he has one he hasn't used in year and said I could pick it up and use it as long as I wanted! He lives about 45 minutes away, so guess what I'm doing tomorrow? 😁

Benjamin  My Airgun Revisions Tuned Akela is a slugger.

Today I grabbed my Airgun Revisions tuned Akela .177 and headed for the bench (picnic table) with a tin of JSB Knock Out Mk3. Being tuned for HFT and AA 10.3 gr pellets I was curious if it would shoot slugs accurately. The transfer port was about 3/4 open for the pellets. I opened it all the way for the added drag of the slugs. With the improved air flow thanks to the installed SSG hammer from AR and tuned by Rich I didn’t mess with anything internal. Just the TP. Well, I got my answer pretty quickly.

She’s a straight shooter!!! With a 30 yard zero (it’s a .177 after all) it still maintains enough energy and nearly identical hold out to 50 yards. I’ve never had a slug shooting small caliber, but now I can’t say that, and I’m very happy about it. Oh yah, that’s 30 shots through the target. Also, only used the Caldwell bag with no rear support. I imagine it would do even better with a rear support, but that’s now how this will be employed out pesting.
