I own two HW 30s and a ProSport. None required any tuning or break in. All had smooth shot cycles and superb accuracy out of the box.

Always wanted an HW 50 and picked one up about 8 months ago. Was disappointed in how rough the shot cycle was. Buzzy with some spring twang. Had to routinely tighten screws and and mounts. Accuracy was good, but the gun was more than a bit hold sensitive.

Tried a lube tune with mixed results. Didn’t want to tinker with it anymore than that and just decided to break it in by shooting it. I was hoping for a gradual improvement and was not sure if I would even notice any improvement from week to week.

It had become my least favorite gun, but I continued to shoot it a couple times a week just to see if there would be an improvement.

I’ve probably put a thousand pellets through it. Hadn’t shot it in about a month, though.

Pulled it out of the safe yesterday and viola, I did notice a perceptible LACK of vibration/buzz. Figuring I was probably imagining things, I had lunch and tried it again. To my pleasant surprise, the vibration and spring buzz actually has become almost non existent! Not bank vault closing like my reduced power prosport, but more like my HW 30s.

It took a while, but shooting it did smooth the gun out a lot. Very pleased with the gun now. I guess patience can be a virtue.

Well after almost 2 years of abuse my cheapo vevor compressor has given up. Plugged it in and a POP and flash came from the power supply, took it apart to find this:

I haven’t done a whole lot of searching online yet for a pcb diagram of the power supply yet(s-600-12) but I can’t even tell what those busted parts were! If anyone could point me in the right direction I’d really appreciate it.

I am the team "armorer" for a US college pistol team, and I'm learning how to repair competition 10 meter air pistols. An important part of the process is measuring & adjusting velocities. In the past, I have used Combros, which are spec'd to be 1% accuracy. I have two at home, and we have one at the college. I haven't managed to shoot one yet, but it would certainly be easy to do. I recently picked up one of the Chinese HT-X3006 units, which claims 0.5% accuracy. I've 3D printed a bunch of adapters so I can easily pop it onto a variety of pistols.

It's easier to use than the Combros, and the mounts I designed make it pretty idiot proof in terms of not shooting the sensors.

I tested the HT-X3006 on a Benelli Kite I had just rebuilt. If they are up to factory spec, the velocity shouldn't vary by more than +/- 1 meter/sec. I was seeing variations of up to twice that. I didn't know if it was the pistol, or the Chinese chrono. I tested the pistol with all three Combros, firing 25 shot strings with each. Nothing matched up very well:


The Combros are roughly within 1% of each other, but the "more accurate" HT-X3006 is a couple percent above ALL of the Combros. The standard deviation numbers are all big enough that I think the pistol has a problem. The catch is that I have no idea which chronograph to use to test it when I try to fix it.

I also own a LabRadar V1 Doppler radar chronograph, which is supposed to be good to 0.1%. The little chronos are WAY easier to use, so I figured I could set up the LabRadar and use it to come up with calibration/correction formulas for the others. I could shot through the small chronos, and use the radar to measure each shot at the same time, which should give me really good data. Or so I thought...

I set up the LabRadar in my basement shop, and spent several hours trying to get ONE valid reading. In order to get 10 meters, I have to shoot though a doorway, and the place is very cluttered. After playing with all sorts of settings, I concluded that I was getting too many reflections off of various surfaces, and/or the distance was too short.

Today, I dragged the LabRadar and the HT-X3006 into the school 50 foot range, which is relatively open. I could immediately get velocity readings, and I tried to get some comparison data between the two. I need to plot all the data, but here are a few samples (all in fps):


The LabRadar varied all the way from 389 to 477 fps (an 88 fps spread). The HT-X3006 was considerably more consistent, going from 441 to 480.8 fps (39.8 fps spread). The "match" between velocities on the SAME shot was universally horrible.

I understand the "physics" of the HT-X3006, and it's pretty basic. There's only so much that can go wrong. I also used to work as a microwave engineer, and Doppler radar is pretty well established technology, but picking up a tiny pellet seems to be a problem. I now have FIVE chronographs, and I can't trust ANY of them. At this point, the $25 Chinese box is giving me much more believable data than the filthy expensive 0.1% accuracy radar.

Given that they are cheap, I may just get several of the HT-X3006's and see how they compare. I can get four for what I paid for one Combro. I don't actually need to know the absolute velocity super accurately, but I need to be able to measure the consistency to at least 1 fps or better.

I took a look at the Garmin Xero C1, and it claims slightly better than 1% accuracy, but there's no info on how repeatable they are. I also have no idea it it would work in my shop at home. The convenience of the Combros and the HT-X3006 is hard to beat. I've measured a number of air pistols that fire consistently around +/- 1 fps with Combros in the past, so they appear to be pretty repeatable, even if the absolute velocity is slightly suspect.

I could get a larger conventional chronograph, but I really don't have a good place to set one up at home. I even have an old Oehler 35P with three sensors, but that's WAY to big to set up in my shop.

So, now that you've suffered through my tales of woe, does anyone have suggestions for a chrono I can actually trust? I'd blow the big bucks on a Garmin if I KNEW it would work well with pellets, especially if I could use it at home. Based on my experience with the LabRadar, I don't trust a Doppler system in that environment, which leaves me with optical time & distance gadgets.

First post on these forums. Don't know how I missed the existence of Airgunnation after all these years.

I've searched these forums and online for my query but did not find the info I'm looking for.

Anyways, looking for a smaller replacement for my more traditional two post chronograph and looking at the FX Chronograph V1 vs V2.

I don't mind the larger size of the V1 versus V2 or changing batteries and my pellets are never going to exceed 1000fps, I don't think.

Q: Is there a reason to get the V2 anyways or just save the $ and get a used V1? I've read numerous posts about the V1 not picking up .177 pellets. I do shoot .22 most of the time. The V1 will already be a whole lot smaller than my current unit and it seems that both will give me the same data. Am I missing something?

Today was another red letter day for me and the RTI Mora. Riding on the high from my last trip to the range and my results at 50 yards, I decided to stretch it out to 100 yards today, and since my friend Keith wasn't there to bear witness, I filmed one of the three targets I shot. All three were exemplary for me, but it was target # 1 that set the tone for the day. There are scans of all three targets below, plus the single take video of target #2. (sorry about my head getting in the way of the camera between shots. I didn't realize...LoL)

Just three short years ago these kinds of scores were the things of fantasy for air gunners. Today, here's the proof that it can be done by virtually anyone given the right tool.

I'm always doing some reading online and found several "experts" crowing about how airgunners are too focused on extreme spread in pcp airguns. One advocated a 25fps es, as excellent, another 40fps es as being the holy grail. The gist was that it makes absolutely no difference.

Got me to thinking and I did some quick math and ballistic calcs and came up with some numbers that I'm wondering about. Let's take a common round and velocity, a 25 cal 25gr pellet at 850fps. Doesn't really matter as you can check 22 cal and get similar numbers. at a 25fps spread, you're looking at an almost exactly 1moa drop from high to low. So you've used your 1moa of accuracy right there. If we consider 40fps, then we move to a ~1.8" drop from high to low, so you're using up roughly 1.8moa spread in group size. Am I missing something here? Those numbers represent a 2.9% and 4.7% es, which to me is too high. I have no trouble getting a good shooting (accuracy wise) tune that produces less than 1.5% es, and a lot of times, less than 1%. That to me is where you should be for long range pellet accuracy. I had a Katran 177, that almost NEVER had a %es of over .8% and most tunes were .6%, yes, zero point 6. Those numbers, of course, don't take into effect wind, shooter, angle, so add some of that in and you have NO chance of shooting 1 moa at 100 yards.

I know this is getting in the weeds with stats and tunes, but if you want to shoot moa groups at 100 yards with pellets, then this is exactly the field you need to be in.

I normally shoot boat tail slugs out of my .25 Altaros M24, Texan .257 LSS and .30 Karma Red Panda.

I recently learned about rebated boat tail slugs and wondered if any AGN members shoot them?
When compared to boat tail, is there any advantages?

Does anyone know the difference? I've searched quite a bit with no luck of getting an actual comparison, I've even seen where guys asked the same question but no real answer. Hoping someone familiar with both rifles can chime in. I assume the magnum comes with larger porting, higher reg pressure and a heavier hammer spring to deal with the higher reg pressure. But those differences don't justify the price increase in my eyes. Any info is much appreciated!

This coyote was digging around where the coons dropped food. I opened a door 24 yards away on the 2nd floor very quietly and slowly, but it still spooked the coyote that promptly left the scene. A least this coyote will be much tougher to remove than coons.
