Bear vs Texan

So I set out a bait this spring for a bear. This was my first time baiting and I really enjoyed watching the game camera videos. I had about 15 different bears visit the bait. I finally picked out the one that I wanted to take but he was not very cooperative when it came to giving me a good broadside shot. Took about 20 minutes of him coming in and leaving before he finally made a mistake. I had plenty of time to get a video with my cell phone. Here it is.
Spoiler alert, there is more to the story.

Daystate Regal XL .22

Took my Huntsman .22 out today and was smacking spinners and cans with sniper-like accuracy at 50 yards. Then I see my enemy, the Evil Chipmunk, at only 10 feet away and under my very feet under the deck! I quickly take aim at my enemy aaaaand I miss. My enemy runs away and I am sure I hear laughter. The moral of the story, practice at ALL ranges if you want to hit anything. Dammit.

Impact M3 Accuracy Question

I’m having accuracy issues with my M3. It’s a .22 with a 700 mm superior heavy barrel shooting NSA 27.5 grain slugs in .218 diameter at about 970 fps with an ES of 15fps. I’ve tried a number of different slugs and it seems to like these best.

My question is that I can get it tuned in so that at 40 yards I can shoot 5 shots that I can cover with my thumb nail. I then go to 65 yards and can get it to do about the same for a group or two. After that the groups open up at random and it tends to spray them around. Often times if I keep shooting it will get better for awhile and then worse again. I’ve shot some pellets with the regular liner with a little of the same problem only usually not as extreme. I’ve tried shooting at 100 yards with slugs and pellets and sometimes I can get three shots touching but the next two or three will be an 1” or 2” off any given direction at random.

My question is does the gun have an issue or is something else going on? I’ve tried cleaning the barrel and it’s the same thing. What I consider great accuracy for a few groups and then it falls apart again. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

White squirrels

Not exactly a squirrel hunting post, but I have mentioned these things to a couple of guys that have never heard of them. So, here are photos taken of one that lives in my backyard. We have a large population of these critters. Exactly how and when they first showed up here is a matter of debate. One story has them imported here around 135 years ago and another story has them brought in over 150 years ago. The ones here are actually albinos, but many of them have dark eyes. That causes a huge debate as to whether they are albinos or just white colored squirrels. As you can see in the last image, running over one ACCIDENTALLY will net you a $750 fine. If you are found guilty of intentionally shooting and/or possessing a stuffed white squirrel, you are at the mercy of the court with fines ranging from $2500 and WAY up. We have a "squirrel count" every year to keep tabs on the population. In the 1940s, there were between 800 and 1000 here. The last few counts have the population estimated at just over 100.

One of my real sore spots with this town is that you get fined $750 for accidentally running over one, but there is no penalty to residents who allow their cats to roam freely and kill squirrels. Yes, we have an ordinance that specifically prohibits cats and dogs from roaming at large. Even though there have been a few photos taken that clearly show cats eating white squirrels or dragging one down the street, the town just will not do anything about the free roaming, feral cats in town. That population has been estimated at somewhere between 3000 and 5000 free ranging cats. I'm thinking I might help reduce that population in the very near future.

Anyway, here are a couple of photos of a squirrel that lives in my backyard. I keep a couple of ears of corn out for it., but some folks in town have HUGE backyard feed stations with everything imaginable for them to eat.

EBR setup

Been 3 months in the making fitting in a few minutes here and there. Removed the shim in the reg and dropped the pressure to about 2400psi. Added a sidelever. Made a new hammer with a longer stroke so the bolt locks back and I can mag swap without holding the lever. 28" TJ hammerforged barrel 1-26 twist (Same as Factory) but only 6 grooves. Polished the bore and shortened the hammerspring 5 coils. Now getting over 50 shots at 850fps with JSB 44.75 pellets. Polished and adjusted the trigger and set the overtravel for a very light single stage. Just in time for EBR! What are you bringing?

Results  Xtreme Field Target at Phoenix Rod and Gun, report from Sept 2022 night match

Here are the top 3 pellet scores!!!
L to R: Wes C, Van T. Mike S.

Screenshot_20220925-124631.png

I believe Mike's 45/48 is a new Phoenix Rod and Gun Club XFT record @ 93.75%. CONGRATS!!! I skimmed through some past match reports and the next highest I came across was Ben's June 2022 night match score of 29/32 (90.6%) and Steve M shot a 37/40 (92.5%) with a rimfire in January 2022. If somebody has a higher knockdown % please let us know as it's kinda cool to keep track of that.

And the scores and equipment.....
(I always say it, and it's always true: live and die by the forced position shots).

scorecard.jpg

48 shot match so Ben used all the lanes he carved out of the desert for this match. He told me the summer rains had washed out the main road/path connecting all the shooting pads (in multiple places) and he had to spend some time shoveling dirt and raking gravel to make it a nice (relatively) smooth path again. Sent me photos of blisters on his hands from the rake and shovel, dang guy puts a ton of work into seeing that this is enjoyable for all.

Sounds like it was a bit humid for us Arizonons, lol 30% isn't much, but we prefer single digits. They're telling me there were times they wanted a breeze to help with the humidity but I also got a report of needing hold an entire mil off while one shooter was on Lane 3 (75 and 100 yard targets there). On that note, here are the distances, and they're quite literally set in stone because the mounting points for the targets are mostly drilled into bedrock! Shooting mats could be slightly moved for slight changes in distance, but lights and shooting pads complicates all of that.

Yellow highlighted are the targets past 70 yards, which is one of the columns in the data above.
Pink highlighted is offhand lane.

TROYER
There's been some discussion about how to better account for the wind in the Troyer (difficulty) calculations.
Original Xtreme Troyer table here: https://www.airgunnation.com/threads/extreme-troyer-factor.868700/
Some more recent conversations here: https://www.airgunnation.com/thread...ec-2021-through-sep-2022.1273383/post-1318343

In that second link I suggested the following as a way to account for the wind:

"The wind really is the great confounder, both on the shooting, and the analyzing sides.

The issue is that's it's so subjective, just like Art has noted in his data.

Here's where I'm at with it right now.....for AZ, the fall matches have kinda become the start of each new XFT "season." So I think starting with the Oct night match I'll start using difficulty factors for wind? But instead of just subjectively saying "windy" or not we can do a graded system? I mentioned something similar in Ben's night match announcement but I thinking we can use NWS reporting of wind speeds to figure out the highest wind speed measured during a match, recorded as close as we can to where the match happens.

So maybe multiply the course average T by:
1 if highest wind speed 5mph or less
1.5 if highest wind speed 6-10mph
2 if highest wind speed 11-15mph
2.5 if highest wind speed 16-20mph
3 if highest wind speed 21+"

I've since pondered on this and I think it needs to come down in scale. For example, with what I originally proposed, we'd double the overall course Troyer for a wind of 11-15mph. That just seems too much, b/c 11-15mph will make a course harder, but I'm not sure it makes it TWICE as hard.

So, going forward, I propose this scale instead:
Multiply the overall Troyer factor for a course by the following:
1 if 5mph or less
1.25 for wind speeds 6-10mph
1.5 for wind speeds 11-15mph
1.75 for wind speeds 16-20
2 for wind speeds 21mph or greater

"wind speed" defined as the highest wind recorded by NWS during the match using their location pinpoint feature

Using last night's match as an example.....
The lowest Troyer was 24 and was the near target on lane 6 (1.25" kill zone @ 30 yards)
The highest Troyer was a 41.7 and was the far targets on lane 3 and lane 10 (both 3" kill zones @ 100 yards)
Average Troyer for the course was a 33.3, with no wind adjustment, which is how I've reported it for matches up to this point. To arrive at 33.3 for last night I DID multiply the 2 offhand targets Troyers by the 1.75 difficulty factor applied to forced standing shots.

Went to NWS website to pinpoint location.....
map.jpg

Then clicked on the three day history to get this data table.......
header.jpg

wind speed.jpg

I'm arriving at a max wind speed of 12, taken at 7:05pm (circled in red).

That would make the non-wind adjusted average Troyer of 33.3 be multiplied by 1.5 (wind adjustment factor) for a Troyer of 49.95.

That will represent an entirely new scale/reference point from previous matches but I'll do the 2022/2023 PHX winter season reports in that manner if shooters would like to tentatively adopt that method of calculating a course difficulty level. And if they're not, I'm open to suggestions.

Congrats again to Mike S for the course record.
Thanks to Phoenix Rod and Gun Club for having us.
Thanks to Ben for MD duties, and to all who helped set-up and tear-down.

Buy 30% cheaper from Europe? USD at near parity with the British Pound and the EURO

With the USD gaining 20% and 30% on the GBP and the EUR from a year ago, seems to be worth to pick up some airgun things cheaper from Europe?

For example, the FX Maverick Sniper is USD1800 at Utah Airguns, but EUR1320 (USD1275) at Krale (shipping excluded) and GBP1400-1500 (USD1481-1587).

coconuts migrate?

In Monty Python's Holy Grail It was suggested that coconuts migrate.
Then reading odenwald's thread about his unfortunate experience, it was suggested that
he purchased thousands of dollars of equipment so he could bash and complain about the vendor, and that it was all
just a ruse. My first thoughts without knowing all the facts were that's nuts. Who has that much money?
But then I recalled [ NOT TO GET POLITICAL I won't use names] a certain party is spending millions of tax payers
money to bash and complain about a certain [name to be withheld] person! So MAYBE COCONUTS DO MIGRATE
Opinions are usually based on experiences!

What do you say in your head? Or what do you do?

When I first got into this sport I woulda thought about it all night. Now that I utilize them in the field I try to avoid them but realize that they happen.
