Semi worthless thread about Taipan accuracy issues.

So I bought a Taipan Long in .22

It shot pretty damn well honestly, but seemed to be somewhat finicky with a flier pretty regularly. And being overly critical, I thought it could do better. As I like to do with any new gun I pulled the barrel to give her a good look over and push a pellet through to feel it out. The last couple CZ barrels I've dealt with had really tight chokes, but were otherwise very nice. That's exactly what I felt with this one, except I noticed the pellet didn't slip right out of the muzzle. More like it hung up and then "popped" out. I've seen this before in barrels that I cut a crown on myself, and the bit didn't cut just right and left a smeared cut/burr.

In my prior experiences with hacking around with different barrels, I knew this was a red flag.

So I turned a pilot to indicate the bore and get the barrel running true in the lathe. I faced off around .100" from the muzzle, and cut a new crown and gave it a quick deburr with some 600 grit lapping compound on a big Qtip.

Then I flipped the barrel around, and added a slightly shallower radius to the leade/breech/entry/whatever, just to ease loading.

Turned out okay I guess considering the equipment:

Leade/Inlet/Entrada:

And here's why this thread is mostly useless.......I didn't take any pics of the barrel or groups beforehand. Facepalm.

BUT!

I did take a pic of a pushed pellet before and after the hackjob. So there's that.

Left is before, right is after.

And here's the result in the groups. Barrel was dirty/seasoned and just had the chips blasted out with air and a cotton swab fired through with shop air. Rested the forearm on a cooler, sitting on my butt at 25 yards. 5 shot group:

With a good solid rest, and a cleaned barrel, I think we might have something here! :)

Sitting on the couch bored, thought I'd post this rambling in case you were bored too.

NLA WTS 4500psi SCBA 30 Minute Air Tank & Valve with Fill Hose Assembly

This is a ISI Carleton 30 minute SCBA tank and a Orcair fill valve assembly. The tank was made in 2007 and its last hydro was done in 2019. It is surplus from a local fire department, but in good condition. The valve is brand new, but I have been using this brand for a few years now and have had very good luck with them. It's unregulated and has two gauges, pressure release and a Foster fill port. I use the same setup and fill mine with a Yong Heng compressor.

Local pickup in Milford, Michigan or I can ship to the lower 48. (No P.O Boxes)

If picking up in person the tank will be filled to 4100psi, but if shipping I will need to empty it.

Asking $150 picked up in person or $180 shipped.

Taipan Long “Sniper”

488DD308-478E-4F12-9970-2AD5E0927DC6.jpeg

I finally finished the build of my Taipan Long transforming it into a slugger. 700mm CZ barrel, dual power plenums, a custom carbon fiber barrel tensioner, and a nylon washer behind the stock spring. With reg at 130 bar it’s plateauing with FX Hybrids around 1040 fps. I’m quite happy with the power output now to see what kind of accuracy we can do.

Taking a 12 fpe THEOBEN MFR .177 to 30 fpe !!

Sure enough a statement of fact, not a question but a reality in this project finished up before the holidays.

Started with a UK spec STOCK 12 fpe Theoben MFR in .177 caliber and made it a heavy pellet ( 13-16 grain ) as well Slug ( 12.5 grain ) into a mean little Ice Pick shooter.
Modifications are 100% replacement parts / pieces. Taking the MFR back to OEM spec simply putting the factory parts back inside :p

Essentially a complete heart & lung transplant sort of thing ... Fabricated & Replaced the following items:
NEW Poppet Seat
NEW Poppet Valve/Stem ( Balanced Configuration )
NEW Anti Bounce SSG assembly
NEW Light Weight Hammer
*NEW Longer LW ( 23.7") 12 groove no choke barrel. ( Extracted the last bit of performance )
Replaced HPA cylinder with a 250bar 500cc

Anywho ... 150 bar set point & 17" factory barrel results.
JSB 10.3 = 978 fps
JSB 13.4 = 895 fps
NSA 12.5 slug = 892
Overall +/- making @ 24 fpe being double the factory spec ... yea we found some more power ... But
:-\

*Lets re-barrel & get some more length and see what we get .. So took a 15mm LW 12 groove standard no choke and made it fit with a 23-3/4" Finished length.
Retested changing nothing else but adding 7 3/4" more barrel we get ...
JSB 10.3 = 1074 fps
JSB 13.4 = 977 fps
NSA 12.5 slug = 980 fps
& the JSB 8.4 just for giggles at 1129 fps, yea bit too fast ..Lol
Overall now +/- 26-28 fpe range.

Shoot a JSB 16g beast or H&N Sniper Magnum 16g it goes a tad over 30 fpe :p
Pretty crazy power from such a small plenum, It shoots pretty quiet for the output, but is using more air than a .22 at similar output. To be expected with smaller bore area.

Accuracy is about a quarters diameter at 80 yards with JSB 13.4 monster originals, Tad tighter with NSA 12.5 slugs. Very much Minuet of ground squirrel !!!

Looking for some guidance and input from some of the machinist on the forum

So I got a Buck rail moderator for my dressed up bandit, needed to tame the bark. My Bandit has the pressure gage in the end of the tube.
This is an add on as they do not come that was. While installing the moderator, it becomes evident that the gage is in the way for the moderator to fully seat.
No problem I have a lathe, a wood lathe but still a lathe. I was able to chuck the moderator up in one set of jaws that I have. First issue, I believe I need a different set of jaws for this work. While turning the area down that needed the reduction, I was wondering about turning derlin spring guides as well as other parts from derlin. Also turning some brass top hats. I know I would need a different cutter for the brass. So I and maybe other forum members would like to know how far I can push the use of a wood lath to do this kind of work?
Tools, chucks and other tools to look at getting. Here are some pictures of the moderator work it isn't exactly pretty but it worked out. I turned thas at my lathe's lowest speed, was not sure how the materiel would react to being turned. Thanks

They almost made it legal...

I live in Illinois. Until this year a rifle could not be used to hunt deer but new regs say a single shot .30cal or larger pushing 500fpe can now be used.
I got so excited because I know where to get a rifle that meets those specs(all I want is a Quackenbush .458 LA Outlaw to hunt deer with).
Then I read the following section and realized air rifles are still in a grey area(at best)...

Is there a pellet for this gun?

I acquired this gun and although I'm sure it's not worth anything, can't seem to find a pellet that fits it. Does anyone recognize it and know what it shoots?
20230109_083713.jpg
20230109_083749.jpg
There is only one marking on it and it's the Capital R on the top of the barrel and "Made in China" below it. The bore size is measured at .210". A .22 pellet is too large and a .20 pellet is too small. It is a spring loaded model. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

New to PCP, air tank question

Hello, I am new to PCP pistols. Looking to buy a Steyr LP50 to practice for my 22 bullseye shooting.

I pretty much settled in on the LP50 as it can shoot 5 rounds consecutively as the timed and rapid fire portions of our league shoots require 5 shots in 20 and 10 seconds respectively. Here is the question, what size 4,500 psi tank should I purchase, and where would be a good source for the purchase of a tank?

My little projects

Other hobbies have taken hold but I’m leaning back toward air guns I think… CFR was glass bedded with devcon 10110 but found it’s more accurate with just a pillar bedding and the tube free floated so it’s currently in that configuration. Has a touched up GRT blade. I’ll be making some sort of barrel weight for it soon. Last outing I was shooting .125 ctc at 35 yard and half inch at 50 which isn’t bad with only like 8.5fpe or a tad more. It’s got a Maccuri e3650 spring with custom piston sleeve and I tossed the plastic spring guide for a metal one. I’m hoping I can figure out how to get this one into a more FT style stock, preferably a blue laminate. If anyone has any suggestions I’m all ears. The accu still needs tuned but I’m holding off until I get a proper scope so I know what the real precision is like. ACCUs are heavier then CFRs but I can’t tell why besides maybe heavier parts and the velocity is more which I think is a restricted port size. The old hunter 220 is wife’s gun that’s got a GRT trigger I touched up. JM square wire spring, piston sleeve and a custom metal spring guide which replaced the old one that had a lot of slop. I built this one for smooth shooting and cocking for her. The plastic hunter varmint is simply a toss around gun I shoot without the stress of precision shooting. It was shooting really good with both brown box 7.9s and even the heavies 10.5 but for some reason, perhaps lack of barrel cleaning it’s now only shooting my JSB exacts well. All will be getting new scopes this year and if someone knows where I can get a nice stock that will work with my CFR I would be grateful. I’m not sure how that works, if I’d buy one without the action cut out or what but I’m not exactly good at wood working to say the least.

Air Compressor (Nomad) Reliability

I am on my 2nd compressor, this one is a Nomad 3. I have a feeling that it is crapping the bed…and it only has a few hours on it

Today, it wouldn’t pump more than 180 BAR into my FX Impact. The load LED on the compressor wouldn’t rise above 15.
I shut it off and unplugged it and waited a few minutes and then tried it again and this time it worked as usual and was fine pumping 250 BAR into the gun

What do you think happened m?
Is what happened something that you guys have experienced before?

My 1st Nomad died after only a year or so

PS Is there a pump out there for under a $1,000 that can be counted on?

Pretty disappointed right now

Doubled my Prophet

I picked up a 2nd RTI Prophet Performance V1 from forum member Leon.

I had a .22 with the 1:32 twist rate Lothar Walther polygonal barrel. This 2nd PP v1 is a .25 - which also has a slower twist rate (I believe the .25 is 1:24 - but not positive about this) Lothar Walther polygonal barrel.

Note that these V1 RTI proprietary barrels in .22 and .25 are DIFFERENT than the V2 barrels. The V2 barrels have faster twist rates optimized to shoot slugs as well as pellets. The V1 .22 and .25 “Long Range” proprietary barrels are optimized for pellets- and they are awesome for that.

I took this new .25 out today and zeroed a scope - as I only had 10 .25 pellets, I had to make every shot count. Took 5 to get zeroed at 45 yards - then shot a tiny 5 shot group. Then I was out of .25 pellets, lol.

So I swapped in my .177 barrel. RTI’s .177 and .30 Lothar Walther barrels are regular LW barrels - not polygonal. The .177 is 510mm, the other 3 calibers are 600mm.

I had just polished the .177 barrel - JB bore paste followed by JB bore Brite followed by Flitz. I even polished the transfer port hole in the barrel - you can still see some cotton in it in the pic, lol (I removed it before installing the .177 barrel).

These guns make swapping calibers about 4 minutes - super quick and easy. I did drop the reg pressure from 125 to 85 bar for .177. It was shooting JSB 10.3g at 1025 fps with the reg at 125. Dropping reg to 85 dropped the velocity to 911 fps.

In the pictures you can see the .177 vs. the .25. The .25 has a air stripper attached. My .22 RTI Long Range barrel does not have this air stripper - it looks exactly like the .177, just longer.

In the pictures you can also see the RTI barrel removal tool. It costs $25, and screws onto the muzzle of the barrel - making it simple to pull the barrel out of the shroud. No need to remove the shroud, which is bolted to the frame and very stiff.

So I now have the .25 as well as the .177 and .22 V1 Lothar Walther barrels. Both of my Prophet Performance rifles were purchased new in 2022. So, for those wondering, the 2022 full size Prophet Performance had Lothar Walther barrels in all 4 calibers. The .22 and .25 barrels were special - designed by RTI to win long range benchrest competitions with pellets.

The 2022 Prophet Performance COMPACT barrels may NOT be Lothar Walther in all calibers - I don’t own a PP Compact, so I don’t have information on the compact model.

I love these rifles - super accurate, insane power if you want to crank it up, simple and very compact - even the “full sized” version that I have two of.

Charging for pest removal

I am wondering if people have turned pesting into a side paid gig? What are people charging? I found a company in Canada that uses airguns to remove pigeons in a large urban area and charges $175-$250 per session. I am trying to get a feel of what this service might be worth? The last few summers I worked with a friend that's in charge of bylaw in my town (off the books) to remove some marmots free of charge. I have also been helping a local farmer out for the past few years with ground squirrels. Last summer a couple that had a problem with ground squirrels heard about me and reached out. I would love to get gas paid and a little bit of time covered. I feel like if I posted on the local FB site advertising services the comments would be full of "give me case of beer and I'll do it for free".
