Squirrel season 2023

In Illinois, squirrel season runs from Aug 1-Feb 15 and I'm excited for early mornings pre-sunrise walking/sitting in the woods!
For me it is the beginning of my hunt calendar since I only really hunt 3 things - squirrel, rabbit, and deer.
And I'm very lucky that I can just walk out my door and start hunting!

Since last season, it seems the squirrels have mostly forgotten that I'm a threat. They used to run the second I popped out the door, not so much now...I'm sure that'll change quickly once I start shooting them again, lol.

This year I have two low budget guns to chose from - a .25 Avenger and the .22 Notos. Last year I only had the Avenger, so I'm looking forward to using the quieter and easier to carry Notos for stalking in the woods. Once the leaves fall and the squirrels can hear/see me coming more easily, I'll use the Avenger to reach out from a bit farther away.

Anybody else pumped to get back out hunting?

PCP Rifle  SOLD Wester Airguns Sidewinder .30 Cal Semi/Full Auto

I bought this gun in March 2023. It had some quality control issues but they were fixed by Airguns of Arizona, the official service center for Western Airguns.
The reg was set to 140 by AOA and I left it so, it shoots very accurately JSB diabolo 44.75gr pellets to 900FPS.
The gun is really fun to use but very loud so I disassembled the baffle and inserted insulation foams in the grooves (see pics) and that dramatically reduced the bark.
I'm using a
SIG SAUER Tango-MSR FFP 1-10x26mm Rifle Scope 34mm Tube First Focal Plane, Color: Black, Coyote, Tube Diameter: 34 mm which retails for around $700 and is probably the best LPVO under $1000.
I'm asking $1790 shipped for the gun alone or $2190 shipped for both. The bipod is not included.

Creme Rises to the Top

Creme Rises to the Top - it's an ol country saying that probably relates to making butter, candles and suet.
In the airguns world this saying applies like this:

The gun(s) that give you the most joy, leave the gun safe or gun rack the most often. As such these airguns get used the most.
They may not always be the most accurate, but they do load easily and their ergonomics allow them shoulder well with a consistent cheek weld. They don't fight you. And of course you don't want to keep fiddling with something....to make it work for you.
I own plenty of high end air gun stuff - meh - but it's not about the money; it's about form and function coming together to create a positive experience which helps me to continualy improve my field target game day by day and week by week. Doesn't matter the reason... just matters that we observe it when it happens and think about why.

For me, three of my .177 FT rifles keep coming out of the safe = A FRANKENRAW TM1000 tuned by @Motorhead and a Daystate Tsar tuned by @AirSmithCA, Right behind these two is a Daystate Revere tuned by @Kerndtc . No, no, no - you don't have to tune a gun to enjoy it; but a properly tuned gun makes the best use of air and can help you extract the most from it. I like these three particular platforms so much, that i have done my best to buy a backup for each of them; in case one was lost by the airlines or stolen or one were to need a major service; which all things pneumatic require from time to time - like o rings and hydro testing and so on.

You may also notice that the stock on the RAW TM1000 is the same as the Stock on the Daystate Tsar - because this stocks ergonomics works for me!

I've also thought a lot about the glass sitting on top of these particular rigs... the cherry on top of the dessert.
How was my choice of a scope affecting my joy factor, or, my perception of the airgun itself?
In the last two years I've learned that a scope needs to provide a user with a forgiving eye box and can be mounted at a reasonable height. Too big a scope and suddenly a great gun is thrown totally off balance; too dark a tube and suddenly you can't find the damn target or the KZ in dark lanes; yes yes yes, it has to be able to range correctly - and the reticle has to make almost intuitive sense.
I've learned that the most expensive glass, like the most airgun doesn't guarantee you any more bang for my buck. Especially for a pair of old eyes. Hawkes Sidewinders 30 mm scopes hold their own; even against my March or Sightrons. Below each of my three favorite FT rigs sports a different optic, Hawke, Sightron and Athlon. It also matters which ranging wheel you have on your scopes. To date, Joe Garland makes the best ranging wheel followed by Eric Sanders of Scope Werks.

Which ONE airgun is your Creme? And which scope is the Cherry on top?

FX  FX Crown MKII .25 Velocity Issues..

My FX Crown in .25 with a 600mm Heavy Superior liner, Slug power Kit with 26gram hammer weight, HUMA Transfer Port, huma-air gen3 regulator installed, and shooting 30grain ZAN projectiles the power adjuster on HIGH, hammer spring wheel on 23 and im getting amazing velocity at 980 to 1020 fps, the problem is about 10 to 15 shots into a magazine my velocity will consistently drop down from 950, to 900, to 850, to 800 to 750 down to 700 almost. So when that happens ill adjust the power wheel over to medium and keep the hammer wheel at 23 and my velocity goes back up to about 850+ So I called UTAH Airguns spoke with a tech and he advised me to polish the hammer and the hammer weight and make sure there arent any burs on any of the pieces, so i did as he advised and I am still experiencing this, what is going on with my gun? I have tried everything. Any help? Please?

Regulator is at 180 as well.

kudos to UPS and Pirate Shipping

It doesn't always happen this way, but when it does, i am thankful:

The shipping carrier has notified us that the package they transported was different than what you entered when purchasing the shipping label:

Weight changed from 12 lbs to 7 lbs 11 oz

+$9.24 Refund

The shipping carrier has credited your Pirate Ship account a total of $9.24. You can review these transactions in your reports page.

These adjustments are coming from the shipping carrier—not Pirate Ship—and would have happened no matter where you buy the label. The carrier's automated machines detected that your package was different than you said it would be. Common differences include:
  • Different weight.
  • Different dimensions.
  • Dropped off in a different zipcode.
  • Using Priority Mail packaging with a different service.
  • Using Flat Rate packaging without buying that specific Flat Rate service.
  • Address correction was required for delivery.
  • Residential vs. Commercial address.

Of course, the automated machines the carriers use for this sometimes make mistakes. If you're sure your shipment is what you said it was, you can dispute the change. To do so, just open the shipment in Pirate Ship and click the “Dispute this adjustment” link to start the process.

You can find more information on the carrier's adjustment systems and the dispute process in this article.

If you have any questions just let us know, we’re here to help!

So which end is really the dirty end?

Hi All,
Today's rant is brought to you by a rotten Roast Duck I received at a local restaurant. While it was true that most of the duck smelled fine, the neck smelled like rotten bird crop, a unique smell familiar to poultry and fancy bird keepers, and the duck was sent back to the chef!
So that got me thinking of a question for the forum: which end of the quarry is really the dirty end, the head or the rear? I don't know besides what the hunter's ed class told me, about gutting the quarry quickly before it spoils. They didn't say anything about the head end, except something about antlers, if the quarry even has them.
I do note that I seem to suffer a lot more head end infections than rear end infections. Does that mean there are more pathogens in the head area (ear, nose and throat)? By the time things get to the rear end, passing through an acidic stomach, enzymes in the intestine, an immune system along the way, have the pathogens mostly been dealt with? Is the food in the digestive tract more fermentable or "active" toward the head... and already fermented or digested, and the microbes relatively benign toward the rear? Should hunters or home-grown meat eaters be paying a little more attention to the head and throat (esophagus)?
What do y'all do when field dressing game?
Mike

Absolute Bottom (Rabbit Hole)

I think I may finally be on the correct path towards the bottom of the (bottomless?) rabbit hole haha!

All I need now is an Alkin Mariner W31, a limited edition walnut stock Huben K1 in .25, and two American Air Arm’s Evol’s… (one chambered in .30 and one in.22 of course). I suppose I may as well add two J.B. Great White’s and a an Air Tanks Plus cascade system while I’m all in!

Wish me luck 😆

Have you found your bottom yet?

Moab Utah

Cody here, First post!
Grew up in tx predator and wing shooting. New to air guns, bow hunter for 15 years shoulder issue and all the prairie dogs have me excited about making the plunge and have narrowed down to the following.

I’ve never been much of a paper puncher, more into hunting.

Been watching and reading and have come to this so far

fx impact 3 .22 for bird squirrel plinking and a .35 barrel kit for p dogs possibly fox small varmits
I like the barrel change option simplicity/long track record but not sure it would be worth retuning sighting etc please share your thoughts.

impact 3 with multiple barrels or seperate caliber dynamic or panthera.

Thinking an aea hp or element in .50 cal for up close and personal hog ground blind tree stand hunts or possibly the shorter Zues .72

Nomad compressor open to recomendations

need insight on a refil bottle or bottle sizes.

more interested in quality than budget, steer me in the right direction.

PCP Rifle  SOLD Reduced Taipan Compact 22

Hey guys, selling this almost new Taipan 22 compact CZ Barrel for a friend. He purchased the gun new a couple months ago from Tony, and decided to go a different route. He asked me to list it for him.

Gun is in my possession and ready to be shipped. These are getting hard to find especially since talon tunes it out of them- and now that version 2 is out.. good luck getting a new original vet.

Gun will come with factory box, 2 mags, single shot tray and fill probe.

has a few small marks on the stock but in my opinion gun is a 9 out of 10. I haven't shot it, its just sitting in the box waiting for its new home. I wanted to keep it and buy it from my buddy, but my mutant has my attention and I don't really need another compact.....

Nonetheless, asking price shipped to CONUS is 1100 PPFF OBO. no trades, he just wants to fund a boat.

HW/Weihrauch  Vertical stringing for HW 35E

Shot tight 5 shot group yesterday with 177 H&N FT 4.51 at 20 yards but today a 5 shot 2" nice vertical string down the middle with same pellet. What causes that? On the internet, just talks about firearms vertical stringing. One post says you get it when you pull the trigger at different times in your breathing cycle. I am sure it is something I am not doing consistently but cannot figure it out. Thanks in advance for all replies.

AirMaks Arms  I didn't mean to

Recently picked up a Krait and what a fantastic rifle. Got a chance to shoot some yesterday, accurate and not an air hog which both make me happy. Sooooo, what do I do but come home and tinker. Bad me.
Just wanted to switch the plenum guage to a digital one I had for fine tuning. Dumped my air and swapped it out. Then I notice the bottle guage was crooked and wanted to make it straight, bigger oring should work. Oops didn't work so put it back the way it was and air up. Now after trying 4 orings, couple different sizes and even trying the guage that I replaced it leaks soon as it gets to 50+ bar...
Local hardware store has a good assortment but are they the right type, (rubber compound?) I just don't know. Anyone have an idea or do I wait for U/A to open and order replacement one's.
Really like the Airmaks guns and would love to get this sorted
Thanks Greg
