Tuning  Regulators and O-ring longevity

Just wanted to pose a question to the tuners and DIY guys who do their own repairs. A common failure I see is with the O-ring on the small end (high side) of a regulator spool. What usually happens is the regulator will begin leaking out of its atmospheric vent. Upon disassembly, this particular O-ring is found to have lost all elasticity and just crumbles to bits. Meanwhile the larger O-ring on the opposite end looks and feels fine.

My best guess is it has to do with the repeated adiabatic heating of the plenum refilling, causing the elastomer to rapidly age and harden. Granted, both O-rings are exposed to the plenum air and therefore experience a temperature rise as the pressure recovers. But perhaps the reason the large O-ring doesn't degrade to the same extent is because the big end of the spool is a larger thermal mass that helps absorb away the heat.

Anyway it occurred to me I've seen this failure again and again on Huma regulators and others sharing a similar design but I don't remember ever running into it on a Ninja paintball regulator. Why? Well, the fundamental operation is the same and in some cases the regulators even have similar dimensions so that doesn't seem to be the reason why. But Ninja uses polyurethane O-rings whereas the brittle O-rings always seem to be the more common Buna-N. If indeed that's the relevant difference, it runs counter to the industry data on O-rings, for which polyurethane has the lowest temperature rating of all common elastomers.

Do any of you guys have experience or knowledge that either substantiates or challenges this theory?

What's your name?........TONY,......What's yours?..........Springer.....EBR

Well if your name was Tony, it was a clean podium sweep at the 50 yard springer event at EBR!!
Tony Starr was 3rd, Tony Pellegrino was 2nd, and Tony Turchetta was 1st.
The springer field more than doubled from last years EBR. We had 12 shooters and it was a blast.
Nothing like watching your pellet dance all over your card. I am glad I didn't have to score the cards.
Here are some pics of the field and the winning TX200 in a Lukas FT stock.

PCP Rifle  SOLD Evol 30cal

Looking to sell my evol 30 I purchased used from a member here a few months ago. It’s in near flawless condition, sports a luthAR buttstock, and hogue grip. It’s currently set pretty close to stock, shooting 44.75 jsb at 912fps for about 3 mags.
I’ve done nothing to this gun other than mount a scope and zero it. It’s been quite a safe queen for me as I mostly shoot 22cal and my evol mini gets used for that task.

Gun is very light, and powerful, and really fun to shoot. Would be ideal for competition shooting, or just hunting with how rugged it is built. No leaks at all, and reg is rock steady!

Asking $1800 shipped conus in the same case I recieved it in. Will also include 1 factory mag, 1 carm mag, and donnyFL 1/2 20 adapter.

Any questions or more pictures, message me.

Buy with confidence confidence knowing I’m an established member here, and have 100% positive feedback in the classifieds.

Will trade for evol 30 magnon, or evol 22cal 15”.

Thanks for looking.

Scope and rings, barrel wrench not included. Will include full package of hybrid slugs with it.

N/A  Let’s talk Safety

Just recently a AGN member posted a video (not of himself) of a simple repair being made on barrel cocker. Not to throw anyone under the bus, but many new members need to understand some basic springer safety, especially when working on one.
I want to start by explaining the function and engagement of a trigger. Here are two different adjustable triggers commonly used. The Turkish made Quattro and the German made Rekord. Both four lever adjustable triggers. In the pictures the actual metal to metal engagements are within the yellow circles. The Quattro is the first picture and fully engaged. The Rekord is the second picture and adjusted to a “very light” engagement. Barely any metal to metal contact at all. This is how a trigger is made lighter and with less/no creep. The Rekord is a finer and more precise trigger unit than the Turkish made Quattro. But with lengthened screws added to the Quattro (which I do) it can be made just as light as the Rekord. With literally a fraction of metal to metal engagement.
With this in mind, it is easy to understand that how a cocked gun, left open with no hands on the barrel, could easily let loose. Hence many a bent upwards, barrels.
Now watch the video. Hard for me to watch. If a repair needs to be made like this, the spring/barrel should be removed or the barrel should be constrained with a make-shift strap. Don’t trust your ability to hold the barrel with one hand and stick your fingers/thumb in the guillotine.
I would also encourage good safety by holding the barrel back with one hand while loading with the other. Other good safety measures are welcome on this post. Thank you.

Hawke optics apology by me

I had stated on a post here that, I thought, Hawke Vantage scopes were not rated for spring piston guns. A couple member responded that they are rated for 12 foot pound and under springers. I reached out to Hawke on Saturday and got a reply this morning. They stated that all of their scopes are rated for spring piston guns. No mention of any restrictions. I apologize for assuming something before checking. Don

Results  Team Centercut at EBR 2023

EBR 2023 was the best run, most fun event that we’ve competed in. All events were full and things went off smoothly all weekend. Great job AoA!!
The Team had seven shooters competing Pro and two in Sportsman, plus two additional in Sportsman that were staying with the Team, so eleven total.
Five of us made the Pro finals (100Y) and Derrick Wall @zx10wall finished 4th overall. Auggie Sotelo @Bigragu was staying with the Team and finished 2nd (100Y) in Sportsman class.

Left to right, Derrick, Mike, Dave, Scott, Caleb, Tony, Barbara, and Peykan.

The Team standout was Caleb Dickenson @okieairgunner, who won the Pro Speed Silo, defeating Tom Adams who had won in 2019, 2021, and 2022. Caleb also won the Extreme Field Target event shooting 39/40, and finished 2nd in the EFT GP National Championship one point behind John Bagakis. Great shooting Caleb!!

Inconsistency in Pellets can be frustrating

Hello everyone,

I just finished shooting a full tin (250 pieces) of JSB Jumbo 15.89gr pellets and found them to shoot fairly consistent at 10-meter and 25–yards. I opened a new tin (500 pieces), loaded 10 in the magazine and had to push with a good bit of force to load the first pellet into the rifle. Made the shot and the POI was almost 1-inch high left of the Bull. Second pellet also hard to load and the POI was 3/4-inch low right. Shot a third and the POI was 1-inch right. Removed the magazine and pushed out the remaining pellets. What the heck  ?

Got my Pellet Sizing Tool and inserted the first pellet. Normally a 5.5'ish pellet will drop about 1/3 the way into the Tool and require very little pressure to push it through. With this first pellet and the next four the pellet only dropped in to the point that the Skirt was flush with the opening. It required quite a bit of pressure to push them through and even the Head of the pellet shows where it contacted the inner wall ( see photo - yellow arrow ). I loaded and shot these 5 re-sized pellets and not one was within ½ inch of the Bull? So now I have 500 pellets that not usable. Note the wording on the Tin’s lid that I circled in yellow ~ Carefully Selected ~ really o_O???

FX  Does your velocity change depending on full tank or less?

FX Wildcat MK3 VP with a 300 bar bottle been having issues with consistency where it was varying almost 200 fps within a few shots. I got it to be consistent but now while trying to tune, the velocity changes depending how full the tank is. If the tank is at 300 bar down to about 220 bar it shoots at about 860fps on power wheel 3 but once it drops under 220 bar, the velocity goes up to 930. First reg is set to 160 and second reg is set to 120... I can only think that the velocity is going up as the tank pressure goes down because the valve is opening more due to not having to fight as much pressure from the reg and this only happens on the lower settings of the power wheel. Power wheel 5-7 stays the same velocity no matter what. Overall it is just weird because the regs should be preventing any of these changes coming from the bottle anyways. If it is the regs, which one would you suspect or maybe both?

Airforce  Pa Small Game 22 pcp ....Umarex Origin or Aiforce condor?

First off I already have a compressor.... Scba tanks...Aqua Environment External regulator... I have property here in Pennsylvania I'd like to small game hunt....Our regulations are .177 and .22 cal airgun s only.... Sucks a lil....I'm limited on funds but hate to miss another small game season. I can buy a refurbished Umarex Origin 22 cal for $206.00 on EBay... I'm Also considering Airforce outlet page ...seconds on a Airforce Condor 22 cal....probably 24 inch version... $500.00 and some change... I assume barrels on both will be rough...I'm experienced in hand lapping bore with lead laps...I'm familiar with Airforce platform.... Have tethering set-up..... Origin has a stock.... Probably not hold.sensitive..... I know my Umarex Airsaber much less hold sensitive and easier to shoot than my Texan....Weight is a concern... I'm semi handicap.. Any thoughts of you who.are 22 cal small game hunters chime in...I'm also.setup up.for.casting ... So id like to cast for either choice in the future... I'm willing to modify and upgrade for performance if cost effective..... Thanks friends

Umarex  Notos and Bug Buster

My shoebox compressor came today so I aired up my Notos and set out to zero in my Bug Buster 3-9x32. This is my first PCP, and I am having a bit of a difficult time with the eye relief on the Bug Buster - I may need to sort out mounts to bring it back further.

It seemed like it was fairly easy to zero I at 12 yards, but I noticed that it was getting pretty inconsistent - especially if I changed my magnification lower then back to higher.

I realize they aren’t premium glass, but are big busters notorious for not holding zero with magnification changes? I’m more of an iron sights guy, so trying to figure out where my issue is.

Thanks!

Spectrum Analysis

A spectrum analysis is a compilation of all frequencies and the power levels associated with each over some specified interval.

This is a spectrum analysis of two signals.
Both signals (red and blue) are about 0.35 seconds long.
This graph shows a comparative spectrum analysis of the samples.
It shows frequencies between 0Hz and 22kHz in 512 bins with each bin representing a channel 43 Hz wide.
The two signals are over laid.
The blue signal analysis is for the bare rifle.
The red signal analysis is for the rifle with the moderator. The moderator used generally tests as about 10 dB below the bare rifle if you are checking with a cellphone microphone from a distance of about 15 feet. The cell phone microphone favors the low end of the spectrum. It also sounds very good and flat to the average listener.

red&blue.jpg

This very clearly shows what is happening with this moderator (or pretty much any moderator). The moderator captures the low frequency energy passing through the moderator and translates it to higher frequencies. It emits that energy at the higher frequencies. Those frequencies are mostly above about 6 or 8 kHz. The higher the better. The longer this takes the better.

So the moderator should take a blast of high pressure air which contains some set of frequencies and slow that air down so that the signal takes longer to pass (removes the crack) while at the same time translating those low frequencies to higher ones.

That is what it has to do.

EDIT: I want to make clear that the graph represents the PEAK power level for each "bin" during the sample period. IOW the graph does not start at 0 seconds and progress forward. That's not how this works. If you pick any point on the graph, that point is the PEAK power level for the frequencies (the bin) represented during the sample time.
