HPA Tank Failure - Should I Be Concerned? What Happens When A SCBA or SCUBA Tank Fails? What Happens When A Valve Fails? (VIDEOS)

I've read several AGN posts about what a SCUBA or (mores in most of our cases) SCBA tank will and won't do when it fails. Similarly discussed is valve failure. Today I decided to look and see what I could find as far as video content on the topics. I didn't conduct an extensive search, but I found a few videos of interest.

This is a controlled experiment where what appears to be a SCUBA tank explodes in an explosion-proof compartment (due to what I assume to be filling the tank well beyond the maximum rated fill pressure). It appears if exploded when approaching 320 bar. I believe that SCUBA tanks are rated to safely hold 3000 psi or approximately 207 bar. Most SCBA tanks that concern airgunners are rated to be safely filled to maximum pressure of 4500 psi or approximately 310 bar.

In the following video, the valves on several HPA SCBA tanks were intentionally knocked off in a guillotine-styled device in an open and somewhat controlled setting. They behaved somewhat like cheap fireworks you may have played with as a child.

"MAE Test and Burst of a SCBA Cylinder - Self Contained Breathing Apparatus" This video appears to be a scholarly and scientific approach to explaining SCBA tank failure and is conducted and filmed in a controlled environment. According to the content creator(s), MAE stands for "Modal Acoustic Emission." I don't know what this is, but it gives me something to look into later. The content creator claims that this method is used by the United States Navy in expanding the life of SCBA tanks (refer to the video description within the link).

I will add videos to this post as I find them.

PCP Rifle  SOLD Air Arms S500xs .177 New in Box latest generation

New in the box Air Arms S500 .177. Scope has never been mounted.

These are out of stock at the importer and Air Arms doesn’t expect more to ship for two more months in February ’24.

But this one could arrive in time for Santa to put under the Christmas tree for that special someone.

I had one just previous to this one so what I will tell you about it is, first hand experience of owning one.

This is one of the latest models if you look closely at the pressure gauge, supplied chrony printout and owners manual.

The stock is a deep rich color without a blemish of any kind on it or the deep bluing of the action.

Although an S510 is a 10 shot magazine fed breech, this S500 is ideal for any Field Target class as it has a generous breech port for easy loading of the pellets. There is no need to purchase additional expensive ($60) magazines and your top shooters will tell you to choose a single shot over a multi-shot. This particular rifle is quite capable of 20 fpe max AAFTA ruling and because of the factory installed regulator and higher pressure fill rating (250bar) you can still get an easy 60 shots @ 900 fps from a single fill. The fully adjustable power port also allows you to tune the gun for the pellets of your choice and can be turned down to a basement target shooting speed of less than 275 fps.

Why aren't there more M3's in HFT?

I have been looking at this subject for a while and cannot find anything or anyone that can give a solid answer. I've looked through the results posts and it appears that Palmyra indoor FT has a few people that shoot M3's, but that seems to be it. I'm kinda stumped. I have an M3 in .30 and I can stack holes all day long at 30yds with an UTG scope of all things. A lot of winning guns at EBR are M3's. They are proven to be very accurate. You would figure that it would make sense that more people would be using M3's in HFT for the accuracy they have.

I don't want to open a can of worms with people who are for, or against, M3's in general, but I would like to hear real world experiences. Are they just not as accurate in .177? Or accurate at 20 fpe? Are they too heavy? Etc.? I know Daystate seems to dominate in HFT, but is it just a matter of the sheep following the shepherd? The reason I bought the impact in the first place was because it won, or at least had major places in RMAC and EBR. It must be a great rifle right? Or is it just over represented? I fell for the hype but I'm very happy with the purchase and would do it again.

So here is the crux. I want to get into HFT but I don't want to buy a whole new rig. I just bought a 700mm .177 barrel, and a new Athlon Helos, and a boat load of pellets. I'm starting to feel nervous that I may have made a mistake. I guess my question is for people who have used, or directly know someone who has used a M3 and can give an unbiased reason for or against.

Please remember that this not the place to to praise nor bash the M3 in general. It is strictly about the pros and cons of the M3's use in HFT.

Let the comments begin!

Shooting technique - grip

Hi AGNers,

I was reading in the Shooting Tips forum on this site and saw this:

1- Proper Grip: The first step to the trigger finger being able to properly pull the trigger is to ensure that the grip on the rifle or pistol is correct. For rifles this means that the trigger hand is firmly gripped around the stock applying slight rearward pressure into the shoulder and the support hand is gripping the fore end of the rifle supporting the rifle.

I’ve been thinking on this topic quite a bit lately. I don’t agree with “trigger hand firmly gripped - slight rearward pressure into shoulder ” . I believe this shooting form tip is “left over” from powder burner days. These PCP rifles of today are recoilless. As such, I believe best accuracy is achieved by applying as minimal force as possible when shooting from a rest - especially fully supported benchrest. I’d recommend not even touching rifle butt to shoulder and just thumb and index finger on stock creating just enough pressure to hold crosshairs steady and release shot.

I do agree with the breathing tip outlined in the Shooting Tips forum.

For target shooters here on AGN:

Do you use a light hold with PCPs?
Do you use any shoulder pressure when you shoot from a bench?

It is so much easier with powder burners….

For my next mule deer hunting I changed the scope of my 30-06…..

It took me two 15 minutes sessions shooting on total less than 20 shots to get the rifle zeroed at 220 yards and at the end of the second session I was able to hit a clay at 420 yards.

On the other hand I have many weeks deciding which .30 Cal should I bring with me…. With which scope I get better results at 50 yards (zero) and up to 200 yards (not thinking I will shot at that distance, but among 100 and 150 maybe). Which give more shots per fill, which one has a better safety….. which one is more reliable, which one is easier to handle, with which one recording would be easier, which one has the best possible power, which one would make me to waste less air ……..

I am confident that I should hit the deer with the 30-06 if it gives me chance.

I am conscious that in order to be able to shoot something bigger than a rabbit with the air rifle I will need to be lucky…..

Not quite sure what to make of this.

On November 22 I ordered and paid for two HW45's from Wes who then ordered them from AOA as we had not seen any come into Canada in the last two years. Looking at the USPS tracking it was picked up on November 28th. On December 11th I see the last entry stating that it is in Bell Gardens CA awaiting a returns agent. On Friday December 15th Wes got notified that USPS refuses to transport it any further and are returning the package to AOA. Does this happen often? I was hoping this one came through as they would then hand over to Canada Post to complete the shipment .......without gouging me for "customs fees" .....a few weeks after delivery...as I've experienced a few times before with the couriers, Fedex and UPS.

Other  Estate sale finds

Hey guys

Well I just got back from an individuals house looking at some guns. The owner of the rifles was around 65 years old that had a heart condition that recently passed away. His brother was given the rifles to sell and get some money out of them. My buddy was looking at some of the black powder rifles while I was there to look at the airguns. For airguns there was a Hatsan BT65 .35 cal, Gammo Whipser Fusion Elite, Gammo Swarm, FWB 601, Beeman R1 .177, Hatsan pistol. All in all I don't think I did to bad with everything and the brother was happy to be able to send some cash back to the family.

I tested all the guns and everything functions with the exception of the FWB601. It seems there is a seal out on the rifle that I would like to get fixed, but not sure where to start looking.

When I swing the arm on the 601 to bring the piston back everything seems fine, but when I close the handle I am getting air escaping from the transfer port. I am looking right now on a break down picture to get everything apart and do a good lubrication job as well as a reseal. I can tell the previous owner shot the hell out of the rifle and really loved it. So a reseal wouldn't be a bad thing.

Then also wondering what some of you guys would have offered to pay for these rifles?

AirMaks Arms  Incredible little Katran SC!

A little video of my Katran SC. Tuned with love to shoot JTS 18.1 at 21fpe. First 6 shots (right after sitting overnight) at my dilapidated tiny spinner and then the head of a grain of corn, from 40yards. Eye of mouse accuracy from this $1000 little gem!

Building squirrel feeder to hunt!

So my little 7yr wanted to hammer on something so I quickly tasked her with the opportunity to help dad out with a squirrel feeder for me to hunt off of. So we found a position in a brush pile where our neighbor put cedar branches at and then cut shooting lanes through the woods to have clear shots off the feeder. I have to say this little 1 did a fine job of building a redneck feeder and shooting position for us. Below is a picture of last year haul from the setup she made at another property. Will have picture soon of current setup. So my question to you fellow members are do you blind hunt over feeder or feed and would this be the approach you would start young hunters off to? No right or wrong answer. Just need collect wisdom on how to teach 5 little girls how to hunt! Also there is a picture of the survival shelter/ shooting blind we made.

Bipods/Rests  SOLD [SOLD] Adjustable Carbon Fiber Tripod w/ Ballhead & Picatinny Quick Detach

Hello AGN:

I have very nice carbon fiber adjustable tripod w/ ballhead and picatinny quick detach mount. This tripod is great because it is light, compact & portable and gives you a lot more flexibility & adjustability than a normal bipod while still being very easy to bring with you in your backpack as needed. It is just under 12" end to end with the legs retracted and a little over 15" when extended; the legs can unfold & secured in three different positions as shown in the photos below. The ballhead is full adjustable in 360* and the picatinny quick release mount makes it easy to mount your picatinny rail equipped rifle. Given the smaller size of this tripod, it is best suited for smaller, lighter rifles like the Edgun Leshiy 2 or similar rifles. Price is $75 shipped.

I've got plenty of references here so please feel free to check them on the Member Feedback forum prior to purchasing. Paypal Friends & Family payment is prefered (otherwise, please add 3.5% to cover the fees). Local pickup in the SF Bay Area is available as well.

Thanks

How I made my FX magazines much better

Hi there! I've a FX Dreamline Tactical Compact and an Impact M3 in 0,177 and had some probs with the magazines, especially with the dreamline mag. The spring was too stiff and all the pellet skirts were damaged before they were fed into the barrel. So I took it apart and set the spring from the 12 o' clock position to the 6 o' clock position. Fine, no damaged skirts anymore but after a short time I've got feeding problems because the drum wouldn't rotate the last 5 or 6 pellets. Took the magazine apart again and could locate the O-Ring between the screw and the nut to be the problem. When the spring is not tensioned enough the drum wobbles around, up and down and the O-Ring works like a brake on the drum. Tried some silicone oil on the O-Ring with no luck. Then I found some P.T.F.E. foil I had lying around, 1,3mm thick and thought that could solve the problem. So I drilled a 4mm hole through the foil for the screw and cut the rest with a sharp scissor to the right size. Took the O-Ring out and replaced it with my teflon ring. What a difference. You can screw in the screw much tighter now so the drum will not wobble anymore. At the same time you can set the spring to the 6 o' clock position without any feeding problems because there is much less friction anymore. The Impact magazine benefits even more from the mod because evrything is so much bigger and the drum wobbles around even more. Great little mod which makes the magazines so much better.

Western Sidewinder .30 !!

I remember checking out the Western Sidewinder a while back & didn't really know much about them so I ended up with The RTI Prophet which was an excellent shooter but I never researched the Western ....I know this is a knowledgeable experienced group here ...are in the same league with big boys ...I know prices are right there with them...lol
Thanks again gentlemen!!

RTI  RTI p3 .177

i bought a brand new p3 in .177 10 days ago the riffle sounds out of balance like it has too much hammer on it , but the power wheel is on minimum. it doesnt sound at all like the one i tested in the shop and their tune is the same. any help how to make it sound smoother ? i tried a FX maverick that shoots 100fps faster than my RTI and it sounds butter smooth

Airforce  Airforce Condor and slugs

I have an unloved Condor in .22cal sitting in the safe and was wondering if it was possible to convert one of these over to a slug gun in .22cal or .25cal with any success. Ideally it would be a MOA or sub MOA gun at 100 yards. Has anyone had success putting regulators in these rifles? My intended use would be crows at 100 yards, or a little further.

Huben  GK1 mounts etc.

Some of you have been creating mounts for the GK1, and that is awesome. And we all know the mount M0ist0ne created (see topic, visit his shop), and it seems to be the most time proven and user friendly option so far 👌

While I wait for that mount to arrive (being Euro and all) I was already trying out other options that don’t require any machining etc.

I figured I’d share some concepts/try-outs and create a topic where we can share the options that are out there. As it’s good to have options :)

Picatinny rail:
First thing I tried was this airsoft rear sight rail. By the looks of it, it could fit in the slot of the rear sight. And it does (sort of):

4A67E2BC-B659-456C-BF0F-647F7BB8D14E.jpeg

By removing a bit of material it fits nicely into the rear sight slot.

IMG_3739.jpeg

The second fixing hole can be used to insert the original short screw and a tiny nut with some spacers (exactly fitting the sight slot) to keep the mount aligned.

IMG_3738.jpeg

With a screw a, little longer than the original rear sight screw, it’s easily mounted.

This airsoft rail is polymer, so you can really tighten it down. But there is also a alu version available.

I think with some more attention (cleaner sanding, better spacers etc) this mount could work. But it’s fixed with just the one screw and I have no idea if this will hold, but hey: it’s a start :)

RMR Plate:
I used the mounting plate from a ‘RMR off-set mount’ like this.

92CE6E20-B451-4F49-B202-0F2D5AF85943.jpeg

Again using the fixing hole for the rear sight, with a second screw and a random nut (made to fit the slot) to keep it aligned.
Also fixed by just the one screw, but this seems to be rock solid. I’ll be using this option with a holsun red dot and see if it sticks 😅

Another idea based on these:
Maybe someone can CNC a mount like this, that fits right into the rear sight slot, and also utilize the push-through pin of the original sight. So it’s fixed in 2 places.
Just an idea, I’d buy it :)

I have no clue if the single screw will be enough to hold the mount in place. I have yet to test it with a complete shooting session.
So as always: try at your own risk :)

Looking forward to see other options!

RWS  My 10 cent Elevation Screw, LOL 😆

Rebuilding a friend of mines RWS 93/ Cometa 300. It was also missing the plastic elevation screw and I haven’t been able to locate one, except overseas and shipping is prohibitive. So figured I would just make one for now. A dime was the perfect diameter and already knurled soo……I found an appropriate metric screw, cut the head off, filed the end square, drilled a hole in the dime and filed it square with a needle file, peened the screw end and voila! rear elevation screw! Perhaps a little hack‘ish but it works perfectly, made of metal vs plastic original and I even drilled some dimples underneath for the click stops. Flame away! Haha.

Athlon 15-60x56, Heras vs Ares

I plan on shooting in the 2024 WFTF match in Phoenix. I have only used up to 24x scopes in FT up to this point, so decided I better get a higher mag scope with better focus range finding. I had the opportunity to look through both the Heras and Ares 15-60x56 at different times and was impressed except for the too thin reticle. They both snap well with a small gap between 50yds and 55yds. The reticles are hard to see in dark areas. The Ares has a lit center dot, so that helps some. Since I plan on clicking the scope, that might be good enough. I ordered the Ares and today was able to compare side by side with my friend’s Heras at the range.

They are both usable at even 60x with good image quality. Supposedly, the Ares has UHD glass, but both my friend and I judged the Heras just ever so slightly better at reading small text at 55yds. Unless one needs the lit center dot, we both judged the two scopes to be functionally identical. Dimensions are identical. Evens the turrets caps are interchangeable.

Athlon is the only brand of scope that I buy these days. And both are excellent scopes. Seems like an unjustified cost premium for just the benefit of a lit reticle for the Ares. The Heras is definitely more for the money. If they both had a thicker reticle, it would be have been an easier decision and I would get the Heras, but I sprung for the Ares with the lit reticle in this instance.
