How people win at field target

I've been doing some statistical analysis of the last 10 matches in our area and I've spotted some trends. This is mostly for PCP, we don't have enough different piston shooters to spot meaningful trends.

For WFTF, everything under 40 yards should be automatic.
Positional shots should be 75% or better.
The winner is going to be whoever shot the long targets the best. And some shooters do better in the wind.
So my recommendation (assuming you have good dope for the close shots) is to practice offhand and long shots.

For Hunter, again everything under 40 yards should be a hit. Oddly, the top hunter shooters are more likely to whiff an occasional close or medium target than the WFTF shooters.
There is a clear line with some top shooters doing well at positionals and average at long shots while others do well at long shots and struggle with positionals.
For example, at a fairly easy monthly shoot last month, one shooter missed a 53 yard target and went 6 of 8 on standing and kneeling. He tied another shooter that cleaned the sitting shots and went 5 for 8 on positionals.
At a very tough match two months ago, the winner hit 87.5% of the long shots, missed one short shot and went 4 for 6 standing. 2nd place hit 83% of the long shots and missed 2 medium shots (one of those being a 52.5 troyer shot at 21 yards) and also went 4 of 6 standing. 3rd place was perfect out to 40 but missed 6 long shots and shot 50% standing. If he would have hit 1 more standing and 2 of the long shots he missed, he would have tied for 1st. The margins are very thin in Hunter class.
So for Hunter I think the recommendation is the same: know your short stuff, practice the long shots and positionals. You can win a match hitting the long shots, but you can lose a match missing the positionals.

We don't have a lot of Open class shooters (or more than 1 at a time), but I recall when we had a top Open class shooter come to our matches, he would usually clean the sitting shots (or come close) and miss one or two standing shots. I think with the ability to range combined with the 20 fpe limit, positionals would be the focus for Open class shooters.

Based on this analysis, my new practice routine is to put a 1 inch KZ target at 50+ yards and hammer it for a while, then move to 25 yards and shoot it standing and kneeling for a while. Then back to sitting, and so on. No more putting out 6 or 8 targets at various distances, they turn into confidence boosters instead of practice targets. And all that walking around cuts into practice time.

Hope this helps, and selfishly I hope it doesn't help too much. Now quit reading and go practice.

YONG HENG REBUILD PT.2!

After about 4 hours work, cleaning all parts to "sterile" condition, making sure all surfaces were devoid of scoring, gouges, etc., new piston ass'y, new gaskets, gasket sealant, reassembly, I thought I was ready to ROCK. NO SUCH LUCK! Fired up the YH, with my leak detector close at hand, looking so forward to watching the needle rise 4500psi & was only 4400psi short of that goal, ONLY!!! No leaks at any fittings or where cylinder gaskets were replaced. WTF? Very disappointing & frustrating to say the least. Took 3 weeks get the 1st gasket set. In Iimbo for now. How can it not build pressure without leaks? AARRGH!!!!!

Game recovery using infrared spotter?

Does anyone have any experience using infrared to recover game?
I found this : https://shop.opticsplanet.com/aimsh...ode=AS-H1-HEATSEEKER3510-HS3510B&gclsrc=aw.ds
I mostly want to use it to find deer after dark and find the squirrels I've shot faster (sometimes that last light shot has me looking and looking for my downed squirrel).
I'm not looking for a scope to hunt with(yet lol), I just want to be able to scan for a heat signature.

pirateship.com

Just sent a package (airgun) using pirateship.com.

The prices for UPS were about half what I would have paid using UPS directly. I have not used them for USPS...yet.

I did have some problems with the site the first time I tried, but they seem to have that fixed and the chat feature worked very well to resolve issues.

Anyway, I will use them again and hope I don't have the issues I had on my first tries.

Saving about 50% by using them was worth a little hassle IMHO. But I sure hope that doesn't happen again! (smile)

All my best!

Kerry

PCP for just target shooting or PCP to kill game?

Just curious with the members here who kills more critters than targets or buys more targets than critters?

My guess is that thousands of targets $$$$, are displaced more than critters! :) Still....just nothing but fun with super high pressure air. Haven't killed my new targets or any game this week!:)

3 1/2 hours on the range

No not shooting. The range needs maintenance, unfortunately. Don’t like weeds taking over. I spend enough time shooting on it, time to clean up. The falling leaves stick to the weeds like Velcro. Here’s what I started with.

This shot is after cleanup.

Defective Pellets?

I purchased a new batch of jsb Mark II's about 2 months ago. Since then I've had to send my maverick into the shop with a jammed loading mechanism blaming it on the gun. Now I find my huben has loaded up the barrel with broken pellets which jammed it up and I've sent it in to get fixed professionally because I don't know what all I tore up. Started with accuracy, loading problems. I'm trying to accept this responsibility as mine I don't think it's the gun in fact I know it's not the gun. I Wonder has anyone else seen some discrepancies or have some problems that have some questions in their mind now. I've never seen anything like this before but there's something going on and I'm not going to use any of these pellets. I have some older batches that I had no troubles with, I'm just confused and a little wary any input any experience. Am I nuts?

What Are Your Favorite AGN Member Handles?

I just read a thread where I saw @EmptyTin_Tim for the first time. I must say this is one of my favorite AGN handles. I like how it rolls off of the tongue. Reminds me of the rocker Dimebag Darryl. I don’t know why, it just does. Maybe it’s the alliteration. And his a profile photo suits his handle. There was another member’s handle that struck me similarly, but I can’t recall it at the moment. Hopefully it will come to mind a little later.

What are some of your favorite AGN handles?

HW 85 Cal. 6.35 How common is it?

Hi All,
I'll go straight to the point: I have a HW 85 springer (Weihrauch 85) Cal. 6.35 mm (.25). I tried to get another one for my nephew, but I was unable to find one anywhere. After failing to find one online, I went to several shops and... same thing. Cal. 177 and .22 readily available, but no .25. Some of them told me that they never seen one and it may be rare.

How rare is it that it is so hard to get one?
