  • Question
Compression chamber and TP

Just out of sheer curiosity, I've been toying with the idea. Now stay with me. I will make it as concise as possible.

Assuming there was no legal limits to the power a spring piston rifle could produce AKA the American market, what differences to the internals of the gun are altered to restrict for the UK market. I'm under no illusion that, ofcouse, the main spring will be weaker, but what about the piston stroke? Or the cylinder diameter/air volume or TP? If you disassembled hw95k, one bought in UK and the other bought in USA what differences would you find internally. One produces 17ft lb(usa) and the other sub 12(uk).

Do sub 12 guns even have the capacity from a piston stroke, TP, cylinder volume stand point, to ever achieve that of an identical American verson in principle? It's certainly not the case to just put a larger spring in or wack half an inch of spacers in as the gun just goes coil bound and you are unable to cock the rifle. So there must be other powers at play.

Other  Piece of walnut

Has been taken...

Dont know if anyone could use this to build a set of walnut grips for a pistol, its the buttstock off a walnut stocked T/C Black Diamond muzzleloader that I made into a pistol about 8 yrs ago.
Thickest part is 1 5/8 of course tapering like a butt stock does, but I would think you could make a nice set of conventional grips w/o thumb rest etc.
Will give this to 1st person who says they want it in this thread, not putting in classifieds since Im giving it away and I will get shipping in lower 48.

MODS IF THIS NEEDS TO BE MOVED FEEL FREE TO. THANKS.

If you had to pick 3 pellets/slugs...

I will be doing some testing with a TX200 MKI (with Vortex Pro Sport). I am admittedly an ACCURACY FREAK, and have lost the battle to this addiction. However, I would like to occasionally take small game at max range 40 yds or so. I would like to try three pellets (or slugs, but I know ZERO about slugs or if that is even applicable in my gun). What do you folks suggest as a top 3 to try. Again accuracy, uniformity, and so on are top priority.

I currently use R10 match pellets, and they are very, very good. I have been out of the game for 10-12 years, so I have obviously missed a bunch of stuff lol.

.177 cal

HW/Weihrauch  Early 80's HW35E .22 cal

Look what the Springer Fairy brought this January: a 1981 HW35E .22 cal, with a 22” barrel.

I seek out old quality springers for many reasons, the most important being that desirable guns are no longer in production, or no longer produced with quality. But the pickings here are slim. A HW35, for instance, turns up roughly once per year, and I’ve never seen one this early, or in this caliber, until now.

Having been pretty much done with .177 cal spring guns, I was glad to score a .22 cal HW35.

With its lacquered, finger-grooved walnut stock, capped grip, and factory-installed sling mounts, this looks like an E model to me, but I’m not up on the myriad HW varieties, so this could be an L, as well?

“Mellrichstadt-Bay” stamped on the right side of the breech block, under ‘Weihrauch’ dated this gun to a degree, even pre-purchase. The serial number puts it at a production date of 1981. It’s the late leather seal era for the HW35’s. If this gun was just a couple of years younger, it would have had a synth seal and an increased stroke.

This small-engine gun is a whopping 120cm / ~48” long, or as long as my Hatsan 135! This is of course down to the 22.2” (measured) barrel, apparently the longest production springer barrel there is, or shall ever be. It is quite a reach to cock the gun, and it is a veritable pole to handle in tight quarters.

The HW35 weighs 3777g / 8.32lbs., which makes it a mid-weight gun in my book. I’m completely at ease with it, mass-wise. The length may be another matter, heh.

There are some minor scuffs in the stock finish, as well as a couple of surprisingly bad scratches on the barrel. Other than that, the blueing is mostly in great condition, there’s little rust, and the stock under the finish is perfect. Unlike many oldies, this gun obviously hasn’t spent years in cold storage, which makes life much easier, as far as corrosion control goes.

The seller was extremely curt on the gun history. I get the feel that this Weihrauch has been shot some over the decades, but not all that much, maybe a couple large tins or so in total. It also seems nothing has been done to the gun after it left the factory, which is a far better situation than some of the alternatives.

The barrel lock is sturdy and works perfectly (although in need of lubrication). There is no characteristic wear on the receiver face from the barrel lock “sear” rubbing on it on barrel returns.

The barrel breaks and travels silently and smoothly, like on a thoroughly broken in quality gun. I have heard complaints about the noisy cocking of HW35’s, but there’s none of that here.

There’s pretty heavy droop in the barrel, the biggest of any of my guns. We’ll see how the sighting in goes.

The short cocking slot the articulated cocking lever enables is an obvious boon to rigidity and stability, as is the two-screw stock attachment setup, with no rickety side screws in the thinnest part of the stock as on most guns.

The LOP of the 35 is a perfect, full 36cm. I wouldn’t be able to deal with the more modern, tiny Weihrauchs in the same power bracket.

Raising the new old gun for a shot, the stubby, almost bulbous front stock and the super-long barrel make the 35 feel much like my BSF54, but in a breakbarrel configuration. Barrel heavy it is. Likewise, the shot cycle is almost identical: a soft, elastic jolt at the end, which gives a leather-sealed gun away, all by itself.

The gun diesels pretty heavily, no surprise there. Pulling patches it seems the bore has never been cleaned, in its 44 years of life. Black-brown filth, reeking of classic burnt factory grease, covers the patches all over.

The first couple shots through the chrono tell me the gun is a tired old lady: FTT’s leave the barrel at 120m/s / 394fps, Hobbies at 141m/s / 463fps, for measly 7 joules / 5 fpe. You’d think this is a German limit gun, but there’s no Freimark anywhere on the gun.

My 1980’s D34 doubled its tiny ME from a simple clean / relube, no parts changed, so I’m not too worried. 80’s and older lubes have mostly turned into semi-dried glue by this time, and I guess the mainspring is fatigued, as well. I can already tell the breech seal is really flat and crumbly-looking.

BSA LIGHTNING clx. Not sure if it’s gonna make it over here soon or at all. Hopefully it’s a better trigger and breech block set up. They are offering it in walnut.

Umarex  Whats your Favorite Affordable PCP Airgun

The Umarex Notos is my favorite affordable airgun. I got it for $229 on sale, Its regulated, compact and light weight. Very accurate out to 50 yards.
Great started PCP airgun.

Tuning  PCP regulator designs

I'm trying to wrap my head around Huma's regulator design & I don't mean to call out Huma specifically. I own their products & believe their machining quality/finish is 2nd to none. In reality my questions could be applied to all PCP regulated air rifles.

In reference to the regulators in pcp guns they all seem to use spring washers are providing the resistance to the flow of air from a high pressure to a low pressure. As that pressure difference increases the resistance to flow weakens & the flow increases. As the difference lowers the resistance to flow increases & the transfer lowers. this process never completes. the transfer tapers off to infinity & thus never completing the transfer. The amount of transfer can be so small that our tiny gauges would never be able to show the difference, nor could we hear the common hiss of that tiny amount of air passing thru the regulators. This process begins & continues once we place air into the gun & never completes until the gun is void of any pressure.

Is this how all pcp regulators are designed or is there any regulators that incorporate some sort hysteresis in order to achieve a complete seal? Do they all gradually taper off the transfer between high & low chambers to such a small amount that we just view it as a "complete seal"?

Jim here, retired here in Missouri from the Army (FT Lostinthewoods). I bought my first PCP at the end of November, it's an FX Maverick, I really love the quality and the way it performs! It has been fun to shoot and hunt with, the .25 cal puts a hurting on the squirrels, armadillo's and starlings. I am glad to have found this forum, there is a lot of great information and friendly people on here willing to help new members out! I am a member of another non air gun forum and it can get pretty brutal in there and I have not seen anything like that here.

Sheridan  Help with my childhood Sheridan

Hello all,

I have the Sheridan pump that my dad gave me as a kid and I'd like to get it working. The main problem is that the bolt is missing. I remember it was the straight bolt, not curved.
I'm sure it also needs sealing.
Can someone point me to a place to find the right bolt and seal kit?

Near as I can tell from info on this site and youtube videos it's probably a late 50's/early 60's model? I took the stock off and the only info on it is "Sheridan Products Inc., Racine Wis--Made in U.S.A."
Would this make it a Blue Streak?

Thanks for any advise you can give,
Michael

AGT Barrels

The Vixen was a tack driver without much pellet searching for me anyway, but after owing the V3 .30 I realized how little information AGT publishes about their barrels compared to other manufacturers.
Being a .3063 and finding vids and slugging myself I found it difficult to find slugs that worked until Stephen Bianchi ( AVS) started his quest for a slug for the .3063 of the V3 .30 and everyone with one of the V3's had a good option.
But why is AGT silent on the barrels they put in their excellent airguns?
In fact their is so little published by them on the net about the airguns specs they make, that it's downright weird.
Being such good airguns you would think they would have at least a detailed list of specs comparable to some of the much less accurate or expensive offerings out there.
But after several years of occasional searches, I still only see bare bones descriptions of their offerings anywhere I've looked.

Does anyone have an answer as to why they publish so little?

If anyone has a spec sheet published by AGT themselves, could you share the link?

Big Bore/Arrow  WTS M3 .35 impact with power block.
