Results  DIFTA Match Report Saturday July 5 2025

Five shooters celebrated our Independence Day weekend match at DIFTA. Temperatures started in the mid 70s and climbed to the mid 80s by the match end with high but not overly oppressive humidity. The day was calm with essentially no wind; intermittent sunshine; and a full tree canopy that made some of the darker targets and kill zones hard to see. We had no target malfunctions and the course was fun to shoot if challenging.

The average course difficulty was 29.35, with three 3/8” and one ½” kill zones, and seven targets at > 40 yards. Of note the ½” target was on the kneeling lane at 12 yards and fell only 3 times. Overall, the theme for the day was ‘missed opportunities’ with 14 scores of 5/ keeping clear lanes frustratingly out of reach.

Greg White in Hunter Division took the match high score of 48/60 closely followed by Tinh Nguyen in open division who scored 47/60. Unusually, 4/5 shooters competed in Open Division.

Thanks to Paolo and Scott Broom for setting up the match, and as always, many thanks to those who travel long distances to compete and keep our sport alive, and to everyone who stayed behind to bring up the targets.

Mark Mayer acted as match Director. The next match at DIFTA will be held on Saturday August 2nd.

N/A  Digital/Electronic PCPs - Brands besides Daystate and Skout?

Yep the heliboard is what daystate should have come up with in the first place. Upgrade worth every cent.
The HeliBoard is a very good upgrade unless…. you want to shoot Speed at RMAC or Open Speed at EBR. If you go fast you can outrun the board…. The factory board can’t be outrun, at least not by me or anyone I know.

Air Gun Compressor Oil....does this one seem like it would be a good option?

i really appreciate all the advice. I guess i raised the question because in my search i found some disagreements and conflicting information which seemed to suggest that there were newer and improved options. this is such an expensive sport (at least for myself at this stage of life) so i wanted to do due diligence.

Results  Palmyra (PSA) LRFT 7/5/2025

We had 5 shooters sign up to shoot this month’s LRFT match. Weather was a comfortable 78 with a SSW at 3-5 at start time. Targets for this match were placed from 18y to 105y, 3 targets per lane, 2 shots per target for a 42 shot match. Overall course difficulty was 30.2. Lane 7 was a supported standing lane, some shot with sticks and some used the vertical roof support beam for steadiness. The closest target on the standing lane was a small KD Squirrel placed at 18y, a KD Mountain Lion at 71, and a KD Mule Deer at 86y. The KD Squirrel was the easiest target of the match with a difficulty of 9.0, happy to report no one missed the Squirrel!! We had only one cold line at the start of the match due to a broken reset string on the 105y target. After a quick re-tie the match resumed and went smoothly from there. We added a new Skull target this month with both 1” eye sockets as KZ’s, shooters choice on which one to shoot. This target worked flawlessly and glad to have it in inventory! Thanks to Mike B. and David G. for helping in setup for this match, and to Troy B. for the lawn manicure!
Scores:

April B. FX Impact. 22
Mike B. FX Crown. 30
David G. RAW. 35
Trevor D. FX Impact. 35

Thanks to everyone for staying to help break down and put away all the equipment!! Next match scheduled for 8/2/2025. Hope to see ya there!!

Airforce  Testing 450gr in the tex-rex 50cal

I,ve been hunting with my Texan .510 going on 5 years..My Big .510 does not shoot well off of tripod...A tripod has screw up some really good hunts.. The only sucess ive had at all with a tripod is using a dual tripod setup..With second tripod with yoke off rear of stock...Its the double recoil thing you have to hold on follow through ... My .510 Lother Walther barrel was terrible and lead heavily and would only shoot if i would clean every three shots...I hand lead lapped the barrel starting at 120 grit lapping coumpound then 240 grit, then 340 grit...My Barrel is now consistent and can go without cleaning..I use powder coated slugs and slick 50 lube...I would think Airforce would atl east pick a good barrel to send out for the You Tube reviewers.. If the .510 Tex does not end up shooting well..I will hand lead lap your barrel for you.. I used to work at ER Shaw barrels,, used to rough production grade barrels... I also use external regulator...For the new T rex at 4500 psi the CS4 GX compressor is working for me..I can fill my SCBA SCOTT tank 5.5 to 5500 psi and just regulate down to 4500 or for me 3625 psi for consistant easy shooting.. The GX CS4 has no problem filling my scba to 5500 psi...
Thank you I really appreciate it.. I'm thinking on the 457 had one some years ago but sold it because of the lack of power that was before they bump the power on their CF version now it has even more, it will be fun to shoot such a hard recoil pcp .

HW/Weihrauch  Oh no, Mr. Bill!

Love mine.! The silver .177 was a German 7.5 joule model. I saved the nearly new oem parts but polished it all up and installed the Maccari ARH Ultra Pro Mk2 tune kit. It's just perfect. The blued .22 has stock internals. I'm just shooting it in and enjoying the process. You can't go wrong with these classic rifles. I wish there were more examples of this legacy and quality still available.

I ask why?

I have been in the hobby a little over 9 years now, seen huge changes in just that short time frame...

There is one thing that I just don't get, well more, but that is for another day.

Why does the American market crave the over-the-top power?

Ok for competition shooters I kinda get it, 100 yard benchrest in 10-15 mph winds, I'll give you that one.. but for the average shooter I see No reason for the 80 plus ft/lb guns.
Hunters ok I get that too, but I will put it out there, I don't think the majority of Hunters are taking wild pigs or coyotes with an air rifle.. For the most part I see them as pesting for tree rats, invasive birds, etc..

I will also put it out there that Most target shooting, paper, steels, etc, are all probably under 40 yards in a backyard shooting scenario, hell even Most FT events are lower powered restricted

So you ask what the hell is my point?.. Have you looked at the trend of most newer guns?.. They tout stupid high power. the poor guns are so maxed out they wear out and fail prematurely..

This "power junkie" mentality has hurt a large portion of the low powered offerings, especially in small caliber..

Why in god's name would produce a .177 caliber airgun that is shooting over 1000 fps, the damn thing won't hit the broad side of a barn with any consistency because the damn pellet is tumbling, makes no damn sense...

Anyway, these are just the rambling thoughts of an old man and I would love to hear your thoughts,
I'm late to this party, but, IMHO, it's not just a mad dash to super high power. Slug shooting has come on the scene and has it's proponents. Initially, for big distance, but now, ever more increasingly pin point accuracy. airgunners want to try for 1 MOA at 150 yards, 200 yards. pellets can not achieve this. BUT, the slug game has the issues of detirmining barrel diameter, twist rate, and velocity required to push what is considered optimal grain weight of said slugs as per calibre. Now the power of the gun has to be able to achieve that. which means pushing a significantly heavier projectile quite a bit faster.
Now, that does not mean I have shunned the lower power guns - they definately have their place! I wouldn't want a MORA 25 cal shooting 45-50g slugs at 950fps for squirrels or birds. But that also means I'd want more than a 177 brocock atomic for coyotes or hogs! LOL! I go up and down the power list according to need. I think all this talk with the power is because it is the latest frontier.

Alternative for BOG (Caldwell) fieldpod V's?

I had a can of Plasti dip in my inventory, and the end result is pretty acceptable!

Before dipping I filled the missing pieces (mostly at the corner edges) with some Playdoh like clay and let that dry for a day.

Before, hard brittle plastic.............................and after Plasti dip treatment, nice rubberised surface

As for testing for fit to the mag, yes we can do like you suggest and carefully test them in the mag slot and then back them out after if they don't fit. Unfortunately not all mag slots are the same (nor are the pellets or the slugs) so there is that factor too. With the mag out the gun, it is easy to load all the slots quickly, and then pick up and tap the mag on a hard flat surface to see if any tips protrude from any of the slots - if so, I don't use that ammo in the gun. And since it is so easy to do, we can run the test a few times and quickly assess how good 100 or more projectiles work in the mag with great confidence.
Ah...makes perfect sence. Learned something. Thank you.
