After the Field Target and starting precisely on time at 1 p.m. we held an introductory session of what we call “10 Meter Silhouette”. This event is designed to be shot mostly with 10 meter airguns using open or red dot sights, but other guns up to and including 20 FPE Field Target guns may be used. The targets are 1/10 scale metal creatures at 10 to 35 yards. Quite a few targets and ranges were put out and a large variety of rifles were made available for free use. Around 10 people attended and they all had tremendous fun.

At our next match day (2nd Saturday of each month) we will hold a more formal 40 shot match but will set up a sight-in/practice/play area as well. Cost will be only $10 per shooter with the demo area free.

Next Field Target Match, Saturday 13 September 2025. Show time 8 a.m., start time 9 a.m.

10 Meter Silhouette shooting after Field Target, match start 1 p.m.

Results  August TEXtreme Competitions Match Report

Was I not exhausted from fighting everything Technology related in Ronny World going haywire for the last three weeks, I might apologize for this match report coming later than usual. However I won’t apologize for Technology gone haywire. From what I can tell, HAYWIRE is what Technology does! 🤬

The August TEXtreme competition(s) being 20 and 12 foot pound field target allowing any airgun in either class falling within the respective power restriction, competitors were also allowed to purchase two scorecards if they liked. They liked. In fact if two shooters’ 12 foot pound pistols hadn’t sprang leaks at the last minute, every shooter would have shot two scorecards.

My priority in setting the courses being 20 and 12 foot pound pistols with very high Troyer difficulties in both cases, interestingly only two shooters contested 20 FP Pistol on the 40.6T average course. Also interesting (since it’s usually not the case), four shooters shot 20 Foot Pound Rifle class on the same course (that translated to a low, 25.8 Rifle Troyer).

Four competitors also took advantage of the opportunity to exercise their 12 Foot Pound Pistols on the high, 39.1 Pistol Troyer course.

If you think describing the opportunities available to shooters by allowing them to shoot one or two scorecards with rifles, pistols, or both on (essentially) two courses, imagine the challenge of squadding those opportunities.😵‍💫 The things I do for my shooters!

Strangely, the first priority of Extreme Pistol Field Target had the least number of shooters (two). Derrick Wall captured top bragging rights in 20 Foot Pound Pistol with an excellent 39/40 score. Matter of fact he was clean the whole match going into not only his last target on his last lane, but his very LAST SHOT.🥵 Unfortunately his last target boasted 'far and away' the highest Troyer difficulty of the day. “How high”, you’re wondering. The 1” kill-zone dove at 38 yards on Lane 4 is a high difficulty for rifles at 38T; WAY OFF THE CHARTS for pistol at a whopping 59.9 Troyer!

You’d think a squad-mate with over a decade of Field Target experience might have absorbed some amount of Field Target etiquette along the way. You’d be wrong. Upon Derrick’s last shot on his last target of his last lane not dropping the OFF THE CHARTS DIFFICULTY 1” dove at 38 yards, his squad-mate burst out laughing! 😂

I’ve long suspected Derrick Wall super-human or space alien, but now realize my mistake. Any regular human wouldn’t have taken such a gauche reaction from a squad-mate at such an emotionally taxing moment without an extreme reaction to it.😤 But not Derrick. 😐

Those unfamiliar with coming THAT close to achieving one of the rarest achievements in Field Target can’t imagine the let-down of missing that goal on the last shot. Suffice to say it’s exponentially more depressing than otherwise.😭 That Derrick came that close to a perfect score on such a high-difficulty course is evidence enough he is super-human. That his squad-mate survived such a breach of etiquette is proof-positive Derrick Wall is a saint🧚‍♂️😶‍🌫️ (sorry D, these are the closest emojis I could find 🥴), who only contests Field Target competitions to demonstrate how humans should act.

DW’s super-human 39/40 score was posted with his .20 Brocock Commander topped with 4-18X Discovery scope, and shooting 13.73 grain JSB pellets 805 FPS. Phenomenal shooting, Derrick!

I’d thought my 34/40 Extreme Pistol score a pretty good one, but had to settle for the highlight of my match day being cleaning both shots on the 59.9T dove. Correction- the highlight of my day was standing in the shadow of a saint.

However I did manage to prevail for the 12 Foot Pound Pistol class win with a 31/40. My Crosman 187 pistol conversion shoots 8.4 grain JSBs at 760 FPS, and wears a 4-12X Bushnell Legend scope.

Of four shooters in 12 FP Pistol, Jim Clarke came second with a 30/40 score. JC (see what I did there, after all that ‘saint’ stuff?) shot a Brocock Atomic XR pistol topped with a 10-50X Hawke scope, pushing 13.43 pellets 630 FPS. Good shooting, Jim.

Billy Davison won the 20 Foot Pound Rifle class, turning in a perfect 40/40 scorecard. His .20 caliber RAW rifle shoots 13.73 grain JSBs 803 FPS, and wears an S3 scope. Nice shooting, BD!

Jim Clarke’s 38/40 in 20 FP Rifle was good for his second Second of the day. His SIghtron SIII scoped Redwolf shoots 13.43 JSBs at 815 FPS. Good shooting, Jim.

Weather permitting, our September 6 & 7 TEXtreme competitions will be Rifle and Pistol Extreme Field Target matches (respectively), with a prize list of $1,000 in AoA gift certificates. Hope to see Y’all then.

Happy Shooting,
Ron & Maggyy

Airforce  Where do all the o rings go ?

Since they won't say what size they are can anyone tell me where they all go ?
Digital calipers are your friend. Measure the groove inside diameter, the outside diameter and the width for the cross section and measure the orings..... If they're not obvious ones. It gets tedious but you can make a cheat sheet on the first rebuild and trace orings onto the notes.

Airgun vs chalk @50 yards

You're giving me an idea. What about using a steel tube just large enough for the chalk to slide in. Then weld it up so that the steel tube sits upright and allows about a half inch of the chalk to be exposed. You shoot the exposed chalk and get a nice puff of dust. Then the chalk slides down the tube and the next half inch is exposed for the next shot. I'm going to have to play with this concept. Thanks for the idea.

A chalk deer feeder for airguns lol I like it.

Other  Wasn’t looking for another but…….

I completely understand wanting to preserve this rifle. Unfortunately, I have what they call tinkeritis. I just can’t leave well enough alone. Before deciding to chop the barrel, I had a real good look online and these rifles are not what I would call sought after.
They are somewhat rare in this supertarget stock with the long barrel but not unobtainable. This particular rifle was not perfect , there were some good bruises on the stock, a few scratches on the tube and the front sight block.
Oh well enough of my sorry excuses. What’s done is done. Now I have a rifle that is much easier to point and shoot and once the sights are on should make a good head to head rifle for my HW30 wearing peep sights .

possibly the best slugs

You're sending mixed messages! The tin shows a guy using an AR trying to perform a Texas heart shot. You only take that shot as a last resort!
Mixed messages? Nah—just marketing with a sense of humor. I don’t take Texas heart shots unless it’s the only option and the angle’s right. The slug does its job either way, but I’m always aiming for clean, ethical drops. Below is a sample.

Coyote hunt, skunked again

Yeah we have some of that too but not as much trees as you have in this pic. Up high we have a lot but spread out and down here the thickets are nasty AF to walk through but even my short (5’9”) self can see over it most of the time…. That landscape you’re showing me is interesting. I think the wind direction is gonna be especially important because your scent can sorta get trapped in the trees like that. Or so I hear? I’ve pretty much only had success sitting up on a hill/cliff overlooking open terrain and or around a bend in a wash. Learned that one from an old timer. I’m still not great at it but if you set up behind a bend in a wash or creek bed you can catch them coming around the corner.

Also how loud are you playing the calls? Sometimes less is more.

I’m no expert so I’m just trying to throw as many things as I can think of at you… I’ve had some luck calling them though so maybe at least I’ve got a little luck. I’m rooting for you though. I hate coyotes and I really wanna shoot some with an air rifle. I’m dying to see some scope cam of you dropping 140fpe worth of lead into them.

Oh yeah, another thing I’ve started to investigate is moon phase and barometric pressure. Trolling the coyote hunting message boards I’ve definitely seen some talk about it. Some recommend an app like Solunar, some say it’s nonsense and others just day “when there’s a lot of deer out I tend to catch more fish/see more coyote/see more critters… I’m testing an app like solunar to see if I get any results out of it.
I do keep the wind in my favor, try to anyway, and start with the volume pretty low at first and turn up the volume every 2 or 3 min for 12min or so.

FX  Barrel versus slug weight

I’ve heard it said that one can shoot under 30 grain slugs with a standard liner, but for over 30 grains the faster twist slug liner is required. No doubt this is a very loose rule, there is some overlap, and your mileage may vary. I shot slugs 25 to 30 grains for a long while with the standard liner and had some decent results, probably averaging 1 3/8” CTC at 100 yards.

So give it a try. If you do end up moving to the slug liner expect all the tunes and velocities you used before will need to be revised.

Stressing on Rifle Cases, here's a soft case that actually fits

I've got a couple of Flambeau hard cases that I bought on sale for $30 each, a pretty decent price for a reasonable case, but nothing special. I would guess that a manufacturer could find a similar case for $20 or less. That seems like a very reasonable amount to spend on protecting an expensive and somewhat fragile product, especially when you consider that even cardboard boxes cost something.

I've had three guns sent to me now in decent cases. My sidewinder came in a tactical soft case, my GK1 came in a hard case with molded foam and my limited edition Umarex SAA came in a hard sided double pistol case, which IMO was the best of the bunch.

Recent purchases from AOA have had excellent disposable packaging, being double boxed and packed in eggshell foam that was cut to fit. My only complaint about it is that the foam padding seems too good to throw in the trash, but is just slightly too thin to use in a hard case.
