.177 JSB 10.03 ko's

I have used them on ground squirrels as low as 900fps and they work amazing. They are super accurate out of my Gamo Coyote, which is now slinging them right at 1000fps. I will be testing them soon in my Wildcat and Maverick, hoping for some decent accuracy. I have been buying them when on sale, they are excellent pesting ammo.

N/A  scope problem turrent wont turn anymore!

I love the way God made us all different, but the same.

Indeed.

The speed/weight/trajectory thing is hardwired in our nervous system. It's what are brain was designed to do. From the first time our ancestors picked up a rock and threw it. The ones that could hit the mark survived.

We are just responding to human instinct. We are driven to sling sh!t out there at something. It's our duty as a homo sapien. Whether it's a ball, a bullet, an arrow or an old black rock.

We are all just a bunch of neanderthals with space age pellet rifles brought together by a slipping scope mount that shoots a foot to low. All to squeeze a drop of serotonin from the most primitive part of our brains.

Indeed He does work in mysterious ways.

Do you Field Target in the snow?

Sucks to hear that. Do what you can when you can.
I shoot in the winter as long as the snow isn't too deep. I have been lucky this year, the snow was late to the party, and I was able to keep the ground targets in place a little longer. However, the snow is now deep on the forest floor, and I had remove the snow around them, or move to a higher location. Needless to say, I'm running on borrowed time on the f/t range. This will be the last week of F/T 2024/2025 When the snow is too much in the mts, I switch over to the desert for the rest of the winter. The older I get the colder I get. LOL.
I have been using hot hands hand warmers for years @ work and decided to give them a go while I shoot in the cold. I put them in a pair of fingerless gloves, on the top of my hands and that seemed to do the trick. There are usb rechargeable types that a friend uses while snowmobiling, he says thay are a game changer for keeping hands warm.

N/A  Smallest/shortest nitro piston

the nitro piston is just a spring in the form of a shock absorber as you know and that still take the piston to give you the compressed air
i understand what you are trying to do but i think as you already know there will be no off the shelf part to make it happen
there have been a handful of NP pistols
Hatsan has made them and Benjamin makes one
now could it be done with it cut down maybe but it would be low power and the effort to do the R&D could be a losing battle
Pretty much. I was looking at the pneumatic struts/return systems (Softer than Spring(tm)) and thought... double the width of the piston, half the length, higher deltaP over D...

But yeah, the website I used to get parts from went defunct/bought out and now can't buy as aconsumer the small pistons, so I guess it's find someone else that sells them if I want to experiment.

Any issues with your GX CS4?

Keep a note pad with the compressor & log your run time. I'll bet not many of us have a run timer but you SHOULD keep track.
Every shooter should keep a notebook. Keep notes on your rifles/pistols and leave a page for the compressor. I just start a timer and record the run time. We all have a watch or a cellphone to time it.

Air Venturi  Odd size o-ring question

Hi all,
Sorry in advance if this is too long a read, but I'm hoping for some advice...

I've been trying to fix a slow air leak in my Avenge-x .22 and not having much luck so far. I've replaced o-rings on the axle (they were brittle and flattened out) and replaced the dowty seal behind the fill pressure gage (and gently tightened that down). Although not as bad, there is still air escaping somewhere that I can't seem to locate with soapy water or silcone. Even though they look okay, I'll probably try replacing fill probe and air cylinder o-rings next before venturing deep into the receiver to replace 0-rings. For those interested, there are a couple of videos on YouTube by Shooter's den in Pakistan that give a very detailed and closeup view of how to completely tear down the Avenge-X. They're very helpful, especially if you use english translation closed captions!

Anyway, as I've been doing this, it occurred to me that I should probably build up a supply of spare o-rings for future repairs. I could buy a complete reseal kit for around $30-$40, or I could put together an order from a place like O-rings and More and get a lifetime supply at a fraction of the cost. I've ordered from them in the past. It's hard to beat a pack of 25 o-rings for pennies plus nominal shipping. I can also wait for Captain O-ring to start selling an Avenge-X reseal kit - an attractive option because Jon puts together a color coded sheet to go along with the color coded o-rings, making it so much easier to identify o-rings. But Jon tells me that kit is weeks away and I'm sure it'll also be in the $30+ range.

My question has to do with odd or non-standard 0-ring sizes and what to use if I can't get them. For example, nearly all the 0-rings needed for the Avenge-X are standard metric sizes (20 i.d. x 2 c.s., 4 x 1.5, 2.5 x 1.5, etc.) However, there are a few that aren't so standard. I'm referring to both the shematic drawing of the rifle from Pyramyd Air along with a parts list (partially in Chinese) that I found from Nova Vista. On that list, there are 0-rings such as 12.4 x 2.6, 2.4 x 1.8, 20.2 x 3.5, and one that's simply denoted as 10 (#69 on the schematic - any ideas what that is?). I can't find any 0-rings with these dimensions and I'm wondering if I can use the nearest standard size instead. So, for example, instead of 12.4 mm, use 12.5 mm; instead of 20.2 mm, use 20 mm; instead of 1.8 mm, use 2mm. What do you think?

Also, a few of the 0-rings listed do not specify the hardness (Buna 70 or 90). In cases like that, which do you go with?

Thank you for any help you can offer with this!
Mike
Go to AliExpress and buy the various o'ring collections. 1.9, 1.5, 2.0, 3.1. You will end up with what you need 95% (or more) of the time. O'ring sets specific to a gun are way over priced and useful usually only for that gun. I also bought both rubber and silicon o'rings because you just can't have too many o'rings when dealing with air guns.

Airgun Technologies  Uragan 2 177 vs vulcan 3 177

Best bet is to contact Derrick Wall zx10wall a member here. Derrick handles and services both those brands and is very informative about the pros and cons of each brand. Good Luck

Joe
Thanks for the tip as well!. I have a Vulcan 3 on 22 cal and may look up Derrick's services.

Winters' Winds - the ultimate master of the cold pellets fate

This winter started off mild but the blizzard dropped some ice and then snow and the wind during the storm was awful. Despite that I connected with a high percentage on the HOSPs and assorted trash/pest birds. I have always liked the 34 grain JSBs but the .25 Hades is not bad in the wind either. As pellets go ;). Shooting through a cross wind is the challenge when it is gusting, hard to decide on a hold. Out to about 25 yards in 20 gusting 30 I hold on the bird. Beyond that I start to lean into the wind.

HOSPs are imported invasive English House Sparrows. They are as destructive as are starlings. Sparrows decimate bluebirds and starlings decimate purple martins. Both I understand were brought in by some deviant so as to make sure all of the birds mentioned in Shakespeare plays were represented in America. Thanks, I do not even like Shakespeare and I definitely do not like his birds but my JSBs do! There are many native sparrows and many native birds that look like a sparrow but the only ones I shoot are the English imported house sparrow, they are not protected. I am pretty good at identifying them by sight, sometimes the females are easy to confuse with a native finch and in such case I just pass on the shot. But the bull HOSPs are easy to identify and a challenging target compounded by the cold and wintery winds.
Thanks for the info. When I get settled in I’m going to do some research so I don’t start picking off finches.

collector, enthusiast, hoarder or just obsessed?

Yes to all three, but I'm losing it. There are fewer and fewer places to shoot. If you own a lot of land (I've owned parcels as big as 477 acres), you're stuck with all the maintenance, which does not appeal to me at 69 y/o. On smaller parcels, there are more and more municipal rules, HOA rules, and subdivision rules.
it is getting more and more difficult to sell, ship or receIve payment for anything gun related PB's and now even airguns.
I owned mid to high priced airguns since 1997. Hearing all the talk about budget guns and wanting something to tweak around with in winter, I bought an Umarex Notos, Gamo Urban and AirVenturi Avenger, all in .22.
I was really impressed an wonder if I wasted all my money on those higher priced guns, especially since even if like new they can hardly be sold unless you are willing to lose 50%+

do what a lot of people do here. post them in the classifieds for 90% of their retail and wait for months until you get a bite 😂

Benjamin  Tuning - Benjamin Marauder 0.25 Cal 40 shots/40 FPE tune

Hi,

I am attempting to fine tune my Benjamin Marauder 25 caliber with the famous 40 shots/40 FPE tune. I have modified the air rifle with the Tim Hill modifications by widening the transfer port, changing the valve, hammer, hammer springs, and lighter hammer striker. I've also added a huma regulator with integrated pressure gauge and set it around 130-140 bar. It's currently shooting the 25.39 grain JSB Exact pellets at an average of 846 feet per second with a standard deviation of about 6 feet per second.

Below it's one of the 40 shots string, and I am having some difficulties in "flat lining" the shots vs. having the peak in velocities seen in shots within the middle of the shot string.

Question: Is the below pattern indicative of a regulator pressure or hammer spring tension increase or decrease? Or, do both need adjustments? I believe I am close and any direction and/or guidance is much appreciated!

Huben  GK1 Pellet size

I have written in other threads about this subject. On my .25 GK1s, I have both a Gen 1 and a Gen 3, both have a magazine bore of exactly .250" measured with precision pins. The pellet retention mechanism is a light chamfer at the mouth of each mag bore. This chamfer is designed to hold the oversize pellet skirt, which is .010" larger than the pellet head at .260". This prevents the pellet from shifting forward in the magazine causing jams. All the JSB pellets work flawlessly in this manor. I recently shot two tins of H&N pellets and the skirt diameter was small and allowed the pellets to shift forward and jam. So beware. always check your chosen pellet's skirt size before buying too many. I have not tested other brands, so that is on you. I shoot the 25.4 gr pellets because they are very accurate and less expensive than the heavier 33.9 gr size.

Bad shot placement on a rat using Zulus

You nailed it right where your crosshairs were. So the gun is good. And that’s good. It’s funny how animals are spring loaded when shot. But a human would just collapse and cry if shot in the a$$.

It’s because we’re atop the food chain and not used to being hunted. I guarantee though there are many soldiers and people who live in war zones that are spring loaded too when shot at / in the hindquarters!

@BlackICE, Atomic XR .22, basic Zulus atop, rat at 40 yards, CPHPs 14.3 grain pellets. Was going for the head but hit high. Same “spring loaded” reaction as yours…🙏 For me the Zulus has been a game changer…

I think I need to stop browsing here for a bit. I keep finding new equipment that I NEED. I checked the price on those Zulus, it’s amazing what quality you get for around $500. I remember basic civilian night vision binoculars being a couple grand a few years ago. I definitely need a night vision scope though! I need it. I’ll use it. I’ll be the nemesis of night squirrels and rats.

How well does a night vision scope like this function compared to a regular one? Is there a level of disorientation or queasiness? I used NVGS at night in the military in training, I always found them disorienting but that was a few years back.

Boosters

It's not about the energy required to pump the pressure to 5k that's the issue. Its when you have bottles that are lower than the presure you require to shoot you have to go home. So if you need 5 k to shoot and even if you had 4 bottles at 5k to fill your gun you won't be able to fill your gun to 5k. With the booster you can still fill your gun to 5k when you only have 3000 psi in the the bottle.

Allen
Thanks,

I was looking at it from the 5 bottles vs. 1 bottle & booster comparison....as in which would make the most practicle sense.

Carrying around 5 bottles does seem a little over the top....but it would't stop me from trying.

Umarex  Umarex AirSabre

wow there is a lot to learn about compressors thank you I will look into the GX-CS4 I'm in Ontario so finding a AirSabre is the trick
Search "Yong Heng," "GX-CS Series," in archives for more information. 3.5 years with $272 Yong Heng, did replace leaky gauge and water pump. Pump my fault for pulling on wires removing from water bucket, new one $11. Again, not portable but easily fills SCBA tank for away missions. WM

FX  How powerful fx impact m4 22 compact?

Why are you using so much reg? If your valve adjuster is set that low and your hammer is is that high, you could definitely find the same tune at a much lower regulator setting. Is the shot cycle violent at all?
It is pretty well maxed out for a 500mm barrel on a MKII efficiency wise. There isn't a way to get that level of power using a lower reg setting and not have it be ridiculously loud. I can't increase hammer spring more once the velocity stops changing. Once I get the velocity about where I want it, I adjust the valve back until I see a drop in velocity. I'm trying to use just enough air that the valve closes just before the slug leaves the barrel.

There are probably other ways of doing it but I prefer a short snappy stroke instead of a long one because I get much better accuracy out of the gun when theres less pressure behind the slug as it leaves the barrel.

It will go up to 1050fps but it gets really loud, so I backed it off a bit and then adjusted the valve until it quiets down some.

Shot cycle isnt violent at all... it is very crisp. The slug power kit has a very, very weak valve adjuster spring so bringing it all the way back in doesnt change much. Just enough to snap it shut slightly faster.

All that said, yesterday I backed the reg down to 160 bar, and re-adjusted for 950. N animal is ever going to know the difference between 46 ft-lbs and 51.

I am actually considering selling the 500mm .22 barrel to get a 600mm fo I can do that using a little less air and a little quieter still.

Compressor - New GX CS4 Performance Issues!

I had a very slow fill issue with my GX CS4 taking more than 3 times as long to fill. When it got to around 2,000 PSI it was sucking canal water and struggling to the intended fill. I was about to give up troubleshooting it and after contacting GX customer service they replied back with a few instructions to correct my issue. And, it worked like a charm I am now filling faster than my original deadhead tests when I received the compressor. This is what GX responded to me with and I encourage you to also try these steps.

GX representative response to me via email:

"1) Hello please check if there is leaking carefully first. Include whole hose, bleed valve, burst disc and so on. It mainly was caused by leaking. It is easy to fix. keep the bleed valve tighten, watch pressure gauge and if it drops quickly? then it means it's leaking.

2) If there aren't any air leaks, another possibility, see if compressor runs hard when reaching to 200 Bar or 3,000 PSI? if yes, follow this video to run it for about 1 hour.

you can connect test plug, keep bleed valve tighten, excess grease or dirty will come out from check valve (under burst disc )

3) If still can not solve, water washing , follow this This should surely can solve the problem."

Step 3 above is what corrected my performance issues. Good luck.
My deadhead tests from new were a bit slow (35 sec). I removed the check valve and ran the compressor for 45 min, occasionally swabbing out the accumulation of gunk. When I put it back together, deadhead tests dropped to 28 sec. I cant wait to time my next bottle fill.

FX  Wildcat

Looking to purchase a new squirrel / varmint gun , would a wild cat .25 or .30 be a good choice? Thanks
I purchased the Maverick in .25 and love it for squirrel hunting. I have yet to have one get away when hit, they all have dropped dead on the spot. I think the .25 would fulfill your need.

HW/Weihrauch  Look what UPS just dropped off. A 77 Mk1.

Today I cleaned up, mounted the scope to the correct clock position and set the eye relief. Interestingly the scope has numbered turrets, a resetable zero and zero stop system. All admirable features by today's standards much less something forty years old.

I'm anxiously waiting for the outside temps to reach the 30s so I zero and chronograph this beast. By beast I mean physical size and weight. This thing is a tank.
